Diddy Chooses His Favorite Track From B.I.G.’s Life After Death

‘People are buying that album every day. It’s a classic album,’ Diddy tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Diddy The Notorious B.I.G. had high hopes for his second LP, Life After Death. “I want people to buy [my new] album and just straight up say, ‘Yo, he’s the best. He’s the best ever. He’s the best that ever did it,’ ” Biggie said in a 1997 Source magazine interview before he was murdered on March 9, 1997. Big never got to see the public’s reaction to his 24-track, double-disc masterpiece — it was released on March 25, 16 days after his death. Fifteen years and 10 million copies later, there is no denying the power of LAD. Biggie mixed inescapable singles like “Hypnotize,” “Mo Money, Mo Problems” and “Sky’s the Limit” with dark and brooding underground classics like “Ten Crack Commandments” and the DJ Premier-produced “Kick in the Door.” Everyone has their favorites, even the Notorious B.I.G.’s friend and Bad Boy CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs. “Aww man, Life After Death ? It would probably have to be …,” Diddy responded when Sway asked him to pick his #1 LAD track while the two were on the set of a Miami video shoot in January. ” ‘My Downfall,’ ‘My Downfall’ is my favorite joint.” The Hitmen-produced track is a gut-wrenching display of Brooklyn bravado. “My Downfall” is prefaced by a skit in which Biggie receives death threats over the phone, exemplifying the type of resentment that Big’s success brought out in his detractors. With rap legend DMC on the song’s hook and Diddy adding fiery ad libs, B.I.G. eerily pondered his own death. “Dying ain’t the sh–, but it’s pleasant,” he rapped as if he were foretelling his own fate. It was a theme that was revisited quite a few times on the classic rap LP, particularly on the album-closing “You’re Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You).” For the album’s 15-year anniversary, Diddy said he is planning to release a remastered version of Life After Death, but beyond that, not much else. “We basically gonna let it rock, we have promoted it, promoted his legacy through movies, documentaries, albums, remixed albums, new albums and now it’s time for the fans to have it,” he said. “On the 15th anniversary, we’ll definitely make sure that there is a remastered copy out there, but besides that we’re not gonna do anything extra to extra push it. People are buying that album every day. It’s a classic album and they’re gonna keep on buying it.” A representative from Bad Boy Records told MTV News that at press time there was no Life After Death remastered LP on the label’s release schedule. ‘Game Change’: The Reviews Are In!

Julianne Moore and Woody Harrelson carry HBO’s Sarah Palin-centered tale of the 2008 election, premiering at 9 p.m. Saturday. By Eric Ditzian Julianne Moore and Ed Harris in “Game Change” Photo: HBO Films Before I checked out “Game Change,” HBO’s Sarah Palin-focused retelling of the 2008 presidential election, I handed my screener over to a politically obsessed MTV News colleague. The next morning, he popped into my office and declared, “It was well-acted!” — which seemed like an odd way to lead off the conversation. I expected him to burst through my door, laughing about what a kook Palin is, or wondering why producers didn’t get Tina Fey to play the one-time vice presidential nominee, or waxing poetic about the “hopey, changey” circus that was Barack Obama’s romp through the general election. But, no: well-acted. When I stretched out on the couch for my own viewing a few days later, I finally grasped what my coworker was getting at: The performances in “Game Change” are what separate the film from fluffy caricature or partisan hackery into a compelling, if debatably accurate, piece of current event-tinged pop culture. Julianne Moore manages to present a Palin that transcends mimicry and leaves a viewer (or, at least, this viewer) vacillating between sympathy and exasperation. As chief John McCain campaign advisor Steve Schmidt, Woody Harrelson simply kicks ass, doling out sage advice and f-bomb-heavy attacks with equal aplomb — exactly how I imagine political insiders do it in real life (or, perhaps, just on “The West Wing”). Of the major players, only Ed Harris’ portrayal of McCain himself comes off as a little too much of an “SNL” imitation, his robotic physicality less reminiscent of the Arizona senator than of C-3PO. Nonetheless, all this combines to make “Game Change,” in the best tradition of historical dramas, a tense affair as you sit waiting to find out how it all will end, even as you know exactly what in fact transpired. That’s not to say this film is high art, or even particularly great: It’s not, and it isn’t. Problems abound — from hokey, no-one-honestly-utters-such-patriotic-nonsense dialogue to the enduring question about veracity — but in the end, “Game Change” is gripping throughout, because it’s “well-acted.” Many reviewers agree with that sentiment — though not all. Here’s what critics are saying about the HBO film, which premieres at 9 p.m. Saturday: The Performances “McCain comes off close to saintly, with Harris lending him a grave bafflement over Obama’s success. … Harrelson portrays Schmidt as a man who truly believes that all McCain needs to push him to victory is a little sizzle. … The film, obviously, belongs to Moore, who works hard to make Palin not so much fatally ambitious as one of those naturally confident people who believe that confidence and faith are the most important ingredients of success; ability or even competence can be learned on the job.” — Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times The Spin From the Right “Moore portrays Palin as a Manchurian Candidate for the extreme right who is activated by a phone call from the McCain campaign. Like a hypnotized spy, she’s humorless, incapable of any kind of emotional connection with anyone, bewildered by circumstance and absolutely determined to meet the goal she’s been programmed to complete. … [W]hat HBO and company have done is to bring to life that which justifies the darkest part of their own incapacity to see the humanity in those who might threaten the reelection of Barack Obama.” — John Nolte, Big Hollywood The Spin From the Left “Sarah Palin has everything to lose and precisely nothing to gain from depictions that point her, as ‘Game Change’ does at various point, as an overzealous evangelical Christian. … And those of us who dislike Palin have everything to gain by recognizing that we really, truly won: Palin’s gone from the national stage. … We should accept that, be done with the victory dance, and get down to examining the next generation of plausible Republican rising stars. The greatest damage we could do to Sarah Palin — and one of the better things we could do for ourselves — is to move on from her, totally and irrevocably.” — Alyssa Rosenberg, Think Progress The Final Word “[T]he movie is better than you’ve heard but not good enough to linger in the mind. I wish it had been more of a black comedy and less of a political-psychological case study. Confronted with this level of genial stupidity and accidental madness, only satire can do history justice. Sarah Palin herself is a triumph of style and a failure of substance; ‘Game Change,’ the reverse.” — Matt Zoller Seitz, New York ‘s Vulture.com For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Does Britney Spears Have ‘The X Factor’?

MTV News takes a look at the pros and cons of bringing Spears onboard as a judge for the reality singing competition. By John Mitchell Britney Spears Photo: MTV News The news that Britney Spears is reportedly in final negotiations to join “The X Factor” has set the MTV Newsroom on fire. Opinion on whether the pop star is a good fit for the reality singing competition has been sharply divided, so we decided to take on the topic the way we’re sure Simon Cowell did before making Spears a reported $10 million offer: a good, old-fashioned pros and cons list. Pro: She’ll attract viewers The debut season of “The X Factor” performed well below expectations. Its heavily hyped premiere pulled in 12.1 million total viewers and a meager 4.4/12 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 demographic. That’s about half of what the 2011 season of “American Idol” averaged (“Idol” is having its own ratings woes this season), and it didn’t even win the night: Emmy-winning sitcom “Modern Family” drew 14.3 million viewers and a 6.0/15 for its season premiere. The poor ratings precipitated the overhaul that saw judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones fired from the show. There’s no question that Spears would bring viewers to “The X Factor.” She enjoys a large and devout fanbase who will basically follow her just about anywhere. And beyond her own fans, Spears’ celebrity would also likely draw attention from the general public, who will tune in simply to see how she does. Con: She’s become nervous on camera Though she can still wow a crowd live in concert, as evidenced by last year’s successful tour behind her hit album Femme Fatale, Spears has become increasingly tentative during interviews. She rarely grants on-camera sit-downs, and when she does, she seems nervous and uncomfortable. To be a strong judge or mentor on a reality show, you have to be very comfortable on camera. Part of what made Jennifer Lopez click last season on “Idol” was the she came across as confident, direct and often empathetic. She even broke down in tears after sending home contestant Chris Medina , whose fianc

Notorious B.I.G. Would Have Worked With Kanye West, Lil’ Kim Says

‘He would’ve liked his determination,’ Kim tells Sway on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images Few people knew the Notorious B.I.G. like . The two shared a friendship, a working relationship and a romance, but when the Queen Bee sat down with Sway on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” she simply described herself as Biggie’s “biggest fan.” “I was his biggest fan, rockin’ with him. And I was shorty, I was his pride and joy. Sometimes he would say to me, ‘I feel like you’re my baby, like I birthed you,’ ” Kim said, laughing. With a bond that intimate, there are few people more qualified than Kim to speculate on whom the Brooklyn Don might have collaborated with had he not died on that fateful March night . It’s a question that fans have pondered for the past 15 years . “I think Kayne — I think he would’ve liked his determination because one thing I know about Kanye is when he wants something he will get on your nerves,” Kim speculated. Though Frank White enlisted Mobb Deep’s Havoc to produce “Last Day,” he never had a proper collaboration with the Queens duo. Kim thinks he would have liked that. “I know he was a big Mobb Deep fan. He liked Wu-Tang’s music, I’ll tell you, he liked their music despite all the craziness,” she said, alluding to the feud that existed between Big and members of the Clan. Still, Kim maintains that Biggie’s favorite was Hov. “He and Jay-Z just had this adorable friendship — it was the cutest,” she said. “They were so competitive with each other, but it was such a friendly competitiveness, and I loved it because that’s how it’s supposed to be when you like somebody.” Lil’ Kim says that she feels blessed to be connected to the late rap great. “Sometimes I still don’t believe I was part of that era,” she admitted. As their interview drew to a close, Sway posed a poignant final question: If there were anything you could say to Big right now, what would it be? “I would say he did a good job, he did a good job. He should be proud of himself. He should be very proud,” Kim replied. “He did some good things when he was here, I hope he looks at me and he’s proud. He should be proud of the kids he made and how they turned out. He should just be proud of his work … that he left here on earth.” Join MTV News as we celebrate the Notorious B.I.G’s life on the 15th anniversary of his death. Britney Spears Offered $10 Million To Join ‘X Factor’

Contract could be signed as early as next week. Gotye Getting Back To Fundamentals For Musical March Madness

Can the up-and-coming singer shock the world and win MMM? We’ll find out when the tournament tips off Monday. By James Montgomery Gotye Photo: MTV News / Getty Images Gotye has already made huge strides in the U.S. thanks to the crossover success of his hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” but now he’s looking to truly cement his status as a Stateside sensation … by winning MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. The third-annual MMM tips off Monday, and if the Belgian-born, Australian-bred singer/songwriter is really going to best 63 other acts — including defending champs Green Day, heavyweights like the Black Keys and Ke$ha , and up-and-comers Fun. — to hoist the big gold trophy, well, he’s definitely got his work cut out for him. So it’s a good thing that he’s been working hard on the fundamentals … like the art of the well-placed screen. “To win, it’s going to be all about screening. Screening is the key, people,” he explained. “A lot of people in bands don’t realize what it’s all about, but you’ve got to screen people, to keep your vocalists at center. It’s all about focus and screening, back and forth, not a lot of people know that.” Ah, the screen: Catalyst behind the pick-and-roll … the old “picket fence” play … basketball building blocks, people. It’s the same time-honored skill Roger Waters used to take home the 1973 Musical March Madness tourney (note: not actually true), and one that Gotye hopes to employ to maximum success in this year’s big dance. “Roger Waters and his ‘walls,’ he set a lot of hard screens with lots of blocks,” he laughed. “If you’ve got a 10-piece band, keep your main player away from the play, and then at the right moment, just screen the whole audience away, so just one person gets that special look. That’s what it’s all about.” Actually, winning is what it’s all about. Can Gotye shock the world and reign supreme in MMM 2012? We’ll just have to see when the tournament gets under way on Monday! MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament begins on Monday, March 12, when we’ll unveil the full field of 64 bands that will battle for this year’s championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM … but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Artists Gotye

Notorious B.I.G.’s Life Celebrated On 15th Anniversary Of His Death

Hip-hop icon was fatally gunned down 15 years ago today at age 24. By Rob Markman Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images March 9, 1997: There was absolutely nothing that could have prepared hip-hop fans for the tragic event that took place on that grim day. Then again, there was not much warning when the Notorious B.I.G. entered the hip-hop world either. Sure, there were key cameos on records with Mary J. Blige and reggae star Super Cat, but when all was said and done and B.I.G. was gunned down 15 years ago today , it became clear that rap had lost one of the great ones — perhaps the greatest one of all time. In the beginning, Biggie Smalls wasn’t even the most prominent star on his label. That position was occupied by rapper Craig Mack, whose 1994 hit single “Flava in Ya Ear” initially set the mark of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ newly minted Bad Boy Records. B.I.G. was a respected lyricist, a raw rapper who at first seemed unlikely to make a mark on radio. In fact, one of his earliest singles, “Just Playing (Dreams),” poked fun at some of music’s biggest hitmakers like Mariah Carey and Patti LaBelle. Then, on September 13, 1994, things done changed. On his debut album, Ready to Die, Biggie would find an exceptional balance between the unapologetic street rhymes for which he was heralded and a newfound sense of the type of pop sensibility that radio programmers love. On “Gimme the Loot,” he threatened to rob a pregnant woman for her jewelry and then managed to sweet-talk the ladies on “Big Poppa.” On his “One More Chance” remix, Big described himself as “black and ugly as ever,” and though he didn’t possess the physique of an LL Cool J, Biggie’s charm made him an unlikely sex symbol. Ready to Die would go on to be certified platinum four times over by the RIAA, but between the bootleg copies and albums sold in largely unaccounted for mom-and-pop shops, its impact was much greater. Rappers like Jay-Z, Nas and Eminem readily admit the influence that Big’s opus had on their own art. Before dropping his second album, Biggie would branch out and start his own label with partner Lance “Un” Rivera and release an album from his group Junior M.A.F.I.A. in 1995. His sexy prot

Whitney Houston Offered Lil’ Kim Her Bodyguard

On ‘RapFix Live,’ Kim recalls when late pop diva offered her protection from a stalker: ‘She was so sweet about it.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil’ Kim Photo: Uptin Saiidi / MTV News Lil’ Kim has stories for days. On Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” the Queen Bee buzzed about her career, the things she’s done and the people she’s met. When a fan asked about Whitney Houston , a bright smile came upon Kim’s face and the memories came flooding. “Oh my goodness, I absolutely adored and loved Whitney Houston,” Kim gushed about the late icon. Turns out, at one time, Kim and Houston shared something in common — crazed stalkers. Once Houston learned of an obsessed fan who would leave creepy gifts at Kim’s doorstep, “The Bodyguard” actress offered her own personal bodyguard to help protect the female rapper. “Whitney Houston called me, and she was like, ‘Kim, I will send my guy, because remember when that stalker was in my house?’ ” Kim said, reenacting the conversation with her best Whitney impression. “She was so sweet about it,” Kim remembered. That wasn’t the only time the Hardcore MC and the pop diva bonded. Kim also recalled a time that she ended up on the same flight with Houston and her then-husband Bobby Brown. Surprised to see the femcee, Brown suggested Houston sit next to Kim so they could have a bit of girl talk. Kim excitedly agreed, but Whitney wasn’t in the mood for much conversation — or so she said: “She was like, ‘Girl, I’m not much of a talker,’ ” Kim recalled. “In my mind, I’m like, ‘This is Whitney. I don’t care, she can still sit there. I’ll just look at her.’ ” Kim’s dog Diamond was the icebreaker, however, and after Houston sat the pooch on her lap, she began to open up. Seems like Whitney was in the mood for some girl talk after all. “By the time we got in the air and they were getting ready to serve dinner, she had talked me to sleep,” Kim said, laughing. “She was so down to earth, so beautiful.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Welcomes Back Lil’ Kim Related Photos Whitney Houston: A Life In Photos Related Artists Whitney Houston
