Beano Cook Dies; ESPN College Football Analyst Was 81

Beano Cook, one of the country’s most well-known college football experts, has passed away from unknown causes. He was 81. A University of Pittsburgh graduate, Cook worked for 10 years as a sports publicist for that school before eventually catching on as an ABC studio commentator in 1982. He then joined ESPN in 1986 and was given the nickname “Cardinal of College Football” due to his vast knowledge of the sport. Most recently, Cook joined ESPN’s Ivan Maisel on a weekly podcast. “He was one of a kind,” George Bodenheimer, ESPN executive chairman, said in a statement. “There never was and never will be another Beano. His combination of humor, passion, love of college football and his engaging personality left an indelible mark on the sport and touched anyone who knew him. Cook also served in the U.S. Army for two years and we send our condolences to his loved ones.

Just hours after the tragic announcement, MTV News took to the busy streets of Times Square to see how her fans are coping with the loss of the music icon. “We’re hearing the news of Whitney Houston’s death, and Whitney was the original diva of my generation,” one fan said proudly. ” ‘I Will Always Love You’ is probably her best ballad. No one can sing that song like Whitney can sing it. “Whitney Houston, rest in peace. We love you,” he added. Houston’s remarkable singing talent turned her into a worldwide phenomenon and made people take notice. “We gonna miss her. Ain’t no musician like that ever going to come. We ain’t ever going to see a singer like that,” another supporter said of her unique skill. Even through her troubles with substance abuse, Team Whitney remained optimistic, as one loyal fanatic confessed, “We would have never thought that she was the one to pass away, out of all people.” Calling her “one of the best voices in R&B history,” another fan opened up about her early age of death saying, “It’s just too bad that she had to go so early, and never got a chance to really come back like we thought she would.” “She’s just such a strong woman. She’s considered like an idol to so many people,” one group of fans added. News of singer Whitney Houston’s death spread like wildfire on Twitter since the news broke with a tweet from Associated Press at 4.57 pm. AP’s tweet was retweeted over 10,000 times. After posting the story on our Hot 1079 Facebook fan page, we received nearly 300 likes in under a hour. The first full hour after the news broke saw 2,481,652 tweets and retweets, peaking at 61,227 tweets at 5.23 pm (all times are PST). That is over a thousand tweets a second, not quite as much as during the Superbowl but still a lot. The most retweeted article after the news broke was from MSNBC, with 13 thousand tweets linking to it. Friends, musicians and celebrities tweeted out their condolences, each of them getting retweeted thousands of times: Rapper Lil Wayne has the record, with over 29,000 retweets as of the time of writing this post. By James Dinh Jared Leto Photo: Leonard Adam/ WireImage With the tragic stage collapse at Sugarland’s Indiana State Fair show still fresh in the minds of concertgoers, Jared Leto sent precaution to 30 Seconds to Mars’ fans at Belgium’s Pukkelpop festival on Thursday night (August 18) as a storm passed through, knocking down several stages and causing at least three deaths and 71 injuries. “CRAZY STORM AT PUKKELPOP IN BELGIUM – NOT SURE WE WILL BE ABLE TO GO ON STAGE – STAYED TUNED. SAFETY FIRST,” Leto tweeted prior to his band’s set. Things took a turn for the worse a mere half-hour later, when Leto tweeted , “FOUR STAGES DOWN – STILL RAINING + THUNDER IF YOU ARE HERE PLEASE BE SAFE.” According to reports, Pukkelpop was hit with strong winds and rainfall at around 6:15 p.m. local time, which caused several structures and stages to collapse. Nearby trees were also uprooted, causing even more damage to the fairgrounds and hazard to the estimated 60,000 in attendance. Chokri Mahassine, the organizer of the three-day festival, told The Associated Press, “We have for now put the festival on hold until we understand the situation completely.” Shortly after the collapse, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman took to his website to send sympathy to those affected by the events. “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives today at the show in Belgium. We are absolutely devastated that this celebration ended in tragedy,” Leto wrote. “To those that were injured we are sending thoughts and prayers. Obviously under these horrible and dangerous circumstances, and out of respect for those who have passed, Thirty Seconds to Mars will not be playing. Its been reported today that 27-year-old singer, Amy Winehouse, was found dead today in her London apartment. TMZ states: “ Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained. ” Although the cause of death is unknown at this time, it’s no secret that Amy Winehouse battled with an addiction to drugs and alcohol and was in and out of rehab for many years during her career. It’s reported that she canceled her tour last month in Europe because she was “completely out of it”. Amy was signed to Island Def Jam and her hit single, “Rehab” which includes the remix with Jay Z, made her into an international superstar. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Amy Winehouse.

Today many of Amy Winehouse’s peers are mourning  the loss of another musical talent. The singer was found dead in her London apartment by local officials. Several of her supporters and collaborators tweeted their condolences and frustration over her death. “R.I.P Sis. Why u couldn’t chill??? ,” wrote Nas , who was spotted hanging out with Winehouse recently , “Why the f*ck u leave? Love U Sis!” Collaborator Salaam Remi kept his thoughts simple. “R.I.P my baby sis Cherry Winehouse. Love ya Always.” Mark Ronson , who won a Grammy for his work with Winehouse, wrote: “She was my musical soulmate & like a sister to me.
