Did Media Negligently Create Koran Burning Controversy?

As the ninth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, and Americans fret about a Pastor they never heard of burning Korans to commemorate the event, people on both sides of the political aisle should be asking a serious question: did the media negligently create this controversy? After all, Terry Jones has a tiny, 50 member, non-denominational church in Gainesville, Florida. Should some unknown Pastor – with a following smaller than what’s normally in line at an In-n-Out restaurant drive-thru! – wanting to burn Korans generate such a media firestorm that an international incident and our national security are threatened? As Mike Thomas of the Orlando Sentinel wrote Wednesday, if you knew the real attention-getting background of Jones, the answer would be a definitive “No”:   This is a guy who looks like Jed Clampett wearing a Hulk Hogan mustache, who uses words like “tragical,” who earlier this year launched a “No homo mayor” campaign against a candidate in Gainesville . Last year Jones sent the kids of the congregation off to school in “Islam is of the devil” T-shirts. Of course they got booted, which got Jones an enticing taste of media attention. With none of this getting Jones the attention he craved, he decided to put a truck in a field with a sign on it saying, “International Burn a Koran Day”: It was like the three strawberries coming into alignment on a million-dollar slot machine. The New York Times and The Associated Press whipped out their notepads. The networks and cable stations broke out the indignant anchors. Indeed they did as evidenced by NewsBusters reports here and here . And, as Thomas pointed out, Jones is just eating it up: This is someone who can barely scrape together enough people to carry a tune in church, and now he has the world breathlessly waiting for his next words. He is a regular Moses on the mountaintop, urging the spineless Christians to take a stand against the Muslim hordes. That all this might get some 20-year-old kid from Ohio blown away in Afghanistan isn’t about to stop Jones now. The good pastor has done found his version of 72 virgins and is living in paradise. Indeed. And who are really to blame? We created the Rev. Terry Jones from dust. And in two weeks, to dust he shall return. Then we’ll move on to the guys who plan to run over the Quran at their monster-truck pull. Whatever it takes to keep your attention. We could help head off such future nonsense if we folded up the circus tent and left Jones alone with his blowtorch and 30 followers. Maybe if Gen. Petraeus told the media that it isn’t Rev. Jones who is endangering troops. That it is our coverage of Rev. Jones. That without us, this book burning would be little more than a grainy video on YouTube . Exactly. America like any country has its share of crazy people with crazy ideas. If such folks were ignored rather than given such a huge platform to spread their word from, we would all be the better for it. Unfortunately, just as media were exactly what Jones needed, he fit their bill perfectly. For weeks now, the press as a result of America’s opposition to the Ground Zero mosque have been trying to convince the citizenry that we are an Islamophobic nation that hates Muslims. Despite the lack of any supporting evidence, this has been the media narrative for approaching a month. With this in mind, an attention-seeking, unknown Pastor advertising a Koran bonfire was exactly what the press needed to prove once and for all just how much antipathy there is for Muslims here. Sadly, they gave this guy his fifteen minutes of fame without any regard for the harm that could be done to Americans living abroad, in particular those fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. More hypocritically, so-called journalists are now blaming Jones for endangering the lives of others. Wouldn’t this not be the case if they ignored him? Isn’t it all the press attention he’s gotten that has actually caused this controversy? If media really are worried that his actions might result in an international incident, given how few people there are in his own area that care what he’s got to say, couldn’t they just similarly pay him no mind? Consider that Gainesville and surrounds has 258,000 residents. This means that two-hundredths of one percent of the population of this city are members of his church. Right now there are probably more media vans in Gainesville than people who care what this guy says. Can’t press members claiming they’re concerned with what his Koran burning will do just pack up those vans, go home, and do us all a favor? If nobody was there to cover the event Saturday, maybe Jones would change his mind and start thinking up his next attention-getting event. On the flipside, this controversy has done us all a favor in exposing the media’s hypocrisy concerning so-called “Islamophobia.” Consider that the press are largely in favor of the Ground Zero mosque despite being in the minority concerning this matter. They base their view on the Islamic center backers having the Constitutional right to build at that location regardless of how anyone feels about it. Yet, these same people are now in an uproar over Jones without a care for his Constitutional right to burn Korans. As such, the media have shown themselves far more concerned for the feelings and the rights of Muslims than Judeo-Christians, and far more worried about offending foreigners than the 67 percent of Americans who are opposed to the Ground Zero mosque. I guess we have Jones to thank for making this hypocrisy apparent to us.

Insane Clown Posse Talk Tila Tequila, Method Man Incidents At The Gathering

‘We’ve got nothing but love for Method Man and Redman,’ Violent J tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope Photo: MTV News Back at the beginning of August, one of the biggest music festivals of the year took place over a long weekend in Illinois. No, not Lollapalooza — the 11th annual Gathering of the Juggalos, the four-day extravaganza curated by and starring the Insane Clown Posse. The festival has grown in both size and stature over the past few years, in part because of the online success of trailers that tout the festival and in part because of its increasingly eclectic lineups. But this year, the Gathering picked up some attention for more negative reasons. A good portion of the mainstream media coverage of the festival reported on the injuries suffered by reality star and sometimes rapper . She suffered a number of injuries and threatened to sue ICP, though according to Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J, nothing of that sort has happened. The pair regret what happened to Tequila and are still trying to figure out her motivation. “The only reason she got hurt was that she stayed up on stage. It was obvious they didn’t want her there, so why did she stay up there?” ICP member Violent J told MTV News. “It was a shame, because all she had to do was get off the stage,” he continued. “Nobody said, ‘You have to get on there and stay up there to get paid.’ The way I understand it, they paid her before she got up there and they said, ‘There’s a rumor you’re not wanted here, and you’re free to take off if you like.’ She went up there and stayed up there anyway.” Legendary Wu-Tang Clan rapper Method Man also suffered a facial laceration after getting hit with flying debris during his performance with partner Redman. That bothered the men of ICP, because they feel it misrepresented the tenor of their fans. “What happened to Method Man — that shouldn’t even be discussed, because that was one a–hole,” Violent J said. “One d—head threw something, and by chance, it hit [Method Man] in the face. But he wasn’t speaking for Juggalos or for ICP or the Gathering. And they weren’t getting bombed up there — it was one a–hole.” “That kid shouldn’t have thrown something and should have played the lottery instead,” added Shaggy 2 Dope. “Same chances.” But while ICP aren’t sure what their status is with Tequila, their relationship with Meth is copacetic. “We’ve got nothing but love for Method Man and Redman, and we’ve talked to them since then. We talked to them that night and we talked to him just the other day,” J told MTV News. “And if we had caught the kid who threw that, he’d a got it.” Related Artists Insane Clown Posse Method Man Tila Tequila

Lady Gaga Poses As Lady Liberty On Magazine Cover

Pop star poses alongside Marc Jacobs for the New York issue of V Magazine. By James Dinh Lady Gaga on the cover of V Magazine Photo: V Magazine, LLC As evidenced by her recent well-publicized attendance at a Mets game and her glorious Madison Square Garden show, Lady Gaga has always repped for her hometown of New York City. So it’s no surprise that Gaga is paying tribute to the Big Apple by posing as the Statue of Liberty alongside fashion guru Marc Jacobs on the fall cover of V Magazine . Posing with Jacobs, a shopping cart and an old TV set, Gaga stands with her mouth slightly open in a black lace bra and panties with a gray dress sliding off her body. With her toned abs and her hair shaped into a crown, the pop star is holding a burning torch, mimicking the New York landmark. And while Gaga does her best impression of the neoclassical sculpture, Jacobs remains serious and firm, sitting on top of the television in a traditional black-and-white suit. In another photo, the singer is seen crouched in the carriage as she’s pushed around by the fashion designer with her torch held high. Just last year, the singer appeared on the fall issue of the magazine donning Jacobs-designed pieces. In the issue, which is on sale now, V Magazine highlights some of New York’s most profound figures, people they say “are making the city their own way.” Editor Stephen Gan revealed that he chose the pop star because her representative values parallel those of the magazine. “Just as the Statue of Liberty was France’s gift to America, Gaga is, to us, New York’s greatest gift to pop culture and fashion,” he said in a statement. “She embodies everything V is about, and is also a beacon of the city’s creativity and hope. Exactly one year after her first V cover (the first fashion magazine cover she was on), we decided to do the NEW YORK issue, and she was the first person who came to mind to represent our great city.” Gan declared Gaga “a bonafide genius” and credited her as V Magazine ‘s “muse” of inspiration. “Above all, a New York issue should celebrate people who’ve done great things. We at V are grateful Gaga came along to put the New back in New York!” he concluded. But the singer doesn’t always leave fashion editors with the best impression. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour spoke about the pop star during her stop at “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” on Wednesday. “We had Lady Gaga this year,” she said of the singer’s performance at this year’s Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala. “She was communing with God and she was praying in the back, waiting for God to tell her it was all right to actually go onstage.” Wintour chuckled before revealing that Gaga left the audience waiting for more than 40 minutes. Katy Perry Goes Futuristic In ‘Teenage Dream’ German TV Spot

Pop star shoots 90-second commercial to current single as she channels characters including Marilyn Monroe. By James Dinh Katy Perry in her commercial for German TV channel ProSieben’s “Star Force” Photo: Capitol/ ProSieben From whipped-cream-loaded bras to pink cotton candy clouds, Katy Perry has delivered her share of eye-catching visuals throughout the unveiling of her Teenage Dream album. And in a new commercial for German TV channel ProSieben’s “Star Force,” she keeps the momentum going as she cranks up the colors and jumps into the future. In the 90-second spot , which is basically an alternative, shortened mini-video for her single “Teenage Dream,” the singer plays a sort of singing robot inside the walls of a beaming city building from the future. As it begins, we see a woman with lots of frosted makeup robotically walk alongside skintight-clad space people towards a moving door. They approach a still and assumingly “turned off” pop star until a juke box turns on and plays the familiar tune. Bringing to life a futuristic Katy Perry, the singer channels Marilyn Monroe’s iconic fluttering-white-dress look. The singer then transforms into a 1950s housewife with a polka-dot geometric dress. But with a blink of an eye, that look is gone in favor of a superhero-gone-sex-kitten look. Riding a flaring rocket that floats before a building window, Perry shoots into the city lights before doing her spokesperson drop: “We love to entertain you.” The commercial serves as a drastic change from the singer’s official video for “Teenage Dream,” which depicts her driving around the sunny hills of California and canoodling and dancing the day away in an empty parking lot. In one clip, she serves up as sing-along robot while the other portrays her “come venture with me” persona. Even though both clips remain vastly different from one another, the carefree atmosphere is still apparent. Whether they’re dancing around a beach half-naked or decked out in 1950s attire, Perry is surrounded by a party you could only wish to be part of. Which “Teenage Dream” concept do you prefer: the road trip romp or the futuristic extravaganza? Share your thoughts below! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry
