Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Calls ‘Transformers’ Gig ‘A Roller Coaster’

‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ star talks at CinemaCon about working with director Michael Bay. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Photo: Getty Images Now that we’ve entered the month of April, it seems justifiable to start hyping this summer’s potential blockbusters. Not that we haven’t been already, but it feels like the big summer movies are just around the corner — one of those being the highly anticipated “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” MTV News caught up with the franchise’s new leading lady, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, recently at CinemaCon to discuss her experience on the film and getting caught up in director Michael Bay’s workaholic web. “I’ve seen the last two movies, so I kind of knew what I was getting into, but obviously not at all as well,” Whiteley said of being a bit overwhelmed by the big movie experience. “It was a crazy opportunity that was handed to me, and I spent seven months making the movie with a great cast and a great director, and it’s been a roller coaster of a lifetime for sure,” she said. “I’m still on it, I don’t know if I’m going to get off anytime soon.” Regarding Bay, Whiteley described him as a “character” with lots of energy: “I think throughout my whole career, I’ve never seen anybody work so hard in my whole life,” she said. “He’s literally done these ‘Transformers’ movies for six years now. As cast, we do the filming for seven months, then he goes into the edit room and edits it for six months, then he comes out of the edit room and promotes it, and by the time he’s finished that, he’s prepping the next one,” she explained. “It’s amazing to see how dedicated he is to these films.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Hangover Part II’ Is ‘More Epic’ Than Original, Director Says

‘People are going to be really surprised,’ Todd Phillips tells MTV News. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: Warner Bros. Who’s afraid of the wolf pack? If the just-released trailer for “The Hangover Part II” is any indication of what moviegoers can expect come May 26, then it’s a whole lot of crazy antics. Yes, even crazier than before. The two-and-a-half-minute clip features the “Hangover” wolf pack — Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha — up to their old tricks (losing someone after a boozy night on the town, finding exotic animals in their bathroom) in a new setting (they’ve gone from wreaking havoc in Las Vegas to Thailand). So when MTV News caught up with “The Hangover Part II” director Todd Phillips at the 2011 CinemaCon in none other than Vegas, we had to ask if there were any way the sequel could live up to the wildly successful 2009 comedy. Phillips, who was also at the helm of the original (which brought in more than $467 million worldwide), said he believed “The Hangover Part II” is actually better than the first. “Audiences have really responded in the same way,” Phillips said of the reaction to the follow-up. “It’s just been out of this world. I think people are going to be really surprised.” In fact, Phillips himself gave the movie a stamp of approval that could sway even the most hard-core “Hangover” purists: “I think it’s a funnier film, and I think it’s a more epic film.” And while the 40-year-old writer/director said he still loves the original, he believes the sequel “just turned out to be a more satisfying film.” As if that weren’t enough, it seems the first film, which featured, among other things, drugging a Bengal tiger, a run-in with Mike Tyson and grown men getting tased by children, will be tame compared to the mishaps that occur in the latest. As Phillips explained: “We had less constraints on us — and I don’t mean money; just freedom to do whatever we wanted.” Do you think “The Hangover Part II” will be better than the original? Russell Brand Reveals His Favorite Katy Perry ‘E.T.’ Look

‘Arthur’ star believes, ‘There’s bound to be some extraterrestrials.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Russell Brand Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images In her latest visual creation, Katy Perry takes fans to outer space as an alien looking for her lover in “E.T.” The pop princess dons crazy makeup and several artfully designed costumes as she cascades to another planet to meet her fallen love. Her real-life love, Russell Brand, revealed his favorite look to MTV News. “I like it when she’s that weird one in the beginning all made out of plastic,” he said at CinemaCon in Las Vegas about Perry’s flashy, spacey Floria Sigismondi-directed video , which dropped Thursday. Stylist Carol Beadle explained to MTV News what she had in mind when she was thinking up looks for the trippy clip. “I was looking at jelly fishes and amoebas; those words were constantly used, and we wanted it to look like a flash of an amoeba and then it coming to life,” she said. Brand’s alien love certainly doesn’t begin and end with Perry’s video. The “Arthur” star is an avid believer in all things extraterrestrial. “I happen to believe there is such a thing as extraterrestrials, and that needn’t necessarily make me a crackpot,” he confessed. “There probably are [aliens]. The universe is infinite: There’s bound to be some extraterrestrials. Let’s not worry about it.” In fact, Brand and his lady love aliens so much, they have a romantic trip planned to visit outer space . “I’m so into extraterrestrial stuff,” Perry explained. “It’s very difficult for me to look up into the sky in the middle of the night and not think that our planet is one of … a bajillion. It’s really, really small. And Russell and I are interested in anything extraterrestrial. I mean, we’re going to space!” What is your favorite look in the “E.T.” video? Tell us below!

Monsters, Inc. Duo Heading Back to College for Pixar Prequel Monsters University

In a presentation Tuesday at CinemaCon, Disney/Pixar announced that their forthcoming 2012 sequel to the Oscar-winning Monsters, Inc. will be called Monsters University , and is actually a pre quel to the original exploring the origins of the friendship between Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman). Stars Crystal and Goodman are expected to return along with Steve Buscemi as rival scream-collector Randall Boggs, while a writer and director have yet to be named. Cue the college movie cliché conjecture! What familiar campus experiences might our heroes face — and what do monsters hang on doorknobs if they don’t wear socks? [ THR , First Showing ]

Wiz Khalifa Wins Big, Odd Future Make An Impact At 2011 mtvU Woodies

Two Door Cinema Club and Chiddy Bang also take home big prizes, alongside performances by Sleigh Bells and Foo Fighters. By Kyle Anderson Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator performs at the 2011 Woodie Awards Photo: Getty Images Luminaries from all corners of the indie-rock world descended on Austin, Texas, on Wednesday night (March 16) not only to kick off the annual South by Southwest festival, but also to celebrate the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards . And though Wiz Khalifa and Two Door Cinema Club walked away with the biggest prizes of the evening, the night — and perhaps the remainder of the year — belonged to Odd Future. Foo Fighters got the festivities started on a loud note with a rugged run through their new single “Rope.” While the multiplatinum Foos aren’t technically indie, they certainly practice a lo-fi aesthetic (their entire new album, Wasting Light, was recorded on analog tape), and with their new three-guitar attack, they have become the modern-rock radio version of Neil Young and Crazy Horse (except with shorter solos and better haircuts). Once Dave Grohl and company wrapped up a headbang-worthy extended breakdown at the end of “Rope,” host Donald Glover (he of “Community” fame) took the stage to formally welcome the live audience and viewers at home to the show. “There’s something I wanted to say: Stop asking your black friends to freestyle,” he told the crowd. Still, that didn’t stop Glover from dropping some rhymes once house DJ Skrillex dropped a beat. “It turns out we all can freestyle.” Glover tossed to Skylar Grey and Yelawolf, who were charged with handing out the Best Video Woodie. In a tough category that included crossover stars Vampire Weekend and the Black Keys, Chiddy Bang grabbed the prize for their inventive clip for “Opposite of Adults.” Zoe Kravitz came out and threw to Wiz Khalifa, who spit “Roll Up” (from his forthcoming album Rolling Papers ) from the balcony of the theater surrounded by enthusiastic fans. Once Khalifa hit the stage, the gold light kicked in and the terrible towels started flying, which could only mean one thing: “Black and Yellow.” Khalifa’s pro-Pittsburgh anthem sounded like a massive pop hit — which, coincidentally, is exactly what it was. Woodies veteran Pete Wentz was up next. He gave out the Left Field Woodie to Kanye West, though not before letting the world know that he was “all ‘Free Earl,’ but had love for Tyler.” Weezy was not in Austin to accept his award, but Wentz accepted the prize on his behalf. In the middle of Wentz’s speech, he was interrupted by fellow Left Field nominee Lil B, channeling West’s drop-in on Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs. Meanwhile, Eliza Doolittle drank in the crowd and paid tribute to the late Nate Dogg before tossing to Two Door Cinema Club up on the stage. The jittery Irish trio crooned and jangled their way through their current single “What You Know,” one of the highlights on their debut album, Tourist History. Glover then introduced “My Life as Liz” star Liz Lee, who was up in the balcony to introduce the college radio station that won the College Radio Woodie; the prize went to WVUM of Miami University. Dev and Lil B were up next, onstage to hand out the Best Performing Woodie. “This award is not about who brings the most money, but about who brings the most swag to the performance!” declared Lil B. Matt & Kim apparently have more swag than any of the other nominees, because they won the big block of wood. Matt teased a stage dive from the balcony but settled for high-fiving most of the first row right after encouraging everybody to donate to the relief effort in Japan. Woodies veterans Friendly Fires then introduced Sleigh Bells, one of the most hotly anticipated performers of the evening. The duo made their television debut with the jagged “Riot Rhythm.” Clad in the denim jacket she picked out specifically for the occasion, singer Alexis Krauss shouted, swayed and cooed her way into the hearts of the crowd (though the special appearance by the marching band probably helped — it certainly added to the cacophony). “That was sick!” Glover declared before handing the stage to Chiddy Bang. Chiddy broke out a freestyle before running down the nominees for Breaking Woodie (which included Dev, Sleigh Bells, Local Natives, Wavves and Two Door Cinema Club). Based on fan voting, the winners were Two Door Cinema Club (who announced that it was their first award in America). Last year’s Best Video Woodie winners Matt & Kim took the stage again to give out the prize for Woodie of the Year. They announced that they would not be getting naked (like they did in their award-winning “Lessons Learned” clip), though they did do some slow-motion grinding. When the dust settled, Wiz Khalifa won Woodie of the Year for the crossover smash “Black and Yellow.” The Pittsburgh native seemed genuinely moved by his victory and spent most of his acceptance speech chuckling live on the microphone. But though the last award had been given out, the climax was yet to come. Comedian Aziz Ansari showed up to introduce Odd Future, who used Tyler the Creator’s “Yonkers” as a coming-out party. While the track played, a masked midget came out to impersonate Tyler before getting replaced by the real Tyler. Clad in a pink-and-blue hoodie and green ski mask, Tyler growled his way through “Sandwitches” while stalking the outer limits of the theater and violently stage-diving into the crowd. As the performance evolved, Tyler was joined by fellow MC Hodgy Beats and two furries in costumes. They were eventually dragged off the stage by security, leaving a permanent mark on the show — and on culture at large. What did you think of the Woodies? Share your reviews in the comments! Chiddy Bang Predict ‘Barbra Streisand’ Could Snag Woodie

Duo’s ‘Opposite of Adults’ up against Duck Sauce for Best Video. By Gil Kaufman Chiddy Bang Photo: C. Brandon/ Redferns There’s no reason Philly alternative hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang should be afraid of a matronly 68-year-old standards singer. But, on the eve of the 2011 Woodie Awards in Austin, Texas, “Chiddy” Anamege and Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin are sweatin’ the competition in the Best Video category thanks to “Barbra Streisand.” The Babs they fear is not, of course, the “Yentl” star herself, but the insanely catchy song that borrows her name from DJ duo Duck Sauce , whose video features cameos from Kanye West, the Roots, Chromeo and Vampire Weekend. “I think the biggest competitor in our category is gonna be ‘Barbra Streisand,’ ” Beresin told MTV News about the video that accompanies the poppy dance track. “That video is crazy. It’s like, ‘Oh man, we’re friends with this famous guy’ … They’ve got so many cameos, and it’s shot really well.” While Bang’s clever clip for the MGMT-sampling “Opposite of Adults” has its own merits, not limited to their cartoonishly gigantic heads, they’ve got plenty of stiff competition in the category from some other stellar clips, as well. They’re up against the Black Keys’ lauded schoolyard beat down in “Tighten Up,” Vampire Weekend’s equally cameo-heavy (Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil Jon, RZA and Joe Jonas) “Giving Up the Gun” tennis throwdown and the Gorillaz’ Bruce Willis-starring desert death race, “Stylo.” In fact, theirs is one of the only clips in that bunch that doesn’t have a marquee cameo, so maybe their lo-fi indie sensibility will win the day after all. Performers at this year’s show, hosted by Donald Glover, include the Foo Fighters, Wiz Khalifa, Odd Future, Sleigh Bells and Two Door Cinema Club. As in previous years, Woodie winners will be determined by fan voting. Voting in most Woodie categories closed Tuesday (March 15), but votes will continue to be counted in the Breaking Woodie category right up until the show. The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, March 16, at midnight ET/PT.
