Sex and the City 2, Little Fockers Named Worst Movies of 2010 by Top Critics

Over at Vulture , fifty top film critics — including Movieline’s own Stephanie Zacharek and Michelle Orange — have voted on the worst movies of the year. The winner? Sex and the City 2 , of course! Wrote Stephanie : “Positing itself as a fun girls’ night out, an escapist fashion fantasy, this Manolo-hoofed monstrosity gave us only crass consumerism of the lowest order, a parade of brand names masquerading as style and failing miserably.” Other films on the list: Furry Vengence , Grown Ups , The Last Airbender and, shockingly, Black Swan . It would be a critics’ list without some controversy! [ Vulture ]

Damon Lindelof Helps Write Sideways Universe Version of Sex and the City 2

Say what you will about Damon Lindelof, but the man has a knack for parodying bloated Hollywood excess. You’ll recall that last June Lindelof wrote a BP-themed sequel treatment for Esquire titled Armageddoner! , and now he’s back with an alternate version of Sex and the City 2 . Don’t worry, fans; this version doesn’t feature a big meeting of all Carrie’s ex-boyfriends in a church at some unknown time in the afterlife. It does feature a fatwa, though.

I’ve done a lot of work to get where I’m at, but I have to keep working. And, hopefully, I’ll be the best artist of the year.” The upstart artist began his ascent years ago in the underground with a series of mixtapes and independent projects, most notably the Rostrum Records release Show and Prove and last year’s breakout Kush and Orange Juice. Cory Booker: Can The Nation’s Most Energetic, Twitter-prolific Mayor Resuscitate New Jersey’s Largest City?

For press events, President Obama has the Rose Garden. Cory Booker has the Oprah machine — and Twitter. On a good day, Booker wins. Though mayor of a rather troubled city, Booker is as talented as Obama at cranking national headlines. Both he and the President are old hands at fielding questions from the national press corps. Both huddle with CEOs. Both have been called leaders of the “Oprah Winfrey wing of the Democratic Party.” But only Booker, the young and indefatigable mayor of Newark, New Jersey, has wielded a shovel to dig constituents out after a snowstorm, tackled a fleeing crime suspect as though he were on an opposing Super Bowl team, or appeared beside Oprah to break news about the charitable whims of a 26-year-old billionaire. And only Booker has been known to pump 15 Tweets per hour for a million followers of his 140-character messages, some of which include Bruce Springsteen lyrics, showing a keen aptitude for attracting fans of the Boss. In fact, Booker succeeds where every past Newark mayor failed. “You could say that he had very tiny shoes to fill,” said James Hughes, dean of the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Booker’s predecessors acted more like candidates for prison than for higher office. Five of Newark’s last seven mayors have been indicted on criminal charges, including the last three — Hugh Addonizio, Kenneth Gibson and Sharpe James. “Booker,” Hughes added, “is one of Newark’s greatest resources.” But as talented, and telegenic, as Booker is, the fate of Newark is iffy. The Great Recession has rocked Newark. Poverty rules in its wards, along with piles of rubble and drug-infestation, and the city, now 54% black, is still licking wounds inflicted a generation ago during the race riots of 1967, which persuaded middle class residents to head for the hills. Combating crime was Booker’s first priority, and the city has made significant progress. Booker named a second-generation New York City cop, Garry McCarthy, as Newark police director, a move for which Booker took heat. (Long-time resident Amiri Baraka was so incensed by the appointment of a white police director in a predominantly black city that he reportedly gave the Mayor a book titled “How to Recover from the Addiction to White Supremacy.”) Read More At AtlantaPost.com

Magnolia Shorty Mourned By Lil Wayne, B.G., More At New Orleans Funeral

Fans and supporters gather outside Fifth African Baptist Church to honor late Cash Money MC. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Renetta “Magnolia Shorty” Lowe Photo: Akshay Bhansali / MTV News As fellow Cash Money affiliates Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, Mack Maine and Baby made their way into the Fifth African Baptist Church in New Orleans on Thursday morning (December 30), hundreds of fans gathered outside the church to pay tribute to fallen hometown rapper Magnolia Shorty . In addition to Weezy and his crew, a number of other local bounce artists made their presence felt at the funeral, including Partners-N-Crime, Kilo G, DJ Jubilee, Big Freeda and Ms. Tee, who was the first female artist to sign with Cash Money, followed by Shorty in 1995, who was the label’s second, and last, female member. The closed funeral began at 11 a.m., and while more than 1,000 friends and relatives packed into the brick house of worship, the street outside was overflowing with nearly 1,500 fans paying tribute to the bounce legend. Many were wearing shirts in praise of Shorty (born Renetta Lowe), 28, with messages such as “R.I.P. Magnolia Shorty” and “We Love You Renetta,” as well as buttons that read “Forever ‘Shorty.’ ” Wayne, Birdman and Mack Maine tweeted their condolences in the wake of Shorty’s murder last week, but on Thursday, it was former Cash Money rapper and Hot Boyz member B.G. who remembered his fallen comrade after the funeral. “Magnolia Shorty was like a sister to me and it ain’t just what she meant to me; it’s what she meant to Louisiana, it’s what she meant to New Orleans,” B.G. told MTV News, noting that he was the one who brought Shorty into the Cash Money fold when she was just 12 years old. “She was the queen of bounce. She was someone you loved to be around. She was the best at what she do. I’m really speechless right now, but it ain’t sunk in yet. … She owned this city, but she was this close to ownin’ the world.” The program for the service featured a photo of Shorty under the headline “A Homegoing Celebration for a Phenomenal Queen.” Shorty was gunned down last Monday alongside an unidentified man in a vehicle that crashed near a New Orleans East housing complex. Her murder came seven years after the November 2003 killing of another New Orleans rapper, James “Soulja Slim” Tapp, whose original stage name was Magnolia Slim and who grew up with Shorty in the Magnolia housing projects and gave her the Magnolia Shorty stage name. The funeral was to be followed by a traditional New Orleans second line celebration in which her casket was be paraded down the street accompanied by musicians, friends, family and supporters. Fantasia Concert, Few Other Events Canceled Due To East Coast Blizzard

‘Broadway shows seldom shut down,’ Elisa Shevitz of the Broadway League says. By Terri Schwartz A look at Manhattan’s East Village on Monday Photo: Mario Tama/ Getty Images Flights might be canceled, the subway may be delayed and the East Coast might be buried under a foot of snow, but the spirit of Broadway lives on. Elisa Shevitz, director of communications for the Broadway League, told MTV News that Broadway shows will go on as scheduled. Because of the snow, some attendees who had already purchased tickets may be unable to attend those shows, which means some last-minute hard-to-get seats might be available for more popular shows. Those in the city looking for something to do could potentially snag a seat up front for their favorite Broadway show, although Mondays are normally dark for many Broadway productions anway. But considering subways are delayed and New York City streets are hard for cars and pedestrians to navigate, that probably means a longer commute than usual. The League won’t know how ticket sales were affected by the blizzard until they calculate their weekly grosses at the end of the week. “Broadway shows seldom shut down,” Shevitz said. “The show goes on. That’s the nature of our business.” There haven’t been any reported major concerts cancellations either, but that might be because there weren’t any major concerts scheduled over the Christmas weekend. Prince is performing December 29 at Madison Square Garden, Passion Pit is playing at the Wellmont Theatre in New Jersey on December 30 and 31, and Phish aren’t performing at the Garden until December 30 and January 1. Fantasia’s performance at the Beacon Theatre was postponed Monday (December 27) due to the weather, with the rescheduled show to be announced at a later date. A couple of smaller concerts at venues like the Mercury Lounge were canceled as well. Related Photos New York City Gets Snowed In

REVIEW: Sofia Coppola Brings a Delicate Touch, and Sure-Handed Precision, to Somewhere

Some of those who have already written about Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere have categorized it, in a kind of lazy shorthand, as a movie about the “emptiness of celebrity.” But Somewhere is really a Western — a Western without cactuses or rocks or horses, but one that, even so, takes place under a special kind of sunlight found only in L.A., in an environment that’s wild and ruthless under its veneer of civilization. The character of the land means everything in Somewhere : Wide boulevards lined with palm trees make for an illusory endless frontier; giant billboards advertise nothing in particular — they’re big because they can be. This is a place where you can lose your way without even taking a wrong turn, and sure enough, the hero of this particular story is a man who has temporarily lost himself. Still, the city’s beauty — either sitting in plain sight under the sizzling noon sun or semi-hidden in the dusk — is peculiar and specific and alluring. L.A. — and the idea of Hollywood, if not the actual neighborhood — is heartless and fabulous. It’s a place to really be a man — or not.
