Mad Men Season Finale Review: Past vs. Future

A good season finale opens the chest of things you didn’t know you’d been thinking all season. Tonight’s Season 6 finale of Mad Men did just that. While this season seemed as glacial as Matthew Weiner’s storytelling can get, and the finale wasn’t particularly revelatory (though it wasn’t uneventful), it really clued us in to what this season – and in fact, the whole show – is driving at. It’s about past vs. future. The future is volatile. It’s as uncertain as anything can get. Don is so scared of it that fact, he sabotages everything just to maintain some control over it.  And the past, that pesky horrible flicker in the distant background, well it’s equally as disastrous, but in the end it’s just about the only thing we know for certain. Ignoring it only leads to more pain. In Care Of finds Don finally reaching the realization that if he doesn’t learn to restrain his self-destruction, his life will spiral. Don has been turning to drinking – and alone, no less – as a respite from his confused self-hatred. And finally, after ending up in the drunk tank for punching a minister, he decides “enough is enough.” Time to build a future. Of course, Don’s way of building a future is stealing it from someone else. He did it when he became Don Draper, and now he’s doing it with Stan Rizzo. Rizzo volunteers to be put on the Sunkist account in order that he can go to California and start a satellite agency, and when Don realizes he needs a shakeup, he figures that sounds like a good plan. Megan, of course, takes very little convincing. But when Ted tells Don that he wants to go to California himself, in order to escape his love for Peggy and keep his family together, it incites something profound. At first, Don says no. He’s sorry, but the gears are already in motion. Megan is being written off her show, plans are being made. But then, Don has a realization: Ted – this timid, scared man – is in danger of ruining his life. Like Don ruined his. During a pitch meeting with Hershey, Don reveals to the clients, and to his partners, some deeply locked away portions of his childhood that he’d never told anyone. He was raised in a whore house – not by a loving father like the version of himself in his pitch to Hershey – where nobody cared about him. The only sweetness in his life was the Hershey bar he earned from stealing money out of Johns’ wallets. This is not the first time Don has sabotaged a pitch meeting with his wild impulses, but it is the first time that he seems to have had a true catharsis doing it. Until this very moment, all of his erratic behavior has been destructive. It has been a way to influence the future – however negatively. Now, for the first time, he is embracing the past; dealing with his pain; confronting it, publicly. After Hershey leaves, he tells Ted he can have California. After all, Ted is trying to right his wrong. Not that he acted on his feelings for Peggy but that he has them in the first place. That’s a consideration Don never seems to have even realized existed. It’s big. And it hit Don hard. After an entire season of finding Ted to be an annoying pest that he could more or less walk all over, he now sees him as a man at a crossroads, and one that Don himself was on without even knowing it. So Don tells Megan that they’re not going to California after all. And of course Megan, who has always been just a piece of furniture unluckily positioned in Don’s blast radius, is justifiably upset. Final straws are being pulled. And just when Don has taken his first step toward finding himself. Megan leaves in a huff, possibly forever. And the next morning, Don shows up to work to find out he’s been unceremoniously canned. Another final straw has been pulled. So Don, without a wife or a job, has finally shed all the things that comprised his future. He has nothing left to destroy. Nobody to cheat on. No accounts to sabotage. Finally Don can work on his past. Sally, who told her father this season that she realized she knows nothing about him, is about to learn. The final scene of the season finds Don showing his three kids where he grew up. That he’s Dick Whitman. The secret that ruined his marriage with Betty, that threatened his job, that he has done countless horrible things to protect, is no longer a secret. It’s him. OTHER NOTES: It wouldn’t surprise me if Betty comes back into the picture next season. Weiner and his staff are great at making little things that seemed to just be scenery along the road turn out to be clues to major themes and plot details. The fact that Don and Betty had that nice little trip together as a family again, that they slept together again, compounded with Don’s embracing of his troubled past, suggests that him and Betty may get back together. Of course, it could also be a red herring. Poor Rizzo. Even when Don, who stole his idea, gives it away, he doesn’t even give it back to its rightful owner. He gives it to Ted. Peggy said something very poignant at the end of the episode. When Ted tells her she’ll realize he made the right decision, she tells him that it must be nice to be able to make decisions. Peggy has grown so much as a character, it’s tough to see her continue to be thrown around so much. SC&P is an entity without a spine now. Don is the entire reason the merger happened and the new business was created. He’s also the reason Sunkist won out over Ocean Spray. While he agreed to let Draper remain out of the new Name, Don really is the foundation of it. It will be very interesting to see what Don’s embracing of his past holds for his future. While he was told he could come back to work in a few months, that probably isn’t true. And for the sake of compelling storytelling, I hope it isn’t. The future is as uncertain as ever.

When The Checks Start Coming In: La Toya Jackson Takes Control Of MJ’s Kids Careers, Reality Show On OWN May Be Next For Jacko’s Seeds!

Cha ching! Jesus Toya takes the wheel! The latest chapter in the dysfunctional Jackson family saga is that “Celebrity Apprentice” alum La Toya Jackson has taken over the reigns as a talent manager for Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson… Via Page Six reports : La Toya Jackson was noticeably quiet when the Jackson family feud erupted in public last summer. But while her siblings battled executors over Michael Jackson’s $2 billion estate, and her niece Paris battled Aunt Janet in the driveway, estranged La Toya, 56, slyly moved in on the heirs to the fortune. She gathered Jacko’s three children and took sanctuary in the family’s Calabasas, Calif., mansion with Prince, 16, Paris, 15, and Blanket, 10. The get-togethers included “lots of ice cream and cookies,” said a family insider. “They needed comfort with everyone showing their wild side, so they watched television together, they listened to music and they talked about what Mike would want. Mostly, it was Toya doing all the talking.” Before long, the gold-digging diva had signed all three of his kids to her Ja-Tail Enterprises talent agency, which boasts no other clients. Prince recently signed with “Entertainment Tonight” through Ja-Tail to be a correspondent. La Toya, who has named her two poodles after Prince and Paris, stood with a watchful eye in the “ET” studios last week as Prince made his debut. La Toya also signed Prince to appear on the CW’s remake of “Beverly Hills 90210.” Paris inked a movie deal that will have her shooting later this year in London. The coup de grâce for La Toya, who gets a standard 15 percent commission on each deal, would be a reality TV show deal she’s negotiating. Insiders said bidding has approached $10 million. OWN, Oprah Winfrey’s network, is thought to be the front-runner to land the series that would feature Jacko’s children, La Toya and cameos by family matriarch Katherine. “Toya’s working it. It’s because [Katherine] can’t say no to her,” one person close to the family said. She was able to use the sympathy card because most of her siblings were legally barred from the mansion following the videotaped fight between Paris and her aunt Janet, the failed coup on Jacko’s will and the alleged kidnapping of Katherine. “She pounced while everyone else was making a lot of useless noise. It was her smoke screen, and she got it done,” the insider said. “She told them how she knew [Michael] better than anybody else, and she knew he’d want them to follow their dreams; and because they were his children, they could be media and entertainment moguls. “She had a blueprint. She sold it, and they bought it.” It was La Toya who prompted Paris to speak publicly for the first time at Jacko’s memorial, proclaiming him “the best daddy ever.” The speech ended with Paris in La Toya’s arms. The fifth of nine children, La Toya has long been considered as wacko as Jacko. She twice posed for Playboy, ran a psychic hot line, and publicly accused her famous brother of being a pedo. She accused patriarch Joseph Jackson of child abuse, and alleged her ex-husband, the late businessman Jack Gordon, tried to pimp her out for $100,000 to boxer Mike Tyson for a night. Since Jacko’s 2009 death, his big sister has claimed Jacko’s pet chimp Bubbles has spoken to her and that a psychic contacted the “Thriller” singer on her behalf. One potential hang up to the OWN deal is Paris’s refusal to do a reality show, but insiders caution not to underestimate Latoya’s power of persuasion. “Prince wasn’t exactly eager to do ET, but could you tell? When the money is on the line, Toya is going to cash in. I wouldn’t bet against her,” the insider said. Latoya also doesn’t have to worry about potential backlash from cousin T.J., who shares guardianship of the children with Katherine. “The guardianship really comes down to what [Katherine] will or won’t approve and TJ only steps in when [Katherine] can’t or refuses to make a decision,” a family member said. “Toya is smart, she has her mother eating out of her hand.” It was only a matter of time before the cash cows kids starting get milked for checks. Who mad at Toya for getting her %15? WENN

Dear Bossip: Before We Got Married He Agreed To Leave The Streets & Women Alone, And He Hasn’t

Dear Bossip , I am a 31-year old woman married with two kids. My husband is 37-years old, and we’ve been married for three and a half years, but we’ve been together for fifteen years. He is absolutely the love of my life. I’ve dated several men, but he is the only man whom I’ve ever given a title. He is a good provider, a loving and over protective dad. When we first met I was young and dumb and had no clue as to what I wanted or needed in a man. Now, that I’m 31, I want to take my life in a more spiritual direction, however he’s still stuck in the streets. Before we got married we agreed that he would leave the streets alone. He did a six year sentence and I was there for him the whole time. He didn’t fully appreciate this because I had a fling or two while he was locked up, but I kept it real with him.  I clearly spelled out what I did and didn’t want in our lives before we married and he agreed. We’ve been through a whole lot. My kids and I want for nothing. But this does come at a price. Infidelity has always been a problem in our relationship. It’s never been in my face. I’m noisy, so I’ve always been a snooper. I have never actually caught him in the act. He’s never burnt me. I mainly find suspect texts or calls from women. He’ll do good for a few months, or so, but just when I give him the benefit of the doubt something suspicious always pops up. All of the women go along with whatever story he comes up with or they say nothing at all. He does have female clients in his legal profession so it’s hard to differentiate the clients from the hoes. He makes me feel like I’m crazy and insecure. He straightens up for a while after I do something crazy or drastic. I can never get the truth out of him regarding these women (except when he was in jail). It drives me crazy and makes me act out of my character. His motto is “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.” He’s a heavy weed smoker and drinks a lil too much at times. He spends way too much time “working,” then tries to make me feel bad because he’s out providing for the family. I have a good job. I work full-time and I am a good mom. Recently, we had a domestic dispute (over a woman) initiated by me in a public place. He ended up getting arrested when a witness called the police. The crazy part is he didn’t get arrested for the dispute, but for something far more serious and now blames me. I feel emotionally drained and empty from this relationship. He’s not willing to go to counseling, and randomly goes to church. I’ve invested so much in this relationship and in my heart I don’t want to give it up. I’m torn to say the least. – Mrs. Emotional Roller Coaster Dear Mrs. Emotional Roller Coaster , Let’s see here, pulls out bull-ish calculator. Now, let’s add and get the square root that he’s a hustler (Who the hell is still doing this in 2012 going into 2013?) and it equals he’s a dumba** with no ambition. Let’s divide him getting locked up constantly, and then subtract that he’s a heavy weed smoker and drinks a lil too much (He probably getting high on his own supply! LOL!), and this equals a no street-smarts donkey. And, let’s multiply that he’s cheating and letting these hoes think they wifey, and this equals he’s a broke-a** wanna-be pimp. He needs to take several seats. What the hell are you doing with this damn fool? SMDH! Girl, the problem is that you went back on your word. You agreed that before you got married he would leave the streets alone. That didn’t happen. So now what? You spelled everything out what you did and did not want in your lives before marriage, and he agreed. That didn’t happen. So now what? He is not a man of his word. And, you are not a woman of your word. Neither of you have any integrity. Therefore you get what you got. Why would you expect anything to be different if neither of you were able to keep your word? Why would you expect for him to be a new man if he is not able to maintain his word? And, why would you expect for your life and world to be any different if you did not commit to your own word? I’ll wait while you ponder that. (Files nails and hums a cute little tune). Now pay attention to this important announcement. I don’t want you to get lost. I know I may go a little fast, so I’ll take this slow for you. You wrote, “He makes me feel like I’m crazy and insecure. He straightens up for a while after I do something crazy or drastic. I can never get the truth out of him regarding these women (except when he was in jail). It drives me crazy and makes me act out of my character.” And, then you wrote, “The crazy part is he didn’t get arrested for the dispute, but for something far more serious and now blames me.” You use the word “crazy” four times. You reference it when you say that he makes you crazy, he makes you feel like you’re crazy, and your situation is crazy. The definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Therefore, I pull out my bull-ish calculator and I deduce that YOU ARE CRAZY!  Ain’t nobody got time for all this madness. Get the hell out!!! Why are you putting up with all his BS!?! It’s not worth your sanity or well-being. He’s not impacting your children with any valuable lessons, other than it’s okay to cheat, lie, manipulate, and deceive others, and the ones you love. Oh yeah, he’s in and out of jail, he doesn’t attend church, therefore there’s no spiritual foundation, and he’s not a man of his word, so, therefore he has no integrity. And, I’m curious to know what his legal profession is if he is getting locked up? What professional job will let him keep coming back after he gets out of jail? Girl, he doesn’t and can’t have a real legal professional if he is drinking and smoking all the damn time. Where he work, McDonalds? Wal-Mart? Maintenance at the school? Mechanic at Jiffy Lube? Look, he’s still a little boy in a grown man’s body. I bet he’s running around with corn-rolls in his head, rocking throwback jerseys, and Timbs. He probably got rims on his car, and got his stereo turned up blasting Meek Mills, Jeezy, and Lil Boosie. SMDH! Ma’am, he’s trapped in a time warp trying to hold on to his youth, and you’re trying to get him to grow up and be a man. It ain’t going to happen. Men who run the streets are not husband material. They live and belong in the streets. He hasn’t and won’t mature. He’s trapped and mentally and emotionally thwarted, and he cannot let go of what should of, could of, would have been. It’s time to wake your a** up, and remember the commitment you gave to yourself, and the commitment you decided on when chose to get married. Those commitments are not what you have. I want you to be committed to empowering yourself. Be committed to being a great mom to your children. Be committed to leaving the streets and that environment. Be committed to a life filled with joy, happiness, peace, and love. Your life does not resemble any of what you were hoping you would get. You’re miserable, unhappy, stressed, and dealing with drama. Now, according to my math, if a+b+c does not equal a+b+c, and you’re getting x-y/x, then it’s time to redo your math.  Well, unless you went to Up The Street Public School. Ma’am, you cannot keep putting your children’s lives in danger because of the lifestyle your husband is committed to. Chile, you don’t know these streets like you think you do. One of his own boys can be plotting on him and may want to take him and you out. Hell, one of his customers or one of them ‘hoes’ may get the bright idea to get revenge and eliminate all of you. STOP PUTTING YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CHILDREN’S LIVES ON THE LINE BECAUSE OF HIM. It’s not worth it! And, you cannot keep sacrificing your sanity, and happiness for a man who is not committed to his marriage, or being a real man or father. He can’t commit to himself, therefore how in the hell can he commit to you and his children? His only commitment is to the streets, jail, and other women. Those are the only consistent things in his life. You are not a part of that equation. It’s time to leave! Save your coins, get you a house in the suburbs some place, get your kids settled into a new environment, and do it without him. Remain in church, keep getting spiritually fed, and nourish your soul. Trust and believe, after a year or two, and when you look back on your life with him, and you see how you’ve grown and he’s still doing the same thing from the time you met him, you’ll say to yourself, “What the hell was I thinking?” – Terrance Dean Hey Bossip Fam, what do you think? Jennifer Love Hewitt Is A Busty Erotic Masseuse

I haven’t watch Lifetimes’ “ The Client List “, but according to Wiki, Jennifer Love Hewitt plays a single mother who gives rub and tugs to help make ends meet. I don’t know if the show is any good because most of Jennifer’s TV shows get cancelled, but I wonder if her massages consist of finishing off her clients with a Russian happy ending. If you don’t know what that is, look it up. I’ll give you a hint, what’s big, soft and busting out of Jennifer’s dress?

Kush Chronic-les: Mary Jane Dealer Donates Proceeds To Hurricane Sandy Victims

Do you think this guy’s a good doer ?? According to The Huffington Post , he donated half of the proceeds made in two days to Hurricane Sandy victims: The dealer said he didn’t care about the implications of turning drug money into supplies for victims in the Rockaways, N.Y., some of whom are still without power. He just wanted to help out, and raised $700 for the cause. “Look, there are probably some people down there [in the Rockaways] who want some marijuana — but that’s not going to clothe and feed them,” he said. “So in order for me to help, I needed to turn what I do into something concrete that I could give to them.” The college-educated weed dealer said he saw the devastation in Breezy Point — where some 80 homes flooded and burned to the ground — and decided it was time to make some green for the victims. He alerted his clientele last Monday that he would be donating, and the calls started coming in. He’s no Pablo Escobar, but the dealer claims he did make $1,400 in those two days, amounting to $700 that will go toward hot meals, diapers, formula, clean water and other supplies that people on the Rockaway Peninsula still desperately need. HuffPost crime confirmed that he bought 50 wool blankets that will likely go to residents who are still without power. “Yes, I made a little extra money for myself those two days,” he told HuffPost Crime. “But [my clients] are getting something they’d already get anyway. I was going to work regardless, and now I felt like I was doing it with purpose … I’m not doing what I do in order to get rich or create some super marijuana empire. I’m trying to help, and this is my job.” Love or hate his source of revenue, you’ve got to give him credit for giving part of his ‘salary’ to charity. It’s a lot more than most have done! It’s About Damn Time: George Zimmerman Is Back In Florida To Turn Himself In

George Zimmerman To Turn Himself In George Zimmerman has returned to Florida and will turn himself in to authorities by Sunday’s deadline after a judge revoked his bond in the Trayvon Martin case, an attorney said. Attorney Mark O’Mara announced Zimmerman’s return on his website Sunday, saying Zimmerman arrived late Saturday evening. Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of the 17-year-old Martin, was ordered by a judge Friday to return to jail. The press release on the website said the deadline for his surrender is 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The judge revoked Zimmerman’s bond, suggesting he and his wife had not been honest about their finances. During a bond hearing in April, the couple had indicated they had limited funds. But prosecutors say Zimmerman had raised thousands through a website he had set up for his legal defense. Zimmerman’s legal team said Sunday that they will ask for a new bond hearing to address those concerns, and that they hope Zimmerman’s voluntary surrender will show he is not a flight risk. Furthermore, the money Zimmerman has raised is in an independent trust and cannot be directly accessed by Zimmerman or his attorneys, according to the press release. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge. He maintains he shot Martin in self-defense under Florida’s so-called “stand your ground” law because the teen, who was unarmed, was beating him up after confronting Zimmerman about following him in a gated community outside Orlando. Zimmerman’s credibility could become an issue at trial, legal experts said, noting the case hinges on jurors believing Zimmerman’s account of what happened the night in February that Martin was killed. Zimmerman was arrested 44 days after the killing, and during a bond hearing in April, his wife, Shellie, testified that the couple had limited funds available. Zimmerman took the stand at the hearing and apologized to Martin’s parents. Prosecutors pointed out in their motion that Zimmerman had $135,000 available then. It had been raised from donations through a website he had set up. They suggested more has been collected since and deposited in a bank account. Shellie Zimmerman was asked about the website at the hearing, but she said she didn’t know how much money had been raised. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set bail at $150,000. The 28-year-old was freed a few days later after posting $15,000 in cash — which is typical. Prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda complained Friday, “This court was led to believe they didn’t have a single penny. It was misleading and I don’t know what words to use other than it was a blatant lie.” The judge agreed and ordered Zimmerman returned to jail by Sunday afternoon. The defense countered that Zimmerman and his wife never used the money for anything, which indicated “there was no deceit.” The judge said he would schedule a hearing after Zimmerman is back in custody so he could explain himself. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Trayvon Martin’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, said his clients have always said Zimmerman should remain in jail until trial. Let’s hope this bastard gets locked up for good. Source
