Undercover Video Shows Alleged Abuse at Egg Farm | Farm Had Eggs on Top of Corpses | Video

Humane Society: Undercover video shows alleged abuse at egg farm From Eric Fiegel, CNN Senior Producer November 17, 2010 7:48 p.m. EST The Humane Society says its undercover video shows a dead bird as eggs roll by inches away on a conveyer belt. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * The Humane Society releases a video it says shows animal abuse at an egg farm * The undercover video was shot at a Texas farm * The company, Cal-Maine, says it has been a leader in animal welfare * Cal-Maine is the largest egg producer in the United States – Washington (CNN) — A group that protects the welfare of animals has released an undercover video it claims shows animal abuse at a Texas farm operated by the largest egg producer in the United States. The Humane Society of the United States says one of its investigators worked at the Cal-Maine farm in Waelder, Texas, for almost a month this fall and documented multiple abuses and food-safety violations. The video shows dead birds, birds stuck in their cages, overcrowding and what appears to be hens covered in feces. At one point the video shows a dead bird as eggs roll by just inches away on a conveyer belt. The short, edited video was shown at a news conference on Wednesday by the Humane Society's president and CEO, Wayne Pacelle. “Our latest farm animal investigation documents inhumane treatment of laying hens and conditions that threaten food safety,” Pacelle said from the group's headquarters in Washington. Pacell told reporters that Cal-Maine, based in Jackson, Mississippi, was unaware of the investigation and that the video was being made public for the first time. Pacell said he didn't know if the giant egg company had seen the video. 'Farm had eggs on top of corpses' Cal-Maine responded to the allegations with a statement on its website. “Cal-Maine Foods has been a leader in accepting and implementing animal welfare measures. All of the Company's facilities are operated in full compliance with existing environmental, health and safety laws and regulations and permits. Each employee involved in the care and handling of our hens is required to review, sign and comply with our Company code of conduct regarding the ethical treatment of hens which requires employees to report any possible violations,” the statement said. The egg industry has taken a beating of late. Just this summer over half a billion eggs were recalled after a salmonella outbreak was traced to an Iowa farm. Cal-Maine is no stranger to recalls. It recalled 288,000 eggs earlier this month when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed the company that eggs from one of its Ohio plants tested positive for Salmonella enteritidis. Salmonella, which is generally contracted from contaminated poultry, meat, eggs, or water, affects the intestinal tract. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, chickens can pass the bacteria to eggs because the eggs leave hens through the same passageway as feces. Alternatively, bacteria in the hen's ovary or oviduct can get to the egg before the shell forms around it, FSIS said. Cal-Maine says it sold over 778 million eggs in 2009, which represents 18 percent of the United States market. According to the companies website, “Cal-Maine has an industry-leading record in food safety with all of its 35 processing plants independently verified as reaching the highest level of safety by the Safe Quality Food Institute.” Over 70 billion eggs are produced a year in the United States, and the Humane Society would like to see the large egg farms change their ways “Time and again, we've found that these massive facilities caging hundreds of thousands of animals do not properly care for the birds … It's time for the egg industry to embrace cage-free housing systems and move away from battery cage confinement methods,” Pacelle said. Battery cage systems allow many birds to be housed in one facility but critics claim it's dangerous and cruel to the animals. The Humane Society would like to see cage-free housing but so far only 5 percent of eggs produced in the U.S. use this method, according to Pacelle. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration implemented new rules in July for large egg producers. These mandates include cleaning poultry houses that test positive for salmonella, rodent control, refrigeration of eggs during storage and transportation and buying chicks and young hens only from suppliers who monitor for Salmonella bacteria. The USDA says that as many as 79,000 illnesses and 30 deaths due to consumption of eggs contaminated with the bacterium Salmonella enteritidis may be avoided each year with these new measures in place. added by: EthicalVegan

Mel Gibson Wants Sole Custody of Daughter

After watching Oksana Grigorieva on Larry King last night, Mel Gibson didn’t issue any sort of rebuttal. Rather, he sought sole custody of their daughter, Lucia. The actor’s lawyers will appear in court to ask the judge in his custody war to award him sole custody of baby Lucia in response to Oksana’s sitdown on CNN. Team Mel alleges that Oksana’s false and derogatory statements to the media show she is not acting in the best interests of Lucia and should cost her custody. MEL VS. OKSANA : With new barbs traded every day, this is one of the ugliest custody feuds we’ve ever seen, and the scary thing is that it’s only beginning . In addition to attempting to take custody from Oksana Grigorieva, Mel’s lawyers will ask Judge Scott Gordon to award her visitation, but only with a monitor.

CNN’s Bash: Was Editing Tina Fey Mocking Conservative Women First Time PBS Favored Republicans?

CNN's Dana Bash asked a great question on Tuesday: were Tina Fey's disgusting remarks about conservative women at the Mark Twain Awards “the first time that PBS has been accused of editing to favor Republicans?” Almost as telling, CNN's Gloria Borger appearing with Bash on “John King USA” answered, “They edited out something Paul McCartney said that was offensive at one point to Republicans, so probably not” (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Heartbreaking: Afghanistan War Hero Dog Accidentally Euthanized in Arizona Today | Her Puppies Are Safe (?) in the U.S.

November 15th, 2010 06:44 PM ET Afghanistan dog hero accidentally euthanized A dog rescued from Afghanistan after she alerted soldiers to a suicide bomber was accidentally euthanized at an Arizona shelter on Monday. A Pinal County Animal Care and Control employee has been placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures and euthanizing the wrong dog. The dog, Target, was recently brought over from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty. Target was featured by CNN for heroism after saving dozens of soldiers from a suicide bomber on February 11. “She got her name because the Afghans we lived with were constantly trying to off her. She's been shot in the leg. … The Afghans actually ran over her,” Sgt. Christopher Duke said, who helped care for Target in Afghanistan and has adopted her packmate Rufus. “There's no killing this dog for sure. She's pretty much been through it all, ” he said upon their reunion in July in Georgia. Target's new owner, Army Sgt. Terry Young whose life was saved by the stray, helped bring the 2-ish-year-old from Afghanistan to her new home in Arizona. She disappeared from Young's home on Friday. Facebook postings requested help in finding her. Target saved U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan Animal Care and Control received a call about a stray female shepherd-mix dog in the San Tan Valley area on Friday. An animal control officer picked up the dog and brought her to the shelter where the dog stayed over the weekend. The dog was not microchipped or licensed with the county, shelter officials said. On Monday morning, the employee mistakenly took the dog out of its pen and euthanized it. The dog was not scheduled for euthanasia. “I am heartsick over this. I had to personally deliver the news to the dog’s owner, and he and his family are understandably distraught,” said Animal Care and Control Director Ruth Stalter. “We work hard get to strays reunited with their owners. When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow. Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.” In an e-mail, Young told CNN affiliate KPHO, “I'm an absolute wreck today, and it's everything in my power to hold it together for me and my family. My 4-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet.” “An investigation is under way, and we will cooperate fully. We will also thoroughly review procedures to ensure that something like this does not happen again,” Stalter said. “This is unacceptable, and no family should be deprived of their companion because procedures were not followed.” Target was pregnant when she helped thwart the suicide bomber by attacking him. She had her litter of puppies in Afghanistan. Target's puppies have since been brought to the United States. added by: EthicalVegan

John King Bashes Obama for Calling Fox ‘Destructive’ and MSNBC ‘Invaluable’

CNN’s John King on Wednesday mocked Barack Obama for calling Fox News a “destructive” force in our society while at practically the same time a White House spokesman was saying MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow provide “an invaluable service” to the country. As NewsBusters reported Tuesday, the President bashed FNC in a just-published interview with Rolling Stone magazine shortly before his Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton was praising MSNBC during a gaggle held on Air Force One. With this in mind, on Wednesday’s “John King USA,” the host surprisingly derided the White House’s inconsistency (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):  JOHN KING, HOST: Sometimes you feel sad to be left out of a big debate. This is not one of those sometimes. In an interview with “Rolling Stone,” President Obama voiced the opinion that Fox News is a “destructive” force in our society. On the other hand, the left hand in this case, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the President believes MSNBC commentators Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow provide “an invaluable service” to that same society and democracy. So, according to the President this is “destructive.” King then played clips from “The Glenn Beck Show” and “Hannity.” After they concluded, King said, “And, according to the White House, this is ‘an invaluable service.'” He then showed clips from “The Ed Show” and “Countdown.” After getting some opinions from his panel, he turned to CNN contributor Gloria Borger and asked, “What happened to this? This is the President of the United States, it’s May 1st, it’s the University of Michigan, he’s giving the commencement speech, and Professor Obama is trying to tell Americans of all political persuasions, ‘Listen to each other.'” BARACK OBAMA: For if we choose only to expose ourselves to opinions and viewpoints that are in line with our own, studies suggest that we become more polarized, more set in our ways. After the clip ended, King said to his guests, “I think he’s right. In that commencement speech, he’s right.” Indeed, but as NewsBusters reported at the time, Obama didn’t mean those words. Quite the contrary, what has come out of this White House in the past week is exactly how he feels, and that commencement address in May was just another in a never ending litany of campaign speeches Americans should take with a grain of salt. Somewhat surprisingly, King not only seems to be feeling that way, but he’s also willing to point out the hypocrisy on the air. Bravo, John. Bravo.

Bozell Denounces O’Keefe’s ‘Ugly, Dishonest and Filthy’ Stunt

The following is NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center (MRC) founder Brent Bozell’s statement regarding news of James O’Keefe’s sting operation attempt to embarrass CNN. The MRC unequivocally denounces James O’Keefe for his attempted assault on CNN. It isn’t just childish and immature; it’s ugly, dishonest and filthy. There is no place in the conservative movement for this type of behavior and that’s exactly what I warned about in a commentary piece I submitted to CNN.com just two days ago. “Could the Citizen Journalist abuse the public trust?” I wrote in this piece that should run in the next few days. “Hypothetically, of course. Conservatives must all guard against this. Let there be scrutiny, by all means.” And I repeat: there must be scrutiny. Bottom line: We want nothing to do with O’Keefe or his dirty antics.

Deaf sex abuse victim suing the pope

Deaf victim of sex abuse is suing pope, and going public with his story for the first time Editor’s note: A one-hour CNN special, “What the Pope Knew,” will air Sept. 25 and Sept. 26, 8pm and 11pm ET. This story is drawn from that exclusive report. By Scott Bronstein CNN Special Investigations Unit MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – Terry Kohut has kept a dark secret for nearly 50 years. Now he is breaking his silence, becoming a key figure in the sex-abuse crisis in the Catholic Church and the growing controversy over what Pope Benedict XVI did about it. When Kohut was barely a teen, and for years afterward, he says, he was sexually molested and assaulted by the headmaster and priest of the school where he lived, St. John’s School for the Deaf, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What occurred there is one of the most notorious cases of sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Kohut was not alone. From 1950 to 1974 the headmaster of St. Johns, Father Lawrence C. Murphy, raped and molested as many as 200 deaf boys, according to court and church documents. Kohut has now filed the first sex-abuse lawsuit against the Vatican actually naming Pope Benedict, previously known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as a defendant. Ratzinger was once head of the Vatican’s powerful CDF, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, charged in certain circumstances with investigating the sexual abuse of minors by priests. And though church records show the abuse by Father Murphy was brought to the attention of Ratzinger and the CDF years ago, a church trial against the headmaster was stopped and he was allowed to remain a priest. The Vatican’s “policy of secrecy” in abuse cases, and its “directives to conceal the sexual abuse of children” by priests, the lawsuit says, helped bring about the abuse of Kohut and others by Father Murphy. Kohut has never before gone public or spoken about what Father Murphy did to him. He has remained anonymous in the suit, listed only as “John Doe 16,” one of dozens of men alleging abuse. In an exclusive interview with CNN, Kohut, 60, spoke with his hands and through an interpreter, describing how the abuse by Father Murphy started. “I went into his office, the door was closed,” he said. “And Father Murphy said, ‘Take your pants down. And so I did… you know, he was always in his black attire with a white collar, and you know … I was questioning why he would ask me to do that. Here he is, a priest, and – I have to obey him. And he proceeded to touch me.” more after the jump… added by: SageRockandRoll

Likely Voters Steer Clear of MSNBC, Don’t Like or Don’t Know Prime Time Talkers

According to a recent poll, likely voters get their political news primarily from cable television. Among cable channels, 42 percent, a plurality, watch Fox News for its political coverage. Only 12 percent said they watched MSNBC. What’s more, most likely voters don’t like or have never heard of MSNBC’s prime time talent. The poll , conducted by Politico and George Washington University, used a sample split evenly between political parties – even slightly favoring Democrats in some areas : 41 percent of respondents identified as Republicans, while 42 percent said they were Democrats. Forty-four percent said they usually vote for Republicans, while 46 percent answered Democrats. Forty-eight percent voted for Obama, while only 45 percent voted for McCain. Even among this group, Fox News is by far the most popular cable outlet. CNN comes in at second, with 30 percent. A sorry MSNBC brings up the rear. Among cable news personalities, FNC’s Bill O’Reilly – consistently the highest-rated cable news talker – is the most popular. Forty-nine percent of respondents said they thought O’Reilly has a positive impact on the American political conversation. Thirty-two percent said he has a negative impact. Interestingly, respondents – again, split evenly among the two parties – thought all three of Fox’s evening opinion commentators (O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity) have a net positive impact on the national debate. All three have a positive spread in the category. Also of note, for none of the three did majorities answer “never heard of”. MSNBC’s hosts are a different story. Only 23 percent said Keith Olbermann has a positive impact on the debate, while 25 said he has a negative one. A plurality, 42 percent, had never heard of him But at least it was only a plurality. Majorities said they have never heard of Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow – 70 percent and 55 percent, respectively. The positive impact/negative impact responses were split down the middle for both. In other words, the vast majority of likely voters either do not like MSNBC’s prime time talkers, or have never heard of them (with the notable exception of Chris Matthews, whose name was not included in the poll). “How did it get to this state?” wonders Ed Morrissey . After all, NBC had a long history in television news, starting decades before CNN and even longer than Fox. Its partnership with Microsoft should have given the cable news network a distinct advantage in the New Media world. Their roster of news anchors, present and future, should have immediately challenged CNN for primacy and marginalized Fox, who may have had cash but relatively fewer newsgathering resources in the US when it launched. Under the direction of GE’s Jeff Immelt, though, NBC’s cable network went for the full-insane demographic. Fox took CNN’s talking-head format and simply reversed the bias, although Fox rightly argues that it presents more opposing viewpoints than CNN did as part of their establishment talent and not just occasional guests and party spinmeisters. NBC decided to emulate Air America with its cable lineup instead, perhaps seeing some opportunity in the last Bush term to capitalize on his unpopularity and become a center of opposition opinion. Rather than accomplish that, the decision by NBC and its parent GE has not just destroyed MSNBC’s credibility but also NBC’s as well. With the exception of Joe Scarborough, who is hard to pigeonhole but certainly isn’t a hard-Left hysteric, the entire lineup is exactly what one would find on the failed libtalker radio network. It’s no coincidence that two of its featured hosts come straight out of Air America, Rachel Maddow and Ed Schultz. Maddow has, at least, produced a watchable show, albeit with a hard-Left tilt that clearly is out of touch with the mainstream, but Schultz is barely coherent. Top that off with a daily “news” broadcast from Keith Olbermann that almost literally consists of a Two Minute Hate (Olbermann’s WPIW lists), and it’s a recipe for the kind of disaster that only political hacks could love. The wonder is that GE and NBC apparently seem content to alienate 88% of the viewing audience with its trainwreck theater.

CNN’s Chetry, Newsweek’s Miller Agree: ‘Mama Grizzlies’ Phenomenon Misleading Because Candidates Largely Oppose Liberal Policies

Are “Mama Grizzlies” who oppose state children’s health insurance programs (S-CHIP) and teachers’ unions unfaithful to their maternal name? CNN anchor Kiran Chetry joined Newsweek’s Lisa Miller Monday in wondering if that is so. Miller appeared on CNN’s “American Morning” to feature her most recent piec e on “Mama Grizzlies,” prominent female conservatives in the vein of Sarah Palin. “All the candidates that we – whose records we looked at, are against the Obama health plan in general, and yes, the CHIP program in specific,” reported Miller, a senior editor for Newsweek. “There are rising numbers of poor children in this country, a quarter of America’s children are poor. It seems like a funny way to say that you’re for kids, and be against all of these programs.” Miller ultimately concluded that the “Mama Grizzlies” movement will fall short of its political goals, because “the issues facing the country are complex, and bears are not.” “Do we really want bears to solve our problems?” Miller quipped at the end of the segment.   Kiran Chetry agreed that the candidates’ positions may contradict their maternal title. “I guess if you strip away the core message of the Tea Party candidates, which Sarah Palin has really helped endorse, they just want less government, they want less spending. That, unfortunately at times, butts up against things that many say would be good for kids.” Among the examples of “Mama Grizzlies” failing to help America’s children? Both Miller and Chetry noted the candidates’ opposition to S-CHIP programs, teachers’ unions, Pell Grants, and Obamacare as evidence. Nevada Republican Senate nominee Sharron Angle’s opposition to a domestic violence bill in the Nevada state legislature and Minnesota Republican Rep. Michelle Bachmann’s vote against a federal parental-leave policy drew some attention as well. So who on the Democratic side would make a good “Mama Grizzly?” Miller said Hillary Clinton would, being a “powerful woman and a mom,” although she wouldn’t admit it. A partial transcript of the segment, which aired on September 27 at 8:14 a.m. EDT, is as follows: KIRAN CHETRY: It’s interesting, because when you take a look at some of the candidates she’s referring to, and we can talk about some of them, they aren’t necessarily all on the same page with each other when it comes to some of these issues. I mean, is this sort of a coherent set of ideas, or is it more of a marketing tool? LISA MILLER, Senior Editor, Newsweek: Right, well, I mean, I would say – and we say at the end of the story that it is really more of a marketing tool. It’s a very compelling image, right? Everybody who’s a parent has that feeling of wanting to protect their kids. And if we make it America’s kids, or our kids, you know, our future, it’s a very powerful image. On the other hand, you know, Christine O’Donnell for example isn’t a mom. So she talks about our grandchildren in speeches, but she’s not actually a “Mama Grizzly.” And then on things like education, the “Grizzlies” are really all over the place. You know, Sarah Palin is actually quite progressive on education. She has always talked about paying teachers more. In Alaska, she ramped up the budget for the Department of Education over and over again before she left the position of Governor of Alaska. She promised a big infusion of money to the schools. Whereas Angle and Bachmann are known for sort of hating the teachers’ unions, fighting back against lobbyists. All of them, many of them, have this anti-Department of Education position, you know, parents know what’s good for kids, and administrators and bureaucrats should get out. CHETRY: Right, but just because you’re against the Department of Ed doesn’t mean you’re not for kids getting a better education. MILLER: I guess that’s true. On the other hand, you know, a lot of them have voted for – against things like Start, programs for poor kids, Pell Grants, which are to help, you know, poor kids get college education – CHETRY: Right, and this is the interesting part. Because, I mean, I guess if you strip away the core message of the Tea Party candidates, which Sarah Palin has really helped endorse, is they just want less government, they want less spending. That, unfortunately at times, butts up against things that many say would be good for kids. We have Bachmann, Michelle Bachmann in the Congress, and Nickie Haley who are both against the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, that provides health care to poor children. MILLER: All the candidates that we – whose records we looked at, are against the Obama health plan in general, and yes, the CHIP program in specific. There are rising numbers of poor children in this country, a quarter of America’s children are poor. It seems like a funny way to say that you’re for kids, and be against all of these programs.   CHETRY: Yeah, the other issue that you talked about is the voting against – was it Angle who voted against a Domestic Violence bill in the Nevada legislature? MILLER: Yes, and Bachmann voted against a federal parental-leave policy for federal employees. So when you have a new baby, time off. That seems like a good thing for kids. CHETRY: Is there a Democratic equivalent to the “Mama Grizzly” phenomenon on the other side? MILLER: Well, I mean, I think, you know, you could call Hillary Clinton a “Mama Grizzly,” right? She’s a powerful woman, she’s a mom. But I don’t think she would ever call herself a “Mama Grizzly.” She doesn’t fit in to this demographic. CHETRY: You wrote in an interesting line at the end of the article that said in the wild, real “Mama Grizzlies” are known to be aggressive, irrational, and mean. The issues facing the country are complex, and bears are not. So what is the upshot of this? MILLER: Well, I mean, I think, you know, it’s a great marketing tool, as we said at the outset. You know, calling upon women’s primal maternal instincts is a good thing, but let’s think about it. I mean, this is a very divided country, and we have some big problems to solve. Do we really want bears to solve our problems?
