Study shows Christian fundamentalists more likely to commit domestic abuse

A recent study released by two Texas Tech professors found the more fundamental the Christian beliefs of college students are, the more likely those students are to commit domestic abuse. A survey distributed to more than 600 undergraduate students shows that the more fundamental the Christian beliefs college students adopt, the more likely they are to approve of or become violent in their intimate relationships. The study measured fundamental Christian values using a survey created by a Christian group. The study defined Christian fundamentalism as a system of beliefs and practices rooted in a literal interpretation of the Bible, being born-again, and the belief that following strict behavior through a Christian fellowship leads to eternal life. http://ww.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2010m7d19-Study-shows… added by: unimatrix0

EMT accused of ignoring dying NYC woman is killed

NEW YORK (AP) — Jason Green had already gained notoriety last year as a New York City paramedic accused of walking away from an ailing pregnant woman who later died. He regained the spotlight again Monday because of his violent death – gunned down on the streets of Manhattan after a fight outside a nightclub. New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said Monday that there was no evidence that the brutal slaying early Sunday in the SoHo neighborhood was payback for the death of the pregnant woman. He denied reports that investigators wanted to question her brother. “There's no interest in any of her family members,” he said. Police, who were still seeking the shooter, were reviewing security videotape of the scene outside the club, Browne said. Green's attorney, Douglas Rosenthal, said Monday he was “shocked” by the news of the shooting. His 32-year-old client “was a good guy and a dedicated emergency medical technician,” he said. “It's very sad.” The lawyer had defended Green and a co-worker, Melisa Jackson, against allegations stemming from a conflict Dec. 9, 2009, at an Au Bon Pain coffee shop in Brooklyn. Green and Jackson were on a break while working as dispatchers that morning when it was alleged employees in the shop told them a pregnant cashier, Eutisha Rennix, was having a seizure. Witnesses claimed the pair left without doing anything to help. The 25-year-old woman, who was six months pregnant, later died at a hospital. Her baby was delivered but died two days later. The Fire Department suspended Green and Jackson for 30 days without pay before reinstating them. The Brooklyn district attorney's office said Monday that it was still investigating Rennix's death. No charges have been filed. In an interview this year with The New York Times, Green and Jackson said that Rennix's co-workers never made clear there was an emergency, and that Jackson called a dispatcher for help before they went back to work. Accusations that the pair callously ignored someone in distress are “all bogus and lies and fabrications,” Green said. Police said Sunday's shooting occurred after a friend of Green's was turned away from the Greenhouse nightclub because he was wearing shorts. While Green, the friend and two women were talking outside, a car with three men inside pulled up and tried to park where they were standing. An ensuing argument escalated into a fistfight between Green and one of the men that spilled out onto the street, police said. The man pulled out a gun and shot Green two times before the men fled in the car. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_EMTS_PREGNANT_WOMAN?SITE=AP&SECTIO… video: http://video.ap.org/?f=AP&pid=jEja1keMtTiW_bzY7WrdYnLDrBxhdl_R added by: onemalefla

Sarah Palin Calls On ‘Peaceful Muslims’ To ‘Refudiate’ Ground Zero Mosque

Sarah Palin, never a stranger to controversy, decided to weigh in on the one raging over the plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero — that is, a mosque and community center two blocks north of where the Twin Towers used to stand. In the midst of it, she managed to insult Muslims, those who aren't but still support the mosque and lay a George W. Bush-level malapropism on the masses. She's a multitasker. Her Tweet, issued at 1:52 pm ET on Sunday (and pictured to the left) read: Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn't it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate Obviously, her Tweet connotes that Muslims who are not peaceful are the ones who are supporting the mosque — despite all evidence to the contrary — but it equally egregiously mashes together the words “refute” and “repudiate” to create out of whole cloth the word “refudiate.” Refute, of course, means “to deny the truth or accuracy of” while repudiate means “to reject with disapproval or condemnation.” Presumably, what Palin meant to do was to call upon “peaceful” Muslims” to repudiate the construction of a mosque anywhere near Ground Zero. added by: TimALoftis

Left-Wing Talk Show Host Ed Schultz Lashes Out at MRC/NB Summer Intern

On his June 24 radio show, left-wing host Ed Schultz went on a rant against NewsBusters’ Matt Hadro, who earlier that day wrote a pretty inoffensive piece documenting how Schultz credited President Obama’s $862 billion stimulus package with more than doubling the size of his North Dakota construction firm. Schultz bizarrely (and incorrectly) tried to ridicule the Media Research Center summer intern as a spoiled rich kid. (Audio excerpt here .) Did Mommy and Daddy pay your way to go to school? Are you a little conservative boy that gets all the tax breaks of the top 2 percent rich? Have you ever gotten your hands dirty doing a job, Matt? [employs falsetto voice] ‘Oh, Matty, it’s time for milk and cookies! It’s 4:00, come home now! And here’s some more money. Oh, I think it’s so cute that you’re working for those wonderful conservatives over at Newsbusters. Oh, Matty!’ I’ll bet you that’s exactly who that kid is. What triggered Schultz’s wrath was Hadro’s matter-of-fact reporting of what the talk radio host said on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal on Wednesday: “We’ve gone from eight employees to 20 employees in the past year, because of the stimulus package,” he said of his construction company. “We’ve put some people back to work. There is some growth.” Schultz is evidently quite thin-skinned, since Hadro’s piece included no criticism of the host, his construction company, or the stimulus, but merely recounted what he said on C-SPAN. But the topic obviously struck a nerve, since Schultz lashed out at NewsBusters as “so negative” and “so hateful” in its depiction of him: Tell me, what’s negative about expanding a company?! What’s negative about giving someone a job?! These people are so negative on America, and so hateful of Obama and anybody who has any type of success whatsoever, the mission is to put ’em in light, in bad light, any way they possibly can. Here’s a longer transcript of Schultz’s June 24 fulmination: ED SCHULTZ: Hell, the righties, they’re even upset when we do create jobs. What’s the big deal? Those of you who follow the radio show, I wouldn’t call it a running feud because they’re not worth it, but I do love to point out every time I make NewsBusters, which is Brent Bozell’s right-wing, psycho-analysis, conservative think-tank. They like to, well, they just write a bunch of stuff about me, no matter what it is. (…) I’m on C-SPAN yesterday and I live my life a little bit on the air. It is a fact that this President has done so much for small business, more than anybody else that I can see in recent terms. And our company has gone from eight employees to 18, 20, 22, depending on what’s going on, what the project is! It’s American! It’s risk-taking! It’s what I talk about! And you jerks over at NewsBusters, you never call me, which shows that you’re not journalists. Never have you ever interviewed me. But this is how these conservative psychopaths operate. Tell me, what’s negative about expanding a company?! What’s negative about giving someone a job?! These people are so negative on America and so hateful of Obama and anybody who has any type of success whatsoever, the mission is to put ‘em in light, in bad light, any way they possibly can. So the story reads, “While defending the Obama administration as a champion for small business owners, MSNBC host Ed Schultz revealed that his construction company more than doubled its number of employees in the past year – thanks to the stimulus bill.” Oh! Obama wrote me a check. Is that what it was? Is that the idiot implication there? Anybody who knows anything about jobs in construction knows that you have to bid! But, I think what we’re going to do is, we’re going to check out who Matt Hadro is and we’re going to find out how much money he makes. We’re going to find out if he’s ever written a check for someone else who’s done work for him. We’re going to find out if he is a risk taker! In fact, I’m going to see if I can find out a little bit more about Brent Bozell. What has he ever done other than suck the hind tit off conservatives who want to fuel money right into his conservative think tank. He’s a leech. I’m out there supporting the boys, hiring kids, paying ’em union wages, getting ’em health care, doin’ what I gotta do, growing the company. But because I’m on MSNBC and because I champion for small businesses, they try to cook up some kind of a story like there’s, well, (sarcastically), what’s going on here? Continuing to read it — it’s actually kind of funny, because there’s no new information there. There’s nothing there, other than what I said on C-SPAN. Absolutely nothing there. And I love it. I love the publicity. And I love pointing out who these jerks are, and how poor they are when it comes to research. And Matt Hadro, I’m going to make you a star, buddy. I want to make you a star. I want you to show some spine and be a guest on the Ed Schultz radio show. Hell, I’ll even put you on TV. I can do that too. And let’s debate the stimulus package. And let’s find out what you’re all about. Did mommy and daddy pay your way to go to school? Are you a little conservative boy that gets all the tax breaks of the top 2 percent rich? Have you ever gotten your hands dirty doing a job, Matt? [Pretending to be Matt’s mother] ‘Oh Matty, it’s time for milk and cookies, it’s four o’clock, come home now. And here’s some more money. Oh, I think it’s so cute that you’re working for those wonderful conservatives over at Newsbusters. Oh, Matty!’ I’ll bet you that’s exactly who that kid is. (Laughing) And Matt, I will pay your airfare from wherever the hell you are, at no expense to NewsBusters, I will put you on a plane. Well, better yet, I’ll put you on my plane. And I will take you to our construction site. And I will show you and let you interview the guys who were jobless until they came to work for E. A. Schultz Construction. You know what I’ll even do, Matt? I’ll even open up our books. I’ll show you what we’ve bid on, I’ll show you what we’ve won, I’ll show you what we’ve lost. In fact, if you have a hair on your ass, maybe you’d like to work. Do some real work instead of playing with that computer and throwing up a bunch of hate and half truths and accusations. You see, Matt, I believe in the working people. You don’t. You wanted to vilify our efforts. You want to vilify our investment. You want to put us in a bad light because we are, proudly, a liberal construction company! That actually pays people!

The Preservation/Environmentalism Connection: Stephanie Meeks Replaces Richard Moe

I was saddened when Richard Moe announced his retirement as president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; he was a huge influence, a strong and early voice delivering a message that the greenest building is the one already standing, that our urban, walkable and existing communities are among our greenest. I was excited yesterday to learn that his replacement, Stephanie Meeks, spent 18 years at the The Nature Conservancy , confirming a bond between the preservation and environmental movements. So what is the Preservation / Enviromentalism connection? We round up some … Read the full story on TreeHugger

White House Pledges $400 Million to Palestinians

A White House statement calls the $400 million aid package announced Wednesday “a down payment on the United States’ commitment to Palestinians in Gaza, who deserve a better life and expanded opportunities, and the chance to take part in building a viable, independent state of Palestine, together with those who live in the West Bank.” The commitment includes money for new schools, infrastructure and repairs throughout the Palestinian territories, but, as the Guardian points out, there’s no mention of how the U.S. plans to get banned construction materials past Israel and Egypt’s blockade of Gaza.

Sacrifice

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve met so many wonderful people at convention and my book signings.  What has affected me the most are the inspiring stories told and sent to me from veterans who admire my dad and have their own incredible stories to share. They are humbling, inspiring and unforgettable.  One of the most moving is the YouTube video below that hundreds of people have sent to me. I think it speaks for itself and I encourage everyone to watch and share.

Ground Zero

Yesterday we accompanied Mom and Dad to a September 11th memorial ceremony at Ground Zero in New York City. Mom and Dad met with Senator Obama and they accompanied New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg to the temporary memorial that exists in the middle of the construction site where the towers once stood. It was a day of somber reflection and remembrance.

Touring Renault’s Flagship Green Car Factory

Image by B. Alter Renault’s factory, Maubeuge Construction Automobile , is its flagship, state of the art environmental workplace. Located in Maubeuge, northern France, since 1978, all the Kangoo vans are made there, as will the new electric Kangoo Be Bop Z.E. in 2011. The factory is usually not open to the public for obvious reasons of confidentiality, but a group of green bloggers and journalists were invited to learn about and see for themselves the many and all encompassing environmental measures that have been introduced.
