NYC Construction Worker Killed By Tape Measure That Fell 50 Stories via Gawker In a freak accident that does nothing to calm your fears of objects falling from the sky and killing you, a construction worker in Jersey City died this morning after a one-pound tape measure fell 50 stories and hit him in the head. According to the Associated Press, the 50-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was apparently not wearing a hardhat when the tape measure fell, ricocheting off construction equipment below and hitting him in the head. From NBC New York: “As he walked over, a 1-pound tape measure fell off the belt of a contractor working on the 50th floor, bounced off a piece of metal construction equipment about 10 feet off the ground and hit him in the head, police said. He was knocked unconscious and later died at the hospital.” The Jersey Journal reports that the man was delivering sheet rock to the construction site for two 50-story buildings attached to a hotel. Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West bought a $20 million mansion in Hidden Hills, Calif. But apparently before that they were building a palace of their own… with two kids’ rooms. We’re not sure what became of the original dream home, but we do know that in a new clip from this week’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians , Kim gives her grandmother, M.J., a tour of the construction site and drops a major bombshell: Kim Kardashian Talks Second Baby Plans “This is gonna be the second kid’s room,” says Kim tells her grandma. M.J. (who might be the coolest one in the family, BTW) replies, “You mean guest room?” “No, I mean second kid’s room,” says Kim. “You never know. i feel like by the time we move in, I’ll probably be pregnant, and we’ll make this the nursery.” Yes, despite the difficulties of Kim’s first pregnancy , it seems she can’t wait to pop out a little Yeezy, Jr. M.J., meanwhile, has her priorities straight: “You did all this and no bar?” M.J. laughs. Kim points out that she doesn’t “drink at all,” to which M.J. replies, “Well I do!” Then on the topic of M.J’s pot use, Kim says, “I really wasn’t for the medical marijuana, but if it’s fully making her better, I’m all for it.” Wow, we knew Kim was boring, but she’s really anti-weed in 2014? Did Kanye know he was marrying a Jane Austen character? Hey, if you’re not having any fun anyway, you might as well be pregnant all the time! 19 Totally Adorable North West Photos 1. Morning, Kim and Nori! It’s Kim Kardashian and daughter Nori! The former posted this photo online with a simple caption: Good morning.
Because apparently they’re still making those dumb Scary Movies , they just changed the name, here’s Kirsty Hill at the premiere of A Haunted House 2 . Anyway, if you recognize Kirsty and her massive cleavage, it’s probably from her old name too: when she used to go by Sophie Dee in acclaimed movies like Busty Construction Girls and Alien Babes in Heat . That’s right, she used to be a Welsh porn star and now she’s making the transition to dumb spoof movies. I bet her parents still tell people she’s a porn star. That’s way more respectable. The girl known only as “Baby Hope,” whose abused, decomposed body was found in an ice chest by the side of a New York roadway in 1991, has been revealed. She is 4-year-old Anjelica Castillo, and her alleged killer has finally been arrested as well, 22 years later: Conrado Juarez, 52, is the girl’s cousin. He has been charged with murder. Baby Hope Arrest Made, Identity Revealed Remarkably, detectives from the New York Police Department’s Cold Case Apprehension Squad never stopped searching for answers in the case. Even more remarkably, they eventually got them. Each year, on the anniversary of the July 23, 1991, discovery of her body, they canvassed neighborhoods, handing out fliers and asking for information. It was an anonymous tip called in after the latest canvass in July 2013 that helped crack the case at last, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. It led detectives to Anjelica’s sister, now an adult; from there, they identified the woman believed to be the girl’s mother, and the pieces came together. “That individual’s actions were the catalyst for this most recent lead,” Kelly said, referring to Juarez’s arrest. He is Anjelica’s cousin on her father’s side. Police arrested Juarez after questioning him near the restaurant where he worked as a dishwasher. He was expressionless as he was taken into custody. Juarez admitted to the crime Saturday morning. Then 30 years old, he said he went to a Queens shared by seven of his relatives and saw Anjelica in the hallway, where he smothered and raped her. When the girl went motionless, Juarez summoned his sister from another room. She told Juarez to get rid of the body and who provided the cooler. He then “folded the girl in half,” tied her, placed her in a garbage bag inside the cooler and placed soda cans on top of her body, said NYPD officials. Construction workers found the body of Anjelica, who was never reported missing, bound and in a garbage bag, hidden in a blue and white cooler. She had been smothered and sexually molested, and her body was so badly decomposed that sketches were made to suggest what she looked like. Two years later, the girl was laid to rest in a donated plot, buried in a white dress bought by a detective’s wife, with a tombstone paid for by detectives. “Because we care” reads the inscription at the bottom of the tombstone of the long-nameless child known only until this week as Baby Hope.
Something tells us Taylor isn’t as sweet as she seems. Taylor Swift At Odds With Neighbors According to Radar Online Stopping to pose with fans as she shopped at Stop ‘N’ Shop and Marshall’s in Narragansett, Rhode Island, last Friday, Taylor Swift looked like the sweet girl next door. But her real neighbors are up in arms about changes that have come to Watch Hill, Rhode Island ever since she bought a $17M mansion on the beach there. “Now that summer has come and people are getting ready to use the beach, people are really grumbling about having Taylor in town,” an insider tells RadarOnline.com. “Her property line is at the path to the public beach and she always has guards patrolling the area,” the insider explains. “It’s making it such a hassle.” At another area of Taylor’s property is a beach wall that local teens and surfers have hung out at for years. But now, “her guards are always asking them to leave,” the source says. Taylor’s caution is understandable, considering a stalker was arrested for swimming up to her beach house earlier this month. But, “If she wanted privacy, she shouldn’t have bought a house overlooking a public beach!” the source says. Maybe Chris Brown can give Taylor advice on how to deal with disgruntled neighbors…not.
He may never, ever be getting back together with Taylor Swift . But his status as a single man on Valentine’s Day is the least of Conor Kennedy’s this morning. The 18-year old was arrested (along with 47 others) yesterday outside the White House. The reason? His protest of the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, which he believed would carry dirty oil into the country. “The threat to our planet’s climate is both grave and urgent,” civil rights activist Julian Bond said in a statement. “Although President Obama has declared his own determination to act, much that is within his power to accomplish remains undone, and the decision to allow the construction of a pipeline to carry millions of barrels of the most-polluting oil on Earth from Canada’s tar sands to the Gulf Coast of the U.S. is in his hands.” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah were among those led away in handcuffs alongside Conor, with witnesses saying the crowd cheered upon seeing such famous faces.
Stevie’s not afraid to tell it like it is ; even if it means getting some criticism for standing up for what he believes in . While he’s pulled out of the concert (which raises money for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces), some are questioning why he agreed to do it in the first place. According to BBC News , Stevie released a statement explaining exactly why he was backing out: …”I am and have always been against war, any war, anywhere.” A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is currently in place, after a week of violence in Gaza last month. But tensions still run high. On Friday, Israel announced it would authorize the construction of 3,000 more housing units in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The decision followed a UN General Assembly vote to upgrade the Palestinians’ status to non-member observer state. Next week’s gala concert supports an organization which raises money for Israeli soldiers and their families. Wonder said the United Nations (and other organizations) had recommended cancelling his performance because he is an official UN “Messenger of Peace”. In his statement, the 62-year-old said he had made the decision with a heavy heart. “Given the current and very delicate situation in the Middle East, and with a heart that has always cried out for world unity, I will not be performing,” he added. The musician said he would make contributions to charities that support Israeli and Palestinian children with disabilities. While the FIDF organization is seemingly for a good cause, you’ve got to admit that seeing Stevie sing at a charity event raising money for Israeli anything would have left a bad taste in some of our mouths; even Former President Jimmy Carter has compared Israel’s actions to apartheid. We’re glad he did what he thought was right and his new donation towards children with disabilities is for the better cause. Images via tumblr
In what could be one of the unlikeliest director-project pairings to come down the pike in some time, Vulture is reporting that Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin is talking to Universal Pictures about directing L.A. Riots — a cinematic re-telling of the 1991 uprising that was sparked by four Los Angeles Police Department officers’ brutal beatdown of Rodney King. According to the website, the project was first set up at Universal six years ago, with Spike Lee set to direct a script by Red Tails screenwriter John Ridley, but the studio wouldn’t give the Do The Right Thing filmmaker the $35 million he required to make the movie he wanted. If Lin gets the green light, he’ll be making the picture for Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, but it’s unclear whether he’ll still be using Ridley’s script. Video of King’s vicious beating during a March 3, 1991 traffic stop became one of the most horrific and indelible images of that decade, and during the riots, the construction worker appeared on TV to utter his now-famous line: “Can we all get along?” In June, King became news again when he was found dead at the bottom of the swimming pool at his California home. The February shooting of unarmed Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch coordinator for a gated community in Sanford, Fla., also recalled the incident. Lin is currently shooting the sixth film in the Fast and Furious franchise, which is slated for a May 24, 2013 release date. According to Vulture, Universal is seeking to keep the director happy “by allowing him to tackle a topic that’s quite a bit more serious”, though budget remains a question. One talent agent told the website: “They didn’t want to make this movie for $35 million with Spike [Lee] four years ago, and with the way the business has changed, I can’t imagine they’re going to spend even $20 million to make it now.” Watch It On YouTube.
