The Farmers’ Market of the Future

Image credit: City of Toronto Years ago, the City of Toronto knocked down a lovely old market building to create a one storey concrete shed of a market that was a perfect embodiment of Toronto at the time: cheap, expedient and ugly. But now the city has greater ambitions, St. Lawrence Market is a going concern, and one storey buildings don’t have a long life in a booming downtown. The City ran a limited competition and the judges unanimously chose a winner: Rogers Stirk Harbour and Adamsons Associates “Red Team” entry…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Will Taylor Lautner Be Shirtless In ‘Abduction’? Lily Collins Thinks So

‘I’m sure they’ll work out something to make sure he does [lose his shirt] at some point,’ she laughs to MTV News. By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lilly Collins Photo: Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — At this point in Taylor Lautner’s young career, two things are clear: There is a hunger to see him in movies outside the “Twilight” franchise, and Hollywood is all-too-eager to give the fast-rising leading man work. Over the weekend, as Taylor worked the MTV Movie Awards crowd with his formidable charm and trademark smile, his next leading lady was eager to talk about the film they’re about to shoot together. “I’m off shooting this summer for ‘Abduction’ with Taylor Lautner ,” said 21-year-old Lily Collins, most recently seen in the Oscar-winning film “The Blind Side,” on the Lautner project often described as a younger Jason Bourne movie. “It will be a thriller with action, lots of stunts.” Sigourney Weaver recently signed on to the high-profile flick, which will be Lautner’s first true post-“Twilight” performance (we’d count “Valentine’s Day,” but we blinked and missed him). Directed by John Singleton, Lautner stars as a teen who stumbles upon his baby picture on a missing-persons website — setting off a massive quest to find his true identity. “Three months of hanging out with Taylor,” grinned the stunning Collins, dripping with sarcasm. “I don’t know what I’m going to do!” But in the minds of many Twilighters, there’s only one important question that needs to be answered before they fork over their hard-earned money for a ticket: Will Taylor be displaying that now-famous torso of his? “I’m sure they’ll work out something to make sure he does [lose his shirt] at some point,” Collins admitted. “Which everyone would totally hate, right?” A few moments later, Taylor would take the stage alongside his “Twilight” co-stars to unveil an exclusive “Eclipse” scene and pick up a few Golden Popcorns as well. Many in the crowd would have gladly given up their black T-shirts for a chance to meet TayCob, and soon enough, Lily will be working alongside him for months. But, as she told us, they’re already tight. “We’re friends,” she said. 13,000 Cyclists Take Over Toronto Highways

We often complain about how Toronto favours the driver over the cyclist, but for one day a year cyclists rule the city as the two main highways are closed down for the Becel Ride for the Heart , a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation sponsored by a margarine company. (Michael Pollan would not approve ) So while the … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Is Energy Literacy Our Biggest Challenge? Confessions of a Coal-Fired Pizza Addict

Image credit: Other Brooks Brother & HowStuffWorks Not long ago I was in New York, and was surprised at the number of restaurants proudly proclaiming that they sold “coal-fired pizza.” Having established that we were, indeed, talking about coal – not charcoal – I found myself outraged that folks could see burning coal in the center of the city, or anywhere for that matter, as a desirable selling point. I mean, what’s wrong with wood? That outrage has been on my mind a lot lately, because as we watch the public fail to grasp the connecti… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Will Ferrell Weighs In On Sandra And Scarlett’s MTV Movie Awards Kiss

‘The Other Guys’ star says the smooch between ‘Sandra and Charlotte’ was one of the high points of the night. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Scarlett Johannson and Sandra Bullock at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: MTV When he could remember the names of the actresses involved, actor Will Ferrell told MTV News that he thought that the surprise kiss between Generation Award recipient Sandra Bullock and presenter Scarlett Johansson was one of the evening’s high points. When asked what he enjoyed seeing the most during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, he said, “I can say Sandra Bullock and Charlotte,” meaning Scarlett Johansson. Unflappable even in the face of the gaffe, Ferrell nodded and corrected himself. “Scarlett Johansson. She goes by Charlotte, though — she usually drops the ‘S.’ ” After being presented with her Generation Award, recipient Sandra Bullock shared an unexpected lip-lock with Scarlett Johansson during her acceptance speech. Truth be told, their smooch actually legitimized Johansson’s spot on the stage alongside fellow presenters Bradley Cooper and Betty White — after declining to say anything during the Generation presentation, Johansson finally admitted she was there in place of “The Proposal” star Ryan Reynolds, who was nominated alongside Bullock for Best Kiss, and she and Bullock initiated an impromptu make-out session in response to, well, losing the award. Even without the kiss, the presentation of Bullock’s Generation Award was unquestionably one of the highlights of the show. As Johansson deferred to her co-presenters, Cooper provided a litany of weird nicknames for his “All About Steve” co-star, and then stepped aside as White recounted many of the movies in Bullock’s storied career, albeit wildly inaccurately. Bullock’s gracious and funny acceptance speech paid homage to her collaborations with Cooper and White, made light of her recent personal woes and then she petitioned attendees and viewers to go back to making fun of her. During his own appearance, however, Ferrell and his “The Other Guys” co-star Mark Wahlberg hung above the Movie Awards stage in a suitably awkward recreation of the film’s advertising campaign while their fellow castmembers Eva Mendez, Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson presented the award for Best Villain. Wahlberg was outraged when Tom Fenton, Harry Potter’s Draco Malfoy, thanked an extensive list of supporters, friends and family. Ferrell, meanwhile, offered a few unsolicited comments about the growing pain in his groin from the harness that held him in the air. Robert Pattinson Reflects On ‘Twilight Saga’ Success At MTV Movie Awards

‘I just have to keep working to not explode,’ he tells MTV News of the wild ride. By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — A long time ago, in a faraway land (OK, maybe it was just Portland), the stars of the “Twilight” series were nobodies. Hopes weren’t terribly high when that girl from “The Messengers,” Mike Dexter from “Can’t Hardly Wait” and the kid who died in the “Harry Potter” movies came together to shoot Stephenie Meyer’s first novel. But as the “Saga” stars dominated another MTV awards show this weekend, Robert Pattinson couldn’t help but marvel at how far they’ve come. “It’s crazy,” the spiky-haired superstar marveled at the MTV Movie Awards , looking back on simpler times. “For it to have accelerated so quickly.” At the 2008 Movie Awards, the first “Twilight” film was barely approaching the end of production when some last-minute scrambling had Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart walking the red carpet … so unnoticed that they had to go back and start again because no one was stopping them for questions. Well, except us . “I should have done a more coherent speech for the Global thing,” RPattz said of his Global Superstar win, appreciating the massive audience all over the world that has tuned in over the past few years to hang on his every word (that is, when he’s not being cut off by the host ). “It’s just so ridiculous.” The 2009 Movie Awards were the culmination of the chaos, as KStew and RPattz’s initial wave of fame swept over Universal City. This time, the stars were accompanied by Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene, Taylor Lautner and Peter Facinelli — many of whom weren’t even invited the previous year. By the end of the night, they were the new kings and queens of the show. “I still don’t have any idea what’s going on,” Rob admitted to us backstage this year. “I just have to keep working to not explode. “I’m incredibly appreciative of every little piece that’s come together,” he concluded, flashing that same charming, uneasy grin that he’s brought with him to Universal City for the past three years, “so I can be living this ridiculous life.” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com . Lindsay Lohan Singles Out ‘The Hangover’ For Best Movie

‘It was actually on the other day at my apartment,’ the actress says at the MTV Movie Awards. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lindsay Lohan at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We’re not sure if she was making a good-natured joke about her legal situation , but when asked on the red carpet of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards which of the Best Movie nominees was her favorite, Lindsay Lohan singled out Todd Phillips’ blockbuster comedy “The Hangover.” “I thought ‘The Hangover’ was hysterical,” Lohan said, offering an example of her devotion to Phillips film. “It was actually on the other day at my apartment. It was really funny.” At the same time, Lohan admitted that “The Hangover” was just one of her favorites among the nominees, which include “Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” and, of course, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Lohan explained, “I’m a fan of all of them, and they’re all different. I mean, ‘New Moon’ has this sci-fi element and I know ‘Avatar’ does too.” Lohan has appeared at several past MTV Awards ceremonies, including in 2004, ’05, ’07 and ’08, where she was a presenter and attendee at both the Movie and Video Music Awards. Meanwhile, Lohan shared the red carpet with the castmembers of “Jersey Shore,” a show which she says she’s familiar with, even though it hasn’t prepared her for conversations with its resident lothario, Mike “The Situation.” When asked what a conversation would be like between the two, she said, “I haven’t watched it that much, so I don’t know. We’ll have to see when I meet him.” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com. Kings Of Leon Debut New Songs At Tour Kick-Off In Atlantic City

Eclectic Borgata crowd is treated to a set packed with Only by the Night hits and brand-new tracks. By Kyle Anderson The Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill Photo: Barry Brecheisen/ WireImage ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — Past the rows of neon slot machines, beyond the over-priced fusion eateries and light years away from the weekenders and senior citizens looking for their latest lucky break, Kings of Leon delivered a rock show. Atlantic City seems like an inappropriate place for America’s current biggest and most workmanlike rock band. Their steady rise — from indie darlings to radio stalwarts over the course of five albums and seemingly non-stop touring — doesn’t gel with the get-rich-quick glamour of the gaming tables of the Borgata. Still, that didn’t stop KOL from launching their latest summer tour from the Event Center located inside that very casino. In a ballroom more fit to host Fredo Corleone’s birthday party than a loud, sweaty rock show, the quarted overcame the artificial nature of their surroundings to deliver what has become the definitive rock show of the current era. In theory, Kings of Leon really shouldn’t work. They’re four dudes from Tennessee who have always had a greater following in Europe and whose sound is constantly morphing from album to album. Along the way, they’ve augmented their Southern-kissed approach to indie rock with healthy doses of dirty-water blues, U2-style stadium fireworks, old-school Aerosmith guitar solos and bits of funk, hardcore and scuzzy ’60s garage rock. Their palette seems almost too broad. And yet they manage to impress just about everybody. The cross-section of the 2,500 or so people jammed into a ballroom upstairs at the Borgata didn’t have very much in common (in one corner, beer-chugging MMA fans; over there were the bespectacled indie types; oh look, there’s a bunch of dads), save for one thing: They all went absolutely ape every time Kings of Leon hit one of their now-signature “whoa-oohs” during any number of massive sing-alongs. In fact, the only time the crowd didn’t hang on every word was when the group unveiled a handful of new tunes, each of which carried its own personality. The best was a sort of Zeppelin-flavored blues romp that imported a bit of Loretta Lynn for good measure. It struck just the right balance between melt-your-face rocking and twang-drenched beauty, and it’s going to be a huge hit. Even frontman Caleb Followill seemed to acknowledge the lightning they had bottled. “You don’t know these songs,” he warned before launching into the new material. “But one day you will, and you can say you were the first people to ever hear them.” Armed with little more than a single video screen behind them, Kings of Leon sounded like a band in mid-stride, not a group just starting back up again. “We haven’t played in a while, so we’re a little nervous,” Caleb announced to the crowd. Maybe nerves work for them, as the 90-minute set they laid out — relying heavily on the smash album Only by the Night — was sharp and on point. The band hit their biggest singles hardest and with a laser-like precision: “Sex on Fire” was a soaring four minutes of hedonism, while “The Bucket” had a spacious beauty that is somewhat lost in the recorded version. Most impressive was “Molly’s Chambers,” which has morphed into a metallic grind that closely resembles Nirvana’s “Breed” (and that’s a compliment). As the group ended their encore with “Use Somebody,” the entire crowd was nearing a lighter-waving, body-swaying moment of transcendence, and by the time Kings of Leon hit the final notes, it seemed like most of the revelers had arrived. Then they were quickly shuffled out the door and back into the slot-machine-fueled wonderland below, where it’s doubtful anybody was able to capture the same sort of high. MTV Movie Awards Host Aziz Ansari Planning Plenty ‘Avatar,’ ‘New Moon’ Jokes

‘You never know what Aziz is going to throw in there,’ host’s writing team tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Aziz Ansari Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Nothing is sacred anymore, including fan favorites “New Moon” and “Avatar,” which are tied for five nominations each at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . The writing team working with Aziz Ansari said anything can happen once the “wild card” host hits the stage. “There’s a lot of things we can’t make jokes about,” writer Mike Mitchell told MTV News backstage at the Gibson Amphitheatre, during a break from writing for the show. “You never want to be too mean.” But, as his colleague Dave Ferguson added: “You never know what Aziz is going to throw in there.” Already planned and on the docket are jokes and moments that are “super political this year,” fellow writer Chelsea Peretti added: “So a lot of that and then some crazy dancing.” While she might not have been referring to the epic “New Moon” vs. “Avatar” battle , that too seems pretty political. So where does the crew of Movie Awards writers stand on the issue? “I’m gonna go with ‘New Moon,’ ” Peretti said. “I love it! I’m sorry, everyone.” In a battle of the sexes, her male colleagues all picked “Avatar,” which they teased would be very well-represented in the show’s jokes. Mitchell had a whole other team he wanted to join: “I’m on Aziz’s team!” There is one moment the writers teased that they think fans will really enjoy, aside from RPattz and KStew sightings. “I think there’s a reunion of sorts on the show; I think I can say that. … [A] ‘Cosby Show’ reunion,” Mitchell joked, before really sharing: “There’s an MTV reunion of sorts I believe on the show as well. Is that too much to say?” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
