‘The Karate Kid’: Crane Shot, By Kurt Loder

Jackie Chan sets up a star turn for the surprising, young Jaden Smith. Jaden Smith in “The Karate Kid” Photo: Columbia Pictures Is there a generation of 12-year-old girls out there yearning for a 12-year-old action-hunk to obsess about? If so, their prayers have been answered. In “The Karate Kid,” Jaden Smith, in only his third film, emerges as a charismatic star with what would seem, to this non-12-year-old girl, to be a precocious romantic appeal. The movie is a sort-of remake of the 1984 “Karate Kid,” which turned 23-year-old Ralph Macchio into a generational touchstone back in the day. Here, the bones of the original story remain, but they’ve been freely reassembled. In the first film, Macchio’s fish-out-of-water character had been forced to relocate from New Jersey to California — a puny challenge in this global age. Now, Smith’s character, Dre Parker, has to relocate all the way to China with his widowed mother (Taraji P. Henson), who’s been transferred there by the company for which she works. (A vague plot element, but really, who cares?) So Dre arrives in Beijing, friendless and alienated, and enrolls in some sort of international school. He hates his life. But then he meets a cute girl, a violin prodigy named Meiying (angel-faced Wenwen Han), whose disapproving father will soon complicate their budding relationship. Then, unfortunately, he meets a less-charming group of local hooligans led by an older kid named Cheng (Zhenwei Wang), who immediately start pushing him around. Dre tries to retaliate with some meager karate moves he learned off television back in the States, but the hooligans just sneer. Karate is a trifling Japanese discipline; the native Chinese martial art is kung fu (or, more precisely, I suppose, wushu). As we see, the movie’s title is entirely vestigial. One day, during a beatdown by Cheng and his friends, Dre is rescued by the maintenance man in the apartment building he now calls home. This is Mr. Han, and he’s played, in a bit of perfect casting, by the great Jackie Chan. Chan is such a warm and appealing presence that his entry into the story gives it a new emotional glow. Unbeknown to anyone, Mr. Han is actually a kung-fu master who has withdrawn from the world following a personal tragedy about which we only later learn. Informed that Cheng and company are members of a kung-fu team called the Fighting Dragons, he takes Dre to their training school to try to smooth things over. There, however, they also encounter the Dragons’ instructor, the snarling Master Li (Rongguang Yu), whose exhortations to his students (“No Mercy! Our enemies deserve pain!”) suggest that he hasn’t entirely internalized the spiritual component of his chosen art. At the point where Mr. Han volunteers Dre for an upcoming kung-fu tournament in which he’ll face off against the various Dragons, we begin a long wait for that showdown to actually happen. The movie runs nearly two-and-a-half hours, and you can tick off whole sequences that might have been cut, mainly welcome-to-Beijing travelogue footage of the city’s streets and parks and exotic markets (fried scorpions!). There are some lovely scenes at a sort of kung-fu temple high up in the mountains, and a visually arresting (if implausible) training session with Mr. Han and Dre high atop the Great Wall. This material takes up a lot of time, though. Presumably, having gone to considerable trouble to stage these and other interludes (including a rarely allowed visit to Beijing’s Forbidden City), director Harald Zwart was reluctant to compress them. Still, the movie flows. And the classical simplicity of the story leads us along smoothly to the high-flying tournament confrontation that concludes the picture. (Although the famous “crane kick” of the 1984 film, which belatedly crops up at this juncture, comes out of nowhere and for no particular reason.) Chan himself, who’s now 56 years old, doesn’t whip out any of the astonishing acrobatics for which he’s become famous over the last 40-odd years; but any slack in that department is skillfully taken up by Jaden Smith, who underwent what must have been intense training to develop whiplash martial skills of his own. As an actor, with his thoughtful composure and subtle humor, he strongly resembles his father, Will Smith, who co-produced the movie with his son’s mom, Jada Pinkett Smith. Happily, what they have wrought is not an exercise in rich-and-famous nepotism — it’s a showcase for a worthy heir. The kung-fu kid delivers. World Cup Street Festival Cape Town

The City of Cape Town is getting ready to launch into the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in style, with a 10 hour-long “Cape Town Welcomes the World Party” on the eve of the official kick-off. The party on the Grand Parade on Thursday 10 June 2010 will be the culmination of the City’s many hospitality initiatives, and will be built around the theme of welcoming the world to the southern tip of Africa. Local residents and visitors will have the opportunity to be part of the celebration and get into the football spirit. About 25 000 people are expected on the Grand Parade for a concert featuring an exciting line-up of mostly local artistes. The concert will start at 14:00, and at 18:30 flaming torches will light a cauldron on the City Hall balcony – from which Nelson Mandela made his first speech after his release – to signal the start of the carnival parade. At 19:00, the Rainbow Parade featuring 2 000 Cape Minstrels will move through the city centre. The party will also include the switch-on of eight colourful soccer streetlight displays in Adderley Street. About 10km of rope lights was used to create the displays. These use 55% less energy than traditional light bulbs. “The City wants to position itself as the party capital of the world. This party promises to be bigger, better and safer than any of the previous parties,” said Cape Town Executive Mayor, Dan Plato. Law enforcement officials will be out in full force, and trains will run until 01:00. Bus services – including the City’s newly-launched MyCiTi service, will also be operational. Food and art stalls as well as toilet facilities will be available. Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson, posed for photographs with some of the performers at a preview event. “It’s very exciting, after four years of planning – in which we built a stadium and a transport system – it’s finally here. “And in just over a month, it’s all going to be over, so we’ve got to grab this opportunity and make the most of it,” he said. More details about road closures will be published closer to the time. Published by Martin Pollack 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

Big Apple? More Like Big Brother

Citing the specter of terrorism, an appeals court overturned a decision that would have forced New York City to turn over documents detailing the surveillance of demonstrators, street performers and other ne’er-do-wells who may have threatened the 2004 Republican convention … and our national security, of course. New York Times: More than 1,800 people were arrested and fingerprinted during the convention, but lawyers for the civil liberties group, representing some of those arrested, were seeking the documents to see how and why arrests were made and what information the police may have had before they made the arrests. In recent years, the city has paid millions of dollars to many of those who sued after their arrests, asserting that they had been improperly taken into custody. Many were herded into pens at a West Side pier in Manhattan that was dubbed Guantánamo on the Hudson. Read more Related Entries May 31, 2010 What’s Not to Like About Civil Rights? Green Roofs Now Required by Law in Copenhagen

Photo via Inhabitat A new policy adopted last month has made green roofs required by law on all new buildings with roof slopes of less than 30 degrees. The initiative is one part of the city’s plan to become totally carbon neutral by 2025, Inhabitat reports (via GOOD ). And it’s pretty impressive how much new green growth the policy will lead to: … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Defense: seeing my clients tattoos violates his right to fair trial

SALT LAKE CITY — Defense attorneys believe that the tattoos that have become synonymous with Curtis Allgier — who is accused in the killing of a corrections officer — may put the man at risk of an unfair trial. Allgier, 30, “is covered from head to toe in tattoos,” the defense motion states. His eyes peer out in the midst of the words “Skin Head,” numerous swastikas and myriad other white supremacy and neo-Nazi symbols. Defense attorneys want to cover up his many tattoos, and defense attorney Ralph Dellapiana said they're “pretty much stuck with heavy makeup” when it comes to options. It is the tattoos on his face, neck, chest, arms and hands that the defense is concerned about, saying that allowing the tattoos to remain visible would be “prejudicial and would violate his due process right to a fair trial.” Dellapiana said the motion was filed because they want to avoid associations with Adolf Hitler, which they believe may be triggered by the swastikas. “If that's how they start off the case, thinking about Curtis Allgier like he's some monster equivalent to Adolf Hitler, then they're not going to be able to keep an open mind about the facts of the case,” he said. The defense want the jury to be able to hear the facts of the case and come to know Allgier as a person without being distracted by the tattoos. Dellapiana acknowledged, though, that there isn't a lot of guidance from similar cases and he isn't sure what the judge will do with the motion. The defense was apparently alerted to the issue by way of reader comments on Internet news stories. “Counsel for defendant have noted that since defendant was arrested on this case, numerous public comments to news stories about defendant have focused on defendant's neo-Nazi and white-supremacy tattoos and made comments that were vulgar and derogatory,” the motion states. Allgier's appearance and his white-supremacist beliefs caused a stir as recently as April after the inmate scheduled a wedding on Hitler's birthday that was later canceled. The defense then states that while covering the tattoos would “substantially change Allgier's appearance from the way he looked” on the day he allegedly shot and killed officer Stephen Anderson, 60, and potentially impact the state's case, the potential prejudice in Allgier's case would outweigh the issues a cover-up would cause the state. Allgier is charged with capital murder in the death of Anderson, and prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty. He is facing a number of other charges, including aggravated escape, aggravated robbery and three counts of aggravated attempted murder — all first-degree felonies. Prosecutors contend that Allgier stole Anderson's gun, shot him, carjacked a vehicle and then led police on a chase in which he twice tried to run over a deputy who was setting up road spikes before trying to kill a restaurant worker and customer at an Arby's restaurant. No trial date has been scheduled, but his next court appearance is set for Sept. 1. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700037680/Defense-wants-Allgiers-tats-covered… added by: Stoneyroad

Courteney Cox Wants Friends Movie

Sex and the City 2 just keeps on wreaking havoc, doesn’t it? Now it’s prompted a jealous Courteney Cox to resurrect her own bigscreen transfer. “I wish we could do that with Friends ,” Cox told the LAT . “The thing is, the characters from Sex and the City hopped all over Manhattan. On Friends , we were always stuck in the apartment and that coffeehouse.” Then again, Sex 2 wasn’t afraid to shake up its surroundings with a relocation to Abu Dhabi. Imagine the potential of ladies shedding their burqas to reveal their very own “Rachel” haircuts to an appreciative Jennifer Aniston! [ LAT ]
