New NBC Show Turns Conservative Hypocrite Into Liberal Hero — But Even MSM Ridicules Plot

NBC tonight (10 PM EDT/PDT, 9 PM CDT) debuts a new drama, Outlaw , centered on a conservative Supreme Court justice who, as a gambler and a philander, is a hypocrite played by Jimmy Smits. Realizing his political misdirection, he resigns from the court so he can become a crusading lawyer for liberal causes. But the program is so awful, even MSM TV critics are ridiculing it. (Joe Scarborough has at least one cameo in it.) “The show is so ludicrously dumb that your eyeballs will hurt from rolling so much,” Hank Stuever warned in Tuesday’s Washington Post. In USA Today, Robert Bianco pleaded : “Surely NBC’s joking. There’s awful, and then there’s atrociously, hilariously awful — a line NBC and Jimmy Smits soar across with Outlaw.” He proceeded to describe the show’s premise: A gambling, womanizing, conservative Supreme Court justice who chucks the court to become a crusader for the outcast and oppressed? That’s not a prime-time show, it’s a Saturday Night Live  sketch. We meet Smits’ Justice Cyrus Garza as he’s being thrown out of a casino for counting cards. Outside, he stops to debate a case he’s due to decide with a pretty ACLU protester (because you know those justices, yak, yak, yak) — whom he then beds. But her words move him, and he resigns to become a trial lawyer. Recognizing the commonality of TV shows that ridicule conservatives as hypocrites or people with dark and nefarious motives, Bianco asked: “Do we really need another show promoting another shadowy, conservative cabal, this one with tentacles in the Senate and the court and an anti-Garza agenda?” The take from James Poniewozik on Time.com : Outlaw — sneak-peeking tonight before moving to Fridays — starts in a direction of implausibility and keeps on going. The premise: Cyrus Garza (Jimmy Smits) is the most conservative justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, and the son of a famous and passionate liberal attorney. After his father dies in an accident, Garza re-examines his life and decides to embrace his father’s beliefs. He further decides that the legal system he works in is flawed, in such a way that he cannot do any good as a Supreme Court justice [!]. So he quits the bench and decides to become a freelance lawyer, traveling and taking on highly controversial cases. In the second episode we’ll get liberal guilt-tripping on Arizona, Bianco noted: “Friday, when Outlaw moves to its regular slot, the case involves racial profiling and Arizona’s immigration law.” NBC.com has posted an uninspiring four-minute trailer , which includes a scene with Joe Scarborough playing himself.

What Republicans Don’t Want Voters To Know About Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

When Bush pushed CAFTA through Congress, it was a very close win for the GOP's Big Business allies. The final vote was 217-215( http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2005/roll443.xml ). Although 187 Democrats voted against it– only 15 joining the Republicans in favor– Boehner, Blunt, Cantor, Ryan delivered for their corporate masters once again. For the last month Boehner has been running around the country like a bright orange chicken without a head squawking, “Where are the jobs, Mr. President?” It's an ironic question coming from one of the engineers responsible for passing trade policies that have systematically decimated the basis of America's manufacturing base. Boehner and his cronies– their wallets fat with gargantuan payoffs from outsourcers– have voted for every single bad trade bill that has ever promised to ship American jobs overseas. For Boehner to publicly ask where the jobs are is a slap in the face to every American worker and an insult to the intelligence of every Ohio voter. In the Senate, Obama looked at the exact same CAFTA bill Boehner and the Republicans did. Then-Senator Obama voted against it. ( http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?con… ) Several conservative Senate Republicans voted NO as well (John Thune, Lindsey Graham, David Vitter, Mike Enzi, Richard Shelby…) but voting to send American jobs to slave wage economies: Jim DeMint, Richard Burr, Mike DeWine, Chuck Grassley, Blanche Lincoln, John McCain, Ben Nelson and, of course Miss McConnell. All the Democrats voted against it with the exception of a small handful of corporate whores who habitually vote with the GOP against working families. But let's go back to the House for a moment, where every member has to face the voters in November. Why are Ohio voters thinking of reelecting John Boehner, who has screwed them on WTO, screwed them on CAFTA, screwed them on NAFTA and has the temerity to be boosting plans for more unbalanced trade legislation with a handful of more low-wage countries. I know he wants to destroy the standard of living of American workers and make them into serfs but who does he think will be buying American goods and services to keep our consumer-driven economy afloat if there are no decent jobs? Not everyone can be a caddy or bartender! Instead of asking Justin Coussoule for another quote about Boehner's record on jobs and how it has devastated businesses and the economy from Butler County up through Darke, Miami and Mercer, we took a look at a perfectly framed ad by Rob Miller, the former marine running against Joe “You Lie” Wilson. Although South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham warned that CAFTA would be disastrous for South Carolina's textile industry and small businesses (and voted NO), at the last minute Wilson was persuaded by Boehner's slick blandishments and voted YES, along with Gresham Barrett and Bob Inglis, both of whom have been disposed of by tea party activists. Miller's TV ad should leave Wilson reeling: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUWs7IlR020 ) We caught up with Rob this morning and asked him if Wilson, just one Member of Congress, really hurt South Carolina with his vote. We knew the answer but we wanted to see how Rob would put it. He put it well: > When Joe Wilson went to Congress in December 2001, South Carolina’s > unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Today, 10.8 percent of > South Carolinians are without jobs, including 112,500 people who > have lost their manufacturing jobs. > Manufacturing was the backbone of South Carolina’s economy, until > unfair trade deals like CAFTA went into effect. CAFTA sent thousands > of our jobs overseas, and people all across the state knew that > would happen before the first vote was cast. > But that didn’t stop Joe Wilson. Joe Wilson voted for CAFTA and broke > his promise to protect South Carolina’s workers, sending their jobs to > Central America. The real insult is that Joe Wilson cast the deciding > vote for CAFTA. If Wilson voted “No” CAFTA would not have passed. > It was that simple, and Joe Wilson didn’t have the courage to do what’s > right. South Carolina towns are dying– people are struggling to put > food on the table– and it all comes down to Joe Wilson turning his back > on South Carolina’s workers by voting “Yes” for CAFTA. I hope lots of Democrats watch Rob's ad. Similar ones would be especially effective against Roy Blunt (R-MO), Mike Castle (R-DE), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and John Boozman (R-AR) four particularly corrupt Wall Street darlings who are all trying to upgrade from the House to the Senate. It may also be useful for Democrats in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and New Mexico to keep in mind as Charlie Bass, Mike Fitzpatrick and Steve Pearce try to slip back into office without letting voters know they were major players in the battles to pass CAFTA and similarly toxic trade bills. added by: toyotabedzrock

The Gossip Girl Pun Index: Forget Paris

Welcome back, Upper East Siders! The season premiere of Gossip Girl arrived last night with haute couture, the Eiffel Tower and… well, not much else. It was a quiet kick-off, without much scandal, sass or Chuck Bass. Not even Gossip Girl herself seemed on her game — though kudos to Kristen Bell for wrapping her tongue around all those heavy French vowels. Voulez-vous puns? To the index!

Shameful News Industry Willing To Sacrifice Wikileaks To Get Shield Law | Techdirt

http://techdirt.com/images/topic_journalism.gif A few weeks ago, we noted, with some disappointment, that the politicians who had been pushing for a much needed federal shield law for journalism, Senators Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein, were taking the politically expedient route of adding a specific amendment designed to keep Wikileaks out of the bill's protections( http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100804/10343410497.shtml ). Apparently, a bunch of newspaper folks have apparently stepped forward to support this move. Douglas Lee, at The First Amendment Center has an opinion piece calling those people out for sacrificing their overall principles just to get the shield law approved( http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/commentary.aspx?id=23303 ). The whole thing is a great read, but a few key snippets: > > It doesn't seem all that long ago that representatives of the newspaper > > industry would have recoiled from working with Congress to deny legal > > protection to anyone who leaked confidential or classified documents. > > Today, however, they seem happy to be doing so. Lee the goes on to quote various industry reps distancing themselves from Wikileaks and putting it down as “not journalism.” He also quotes them admitting that they feel they have to throw Wikileaks under the bus, or the law won't get passed, and then calls them out on the impact of that decision, hinting at the fact that at least some of this might be due to traditional journalists simply not liking new upstarts that are changing the game — like Wikileaks. > > As comforting as it might be to “real” journalists to incorporate editorial > > oversight into a shield law and to use it to distinguish further between the > > “us” who are entitled to the law's protections and the “them” who are not, > > at least two dangers exist in that approach. > > First, does anyone — including the most mainstream of traditional journalists > > — really think it a good idea that Congress and judges define, analyze and > > evaluate what is appropriate “editorial oversight”? For decades, news > > organizations have struggled to resist those efforts in libel cases and, > > so far, those struggles have succeeded. If those same organizations > > now invite legislators and judges into their newsrooms to see how worthy > > their reporters are of protection under a shield law, they shouldn't be > > surprised if the legislators and judges decide to stay. > > Second, is the free flow of information really served if the act's protections > > are denied to those who don't have or practice editorial oversight? > > As Schumer acknowledged in his statement, the act already contains > > language that would limit or deny protection to those who provide or > > publish classified military secrets. Specifically exempting WikiLeaks and > > other organizations that might otherwise qualify for protection under the > > act in at least some cases seems designed not to enhance the free flow of > > information but to channel that information to mainstream sources. It is the nature of politics today to compromise principles to get things through, but this move certainly seems unfortunate — and one that I imagine many news organizations will regret down the road. added by: toyotabedzrock

Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV Drops The Day He’s Released From Prison

Wayne will also headline a homecoming concert the same day, says YM president Mack Maine. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lil Wayne’s Young Money army are loading up and getting ready to unleash a wave of new music towards the end of this year and next year. The youngest of the Young Money crew, Lil Twist and Lil Chuckee, are working the Net and the mixtape circuit, as are Jae Millz and Gudda Gudda. Tyga, who’s performing shows in South Africa this week, just dropped a video for his Lil Wayne-featured “I’m On It,” and of course, his Chris Brown collaboration “Deuces” is an undeniable people-propelled hit. The record was a mixtape song, but through requests and video play on MTV Jams and “106 & Park,” it’s become a number-one hit. Young Money president Mack Maine says that Tyga has an official second single coming soon and is hoping the company releases his album before 2010 is over. If not, look for Tyga at the top of 2011. The biggest Young Money releases this year, of course, are coming courtesy of the leader of the family, Lil Wayne. Weezy has a 10-song project called I Am Not a Human Being that will be released digitally on his birthday, September 27. YM has tentative plans to come right back with more Weezy on November 5. That album, of course, will be his

Katie Holmes In Talks For Adam Sandler’s ‘Jack And Jill’ Cast

Sandler plays both title roles in the film; Holmes would play Jack’s wife. By Adam Rosenberg Katie Holmes Photo: Soul Brother/ Getty Images Adam Sandler plays both of the title roles in his upcoming comedy “Jack and Jill,” but he’s making room for one more: Katie Holmes. The “Batman Begins” star is in talks to join the cast as Sandler’s wife, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The Thanksgiving-set story centers on Jack (Sandler), a family man whose twin sister (also Sandler) pays a holiday visit and then doesn’t leave. In a bizarre twist, the movie also stars Al Pacino … as himself. “Jack and Jill” will be directed by Dennis Dugan, a longtime Sandler cohort. He most recently directed the former “Saturday Night Live” comic in “Grown-Ups,” “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” but their relationship extends as far back as “Happy Gilmore.” The story comes from an idea and a script from Ben Zook, and Robert Smigel and Steve Koren have both done work on it as well. Sandler is producing the film with his “Happy Madison” partners Jack Giarraputo with Todd Garner. Holmes has led a pretty low-key existence since her 2005 roles in “Batman Begins” and “Thank You for Smoking.” She starred in the 2008 indie comedy “Mad Money” and appeared in one episode of the short-lived sitcom “Eli Stone” that same year. She also has a pair of 2010 indies in her corner: the Kevin Kline/ Paul Dano-starring comedy “The Extra Man,” which was released earlier this summer, and the ensemble drama “The Romantics,” which arrives in September. Holmes has a busy year ahead of her though. In addition to “Jack and Jill,” which is expected to be released next year, she also stars in Guillermo del Toro’s horror remake “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” and the upcoming miniseries “The Kennedys,” in which she plays Jackie Kennedy. Holmes is also set for director Dito Montiel’s “Fighting” follow-up, the crime thriller “The Son of No One.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

NBC’s Chuck Todd Projects ‘Democrats Are In Deep, Deep Trouble’

If Democrats weren’t nervous about November’s midterm elections yet, they could soon be, especially when you consider that even their allies in the liberal media are starting to forecast doom for them, as NBC’s Chuck Todd did on Tuesday’s Today show, going as far to predict “Democrats are in deep, deep trouble.” Todd, appearing in the 7am half hour of this morning’s Today show explained to viewers that ” The Tea Party has provided an enthusiasm boost to the Republican Party,” however he reminded Democrats that they still had “six weeks to turn this around” but then added that “if they don’t, they are headed for an historical defeat in November.” Interestingly though Todd and his NBC colleague Kelly O’Donnell, in her set up piece, didn’t exactly paint a big Republican win as a defeat for liberals, as they couldn’t even bring themselves to attach that label to any Democrats running in 2010. While Todd and O’Donnell used the “conservative” label a total of four times between them, neither of them used the “liberal” label even when they discussed Florida Representative Kendrick Meek who has a lifetime ACU rating of 7 and a lifetime ADA rating of 92 percent.  The following O’Donnell set-up piece and Todd segment were aired on the August 24 Today show: ANN CURRY: Now to politics. Voters are heading to the polls in five states today headlined by primaries in Florida and Arizona that pit the political establishment against Washington outsiders. NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell is in Phoenix this morning, with details on this. Kelly, good morning. [On screen headline: “Primary Day, Incumbents Battle Outsiders In November Preview”] KELLY O’DONNELL: Good morning, Ann. That’s right. From Phoenix to Florida to Fairbanks voters are deciding some of the most talked about races this year. They include well-known incumbents and some very interesting outsiders and including is John McCain, who will start right here. He has spent more than $20 million in campaign cash and some of that was left over from his presidential run in 2008. Senator John McCain says he has something to prove. JOHN MCCAIN TO VOTER: Thank you very much. O’DONNELL: Going for a fifth term in this anti-incumbent year. (Begin ad clip) MCCAIN: I appreciate your support. I ask for your vote. (End clip) O’DONNELL: Means fighting off a conservative challenger and that requires fighting against Barack Obama once again. MCCAIN: I’m running against his policies and what he and his administration have done to this country, but at the same time I’m running for Arizona. I’m running for jobs. I’m running for keeping people in their homes. J.D. HAYWORTH: I’d really be honored to have your support in the primary. O’DONNELL: Opponent J.D. Hayworth, a former congressman, accuses McCain of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants. HAYWORTH: This is really true. O’DONNELL: McCain exposed a 2007 TV show where Hayworth was a pitch man on how to get free government money, hardly the Tea Party conservatism he talks about today. HAYWORTH: Even if they have some concerns about me and even shocking for me to feel that my personality may rub people the wrong way, the fact is they know I will vote against amnesty. O’DONNELL: Turning to Florida’s crowded senate race, Democrats are caught in a class struggle. KENDRICK MEEK: I’m the true candidate for the middle class. O’DONNELL: Miami Congressman Kendrick Meek has moved from long shot to leader in the polls up against self-made billionaire Jeff Greene, who’s glitzy social life gets him attention. The winning Florida Democrat will be in a three-man race in November against Tea Party conservative Marco Rubio and Governor Charlie Crist, who quit the Republican Party to run as an independent. And there’s a cold snap in Alaska’s Republican Senate primary. UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Hi, Senator. How are you? O’DONNELL: Incumbent Lisa Murkowski. LISA MURKOWSKI: I’m not working for the party. I’m working for Alaska. O’DONNELL: And Sarah Palin is working against Murkowski with a Facebook page endorsement of challenger Joe Miller. Palin writes, “Alaskans can trust Joe to not shed his conservative antlers in D.C.” And there’s some history there. Palin defeated Senator Lisa Murkowski’s father when Palin became governor. So there’s been a long rivalry there. And of course it all ties back here. Palin, of course, was here in the spring trying to help out her former running mate, at a time when he looked very vulnerable as one of the incumbents who was being targeted this year. But a lot has changed. Today McCain is the frontrunner with a double-digit lead. Ann? ANN CURRY: Alright Kelly O’Donnell this morning. Kelly thanks. Chuck Todd is NBC’s political director and the chief White House correspondent for NBC News. Chuck, good morning. CHUCK TODD: Good morning, Ann. CURRY: We just heard from Kelly that John McCain is ahead, at least according to the polls, by double digits. But he had to spend like $20 million while his opponent spent just about $3 million. So what does that tell us about what’s going on in Arizona, Chuck? TODD: Well look, John McCain had to do this the old-fashioned way in politics, he’s winning ugly. The $20 million was necessary. He always had about 35 to 40 percent of the Republican conservative electorate down there that wasn’t crazy about him, was upset about him on immigration, on taxes, on a number of issues. And so McCain had to disqualify J.D. Hayworth. And here is what we found out, Ann. As upset as voters are these days about Washington politicians, infomercial hucksters are even worse and that’s what McCain did. He completely disqualified J.D. Hayworth. The big question, Ann, that a lot of people in Washington have is, which John McCain comes back to Washington? Is it this new consistent conservative and is a consistent thorn in the side of President Obama or is it the guy from the early part of this decade who was unpredictable and he didn’t know which side of the aisle he’d come down on a different issue? CURRY: Let’s, let’s talk, move on to Florida. Why should the whole country be paying attention to what’s happening there? TODD: Well look this Democratic Senate primary, it’s kind of nuts, it’s kind of this, but a Kendrick Meek win, by the Miami congressman, means the Democratic establishment cannot flee the Democratic nominee there. They can’t go over to Charlie Crist. And the big picture is this. Florida held up the country on who was gonna be president in 2000. Because we don’t know which way Charlie Crist is gonna vote, if he’s gonna be with the Democrats or the Republicans, on election night if he wins – and there’s no guarantee he’s gonna win, this is gonna be a nutty three-way race, maybe the best campaign in this state since Claude Pepper lost because his sister was a thespian. But what we won’t know is whether, is whether, who’s gonna control the Senate? Charlie Crist could hold that up for weeks. CURRY: On the question of who is gonna control the Senate and actually Washington, are incumbents as weak as we thought they were going to be, Chuck? And what, what is what you’re looking at in terms of these races telling us about the true party of the Tea Party, true power of the Tea Party? TODD: Well look, here’s, here’s what we know. Look incumbents are not getting defeated in these primaries at a clip that a lot of people expected. There’s been a few high-profile exceptions. But the bigger picture is this. Democrats are in deep, deep trouble. The Tea Party has provided an enthusiasm boost to the Republican Party. They are as excited about voting as the Republicans have been since 1994. Democrats have about six weeks to turn this around because if they don’t, they are headed for an historical defeat in November. Losses that could not just include control of the House but also the Senate with or without this, the, what happens with Charlie Crist in Florida. It is that bad right now for Democrats, Ann. CURRY: Alright, on that note we’ve got leave it. Chuck Todd, always a pleasure. Thanks. TODD: You got it.

Todd: ‘Anthropological’ Obama Didn’t Mean To Demean With Bitter-Clinger Line

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them…And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. “And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”  — candidate Barack Obama, remarks at fundraiser, April, 2008 Discussing with Andrea Mitchell today the kerfuffle over Pres. Obama’s Christianity, Chuck Todd hearkened back to PBO’s infamous bitter-clinger line. Obama offered his pronouncement at a private, hoity-toity fundraiser in San Francisco—and Todd claimed Obama didn’t mean to demean by it.   According to Todd [quoting Paul Begala], Obama is his mother’s son, and like the anthropologist she was, he was simply offering an anthropological analysis of the plight of those poor rural Pennsylvanians. CHUCK TODD: I would say the real danger for the president on issues like this, is less about this, and more about–Paul Begala one time said this to me–he said, you know, the guy really is his mother’s son sometimes when it comes to studying society.  He’s anthropoligcal about it.  Remember that time when he was studying people in Pennsylvania, and he said to that fundraiser in Pennsylvania, you know they cling to their guns.  He wasn’t meaning it as demeaning in his mind, but it came across that way. ANDREA MITCHELL: It’s intellectualized. TODD: He’s the son of an anthropologist, and I think sometimes he goes about religion that way, almost in this, as I said because he’s very well studied on, not just Christianity but on a lot of religions, but in that, frankly, anthropological way, and that can come across as distant. Todd speaks of the bitter-clinger line as the fruit of Obama’s “studying” people in Pennsylvania.  Is there evidence Obama undertook a study of rural Pennsylvania, or was this simply what it sounded like: cocktail chatter for the oh-so-smart set?  Question for Chuck: how do you know that “in his mind” Obama wasn’t meaning it as demeaning? I can’t top HotAir’s analysis of just how demeaning Obama’s statement was, so let me simply quote it: What’s most offensive? The condescension displayed here by the intelligentsia’s candidate of choice? The sheer breadth of the stereotype, which would send Team Obama screaming from the rooftops if a white politician drew a similarly sweeping caricature of blacks? The crude quasi-Marxist reductionism of his analysis, which he first introduced in his speech on race vis-a-vis the root causes of whites’ “resentment” — namely, exploitation by the bourgeoisie in the form of corporations and D.C. lobbyists? Or is it the shocking inclusion of religion, of all things, in the litany of sins he recites? What on earth is that doing there, given His Holiness’s repeated invocations of the virtues of faith on the trail? Note the choice of verb, too. Why not just go the whole nine yards and call it the opiate of the masses?

‘Piranha 3D’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Dive into the campy horror flick with these fun facts! By Eric Ditzian Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D” Photo: Gene Page / Dimension In a year when 3-D has seemed to take over the multiplex — you almost can’t walk past the candy counter without dodging flying spacemen, fire-breathing dragons or Johnny Depp in a wacky top hat — “Piranha 3D” might win the award for most outrageous flick of them all. It might simply be the bloodiest and raunchiest film ever to be presented in three dimensions. It was actually a running debate among the cast, when we visited the Lake Havasu, Arizona, set in June 2009, whether the movie showcased more blood or more boobs . No definitive answer was ever reached. Directed by horror maven Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”), the movie is the most high-tech installment of the “Piranha” horror/comedy franchise, a series spearheaded in 1978 by producer and schlock guru Roger Corman and then helmed by James Cameron in 1981. This time, the movie takes place during spring break, when thousands of hormone-addled college students descend on a sun-drenched resort spot just as an earthquake unleashes a swarm of prehistoric piranhas with a taste for blood. And boobs. Unlike those unfortunate spring breakers, MTV News is not unprepared for these nasty fishies. We’ve been tracking the production for years and now present a blood-soaked (though still family-friendly version of our big-screen cheat sheets: everything you need to know about “Piranha 3D.” Before Disaster Strikes The script had been floating around Hollywood for years — Aja first read it five years ago — and made its way into the hands of several potential directors, including Chuck Russell (“The Scorpion King”), before Aja signed on. “It’s going to be unique because it’s going to be completely in 3-D,” Aja told MTV News at Comic-Con in 2008. “I think people don’t realize the effect of all the elements coming out from the screen at you. It’s very traumatic.” The film was supposed to go into production that same year but was eventually delayed because of weather and location concerns, as well as the general difficulties of shooting a 3-D film set on the waterfront. “There’s so many problems that we’re going to have to solve,” Aja told us early in 2009. “After doing a movie with mirrors where it was kind of like a nightmare to avoid all the reflections, making a movie in 3-D underwater and on the water is going to be the biggest challenge.” But the production delays did not damper the filmmakers’ enthusiasm about the project. “We realized that, with the advent of 3-D, that we thought we could make the ultimate ‘Jaws’ for this generation ,” producer Mark Canton (“300”) told us in early May ’09. “It’s a multi-invasion. You have the invasion of youth expecting to have that wild spring break, and then you have the invasion of this prehistoric, rather unpleasant species.” By that point, the cast was in place: Elisabeth Shue as a local sheriff, Jerry O’Connell as an adult-entertainment producer, Jessica Szohr as a college student, Christopher Lloyd as a scientist and Richard Dreyfuss, returning to the water decades after his starring turn in “Jaws.” Production kicked off days after our chat with Canton. Boobies and Blood MTV News swooped into Lake Havasu in June, chatting with the cast and trying to wrap our heads around the madness. “The movie is going to be insane, because as much blood as it has, it has the equal amount of boobies,” co-star Paul Scheer laughed. “It’s boobies and blood. And we supply the boobies!” “This movie is probably going to win the record of most dead people — and most blood and most nakedness and most everything,” co-star Kelly Brook added. The shoot wrapped up at the end of the summer, and it wasn’t without its perils. “I get claustrophobic, so when we were in a boat, I was kind of halfway under water at one point and it was like a really small little cage,” Szohr told us . “I was freaking out, actually. I was like, ‘I can’t breathe! I can’t get out of here!’ ” Before the summer-movie season kicked off in earnest, Aja gave MTV News a call to assure us that as bloody and breast-filled as we thought his movie was going to be, we had no idea what he had planned. “There’s going to be 3-D double-D boobs!” he laughed. “I want to know exactly how many different girls’ boobs are in the movie. I think it’s a lot. I think blood-wise, I have to get the final number, but we are beyond anything you can even imagine.” Don’t Go in the Water We got a few gruesome clues about Aja’s crazy plans when the first trailer dropped in May, delivering CG fish and lots of unclothed flesh, much of which the fish promptly chew to shreds. A couple of months later, a few more clips popped up online, once again showcasing a ton of flesh and blood, a lovely boat ride that turns into a bikini-filled horror show, Shue going for an unexpected midnight swim and Szohr getting freaked out that “there’s something in the water!” Indeed there is, Jessica. Indeed there is. “It’s a fun horror movie,” Scheer told us recently. “The same way when you saw ‘Jaws,’ and you were like, ‘Oh, this is fun.’ Lately a lot of horror is like, ‘I’m going to cut your toe off with this razor blade.’ This is going back to the date, fun horror movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . NBC’s Todd Frets Obama’s Effort to ‘Tackle’ Nation’s Problems Allowed Enemies to Defame Him as Muslim

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams cited a “stunning number” from “a reputable pollster” (Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press) – which discovered “just under 20 percent of the American people believe the President is a Muslim” when “he is not” – to justify a full explanation from Chuck Todd on the mischaracterization of Barack Obama. “Look, let’s be clear,” NBC’s chief White House correspondent declared, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States and he is a Christian.” Without pointing out how confusion and ignorance about Obama’s religious affiliation extends beyond just Republicans and conservatives (41 percent of Democrats and 31 percent of liberals “don’t know” Obama’s religion), Todd fretted: “Ever since Mr. Obama became a national political figure, some of his political enemies have fanned the flames of religious prejudice by trying to make people believe the President is a Muslim.” Todd despaired that Obama’s focus on his job had left him vulnerable to abuse: During the campaign, Team Obama repeatedly refuted these charges with a special Web site they created called FightTheSmears. Well, when he took office, the anti-Obama campaign continued, but the White House tackled a slew of other issues, and efforts to refute those other attacks took a backseat. Completing his delivery of White House talking points, Todd asserted: “Ironically, Brian, during the campaign, some of the President’s political enemies attacked him for the way he practiced Christianity in Chicago where his minister – the Reverend Jeremiah Wright – was a controversial figure.” Over on FNC, however, Major Garrett noted that “while Mr. Obama’s political opponents are more likely to believe he’s a Muslim, uncertainty has seeped in the President’s political base.” In his piece for Special Report with Bret Baier, Garrett featured a soundbite from Alan Cooperman, the Associate Director of the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, who also appeared in Todd’s story. In the clip run on FNC, Cooperman observed: Less than half of Democrats say the President is a Christian [46%]. Less than half of African-Americans say the President is a Christian [43%]. Less than half of people who give Obama positive job approval ratings say he’s a Christian. Indeed, Pew’s report, “Growing Number of Americans Say Obama is a Muslim” ( Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life version; Pew Research Center for the People & the Press version) found: A new national survey by the Pew Research Center finds that nearly one-in-five Americans (18%) now say Obama is a Muslim, up from 11% in March 2009. Only about one-third of adults (34%) say Obama is a Christian, down sharply from 48% in 2009. Fully 43% say they do not know what Obama’s religion is…. Among Democrats, for instance, 46% say Obama is a Christian, down from 55% in March 2009. The belief that Obama is a Muslim has increased most sharply among Republicans (up 14 points since 2009), especially conservative Republicans (up 16 points). But the number of independents who say Obama is a Muslim has also increased significantly (up eight points). There has been little change in the number of Democrats who say Obama is a Muslim, but fewer Democrats today say he is a Christian (down nine points since 2009)…. But even among Democrats, fewer than half (46%) now identify his religion as Christian, down from 55% last year. On Thursday night, ABC’s World News skipped the poll numbers, but the CBS Evening News squeezed in a short item from Harry Smith in a newscast devoted almost entirely to Katie Couric in Afghanistan: The White House said today President Obama is a Christian and prays every day. A spokesman felt is necessary to make that clear after a poll came out showing a significant number of Americans believe the President is Muslim. 18 percent think so. That’s up from 11 percent last year. From the Thursday, August 19 NBC Nightly News: BRIAN WILLIAMS: A new opinion poll from a reputable pollster in this country just out today is getting a lot of attention tonight because it contains a stunning number. Just under 20 percent of the American people believe the President is a Muslim – he is not – on top of a growing number of people who believe he’s foreign-born – and he is not. We go behind these numbers tonight with our chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd who’s in our Washington newsroom. Chuck, good evening. CHUCK TODD: Good evening, Brian. Look, let’s be clear. President Barack Obama was born in the United States and he is a Christian. But ever since Mr. Obama became a national political figure, some of his political enemies have fanned the flames of religious prejudice by trying to make people believe the President is a Muslim. In fact, with some of these same political enemies who helped ignite another phony claim that the President wasn’t born in the United States. Well, during the campaign, Team Obama repeatedly refuted these charges with a special Web site they created called FightTheSmears. Well, when he took office, the anti-Obama campaign continued, but the White House tackled a slew of other issues, and efforts to refute those other attacks took a backseat. In March 2009, according to Pew Research, about half the country – 48 percent – correctly identified the President as a Christian, 11 percent believed he was a Muslim, and about a third – 34 percent – had no idea of his faith. Now these results are even more striking. Only 34 percent correctly told Pew pollsters that Mr. Obama is a Christian, while a whopping 18 percent – or nearly one in five Americans – say he is a Muslim, and 43 percent have no idea of his faith at all. Well, earlier today, I asked Alan Cooperman at Pew Research to explain why, in the face of clear evidence that the President is not a Muslim, that a growing number of Americans believe he is. ALAN COOPERMAN, PEW FORUM ON RELIGION AND PUBLIC LIFE: In the absence of information from the White House and from the President himself about his faith, about his faith life, about him going to church, messages from others – innuendo and rumor included – are able to maybe gain currency. TODD: Ironically, Brian, during the campaign, some of the President’s political enemies attacked him for the way he practiced Christianity in Chicago where his minister – the Reverend Jeremiah Wright – was a controversial figure. Now, today the White House said the President is a, quote,  “committed Christian,” and prays every day. But aides said they were not surprised by the poll findings because, as one put it, quote, “The President doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve,” Brian.
