5 Times the Golden Globes Got it Right (and the Oscars Didn’t)

Three reasons to be excited for the Golden Globes: 1.) Tina Fey may give a speech; 2.) Ricky Gervais may enjoy the longest broadcast chucklefit since Ed McMahon left the air; 3.) Every once in awhile, the Golden Globes award the right people and the Oscars don’t. Join us for a stroll into Golden Globe past, where it turns out the HFPA sometimes — sparingly, mind you — executes better judgment than AMPAS.

Seth Rogen Calls Online ‘Green Hornet’ Hate ‘Frustrating’

‘People are saying how bad it is without having seen anything,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News Seth Rogen knew there was nowhere to hide. When he and writing partner Evan Goldberg took on the task of reinventing “Green Hornet” in a post-“Dark Knight” world, there was bound to be mud slung in their direction. Perhaps, though, he didn’t think there’d be so much of it. As Rogen himself put it earlier this year, the production faced “every possible obstacle … to the point that it really just got ridiculous,” including major recastings and the departure of director Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”) during pre-production. Then, once filming was complete, Sony decided to convert the film into 3-D, then pushed the release from audience-friendly dates in summer and December to the perceived cinematic wasteland of January. As every snag became public, websites and fans seemed to turn against the project. “Green Hornet,” the Internet decided, was nothing but squandered potential, a train wreck, something to avoid at all costs. And then a funny thing happened: People started to see the film, and they liked it. A lot. All the while, Rogen and Goldberg sat back and watched the scrum. They had a feeling things would turn around. “It’s something that Evan would constantly have to remind me of throughout the process, in that this is kind of exactly what we thought would happen,” Rogen told MTV News recently. “From the second we thought of doing a movie like this, I remember talking about it like, ‘Everyone’s going to think it’s going to be insane and terrible and we’ll just have to keep our heads down and make it, and then it’ll come out and then people will slowly see that we weren’t nuts and that it was actually a good idea.’ ” That’s not to say all the Web-based hate didn’t get to him. There were times, it seems, that Rogen had to restrain himself from chucking his laptop out the window, or at least from staying offline for a while. “As you get wrapped up in it, as there’s two years of time where people are saying how bad it is, without having seen anything, it does get frustrating and, ultimately, just disappointing, more than anything. You look at these outlets that, as a comic book nerd, I kind of respected at times and thought were interesting voices just say things that are insane and completely uninformed and uneducated and based on no reality whatsoever, and it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, that’s disappointing. I thought these guys were cool.’ But they’re not. They’re just like everybody else.” Now, however, with the film hitting theaters Friday and praise coming from all corners for its entertaining balance between high-octane action and the sort of laughs familiar from Rogen’s earlier comedies, the guy is feeling good. Not that he’s one to brag. “It is nice that people actually have to base their assumptions on the movie now and not just what they think the movie is going to be like,” he laughed. Wiz Khalifa Aims To Be ‘The Best Artist Of The Year’

With a breakout 2010 and his debut album yet to drop, the MC is one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Last year, Wiz Khalifa bested his peers to be named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC , and to kick off 2011, the “Black and Yellow” lyricist has earned a nod as one of our 11 in ’11 stars to watch. “It’s great,” the Pittsburgh MC told MTV News about the honor. “I got a lot of work to do. I’ve done a lot of work to get where I’m at, but I have to keep working. And, hopefully, I’ll be the best artist of the year.” The upstart artist began his ascent years ago in the underground with a series of mixtapes and independent projects, most notably the Rostrum Records release Show and Prove and last year’s breakout Kush and Orange Juice. The lanky 23-year-old’s breezy sound and green-friendly rhymes inspired a slew of followers, which he dubbed the Taylor Gang for their dedication to the old-school Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers and their laid-back attitude. That cult following helped Wiz soar past Jay-Z prot

Cake Try For ‘Classy And Grandiose’ In Showroom Of Compassion

After a six-plus-year wait between albums, indie rockers didn’t feel obligated to ‘reinvent’ their sound. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea Photo: MTV News “It’s been a long time,” John McCrea sings on the second track of Cake ‘s new album, Showroom of Compassion, which dropped on Tuesday (January 11). For fans who have been waiting more than six years for a new release from the understated indie rockers, it sure has been. And what they’ll get after this long time is signature Cake , albeit with a few adjustments. “We’re not trying to change; we never have,” McCrea told MTV News. “I always thought that was so wasteful for musicians to feel so obligated to reinvent themselves every album. … That said, we do have reverb for the first time on my vocals. I think I had a moratorium against reverb all this time because I didn’t want to sound grandiose.” There’s also more piano, which McCrea said they avoided in the past “because we didn’t want to sound classy. Now we’re a little classier,” he deadpanned. “I think we’re doing what America wants us to do: being classy and grandiose. And rude, with the song ‘Sick of You.’ ” But none of this is news to the real die-hards, who have videotaped live performances of the new songs, studied the lyrics and are already singing along to every word at concerts. “It’s pretty great, especially if you go someplace like France, where the language is French and the album has only been out for a couple months, and everybody is singing the words in English,” said Vince DeFiore, who plays trumpet, keyboard and percussion. After spending years extricating themselves from a label deal, launching their own label and dealing with other issues that “musicians shouldn’t have to deal with in a normal situation,” Cake set about recording the album in an entirely solar-powered studio in Sacramento, California. The conversion turned out to be so efficient, they actually get a kickback from the city now. “As the value of recorded music descends to zero, we get a little check for $25,” McCrea said of their power-grid surplus. But a band whose songs are perennial favorites for use in ads (Apple, Snapple), TV shows (everything from “The Sopranos” to “Chuck”) and movies, shouldn’t have to worry about funds too much. Are there any Showroom songs they think are ripe for commercial use? ” ‘Easy to Crash’ — maybe that would be good for a car that has a really good safety record,” McCrea offered. “I might allow that. I’m pro safety.” Related Artists Cake

Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’: Radio Programmers Weigh In

‘I can see it being another huge hit for her,’ Z100 program director tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/Wire Images You’ve already heard the likes of Perez Hilton and “Jersey Shore” star Pauly D extol its virtues, but with the Monday (January 10) premiere of Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me,” we figured it was time to let program directors at radio stations around the country weigh in on the track too. After all, not only are they the ones responsible for putting the song on the air, but they’re the kind of folks who know a hit the second they hear it. So do they think Brit has another smash on her hands? Not surprisingly, the answer appears to be “yes.” “When I originally heard it in December, it blew me away from the first listen, and the same thing happened when we played it on Elvis Duran’s morning show [Monday]; our Facebook and Twitter pages exploded, ” Sharon Dastur, program director at New York’s Z100 , told MTV News. “People are going crazy for it. They heard the leaked version and loved it, and now they’re loving the official version too. I can see it being another huge hit for her.” “We’re playing it at the top of every hour, and the reaction has been great,” Tommy Chuck, program director at Tampa, Florida, station 93.3 WFLZ added. “Both on Facebook and Twitter, people are glad Britney’s back; [they’re] thanking us for playing the song, telling us how amazing she is, and all the air staff loved it. It’s a solid single, and it’ll be a big hit for her.” And while that initial wave of fan enthusiasm was to be expected, what both Dastur and Chuck said would put “Hold It Against Me” over the top is the song itself, a master-class in of-the-moment pop, courtesy of the world’s foremost experts on the subject, Max Martin and Dr. Luke. “Pop radio is a tough business, and if the song is no good, it wouldn’t make it beyond the initial airplay,” Chuck said. “People are really responding to this song, though, commenting on the ‘dub-step’ element of it. It definitely sounds similar to a lot of the dance tracks you hear [on the radio by] Taio Cruz and Usher and Chris Brown. It continues that whole trend.” “[Britney’s] got a great team around her, and with Dr. Luke and Max Martin, you can’t go wrong,” Dastur said. “The reaction [to the song] this morning was outstanding. I asked some producers about it, because sometimes, we’ll play a song, and the reaction is a little one-way or the other. But this one was through-the-roof positive.” What do you think of “Hold It Against Me”? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears
