Harvey Pekar, ‘American Splendor’ Writer, Dead At 70

Comic book cult hero was the subject of 2003 Oscar-nominated biopic. By Eric Ditzian Harvey Pekar Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Famed comic book author Harvey Pekar has died at the age of 70, The Associated Press reports. He was found dead in his Cleveland Heights, Ohio, home early Monday (July 12). Pekar had been suffering from prostate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure and depression, according to Cleveland Heights Police Capt. Michael Cannon. He had gone to bed about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and was discovered between a bed and dresser. His wife, Joyce Brabner, called officers at around 1 a.m. The irascible comic writer, long a beloved cult figure, reached a whole new audience in 2003, when Paul Giamatti played him in the Oscar-nominated biopic, “American Splendor.” Pekar also appeared as himself in the film, which was both a postmodern exploration of Pekar’s life and a dramatization of his autobiographical comics, also called “American Splendor.” “The filmmakers took a major risk by incorporating the real Harvey and Joyce and their oddball Cleveland friends into the film, and by introducing occasional elements of cartoon illustration into the story,” Kurt Loder wrote of the film. “This could have been a mess, but it works brilliantly, poetically, unforgettably. In a summer of lumbering, soulless Hollywood blockbusters, ‘American Splendor’ shines out like a diamond on a dunghill.” Not an artist himself, Pekar recruited iconic illustrator R. Crumb in 1976 to create the art for “American Splendor,” which followed Pekar’s struggles with work, finances and general boredom. A long list of other artists would eventually illustrate the series, which Pekar continued to write until 2008. In the 1980s, Pekar became an occasional guest on “Late Night With David Letterman,” where he openly battled with the host and heavily criticized General Electric, which owns NBC. The author was eventually banned from the show, until being invited back the next decade. Mr. Pekar was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1990, and he documented the experience in the graphic novel, “Our Cancer Year.” “I’m always shook up and nervous and I’ve got the hospital record to prove it,” Pekar told the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2003. “I wake up every morning in a cold sweat, regardless of how well things went the day before. And put that I said that in a somewhat but not completely tongue-in-cheek way.” Share your memories of Harvey Pekar’s work in the comments below.

‘Avatar’ Sex Scene Might Be In Extended Film, Sam Worthington Hints

‘There’s a sex scene that everyone keeps talking about, which is going to be unique,’ Worthington says, laughing. By Todd Gilchrist Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News While it’s not entirely clear what will be included in the extended version of “Avatar” slated for release on August 27, the film’s star, Sam Worthington, hinted at what could be in the film’s extra eight minutes during a press day for Full Clip Productions , the comic-book imprint Worthington launched with his partners John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz at Radical Studios. “There were several different hunts that the characters go on,” Worthington told MTV. “There’s a sex scene that everyone keeps talking about, which is going to be unique,” he added, laughing. “But there’s a lot of other stuff to do with the Na’vi, and then there’s also a lot of live-action stuff as well.” Since it became the biggest movie of all time, James Cameron has been largely mum on details about a follow-up to his 2009 blockbuster “Avatar,” probably due less to secrecy than the long gaps between his projects. In the meantime, Fox announced earlier this week that it will re-release the film in theaters with eight new minutes of footage. Although the running time of the original cut of the film was well over two hours, Worthington indicated that any excised footage was removed because it was already long enough, and Cameron didn’t want to push the audiences’ patience too far. “That [material] got taken out because of time constraints, and at the time, not knowing if the movie was going to be successful or not.” It remains to be seen how much more of “Avatar” audiences will want to see, at least in theaters. And although Cameron hasn’t volunteered more than vague details about sequels, it will be interesting to see how quickly even its most fervent fans will move on to thoughts of a follow-up. But Worthington indicated that if the director wanted to release more versions that are eight minutes longer than the last one, he could probably do so for years to come without exhausting his yet-unseen supply. “I think he’s got another eight hours of footage, to be honest with you,” Worthington said. “So I’ll be surprised to see what the eight minutes is.” Will you see the extended version of “Avatar”? Kevin Bacon Cast as X-Men: First Class Baddie?

If it weren’t for X-Men: First Class casting news , would there be anything to write about? Kevin Bacon is reportedly in talks to star in Matthew Vaughn’s rapidly filling up X-Men prequel as the main villain. Because in the prequel Magneto (Matthew Fassbender) isn’t all bad and, as a result, someone needs to bite the dust before the credits roll. Or something. If a deal is worked out, it would mean the comic adaptation would have its first major American performer on board and — even better — give a whole new generation of actors the chance to star in Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Homes so efficient they keep one steady temperature all the time. No, we’re not talking about new X-Men or other comic book characters, we’re talking about animals with skills we can only dream of. These seven animals are way smarter than us — just another reason to pay some respect when we encounter them in the wild…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bozell Column: Kagan’s Comedy Is News?

The shallow and promotional TV coverage of Elena Kagan’s confirmation hearings illustrated once again how the shamelessly ABC, CBS, and NBC shape the political Play-Doh they offer to the American people as “news.” First, there was the amount of coverage.Let’s put it this way: “coverage” is the wrong word. Entire days of hearings, filled with tough exchanges with Republicans on issues like the military, “gay marriage,” and abortion were swept under the rug. Instead, the one talking point every viewer was supposed to remember was this: Kagan is funny! She is really, really funny! At one point in the hearings, they discussed the Obama administration’s very unfunny failure to stop the Christmas Day bomber from almost blowing up a plane as it landed in Detroit. That somehow turned into a joke about Kagan’s Jewishness. Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has seemed desperate to ingratiate himself with Obama’s nominees, set Kagan up to joke that she probably spent Christmas at a Chinese restaurant. If Kagan were trying out for the TV show “Last Comic Standing,” that would seem like a very stale old joke. But the networks were looking for anything in these hearings that (a) wouldn’t bore their dumbest viewer and (b) made Kagan look good. So The Joke was the top story. The fawning was out of control. The networks audaciously boasted that Kagan was so funny that “Saturday Night Live” could not do her justice. On ABC’s “Good Morning America” on June 30, news anchor Juju Chang hailed Kagan’s “lively sense of humor” and then asked co-hosts George Stephanopoulos and Elizabeth Vargas “Who is going to play her in the SNL skit?” Vargas replied: “I don’t think they could be as funny as Elena Kagan was!” On July 2, CBS’s “The Early Show” was still touting the comedy gold. Co-host Harry Smith noted “She was downright funny.” Ana Marie Cox, a former Air America radio host and writer for GQ magazine, called it “a Saturday Night Live skit made live,” whatever that means. She thought it was made more perfect that former SNL writer and Sen. Al Franken is on the Judiciary Committee. Liberal radio host Jane Pratt completed the support circle: “Her joke was good, the Chinese food joke was good.” But, they had no interest in substance that might underline just how radical Kagan’s positions might be. The networks almost completely ignored Kagan’s key role in the Clinton White House efforts to promote the monstrous act of partial-birth abortion. CNSNews.com reported that in 1996, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) sent the Clinton White House a proposed draft statement on partial-birth abortion that declared a panel they convened “could identify no circumstances” under which this skull-puncturing and skull-vacuuming procedure would be “the only option” to save a woman’s life or preserve her health.” On December 13, 1996, Kagan wrote this language would be a “disaster” if released publicly, since it clearly contradicted what President Clinton had claimed. Kagan wrote to ACOG’s associate director of government relations with suggested prose the medical group could use. Partial-birth abortion, she claimed “may be the best or most appropriate procedure in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health of a woman.” Weeks later, ACOG’s public statement carried those exact words from the White House. Three years later, Justice Stephen Breyer repeated those same words in declaring Nebraska’s partial-birth abortion ban unconstitutional. Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee said that armed with these documents, “it appears that Kagan was perhaps the key strategist in blocking enactment of the partial-birth abortion ban act.” He believes that Kagan had “her hands on this from the beginning to the end.”A scandal?  A controversy? A story ?Only CBS legal reporter Jan Crawford came anywhere close on the “CBS Evening News.” She played a snippet of Sen. Orrin Hatch pressing Kagan to admit the notes to ACOG were in her handwriting, but the CBS viewer saw just seconds of this exchange with zero context what these two people were discussing — other than the generic topic of abortion. The grisly specifics were omitted. This example only underlines how anyone who wants to follow weighty issues of public policy, including Supreme Court jurisprudence, should never rely on network television. These networks gave much more time and loving care to England’s Prince Harry falling off a horse on a visit to New York. That is the intellectual depth the public should expect from the airheaded TV “news” elite — at least when Democrats are the ones changing the Supreme Court for the next two or three decades.

‘Grown Ups’ Stars Adam Sandler, Chris Rock Won’t Pick Fights With Vampires

At their red carpet premiere, the comic stars say they’re not even trying to compete with ‘Eclipse.’ By Eric Ditzian Chris Rock and Adam Sandler Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — It is hard to express just how humid it was under the tent outside the Ziegfeld Theatre on Wednesday evening at the red-carpet premiere of “Grown Ups.” Yet, as Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek and the rest of the cast dripped with sweat and made their way through the shouting reporters, they were zinging jokes and having a grand old time. “Grown Ups” (in theaters Friday) is a comedy, after all, and everyone was there for a celebration. It was a celebration in the midst of a summer movie season jam-packed with vampires, werewolves, superheroes and 3-D-assisted blockbusters. Still, Sandler and his crew are not worried about the chances that their flick — about five childhood friends who meet up with their families for a weekend at their favorite lake house — can survive at the cinema. They’re just going to pick their fights wisely, which means avoiding any sort of throwdown with the “Twilight” folks, whose third movie, “Eclipse,” opens next week. “I don’t want no piece of that fight!” Rock told MTV News. “No, don’t even think of that!” added Sandler with a laugh. “We’re in a different division.” No, the strategy for the “Grown Up” cast is to stay exactly where they are and let the laugh-seeking audience come to them — which seems like a savvy strategy, since their movie is projected to gross between $30 and $40 million this weekend. “We just do our own thing,” said co-star Kevin James. “We’re in a bubble. We stay in a bubble where it’s warm. No, I don’t go out into the ‘Twilight’ world. We don’t go near there.” That sentiment was echoed by co-star Rob Schneider. “I don’t want to put us against anybody. Our movie stands on its own,” he said. “I think the five of us could probably take out Iron Man’s ankle. We’ll find out his weakness and take advantage of it. All we can control is, ‘Did we have a good time, did we make a funny movie and would we want to see it?’ ” While the men of “Grown Ups” are doing everything they can to avoid a big-screen brawl with vampires and superheroes, their female cohorts are primed and ready for all comers. “What’s so great about our movie is it’s a family film,” Maria Bello said. “I know people say that, but this is really kids and men and women and grandparents. It’s moving and funny at the same time, and everyone will relate to it.” Added Hayek, “It’s so funny. It’s so funny!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Grown Ups.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

English WAG Carly Cole Has Potential

These pictures of Carly Cole are for all the England football fans getting hammered before their possible World Cup elimination at the hands of Slovenia of all people. I don’t know much about her, but I’m going to say that she’s the hot sister of my future ex-wife Cheryl Tweedy- Cole because she’s married to England footballer Joe Cole and Cheryl used to be married to or is in the process of divorcing England footballer Ashley Cole which is close enough for my dirty mind to create a quite pleasant sister-on-sister fantasy to help get me through the game. Enjoy.

Remember When Last Comic Standing Became the Scariest Show on TV?

Last Comic Standing may not have a sterling reputation, but I’ve never known it to actually frighten viewers. Unfortunately, the venerable standup hour took a dark turn this week, introducing us to a “futuristic” comedian named Mr. Zed who looks like a Madame Tussaud’s rendering of Wink Martindale. Hide the kids! And the grown-ups.

‘Jonah Hex’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Before heading off to the Wild West with Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, check in with our cheat sheet. By Eric Ditzian Megan Fox and Josh Brolin in “Jonah Hex” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures The 2010 summer-movie season has given us swords-and-sandals epics, superhero melees and a cavalcade of 3-D animated blockbusters. What we haven’t yet seen is a straight-up western, partly because that gun-toting, tobacco-chewing genre has largely fallen out of favor in Hollywood. All that changes Friday (June 18), as “Jonah Hex” rides into theaters in a storm of CGI dust and supernatural-inspired storytelling. Josh Brolin stars as Hex himself, a facially scarred bounty hunter with a taste for bullets, broads and revenge. His adversary is John Malkovich’s Quentin Turnbull, who thinks it would be a good idea to unleash the fires of hell on the entire planet. Hex doesn’t think that’s such a swell idea, plus Turnbull’s the dude who killed his family and hot-branded his face, so a quest for vengeance sounds like a pretty good idea. Before you take your own quest to the cinema this weekend, be sure to check out MTV News’ cheat sheet: everything you need to know about “Jonah Hex.” Wrangling the Horses In the early 1970s, writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga created “Jonah” for DC Comics, and the surly antihero continues to appear within DC pages to this day. It wasn’t until summer 2007, though, that Warner Bros. began to ramp up plans to bring the character to the big screen. Brolin began circling the role of Jonah in late 2008 and stayed interested even as directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (“Crank”) parted ways with the production over creative differences. Why did Brolin stay on? “When I first read it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s awful!’ ” Brolin told MTV News . “And then I had a moment a week later, and I thought, ‘Why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.’ ” Malkovich found the movie in early ’09, followed shortly by Megan Fox as a Wild West prostitute named Lilah. In April, we got our first look at the Louisiana-based production, thanks to some rather revealing on-set pics of Fox . Not to be outdone by his sultry co-star, Brolin made his presence as Jonah known in June, when the first photos surfaced of the actor in full, facial prosthetics. Enter the Hex As the year pushed forward, we began to hear from almost everyone with a key role in the production. Brolin spoke glowingly of new director Jimmy Hayward (“Horton Hears a Who!”), Malkovich told us why he signed on for the role, and Fox said of the production , “I think it’s a really good interpretation of the comic. It somehow manages to be super-violent while still having a PG-13 rating. I don’t know how they did that.” Neither do we, but the whole thing seemed to be shaping up quite nicely. Comic-Con brought us the film’s first poster and fresh promo pics followed in the fall. Then trouble set in. Re-shoots kicked off in January of this year, intended to fix unspecified problems with the footage and to be overseen by “I Am Legend” director Francis Lawrence, who was hired as a consultant. And as the June release date approached, fans started to wonder when the first trailer would arrive. It finally appeared at the very end of April — and it looked fairly rad — but questions remained. Days before the trailer dropped, Brolin himself told us the film was very much in flux. “We’re still in the process of solidifying that tone,” he said. “There’s a lot of humor to use in this cut. We’ve been going, ‘How much humor do we use? Do we stay with the emotional line of the story? How can we release some of the exposition so we can just rely on the action?’ All this kind of sh–. We’re in the midst of it, man!” We’re Going Straight to the Wild Wild West From Will Smith and Escape Club songs to the decades’ worth of face-off-at-high-noon flicks, the Wild West has proved fertile creative ground across the pop-culture spectrum. It remains to be seen, however, if “Jonah” can overcome its troubled production history and win big at the box office. The sneak peeks certainly look good: there’s Jonah facing off against Turnbull ; Jonah and Lilah trying to get out of a jam and then showing off their shooting skills ; Jonah getting a little sensitive about his disfigured face; and Jonah riding a horse with a Gatling gun strapped to its side . So will fans come out in support of this latest comic book adaptation? Is there a chance there will be more cinematic “Jonah” coming down the line? Producers have certainly planned for that possibility. “They leave it open for a sequel,” Fox told us . “They tweaked the script so there might be a sequel if necessary.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Jonah Hex.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Megan Fox Hopes She’s ‘Lucky Enough’ To Have A Long Career

‘I haven’t done the same thing twice, and I want to keep moving in that direction,’ ‘Jonah Hex’ actress tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Megan Fox Photo: Bill Sloyer/ MTV News Sometimes, it’s hard to fathom that Megan Fox ‘s prominent place in the pop-culture conversation only dates back to her 2007 breakout role as Mikaela Banes in director Michael Bay’s “Transformers.” Since then, she’s appeared in four films and has two more completed projects on the way, including this weekend’s “Jonah Hex.” And if Fox has her way, she’ll be kicking around on the big screen for several more years to come. “If I’m lucky enough,” Fox told MTV News about her hopes to make her acting career a longtime commitment. “I mean, I would love the opportunity to do that. But that’s not really up to me; that’s up to the world.” Surely, the world would throw its support behind Fox’s desires to stay on the big screen, if only because of her incredibly entertaining offscreen antics (see: her notorious Michael Bay feud ). But Fox doesn’t believe she’s a provocative personality , so much as a misinterpreted one. “I don’t feel like I’ve ever necessarily said anything that was provocative,” she said. “I think that people take relatively innocent statements and turn them into provocative things. … People have no idea how to react. It’s not that the statement itself is outrageous.” As for what the future holds for Fox aside from “Jonah Hex,” the actress will be seen opposite Mickey Rourke in “Passion Play,” a film in which she plays a winged circus performer. Additionally, she remains attached to “Fathom,” an action film based on the comic book created by the late Michael Turner. Beyond those commitments, Fox has only one concrete plan: mixing it up. “I don’t have anything specific, like, a specific genre film that I want to do,” she said. “I just want to keep doing things that are completely different, because so far, I haven’t done the same thing twice, and I want to keep moving in that direction.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Jonah Hex.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
