Ryan Seacrest Promises A ‘Wild Animal’ On ‘American Idol’ Panel

‘There will be a wild animal in one of the seats,’ host tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Ryan Seacrest Photo: MTV News The next season of “American Idol” will see Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler at the judges’ table alongside “Idol” vet Randy Jackson. Fans might expect both Lopez and Tyler to be wild cards in terms of judging the show, but the show’s host, Ryan Seacrest, recently explained that someone on the panel is completely out of control. “We added a wild animal to the panel. There will be a wild animal in one of the seats,” Seacrest told MTV News at KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball 2010 in Los Angeles over the weekend, not specifying who that person is. “I can’t tell you which wild animal, but it was one that was on the ark. So that’s something that’s new. Yes, there’s a total animal.” Sure, the new judges are one reason to tune in to the coming season, but Seacrest is talking up the talent as well, giving the contestants two thumbs up. “The contestants that we found — we brought more kids back to Hollywood than ever before, there’s like 240 of them, so I think we’ve got a really good shot to find some fantastic [talent],” he explained. Lopez recently opened up about joining the juggernaut of a series, explaining that she’s really enjoying her place alongside Tyler and Jackson. “I love everybody,” she said. “It’s such a machine. It runs like clockwork. I love [executive producer] Nigel [Lythgoe]. I love Ryan [Seacrest]. I love Steven [Tyler]. I love Randy [Jackson]. Everything’s great!” While she’s managing to get along with everyone, judging people is a bit difficult for the singer/actress. “It’s easy when they’re really good and it’s easy when they’re really bad,” she said. “It’s when they’re in the middle. … It’s a really hard process. It just depends how you are in the audition. I think it is a good depiction of how the business is. I think it’s just fast-forward.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Trailer Warns Of ‘Dark Times’

Second-to-last ‘Potter’ installment hits theaters November 19. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. As promised, the latest trailer for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” arrived online Wednesday (September 22), and it is a doozy. Fans who have been following the trajectory of the film’s crafty promotional plan will have a lot to take in after giving it a look-see. Like the TV spots and clips that have been released before it, this trailer opens with an ominous, almost sinister feel. “These are dark times, there is no denying,” Bill Nighy says as Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, who is shown giving a press conference on the dire state of world affairs. “Harry … tell me where he is,” Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) serpent-like whisper follows, voicing over images of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named creepily gliding into Dumbledore’s tomb, and then a quick cut of Harry standing alone outside a tent on a rocky landscape. “Our world has faced no greater threat than it does today,” Scrimgeour’s voice continues, over shots of Hermione and Ron looking serious and concerned, and then Harry and Hermione are shown visiting his parents’ grave. “But you can’t fight the war on your own, Mr. Potter,” Scrimgeour’s voice continues. “He is too strong.” As the Minister’s words trail off, Harry is shown holding a broken piece of mirror, which shows Dumbledore falling into a dark abyss. The trailer then kicks into high gear, with dramatic music and shots of preparation for various battles, including a very poignant meeting of Voldemort’s Death Eaters, at which the duplicitous Severus Snape is seated. “We have infiltrated the Ministry,” he says. Cut to chaos at the Ministry, with stuffy politicians trying to maintain order (one of whom is forever-pink-clad Dolores Umbridge flashing her characteristic grimace/facade of calm), and then more familiar shots of Harry, Ron and Hermione traveling cross-country on their journey, over rocky hills, in the middle of a bustling London. This is followed by a series of escape-esque shots, including seeing the six Harry clones/look-alikes, which readers of the book will remember is the tool the Order of the Phoenix use in an attempt to safely move the real Harry from one location to the next. Cut to an impressive array of quick action shots: The Death Eaters attacking Bill and Fleur’s wedding! Hagrid trying to whisk Harry away on his motorbike! Everyone running through the forest! A mid-air magic fight with wizards wielding wands while riding Thestrals! There is even the very tense argument between Ron and Harry in the tent that leads to a physical altercation. More battling! Houses destroyed! Harry, Ron and Hermione running! All leading up to Voldemort’s creepy voice-over once more: “I have seen your heart,” he says. “And it is mine,” before sending a menacing flash of lightning into the sky that cleverly forms the film’s title. Cue the all-over-body chills. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” will hit theaters on November 19. What do you think of the trailer?!? ‘American Idol’ Judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez Talk ‘Tough Love’

‘We’re sure going to send some people home with broken hearts,’ Aerosmith frontman insists. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images We have been following news on season 10 of “American Idol” before season nine even began. It all started back in January with the shock of Simon Cowell’s departure . Then Ellen DeGeneres was out ! Then Kara DioGuardi ! The rumored new judges piled on from there, with names like Jessica Simpson, Elton John and Justin Timberlake thrown up for consideration. Eventually, that field was narrowed to two: Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler , who were announced as official “Idol” judges during a Fox press conference Wednesday (September 22). One of the many questions asked of the new panelists during the big event was: Will they get in touch with their inner-Simon Cowell and be tough on the contestants? “How tough will I be? I believe in tough love,” Lopez said. “But I don’t think I will ever, as an artist myself, I could never be cruel to another artist,” she added. “I think there are definitely better ways to get your point across. I’ve mentored on the show before, so I think people have seen that and kinda can feel how I’ll be — or maybe they’ll be surprised.” Tyler said he, too, has no plans for outrageous tongue-lashings and will instead be trying to protect himself from getting too attached. “We’re sure going to send some people home with broken hearts,” Tyler admitted. “But with all that we’ve been through in our careers, living vicariously through the young talent out there, it’s going to be hard. But it’s also going to be fun, because they’re stepping up to the plate, and so are we.” Who will be tougher: Lopez or Tyler? Sound off in the comments! ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Cast Most A-List Ever? Experts Weigh In!

Huge ratings and big stars like the Situation have made ‘DWTS’ a ‘go-to TV show,’ says one pop-culture expert. By Jocelyn Vena “Dancing with the Stars” cast Photo: ABC With names as recognizable as the Situation, David Hasselhoff, Audrina Patridge, Michael Bolton and “Brady Brunch” vet Florence Henderson, the 11th season of “Dancing With the Stars” is shaping up to be one of the most pop-culturally relevant in the show’s five-year history. And experts contend that the show, which premiered on Monday night, now has enough clout to book not only celebrities with a legitimate footnote in pop-culture history but also stars at the peak of their careers. “Well, I think it’s just the nature of the beast, both the show and reality TV in general, that they are bigger now than they were when ‘Dancing With the Stars’ started,” said TVGuide.com staff editor Joyce Eng, explaining why this season packs so much star power. “Two of [the contestants] are reality stars. I don’t think it’s that surprising for them to do another reality show, especially for the Sitch, capitalizing on his fame now.” David Caplan, an entertainment journalist who has worked at celebrity magazines including People and Star, had another explanation, saying that the show has gone beyond camp value and is now considered by many to be legitimate work. ” ‘Dancing With the Stars’ has established itself as a go-to TV show,” he said. “It has incredible ratings, and by doing this show it allows a lot of people to expand their platform. You go on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and you generate so much more press. For instance, some celebrity weekly will do a ‘How Bristol Palin Got in Shape’ story.” So how did it happen? Well, Caplan said, each new season added to a snowball effect. “It started off small,” he added, “and then progressed each season as more relevant people realized, ‘This is good for my career.’ ” Eng added, “As for other big names [besides Audrina and the Situation], the show has pursued certain people for years, and I think it’s entirely possible that some stars were skeptical, tentative about signing on in the earlier seasons,” she said. “But now that the show has blown up or friends/ old co-stars have gone on [ cough ] the Hoff [ cough ], ‘90210’ people, they’ve joined.” Brad Witter, a reporter at US Weekly, noted that season 11’s contestants have the celebrity factor that makes them appealing to viewers — and the tabloids. “In the past, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ got the reputation that it’s for washed-up people, but as the seasons have gone on, it’s gotten more popular, and the ratings are huge,” Witter explained. “A lot of people that are on this season are people that have been in the spotlight up until now and are still running in our magazine. This season, it’s people that America already cares about and are invested in.” What did you think of the “DWTS” premiere episode? Tell us in the comments! Big Brother Repulsion Index: The Penguin’s Straight Edge

While Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm found their inner Springsteen on the Emmys last night , Big Brother tapped into its inner idiot. Producers outfitted some houseguests in penguin costumes and taped them doing normal everyday stuff (shaving, leg presses), robbed the entire household of its silverware and taped the contestants struggling to eat food with their fingers and then, when all of the low-minded fun was had, producers zoomed in on a few conveniently-placed Coke bottles. Below, Movieline ranks the most repulsive characters in last night’s abominable excuse for a reality-show episode.

Should Big Brother Have Shown a Contestant Masturbating on the Live Feed?

Sorry to interrupt your Wednesday workday — and believe you me, this is as awkward as that episode of Weeds where Nancy Botwin has to confront her son about his habit of masturbating to a photo of her — but as a viewer of Big Brother , I am concerned about how much the producers get off on footage of their contestants craftily masturbating in showers , boxes , beds and fake lawns .

‘American Idol’ Producer Nigel Lythgoe Discusses Show’s Future

‘I’m reading so much baloney,’ Lythgoe says of rumor-filled search for new judges. By James Montgomery Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Earlier this month, it was announced that Nigel Lythgoe would be returning to “American Idol” as an executive producer, ending a two-year absence during which the once-mighty show took a tumble, in terms of both ratings and cultural relevance. His return couldn’t have come during a more tenuous time for “Idol,” which has already seen the departures of iconic judge Simon Cowell , quickly improving Kara DioGuardi and, uh, genuinely nice Ellen DeGeneres . In fact, at the moment, the show has just one judge under contract for next season (that would be Randy Jackson) and has embarked on a lengthy, rumor-filled search to find two new talents to pair him with, with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and, until recently, Jennifer Lopez the reported frontrunners. Obviously, Lythgoe has his work cut out for him. Rumors abound that he’s contemplating a massive overhaul of the show, though in a new interview with Yahoo Music he kept his plans close to the vest while making it very clear that he believes “Idol” ‘s flagging fortunes can be reversed. “Listen, I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think the show could be turned around,” he said. “I do think if we put the focus back in the right place, which is on that young talent, [then] why wouldn’t it be successful?” Lythgoe also downplayed reports that J.Lo’s diva-like demands had taken her out of consideration for the “Idol” judges’ table, and cautioned that no one should believe anything they’ve read about just who will be joining Jackson on the show. It’s still very early in the process, after all. “I’m reading so much baloney in everything. There was something in the press saying Jennifer Lopez is a diva. That woman is in no way a diva, they don’t know what divas are if they think Jennifer Lopez is one. … There is so much rubbish going on,” he said. “My feeling is [the selection process] depends on the content of the panel, and the chemistry within it. I don’t care if they’re Romanian, as long as they fit in with the people around them, and we get a feeling that they know what they’re talking about. “All you want [in an “Idol” judge] is somebody who’s going to be honest with their decisions, not somebody who’s going to say things to be nice,” he continued. “And why would a star, in truth, want to come on that show and say, ‘You were crap tonight?’ because that star is going to be booed. … So it’s going to be really difficult. You just want honest people.” To that end, Lythgoe added that “Idol” might just choose a few lesser-known talents to serve as judges. After all, it worked in the past, and Lythgoe sees no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Such a move just might return the focus of the show back towards the contestants. “Don’t forget, when I started ‘American Idol,’ I brought over Simon Cowell, who no one had heard of, and a young man called Randy Jackson … and Paula Abdul, who a lot of people had said, well, her career is over,” he said. “And that was the start of a team that will be revered every time judges are spoken about. So it isn’t just about what you’ve done in your career, it’s about how you fit in with other people around you. And at the end of the day, it’s about the contestants and their talent, and it’s not about the judges.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
