I’m gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there,” Bieber revealed. Aside from writing for Bieber, Cruz said that in 2011 he hopes to have a few more radio hits of his own after an impressive 2010. “I would say next year, just more good songs. Hopefully the fans (and new fans) enjoy the music as much as they are currently,” he said. “I’ve been working with so many amazing people — David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia — and producing more stuff myself, as well. John Legend, The Roots Talk ‘Powerful’ Wake Up! LP

‘He really, really exercised … the rawness,’ drummer ?uestlove says of pushing soul singer on upcoming joint collection. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts John Legend and ?uestlove Photo: MTV News John Legend and the Roots hooking up for a collaborative project hardly seems like a stretch. For one, the two acts have past works steeped in soul music, from John’s solo efforts to the band’s work with artists like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo. But according to Legend, their new album, Wake Up!, was anything but a gimme. The LP is a collection of vintage cover tracks with a few contemporary edits, and the singer admitted the studio sessions forced him, in a pivotal way, to stretch beyond his comfort zone. “I think this album is bold and it’s different than anything that I’ve done but I don’t think people will think it’s out of my sphere of what I do, because it’s very soulful,” Legend told MTV News. “It incorporates gospel, it incorporates hip-hop, funk, reggae; it’s very classic. It’s inspired by music from the ’60s and ’70s, all these are things you would expect me to do. And all these are things you would think the Roots are a phenomenal band and production team to do it with, and so it works really well in that regard. I think it will feel very powerful to Roots fans, John Legend fans, and all of the above people who haven’t listened to us before, because the collaboration felt very natural, it felt very right.” Although both John Legend and the Roots share a connection that stems from their Philadelphia backgrounds — the singer attended college in the area and the bandmembers hail from the city — joining forces wasn’t a simple process. Roots drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson said he’s selective about who he works with, limiting the list to a few veterans. But Legend, he said, shares a common palette when it comes to musical tastes. “As far as doing a full-fledged record with a singer, a lot of times I shy away from singers because a lot of them don’t have the seasoning and the reference points that I look for when I do work with particular singers,” ?uestlove explained, citing his ’70s-era soul music influences. “So it was fun working with John,” he added. “John is a double-edged sword: He has a velvety smooth voice, but here, he really, really exercised — much to my delight and much to his chagrin — the rawness.” What do you think of John Legend and the Roots coming together for an album? Young Money’s Shanell Says Street Single Is For ‘Boss’ Chicks

‘The way I write my love songs comes out different,’ R&B upstart says of penning Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Cupid’s Got a Gun.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Shanell Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images Young Money’s Shanell has a voice as sweet as Red Velvet cake, but the singer/songwriter isn’t your average R&B pop tart. On her new single “Cupid’s Got a Gun” featuring Nicki Minaj, she’s as sharp with her lyrics as her boss Lil Wayne is with his rhymes. Shanell says the song represents the “tough skin” type of girls. “Me and my homegirl Mika Means were actually in the studio and we were coming up with stuff and we started that song, “Cupid’s Got a Gun,” Shanell told MTV News this week. “It’s a love song, but it’s a love song told in a different way. I’m not really a mushy person, so I express my emotions, it’s like, instead of saying I love you, it’s I f—ing love you. So the way I write my love songs comes out different. And it’s this energy that I felt that it needed, ’cause I consider myself a boss type of chick and I got a tough skin. I thought Nicki would be perfect to be on this record to exemplify that boss type of energy. I played it for her and she jumped right on it.” The song is the first effort from her forthcoming debut album. According to Shanell, “Cupid’s Got a Gun” wasn’t slated to be the first single but after it leaked to the Web earlier this month it drew a strong response. As a result, she and her team are prepping to work the song as a street single to tease the upcoming LP. She hopes to drop that full-length for the masses next summer. Meanwhile, she has her hand in other projects like her gig as the face clothing line Married to the Mob’s fall collection. The singer has also written a video treatment for “Cupid’s” that she described as a combination of “Smooth Criminal” and the movies “Sin City” and “Kill Bill.” “As a writer, there’s a picture in my head and I’m basically writing a story to the pictures that flash in my head,” Shanell explained. “So I always had the visual for the video in my head. But once we got Nicki on it, I thought, Oh, [those three as a mix would work]. I’ve written it out and I’m looking for a director now.” Are you looking forward to seeing the collaboration from Young Money’s first ladies? Tell us in the comments! 2010 VMAs: Lady Gaga Scores, Taylor Swift And Kanye West Vent

Performances from Justin Bieber, Eminem/Rihanna and others also steal the show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With 13 nominations, there was no way Lady Gaga was going home empty-handed at Sunday night’s (September 12) MTV Video Music Awards . And when the international pop/fashion icon stepped up to accept her sixth award of the night, for Video of the Year, she did what she always does: broke off a piece for her legion of fans by teasing the name of her upcoming album. On a night when Kanye West seemingly came all the way back from music jail with yet another eye-popping performance that put most (or at least some) of last year’s stage-crashing antics to rest, Taylor Swift appeared to answer Kanye’s bum-rush with some lyrical barbs of her own, and everyone from Justin Bieber and B.o.B to Drake and Nicki Minaj made their VMA debuts. In the end, though, the night belonged to Mother Monster. Gaga got the night started early with a pre-show win for Best Dance Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration for “Telephone” with Beyonc

Lady Gaga’s Entrance Dominates VMA Twitter Tracker

‘What the hell is Lady Gaga wearing? Oh my gosh. I love her,’ tweets one fan during pre-show. By Terri Schwartz Lady Gaga arrives at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Not surprisingly, the celebrity to make the biggest splash during the pre-show of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards was Lady Gaga. Thanks to Twitter, fans got wind of Gaga’s newest amazing outfit before she even chatted with Sway on the white carpet. The fact that she’s already won two Moonmen helped her consistently stay in the top four of MTV’s Twitter Tracker as well. “What the hell is Lady Gaga wearing? Oh my gosh. I love her. XD” hannahtastic tweeted about Gaga’s Alexander McQueen outfit, which she got from his last collection. The dress is a sweeping red and gold ball gown with a gold feather headdress. Gaga wasn’t willing to tell Sway how many wardrobe changes she had planned for the night, but it didn’t stop itsTaylerLuis from tweeting, “Gaga you are stunning.” The response to Gaga first two wins , Best Dance Music Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration Video with Beyonc
