The Humane Society of the United States released its findings this week from an 11-day undercover operation in October at the Willmar Poultry Company in Willmar, Minnesota. The hatchery, described on the company's website as the nation's largest, produces more than 30 million poults, or young turkeys, each year and delivers more than 600,000 a week to customers nationwide. A Humane Society investigator worked at the hatchery and shot video that appears to show employees cutting the toes off poults before tossing them down a chute to a bloody conveyor belt. The video, which is posted on the group's website, also shows an employee scooping up a handful of poults and tossing them into a bin, dropping some on the floor and leaving them there. The video also purports to show an employee pulling a cart of injured animals over to a grinder and throwing them in. “Our latest investigation exposes a callous disregard for animal welfare in the turkey industry, including practices such as grinding alive sick, injured and even healthy but unwanted turkeys,” said Wayne Pacelle, Humane Society of the United States president and CEO. “It's unacceptable for workers to leave injured and nonambulatory animals to suffer on the floor for hours on end, only to then send them to their deaths in a grinder.” Willmar Poultry Company President Richard VanderSpek defended the company's animal welfare practices and policies and said in a statement that the video depicted “the actions of some employees that violate the company's animal welfare policies.” “We condemn any mistreatment of the animals in our care and will take swift action to investigate and address these issues. Willmar Poultry will also review its policies, procedures, employee training and site monitoring to help ensure that our employees understand and follow company animal welfare policies and procedures,” VanderSpek said in a statement. VanderSpek said the company was committed “to meeting or exceeding” industry standards for animal welfare practices and policies, including the National Turkey Federation's Animal Care Guidelines. “The No. 1 priority for our turkey industry is to provide the safest, highest quality products possible. Gary Knowles, superintendent of Tasman Police Command, announced the deaths to the families. During the rescue attempt, air released from drilling into the mine contained high levels of carbon monoxide and methane but little oxygen, according to police officials. Authorities said the two camera-bearing military robots sent into the mine had found a worker's helmet with its light still on, but no sign of life. The helmet, police said, was dropped by one of the two miners who escaped the original explosion. Miners missing after explosion Map: New Zealand coal mine One of the robots had broken down earlier Tuesday but was back online, said Peter Whittall, CEO of Pike River Coal, which owns the mine. Whittall said a third robot was on its way to the site. One the units reached a “fresh air base” and found nobody there, he said. The 29 men, ages 17 to 62, had been missing since Friday, when an explosion ripped through the Greymouth mine. Most of the miners are from New Zealand, but the group also includes Scotlanders and South Africans. The missing men are believed to have been spread throughout the mine, with perhaps half trapped in one area. Whittall and Knowles reiterated that potentially explosive gases in the collapsed mine have rendered a rescue attempt unsafe so far. “It's just too dangerous. You can't put the lives of the guys going underground at risk,” Whittall said. Late Tuesday, officials showed family members and reporters a closed-circuit television video of the mine's entrance during Friday's blast. The minute-long video shows dust flying and a white screen flapping back and forth before it is blown out of the tunnel. The video “showed that the blast was quite large and went on for a long time,” Whittall said. He said that the “sobering” video showed a site at least 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) away from the blast. Another 329 people were injured in the crush, said Philip Bader, a news editor with the Phnom Penh Post, citing information given by Prime Minister Hun Sen in a televised address. Visalsok Nou, a Cambodian Embassy official in Washington, said more than 4 million people were attending the Water Festival when the stampede occurred. But other reports put the number at 2 million., said Steve Finch, a journalist with the Phnom Penh Post. The municipal police chief said that the stampede, which began around 10 p.m. (10 a.m. ET), likely occurred because a suspension bridge packed with people began to sway, creating panic, said Bader, who cited reports of people jumping from the bridge into the river below. Finch said police began firing water cannon onto a bridge to an island in the center of a river in an effort to get them to continue moving across the bridge. “That just caused complete and utter panic,” he told CNN in a telephone interview. He said a number of people lost consciousness and fell into the water; some may have been electrocuted, he said. Finch cited witnesses as saying that the bridge was festooned with electric lights, which may have played a role in the electrocutions. The government denied anyone was electrocuted. But a doctor who declined to be identified publicly said the main cause of death was suffocation and electrocution. Police were among the dead, Finch said. The anchor previewed CNN correspondent Atika Schubert's report on the pontiff's comments 10 minutes into the 9 am Eastern hour with her inaccurate description: “Well, the Catholic Church and condoms: two things that have never really gone together until now. The Pope, quoted in a new book, says condoms are okay sometimes. Now, that's a talker! ” After a commercial break, Phillips continued with another misleading statement: PHILLIPS: Pope Benedict is bending a bit when it comes to condoms. A new book actually quotes him as saying that they are okay to use in certain circumstances, like to prevent disease, not birth control. Fox News host warns that administration is preparing to exploit event to squelch resistance to airport security In little noticed comments made during an appearance on Judge Andrew Napolitano’s show on Fox News, Glenn Beck warned that the Obama administration wouldn’t hesitate to exploit a terror attack targeting airliners to blame the event on people protesting naked body scanners and TSA groping in airports. The Fox News host said that the government was deliberately provoking the American people to rise up so they could squelch the growing resistance with an iron fist, noting that Obama has failed to give a single speech addressing the TSA revolt even amidst the biggest holiday travel period of the year. “Let’s get people to rise up and say no scanners….something happens, the President then has the ability to finally give a speech on airport security and say ‘I was trying to protect you and these people stood up against these scanners, and these people died because of it….you have to stop listening, I’ll protect you,” said Beck, implying that the Obama administration would exploit a terror attack to blame it on those protesting against scanners and TSA groping in airports. Beck added that people in the Obama administration were probably having casual conversations surrounding the potential of a terror attack targeting airline travel along the lines of, “Gee, it wouldn’t be so bad, would it?” Beck made similar comments earlier this month when he suggested that the Obama administration was preparing to stage an event that would be blamed on opponents of big government. Discussing how leftists need violence to realize their political agenda, Beck featured a clip in which former Clintonite and Democrat operative Mark Penn said Obama needs an OKC bombing-style event to regain his popularity. “Remember, President Clinton reconnected through Oklahoma, right?” said Penn on Chris Matthews’ Hardball show. “And the president right now seems removed. It wasn’t until that speech [after the bombing] that [Clinton] really clicked with the American public. Obama needs a similar” defining moment, according to Penn. As we have documented, Penn is not the only prominent insider to invoke exploitation of terror as a means of reinvigorating the big government agenda. Back in July, former senior advisor to President Bill Clinton Robert Shapiro wrote in the Financial Times that only an OKC bombing or 9/11 style event could provide Obama with the opportunity to demonstrate that he is a strong leader. After reading a letter written by Tides CEO and founder Drummond Pike that encouraged advertisers to boycott Fox News in a thinly veiled threat that implied Beck’s rhetoric is leading to another OKC bombing, Beck stated, “They are setting up an Oklahoma City, they are claiming that one is coming and they’re already marked the one who caused it,” referring to himself. CNN host Larry King channeled the left's frustration with the Obama administration on Thursday's Larry King Live as he questioned Vice President Joe Biden about their approach on overturning the military's “don't ask, don't tell” policy: ” You were against it, as I understand? So why is this our policy? ” King had Mr. Biden on as his sole guest during the first half hour of his program, and brought on Second Lady Jill Biden to join her husband for the remainder of the program. The host raised the controversial issue immediately before Mrs. Biden came on, and besides noting how “most of the administration” is against the policy, he stated that ” apparently, they polled troops- they're against it, and you poll America- they're against it .” On October 29, 2010, The Washington Post cited unnamed “multiple people familiar with the findings” of a Defense Department survey of active-duty and reserve military, which apparently found that “a majority of active-duty and reserve service members…would not object to serving and living alongside openly gay troops,” but the actual results would not be available until December 1, when a “Pentagon report…regarding how the military would end enforcement of the “don't ask, don't tell” law” is released. Referring to the censure of Sen. After playing clips from Ramirez and his opponent during the student election, who is also the president of the Fresno State College Republicans, the CNN host displayed sympathy for the college student: “This is kind of a classic though, isn't it, really? Ancient Roman landscape unearthed near London By the CNN Wire Staff November 18, 2010 10:37 a.m. EST London, England (CNN) — Archaeologists have uncovered an ancient Roman landscape beneath a park in west London, with a Roman road, evidence of a settlement, and unusual burials among the finds. They say the discovery — at the site of a planned luxury hotel near the edge of the River Thames — gives valuable and rare insight into the daily life of what was then an agricultural village. Dating back nearly 2,000 years, the village would have supplied the ancient Roman city of Londinium and also given shelter to passing travelers. “It helps us build a picture of the Roman landscape and shows how the busy metropolis of Londinium connected with the rest of Roman Britain,” said Jo Lyon, a senior archaeologist at the Museum of London Archaeology, which carried out the excavations. The site is in Syon Park, owned by the Duke of Northumberland and located across the river from Kew Gardens. Waldorf Astoria is building a luxury hotel on the grounds that is set to open early next year. The Museum of London made the discovery while doing excavations in August 2008 ahead of the hotel's construction. Everything was found under just half a meter (1.5 feet) of soil, and the finds were kept secret until the fieldwork was finished. Some of the finds will be displayed at the hotel, Waldorf Astoria said. The site revealed a section of one of Roman Britain's most important roads, linking Londinium with the Roman town of Silchester, which lies farther west. “That's one of the key national roads, (a) very, very busy road, and we don't really find fragments of the actual roads themselves very often in London,” Lyon said. The dig also revealed evidence of a rural settlement and an ancient tributary of the Thames. Thousands of Roman artifacts were recovered from the site, including two shale armlets and fragments of a lava quern stone, used for grinding grains. Archaeologists also found a fragment of an “exceptional” Late Bronze Age (1000-700 BC) gold bracelet that probably predated the site, as well as hundreds of coins. “All of the coins came from the Roman road,” she said. “That road was in use for 400 years across the Roman period, and people have just dropped coins over those hundreds of years.” One of them is a coin made of copper alloy that features a V, which Lyon said could refer to Vespasian, who was Roman emperor between 69 and 79 AD. There were also the skeletons of those who may have been former occupants of the settlement. They were found unusually buried in ditches, lying on their sides without any grave goods, which the museum said was “particularly curious” and in need of more research. Lyon said she initially thought they were Iron Age burials because the style was so “casual.” It could be that the method was a local one adopted by the Romans who lived there, she said. The dig also showed that the British landscape changed considerably under Roman influence, with the establishment of towns connected by roads, the museum said. Londinium, the ancient name of London, was founded in 48 AD on an uninhabited site, and its strategic position on the Thames helped it rapidly become the most important and largest commercial town in the province. The site on Syon Park would have been an attractive place for a settlement because it lay between the road and the Thames, the museum said.
