Update: FAMU Band Director Julian White Says University Didn’t Help Him Get Hazing Situation Under Control

Oh, when legacies get tarnished… After almost fourty years at Florida A&M and 13 years as the school’s band director, Julian White was fired last week in the wake of the “Marching 100″ hazing scandal that left one student dead. And now he’s fighting back. FAMU president Dr. James Ammons announced Wednesday that the university would fire White in the wake of Champion’s death. A letter sent to White from Ammon’s office cited “alleged misconduct and/or incompetence involving confirmed reports and allegations of hazing.” “We weren’t able to stop it, and so that’s why we thought that the sanction was appropriate at this time,” Ammons told CNN. “While Dr. White has had a distinguished career in music education and administration within the university as director of bands, I did not feel there was competence involving reporting allegations of hazing within the Department of Music and the Marching 100,” Ammons told the Tallahassee Democrat. White has since hired an attorney, who is demanding the now-former director be reinstated. 11Alive obtained a letter sent by attorney Chuck Hobbs to Dr. Ammons, outlining White’s actions against hazing, but saying the school did not provide enough “support” for those efforts. “There has been little uniformity in discipline in the form of University-wide suspensions or expulsions,” the letter stated. White said Ammons gave him the choice to resign or be fired. Ammons, an FAMU graduate, became band director in 1998 and has been on the school’s music faculty for nearly 40 years. According to the Capitol News Service in Tallhassee, White is a union member, and the university will have to wait until Dec. 22 to actually separate him from the university, in order to give him enough time to respond. Ammons’ letter placed White on administrative leave with pay until the official Dec. 22 firing date. On Tuesday, Ammons announced that the school would form an independent task force to investigate Champion’s death, along with any “unauthorized activities” associated with the Marching 100. The school president said FAMU’s “band, staff, students and history” will all be subject to investigation. On Wednesday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott sent a letter to the commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Gerald Bailey, asking the FDLE to investigate Champion’s death and the circumstances surrounding it. Ammons told the Democrat that he was looking forward to the FDLE’s involvement in the case. “We want answers,” he told the Democrat. “I welcome FDLE to this investigation to get to the bottom of this.” Since Champion’s death Saturday, blogs and social media sites have been flooded with posts speculating that Champion’s death may be connected with hazing. Ammons has asked people to stop engaging in rumors, but also acknowleded that several band members have been released from the band this semester because of possible participation in hazing. “Hazing is illegal, and it’s something that should not happen,” he said. “I am committed to making certain that we end this practice.” In Florida, hazing is a third degree felony. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings has said he suspects hazing is involved in Champion’s death and that charges could be forthcoming. A FAMU student and former band member who asked not to be identified, told the Democrat that groups within the band haze as an initiation for new members. The student said there was a myriad of band fraternities and some have groups within groups. The student went on to say inter-band fraternities, including a clarinet section called “The Clones” and an Atlanta-based group called the “Red Dawgs Organization” are responsible for the majority of the hazing in the band. Do you think the University is using Dr. White as a scapegoat to make itself appear tougher on hazing than it really is? Source

‘The Muppets’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are overwhelmingly happy with the big-screen reboot featuring Kermit and the gang. By Kevin P. Sullivan Miss Piggy in “The Muppets” Photo: Muppets Studio It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights. It’s time to meet “The Muppets” for the first time in over 10 years. Everyone’s favorite felt friends are back in a big-screen reboot brought to life mostly on behalf of the hard work of lifelong Muppet fan Jason Segel . The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. (You can see our own rave here .) Critics have praised the return of the Muppets as fun, warm, family-friendly fare, true to the characters and the fans who have loved them for decades. Check out our roundup of the reviews. The Story “A clever idea holds this reboot together, as simple as making one brother (Gary, played by Segel) human and the other (Walter, voiced by Peter Linz) a Muppet in love with the Muppets legacy. (He sports a Kermit wristwatch.) The locale is Smalltown, USA, which Gary and Walter introduce to us in the opening number, ‘Life’s a Happy Song.’ Gary, his schoolteacher sweetheart Mary ( Amy Adams ) and Walter journey to Los Angeles for a vacation. Touring the old Muppet Studios facility, the trio learn of the plan to raze the historically significant and sentimentally priceless structure. There’s oil under the ground, see, and the weaselly millionaire ( Chris Cooper ) after it doesn’t give a Gonzo’s patoot about nostalgia. To preserve the old homestead the visitors must gather together the Muppets from various locales and raise $10 million in a save-the-Muppets telethon.” — Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune The Songs “The setup works like a charm. So do the songs, with several new ones by [“Flight of the Conchords”] star Bret McKenzie . Adams rocks out on ‘Me Party.’ And Segel’s heartfelt ballad ‘Man or Muppet?’ deserves Academy attention as the movie song of the year.” — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone The Comeback “As a theatrical troupe, the Muppets haven’t exactly been AWOL these past dozen years; the gang rocked YouTube in 2009 with their kick-ass rendition of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ But they’ve certainly been lying low while our twitchy, tweet-y times have favored snarkier, more air-quote-driven entertainment, even from puppets. And in a way, that showbiz hiatus has worked in favor of The Muppets. For adults, the movie’s gentle, clever, unironic humor feels freshly, trendily retro now, enhanced by laughs provided in cameos from a very up-to-date roster of stars.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Muppets “These are the same old, adorable Muppets, as sweetly innocent and likable as ever. Winking at itself, the movie is casually, amusingly self-reflexive. In one joke Kermit the Frog considers telephoning President Carter. ‘The Muppets’ makes no attempt to match the wisecracking hipness of the ‘Shrek’ movies. If it doesn’t provoke belly laughs, it elicits many affectionate chuckles.” — Stephen Holden, The New York Times The Final Word “The remarkable thing about the Muppets, then and now, is what distinctive personalities and presences they have. When ‘The Muppet Movie,’ the first in the series, came out in 1979, there was astonishment that — ohmigod! — Kermit was riding a bicycle! How could a Muppet do that? Today, characters can do anything in the movies, but these Muppets are still played by Muppeteers, and they’re still endearing.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Check out everything we’ve got on “The Muppets.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Silent is Golden: A Chat With The Artist’s Leading Man (and Oscar Frontrunner) Jean Dujardin

A little over six months ago, before The Artist premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, it might have been unthinkable to foresee what has since evolved into a very real possibility: Jean Dujardin, a bona fide movie star in his native France but relative unknown in the United States, is as likely as any contender to date to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. Which would be surprising enough without The Artist being a black-and-white French import — a silent black-and-white French import.

‘Again I Got Away’: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Total Recall DVD Commentary is Priceless

Remember the scene in Total Recall where our foe’s eyes pop out of his head at a climactic moment? Well, your ears will perform a similar feat when you hear Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘s Total Recall DVD commentary with director Paul Verhoeven. It’s as monotone, Austrian, and filled with hearty chuckles as you imagine. It is still funny. In fact, it is the best thing I’ve heard all month.

T-Pain Fights Off Auto Intruders, On ‘When I Was 17’

Singer recalls a hazard of living out of your car on latest episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Shakira Atitebi T-Pain Photo: MTV News T-Pain wasn’t always living the lavish lifestyle he has now. The Auto-Tune pioneer opens up about his humble beginnings in this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. “When I was 17, I was living in and out of my ’81 Oldsmobile Cutlass,” T-Pain said on the episode, also featuring Common and “Twilight” star Alex Meraz. “It was pretty beat-up on the outside and the inside, and it had a horrible smell,” T-Pain’s wife, Amber, added. T-Pain’s car put a roof over his head and provided a spot for romantic getaways. “I used to have sex in it a lot,” he offered up bluntly. During one steamy session, T-Pain and his girlfriend at the time were interrupted by intruders trying to break into the car. “It just so happened we were getting dressed,” he recalled. “This guy tries to get into this car.” T-Pain wasn’t worried; his car was filled with tools he could use to fight back. “I got crazy amount of just things in my car,” he said. “There’s some pipes, there’s a wrench. So I’m trying to pull my pants up and chuck this dude at the same time.” The intruder eventually walked away. T-Pain’s girlfriend at the time was frantic and asked him a very ridiculous question. “My girlfriend was screaming. The stupidest question she asked me of that night was, ‘Did you know that guy?’ And I’m like, ‘What? Why would I know this dude?’ ” T-Pain laughed. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring T-Pain, Common and Alex Meraz — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Paula Abdul’s ‘X Factor’ Meltdown: The Full Story

Simon Cowell calls fellow judge ‘very brave,’ while Nicole Scherzinger says eliminating Stereo Hogzz ‘broke my heart.’ By Jim Cantiello Paula Abdul Photo: FOX America, why are you so mean to poor Paula Abdul? On Thursday night’s “X Factor” results show, the emotional judge and mentor was forced to eliminate one of her groups for the second week in a row thanks to her contestants landing in the bottom two of America’s vote. A distraught Abdul brought the live show to a standstill as she refused to eliminate either of her groups, eventually choosing to send home girl group Lakoda Rayne. Ultimately, she was out-voted by the other three judges, who cut Atlanta-based R&B five-some Stereo Hogzz instead. At an afterparty at the swanky Pepsi House in the West Hollywood Hills, “The X Factor” team recalled how tense and uncomfortable the elimination was for all parties involved. “Part of me didn’t like it, part of me was loving every minute because if it was the other way around, she would have really gone for me,” Simon Cowell snarked before getting serious and defending his old friend: “She loved [Stereo Hogzz,] and it was her big hope,” he said, explaining why Abdul was extra emotional. Host Steve Jones, who’s caught flack in the press for being so strict with the judges, was beside himself over how it played out on television. “I feel terrible I was complicit in that meltdown,” Jones told MTV News. “I was upset. I don’t want to see Paula like that. I know she’s a professional but I am too and my job is to get an answer from her. And if I can’t get an answer, then she abstains, and I move on. That’s the way that the show works. “But I got like five producers screaming in my ear, ‘Steve, we need an answer. OK, she’s not gonna answer, move on. No, wait, she is gonna answer. Move back!’ And chuck Simon Cowell into the mix going, ‘Back off! Leave her alone.’ Whoa, everybody’s giving me major major abuse here from both inside my head and outside my head,” Jones recalled through the haze of a head cold. Despite having words with Jones on the air, Cowell praised the way the host handled the situation. “Steve was in a difficult position. He had to explain the rules, and I think once the rules were explained to us, I didn’t even know [them], then she had to make the decision. I think [Paula] was very brave.” Judge Nicole Scherzinger added, “I was crying as well. I’m an artist first, not a judge. And I know what it feels like [to be rejected,] and I know how much it means to them, and it broke my heart. It broke my heart to send someone home.” Meanwhile, Abdul chalked up her category’s rough start to producers not introducing groups in a way that endears them to viewers. “Our job is to really help America connect with [group members] individually as well as who they are as a group. It’s a learning curve, first season.” Abdul was still upset at the after party, visibly wiping away tears after huddling with her remaining group, Lakoda Rayne, on the red carpet. But the Rayne girls insist they have no hard feelings towards their mentor, even though she had just cast a vote against them. “I could only imagine what Paula’s going through emotionally,” Lakoda’s Hayley Orrantia said. “We can’t blame her for what she said and had to do. We know that she does love us and support us, and we’re here to win this for her.” Fellow judge L.A. Reid was also sympathetic to Abdul’s sticky situation. “What was going through my mind is: ‘I’m glad it wasn’t me,’ because Paula’s put in so much time with these contestants. She really mentored them. She did not delegate responsibilities to others. She did the work, so it’s tough for the second week for her talent to be at the bottom of the voting. I didn’t want it to be me.” When asked if he’ll shed a tear if he lands two contestants in the bottom two, the music mogul responded with an eye roll: “Yeah, right.” The Top 10 will battle it out Wednesday night when “The X Factor” takes on rock music, a theme Cowell spilled to MTV News. Good news for Abdul: She has only one group left, meaning another judge will definitely have a contestant up for elimination next week. Her “Sophie’s Choice” days are over. Sound off about the “X Factor” elimination in the comments below! Related Artists Paula Abdul

Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ Gets R3hab Treatment

Dutch DJ/producer talks to MTV News about his ‘XS’ remix of the hit song and teases one more ‘for the ladies.’ By Akshay Bhansali Rihanna on the set of her video for “We Found Love” Photo: Photopress Belfast/Splash News As Rihanna’s mega-single “We Found Love” continues its chart-topping run, dance music fans have been raving over a string of recent remixes. While superstar DJ/producer Calvin Harris created the song’s euphoric pop/house beat, beatmakers like Cahill, Chuckie and R3hab have cooked up club-ready versions of the track. MTV News recently caught up with R3hab — Harris’ buddy and Afrojack’s mentee — and he talked about his new “We Found Love (XS Remix)” of the song. He also revealed that an additional version for “the ladies” is in the pipeline. “It’s a ‘Halloween’-style [remix],” R3hab explained of the darker tone heard on the “XS” mix released on Tuesday. “I made two versions … one version is more melodic and euphoric. This [first] one is more dark because the lyrics [to] ‘We Found Love’ can also be seen as something dark. ‘We are at the end of the world/ And I still found love.’ So from there came the more darker chord progression and the more darker atmosphere, like Dracula is coming to get you. It’s just got a lot of emotion and that worked out great for me.” R3hab plans to follow up the “XS” cut with a “Surrender” remix; both tracks are named after popular Las Vegas club parties. ” ‘XS’ is more the ‘ravey’ night,” R3hab (born Fadil El Ghoul) explained. “And ‘Surrender’ is more for the [hotel] pool, for the girls. I call it ‘one for the boys, and one for the ladies.’ The boys’ is the hard-rocking ‘Halloween’ version and the other version is more for the ladies; more vocal.” The Dutch DJ went on to compare the guys’ tune to being at the Insomniac festival event in San Bernadino, California: “Like at Escape from Wonderland when 50,000 kids are raving in front of you, you want to play the hard version. And when you’re playing the small, more intimate club, you wanna play the one that’s for the ladies.” Chuckie, Cahill and R3hab’s “We Found Love” remix package is out now. Although the release date for R3hab’s “Surrender” cut is still undetermined, fans should keep all eyes on R3hab, who’s got a monster remix for Katy Perry on the way as well as plans to team up with Afrojack for a follow-up to “Prutataaa.”
