‘Glee’ Get Wistful With Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’

Rachel and Finn turn to the 1984 classic for a melancholy moment. By Aly Semigran Cory Monteith and Lea Michele in “Glee” Photo: FOX For all the Christmas songs out about mistletoe and merriment, there seems to be just as many, if not more, about loneliness and loss (’tis the season!). While this week’s Christmas-themed episode of “Glee” was heavy on the warm, fuzzy aspects of the holiday, things were anything but for newly split couple Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith). And in the midst of a tree-shopping excursion, the crestfallen duo (with some backup help from their fellow “Glee”-mates) sang Wham!’s 1984 classic “Last Christmas.” Michele and Monteith are hardly the first to cover the wistful pop song, but no artists could have ever put their own touch on it without its originators, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The English duo released “Last Christmas” as an A-side with “Everything She Wants” on Epic Records in December 1984. It would eventually appear on the pair’s third and final album, Music From the Edge of Heaven. George Michael may have been mending a broken heart with this song, but the release of “Last Christmas” (which he wrote) marked a banner year for the musician. Earlier in the year, Wham! released two other Billboard chart-toppers, “Careless Whisper” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” The song, which was released not soon after the Band Aid fundraiser smash “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (which also features Michael), has the dubious distinction of being one of the biggest songs in U.K. chart history that never actually reached #1. But it has proved to have staying power and currently ranks at #14 on the Billboard Holiday Songs list. “Last Christmas” has since shown up on several Christmas compilations (including All Time Greatest Christmas Songs and Now That’s What I Call Christmas!: The Signature Collection ) and is a radio go-to throughout the holiday season. So, it’s no surprise that other artists have jumped on the opportunity to cry, “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart/ But the very next day, you gave it away/ This year, to save me from tears/ I’ll give it to someone special.” Taylor Swift, Jimmy Eat World, Ashley Tisdale, Carrie Underwood, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Hilary Duff, Manic Street Preachers, Cascada, Whigfield, Billie Piper, Travis and Crazy Frog are just a select few of the notable names of those who left a note saying “I love you” and meant it. Now, the “Glee” cast is part of the ever-growing list, and as expected, it’s already spun some gold. The show’s Christmas album , which also features covers of other classics such as “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” “Jingle Bells” and “O Holy Night,” which is #10 on this week’s Billboard 200 and climbing to #4 on next week’s. Which was your favorite holiday song on this week’s “Glee”? Talk about it in the comments. Related Artists Wham!

Al Pacino, Joe Pesci May Join De Niro/Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’

Actors are reportedly considering roles in movie about mob assassin Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran. By Adam Rosenberg Al Pacino Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Robert De Niro is re-teaming with “Goodfellas” and “Casino” director Martin Scorsese for a project that is equal parts mob movie and Federico Fellini-inspired dream reality. Called “The Irishman” and based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses,” De Niro told MTV’s Josh Horowitz in April that some plans were cooking to perhaps divide the film into two parts. There’s been no additional news on that front, but the project is inching closer to reality with today’s possible casting news. Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are reportedly “circling” roles in “The Irishman,” according to a Deadline report. Scorsese is currently working on the 3-D film “Hugo Cabret,” starring Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Emily Mortimer and Ben Kingsley. “Irishman” is one of several possible projects he could move on to next. The book “I Heard You Paint Houses” focuses on the life of mob assassin Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, the supposed killer of Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Gallo. The movie’s script comes from Steve Zaillian, though De Niro told MTV in April that Eric Roth (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) is writing as well, for the potential two-film idea. In De Niro’s words: “We have a more ambitious idea, hopefully, to make it a two-part type of film or two films. It’s an idea that came about from Eric Roth to combine these movies using the footage from ‘Paint Houses’ to do another kind of a [film that is] reminiscent of a kind of ‘8 1/2,’ ‘La Dolce Vita,’ [a] certain kind of biographical, semi-biographical type of Hollywood movie — a director and the actor — based on things Marty and I have experienced and kind of overlapping them.” “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2” are works of the late, great Italian filmmaker, Federico Fellini. The latter film is a semi-autobiographical work about a director who is laboring over an elaborate sci-fi production. The story is peppered with flashbacks and dreamscapes that enter into the director’s present-day reality. MTV speculated in April that a similar plan could be in the works with Roth, particularly given the long history of mob films that Scorsese and De Niro have done together. Pacino and De Niro have teamed before, for Michael Mann’s “Heat” and Jon Avent’s “Righteous Kill.” Pesci and De Niro have worked together as well, with Scorsese, on the classics “Goodfellas,” “Casino” and “Raging Bull.” “The Irishman” would mark the first time the foursome have worked together in one movie. Michael Jackson’s Party Anthems: DJ Drama, Jermaine Dupri, More Reveal Their Favorites

‘Michael Jackson’s music can absolutely crush a party!’ Q-Tip tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Michael Jackson Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Friday (June 25) marks the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death . Fans across the globe are still heartbroken that the King of Pop is no longer with us, but this weekend, they will celebrate his memory by singing his songs and dancing to his music, just like Jackson wanted them to do while he was still here. We spoke to several DJs and asked them which of MJ’s songs are their favorites to play in the club. ” ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,’ ” Jermaine Dupri said Friday morning. “Because it embodies what clubs in the ’80s were really about, and you can hear it. For the three minutes you throw that on, you start believing you’re back there. At least I do.” “Probably ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),’ ” DJ Drama said via phone from India. “It gets all the drunk and hot girls excited!” ” ‘P.Y.T.,’ ” DJ Envy agreed. ” ‘Beat It,’ ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.’ ” Q-Tip, who became a legend in hip-hop for his abstract rhymes, had a few nonconventional choices. “Michael Jackson’s music can absolutely crush a party!” said Tip, who DJs all around the world. “The obvious records are ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ and ‘Rock With You.’ My personal faves are ‘Life of the Party,’ ‘Get on the Floor’ and ‘Body Language.’ Also, ‘Show Me the Way to Go.’ ” “My two favorites are ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ and ‘Billie Jean.’ They both are so timeless,” said DJ Kut, who spins on WBLS in New York. “They even make me wanna dance, and I don’t dance!” “Definitely one of my all-time favorites that can work at any party in the world is ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,’ ” Miami’s DJ Affect said. “The title explains it best. … That record is a party starter! Followed up by ‘Billie Jean,’ which always gets the ladies moving on any dance floor. To conclude the night around 4:55 a.m. in South Beach, ‘Dirty Diana’ is the perfect go-to record. MJ will truly be missed and never forgot.” Lil Jon went with the classics: ” ‘Billie Jean.’ Soon as the drums drop, people go nuts and they love to sing the hook! ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,’ I use the ‘ma ma say, ma ma sa’ part all the time to get the whole club crazy. ‘Rock With You,’ I drop the a cappella, and everyone is singing from thugs to nerds. Then I drop the beat and send the club into a frenzy!” “You can go to any club on the planet and hear ‘Billie Jean,’ ‘Beat It,’ ” said DJ Jazzy Jeff, who released the Jackson tribute mixtape He’s the King, I’m the DJ last year. “You can hear ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.’ Those are his main, main super staples; an Eskimo in Alaska knows those.” MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Don’t miss the one-hour special “Michael Jackson’s Influence on Music,” airing tonight at 6:30 p.m. on MTV. I had to go to Zone Six. Have I ever let you down?” Alley Boy gets the prize for wildest mixtape title this year (see above). The rapper said he wants to keep street rap in the spotlight. “I put that title on the mixtape because I wanted something to stand out,” Alley said. (Mission accomplished.) “Just to be different. The topics I went in on, it’s a lot of things people would call negative. My whole image, it seems it’s so negative. I went there with it. I feel that those words definitely represent my attitude. It’s so watered down in Atlanta right now. I wanted to let folks know I’m a force to be reckoned with. I wanted a strong concept and strong title.” He also has a story behind his MC name: “I’m from Zone Six. Edgewood’s finest,” he said. “The way I came up in these hallways, these cuts, these alleys, it just fit me.” Alley has a slew of guest spots holding it down for the A as well. “I wanted to go in with my boy [Young] Dro,” he said. “We got a song called ‘Tall.’ Yung L.A., we had some controversy goin’ on. Jermaine Dupri Remakes ‘Secret Garden’ With Usher, Trey Songz, Robin Thicke

JD keeps Barry White’s original verse on the Quincy Jones cover: ‘I had to leave him.’ By Shaheem Reid Jermaine Dupri Photo: MTV News DALLAS — It’s apparently the season to remake the classics. Mary J. Blige recently recorded a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and we all know about the remake of “We Are the World.” Now, Jermaine Dupri is spearheading a new version of a classic song, and just like “We Are the World,” it’s another Quincy Jones tune. JD has called on Usher, Robin Thicke, Tyrese and Trey Songz to cover Jones’ 1989 hit “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite).” The original version starred seductive vocalists James Ingram, Al B. Sure, El DeBarge and the incomparable Barry White. Right before the NBA All-Star Game, Dupri talked about his and his team’s rendition. “It took a minute for me to even think about touching it,” JD admitted. “It’s a couple of components in that record that you don’t wanna touch — Barry White being one of the main components. I had to leave him [on the song]. There’s nobody out there in the world that’s got a voice like his or even sounded the way he sounded. So I had to make sure I could leave that. It’s gonna be interesting for y’all to hear how these young guys sound mixed in with him.” In 1989, “Secret Garden” was one of the highlights of Quincy Jones’ Grammy-winning Back on the Block LP. Each vocalist had a verse and an opportunity to sing to the ladies. “Luckily, it’s a record that hip-hop really embraced as a ballad,” JD said. “It was a record I lived with so much. I kinda felt it was a record that was a part of my life. So it wasn’t that hard for me to get into it. But I just had to figure out all the ways and who to put on the song. I feel that at the time [Quincy] made the record, each one of the guys had a certain thing for the ladies.” Jermaine said his version will woo the females all over again. “I think Robin Thicke got something for the ladies,” Dupri said. “Usher, definitely. Trey, definitely. And Barry White. That was hard, because I wanted to put Anthony Hamilton on there, Maxwell on there. But it’s hard, because it’s only a four- or five-man [song]. That was the hardest part for me.” Jermaine said the “Secret Garden” remake will appear on a new Quincy Jones album; no release date has been announced.
