Songwriter The-Dream tells ‘RapFix Live’ of Rihanna, ‘She’s my friend, so whatever she wants to do is whatever she wants to do.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The-Dream on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Fans were shocked and some outraged when they heard Rihanna ‘s “Birthday Cake” remix with ex-beau Chris Brown . The-Dream, who wrote the song, admits that he was a bit surprised when Rihanna told him that she’d like to include the man who once assaulted her on the track, but the “Shawty is a 10” singer was far more understanding than Rih Rih’s detractors. “At the end of the day, she’s my friend, so whatever she wants to do is whatever she wants to do,” The-Dream told Sway when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (February 22), just two days after Rihanna released the controversial remix. The-Dream remembers first getting the call from Rihanna while driving in Miami. “I think I’m gonna put Chris on it,” he remembers the Talk That Talk singer saying to him over the phone nonchalantly. “I don’t know which Chris you talkin’ about, [but] OK, cool, whatever you say,” The-Dream remembers responding. Of course there is really only one Chris, and The-Dream came to grips with the reality that the two would be coming together in song after the damaging 2009 assault that left Rihanna battered and bruised and Brown public enemy #1. “She’s pretty smart too. The same questions that went through my mind, and I’m an artist also, had to have gone through hers,” The-Dream told “RapFix Live.” “When she raised the question to me, I know she’s not crazy. So my thought was you’ve been thinking about this, you’ve already thought it out, so evidently you know what reaction you gonna get.” The singer/songwriter said that he was just happy that she gave him enough forewarning that he too could prepare for any type of backlash. Still, despite the rumblings of whether or not Rihanna is sending the right message collaborating with Chris on “Birthday Cake” as well as Brown’s “Turn Up the Music” remix, The-Dream says that it all boils down to forgiveness. “Don’t say you know how to forgive when you don’t,” he warned. “Everybody knows what took place, cool. Have the power to really forgive if that’s what it is, if not stay on that side of the fence from the beginning.” In no way did The-Dream condone Brown’s behavior on that February night in 2009, but he does suggest that it is time for people to move on. “It’s easy to kinda throw Chris under the bus all the time, but c’mon, man. OK, we get it,” he said. Do you support Rihanna’s decision to work with Chris Brown again? Leave your comment below! ‘She should be looking for more positive publicity,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Uptin Saiidi M.I.A. performs at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage NEW YORK — M.I.A. made headlines during Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show Sunday when she flipped off the cameras … and the 100 million-plus viewers tuning in at home. It was reported Tuesday that the controversial MC might be responsible for any FCC fines incurred because of her middle finger. But who should be held responsible? And why did she do it in the first place? MTV News ventured to Times Square — where the New York Giants’ Super Bowl victory was celebrated earlier in the day with a parade — to see what people thought of M.I.A.’s flip decision. “It was not good for her, because she’s still a young and up-and-coming artist, so she should be looking for more positive publicity,” Valon Jaloshey, 22, told MTV News. “That’s not the way to get it when you’re giving the middle finger at the biggest performance of your life.” Maureen Kelley, 26, wasn’t surprised by the artist’s action but thinks her timing was inappropriate. “It’s definitely very M.I.A. to have done that,” Kelley said. “She probably shouldn’t have done it at the Super Bowl.” Kelley does have some advice for dealing with a potential fine: “Maybe she could just pretend that she was wiggling her fingers, I don’t know.” M.I.A.’s fellow halftime performer Cee Lo Green , meanwhile, exclusively told MTV News late Monday that he knew nothing about the flip-off until the game was long over. “Honestly, I did not hear anything about it,” he said. “There was no talk about it in the dressing room afterwards and we didn’t stay long after the performance, because it was honestly a relief we had had it done. So I didn’t hear anything until I got up to do the morning show, ‘Today.’ And television is a very sensitive [thing].” What did you think of M.I.A.’s halftime flip-off? Let us know in the comments! ‘More than anything, we’re just excited that people are talking about the movie,’ writer Matthew Peterman tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Bonnie Morgan in “The Devil Inside” Photo: Paramount Director William Brent Bell and writer Matthew Peterman defied all expectations when their new film, “The Devil Inside,” broke January box-office records . The horror movie grossed $35 million domestically in its opening weekend for Paramount, whose parent company, Viacom, owns MTV. Since the film’s surprise success and subsequent controversy , Bell and Peterman have found themselves at the center of a lot of talk around Hollywood. The writer/director duo took time to speak with MTV News about the film, the audience reaction and the controversial ending. MTV : What has your week been like since the release? Matthew Peterman : It’s really exciting. It’s just exciting for the movie business that it reinvigorated the marketplace a little bit, so it’s nice to be a part of that to some degree. MTV : What were your expectations going into the release? Bell : When we made the film, we made it completely independently and outside the studio system. It was me, Matt [and] our producing partner Morris Paulson, who independently financed the film. We went off to Europe and shot the movie, came back here with it and just worked on it for about a year. We brought on Steven Schneider and Lorenzo di Bonaventura. We worked on it with them for a while and then presented it to Paramount. We had been working on the film since its first inception, over five years at that point, but a year and a half of actually shooting and editing and all the good stuff. Peterman : I think our expectations were to make the best film we could. Hopefully, everything else would just take care of itself. We didn’t have an idea that it would do anything like this. There were no expectations for that. MTV : What do you think of the audience reaction? Peterman : I think, more than anything, we’re just excited that people are talking about the movie. We know it’s a polarized audience. That’s kind of the cool thing that movies do, because we took a lot of chances. We kind of see it in the way people are talking about it. Bell : We’re just excited people are talking about it. We’re excited there are a lot of people who do like the movie. It is very interesting and cool to have a polarizing movie out there that people can get into the heat of discussion about. That’s actually interesting. The more people are interested, the better it is for the film. Peterman : It’s a lot better, man, than just putting a movie out there that’s just forgotten. We have our fair share of fans. We have our fair share of naysayers. It’s cool to see people getting into healthy discussion about a film. MTV : How different was your experience this time compared to your first film, the video game-themed horror movie “Stay Alive”? Bell : It was 180 degrees different. It kind of started off the same, but it very quickly changed. The budget was 10 times this, depending on how you look at it. We did it kind of independently but not really, because it had such a big budget. We shot in America with a huge union crew. It was a much more standard Hollywood kind of experience and one I didn’t enjoy very much. Peterman : There were huge companies involved in that film. “The Devil Inside” was a completely independent project in every sense of the word. We enjoyed “Devil Inside” much better. Bell : It was released by a studio that really didn’t understand those types of films. You know the typical story where you destroy the movie in editing and you turn it from an R-rated film to a PG-13 film, and the result is something really unsatisfying. This time, we got to do what we wanted to do, pretty much. MTV : What are you going to take away from “The Devil Inside”? Bell : We really love this. You can call it “found footage.” You can call it “mock-doc” or “faux-doc” or whatever, depending on how you tell the story. We love this whole space, because you can work with really talented people and aren’t beholden to a great deal of money and take more chances. There are only so many stories you can tell, so to be able to tell a story in a unique way, this kind of documentary style allows us to do that. We certainly want to continue down that path. It gives audiences something different. Peterman : It allows you to do unconventional things. We did those on “The Devil Inside” for sure. MTV : Is horror a genre you want to stay in? Bell : I think it will be for a while. We’ve written a lot of projects that we’ve set up at different studios that kind of span different genres. We have a project now that’s more of a straightforward thriller. It’s in the pipeline. Certainly the next project and maybe the next two projects will stay in that space. We have a really exciting horror project that we hope to be shooting really soon. It’s a real departure from this one, but then again, there are also some similarities, the techniques we’re using. [ Spoiler ahead! ] MTV : The film’s ending frustrated many moviegoers. What were your thoughts on the URL at the end of the film? Bell : That was something different. When that idea came up, we thought that could fit. It’s a very interactive concept. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Devil Inside.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
TLC’s latest reality show All-American Muslim, which follows the lives of contemporary U.S. Muslim households, is (not surprisingly) drawing criticism from many. But is it warranted? An upcoming episode focused on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and how the show’s cast members feel about them, ignited a firestorm of controversy. All-American Muslim Trailer The episode airs Sunday, but the series first attracted attention earlier this month when a conservative Christian group called on advertisers to boycott the series. Some critics call All-American Muslim “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.” Home improvement chain Lowe’s and travel planning site Kayak (dot) com announced they were pulling ads, which led to backlash against the companies. Filming for the controversial reality TV series took place during commemorations for the 10th anniversary of the attacks this September, heightening tensions. Both TLC and the Muslims it depicts, which live in and around Dearborn, Mich., wanted to address the topic. How do you think their message will be received?
‘I’ll definitely at least tune in to the first episode that he’s on, just to see … the kinds of critiques he gives,’ one viewer tells MTV News. By Brian Phares, with additional reporting by Uptin Saiidi Howard Stern Photo: FilmMagic NEW YORK — Howard Stern is coming to your TV — but not in the way you might expect. The controversial radio host is replacing Piers Morgan as the newest judge on “America’s Got Talent,” and the news definitely has people talking. “I feel like the families who are watching it are going to be like, ‘What is this guy doing on this show?’ ” Mike Ruffalo told MTV News when we took to the streets to find out what people were thinking about the controversial move. Other fans were not as concerned. “It’s great publicity for ‘America’s Got Talent,’ ” said Carol John. Indeed, the news has definitely drawn a lot of attention to the Nick Cannon-hosted competition show, but will that mean more viewers? “Howard Stern is a funny, crazy dude. I will definitely be in there watching it,” said Gabriel Garcia, proving that, for at least one fan, having Stern on the show is a major draw. John was interested but felt a little more trepidation when she told us, “I’ll definitely at least tune in to the first episode that he’s on, just to see how he approaches the show and the kinds of critiques he gives to the acts that perform.” Regardless of what people think about Howard Stern, the general consensus is that having him on “America’s Got Talent” is a great move for the show. But is it a great move for Howard? “Twenty million dollars could persuade a lot of people to do a lot of things,” Peter Papaemanuel pointed out. Amen, Peter. What do you think of the move? British comic stirred up controversy last year with his celeb-skewering one-liners and atheist sendoff. By Kevin P. Sullivan Ricky Gervais Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Weeks of debate have finally ended. On Wednesday (November 16), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided with a vote that British comedian Ricky Gervais will return to host the Golden Globes for the third time, according to Variety. Disagreement among the members of the HFPA and NBC, the network that broadcasts the television and film awards show, about whether the controversial host should return made headlines this week. NBC was Gervais’ most vocal proponent, but factions in the HFPA were uneasy about the “Office” creator after his no-holds-barred one-liners targeted some of Hollywood’s biggest names and he thanked God for being born an atheist. After the fallout from Gervais’ last turn as host of the Golden Globes , he told several sources that he no longer wished to host the show again . His feelings toward the job changed in recent months, when he became more vocal about wanting to return. He even went as far as suggesting that if he didn’t host, he would offer a live running commentary throughout the show. Once it was clear that talks of the comedian’s return were serious, Gervais came out to explain that the holdup was due to the HFPA’s indecision and that he had NBC’s full support. The Globes are not the only awards show with a hosting controversy. After Eddie Murphy stepped down as Oscars host , Gervais joked to Deadline that he would host both the Academy Awards and the Globes for a discounted price. La Toya Jackson is irate over the documentary featuring Dr. Conrad Murray to air on MSNBC. She’s demanding it be pulled out of respect for her brother Michael. The late pop singer’s sister says the controversial documentary, which will air tomorrow, essentially gives “a murderer and convicted felon … celebrity status.” Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, not murder, but MJ’s estate and fans are still understandably upset about the Conrad Murray documentary . La Toya fired off a letter to MSNBC, claiming it’s outrageous that Michael cannot defend himself against Murray’s claims, of which there are apparently many. Some of Murray’s comments about MJ in the film, taken during the run-up to his trial, which ended in a guilty verdict earlier this week, are extremely critical. La Toya says Murray will profit from “homicidal acts that left my family without a brother, my niece and nephews without a father, my parents without a son …” La Toya wants the network to shelve it, but MSNBC has no plans to, and insists that Dr. Conrad Murray’s legal team didn’t get any money, directly or indirectly. There are reports out today that MSNBC funded Murray’s legal defense in return for the rights to air the documentary, but TMZ sources say that is simply untrue. In fact, Murray’s lead attorney Ed Chernoff is about to leave the case – possibly even before an appeal is filed – because the Murray case almost put him under. Murray reportedly got $1 for his participation in the documentary, but there could be loopholes, such as a side deal to give him share in profits from the show. La Toya can be heard cheering the verdict below. Classy. Dr. Conrad Murray Verdict Reading
