Roscoe Dash Brings The ‘Awesome’ To Hottest Breakthrough Race

Atlanta MC builds on ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ momentum to land a spot on our list — vote now! By Steven Roberts Roscoe Dash Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News It’s hard to believe Roscoe Dash has yet to put out an album. “All the Way Turnt Up” was such a big record last year that hip-hop fans didn’t even think it was his. With Dash being a relative unknown — even within Atlanta’s unique hip-hop scene — people thought the record was by 2010 Hottest Breakthrough MC nominees Travis Porter . But once that was cleared up, everyone from Lil Wayne to Lupe Fiasco was ready to spit over the beat. Dash’s next single, “Show Out,” was a solid effort, but it wasn’t nearly as successful as “Turnt Up.” It looked like Dash might’ve succumbed to one-hit wonder status. But then Roscoe turned up (get it?) on one of 2010’s most overlooked songs, Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands.” The song cemented Flocka as a viable mainstream artist, lent Wale a much-needed lifeline and established a market for Mr. R-O-S-C-O-E as a hook man — and helped land him on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs list. Dash’s raspy drawl would appear on DJ Drama’s “Oh My” with Fabulous and Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean’s “Marvin and Chardonnay” with Kanye West. These songs have helped bring about a second wave of interest in Dash. He recently dropped the videos for “Awesome” and “Good, Good Night.” Both songs are featured on his EP, J.U.I.C.E (Just Understand I Control Everything), which is set to drop later on this month. “Music is something I just never stopped doing, especially in high school,” Dash told MTV News. “I remember staying up burning CDs one by one every night until I had, like, 300 CDs, stuffing them in a backpack and going to school the next day, passing them out. “The biggest lesson that I’ve learned coming up is that your fans are going to be the most important people that you come in contact with,” he added. “They’re going to life you up whenever you don’t have the hottest song. They’re just going to rock with you for you.” Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Roscoe (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude Tuesday (December 13) when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Who do you think should be 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC? Share your picks in the comments! Stick with MTV News as we profile the 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs before announcing the winner Wednesday on “RapFix Live” — vote now! Will ‘Star Trek’ Sequel Include Khan?

Actor Simon Pegg and producer Bryan Burk talk to MTV News about the infamous villain and other details. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz J.J. Abrams and the cast of “Star Trek” Photo: Zade Rosenthal The dedicated fan following of J.J. Abrams knows that the talented writer/director is great at keeping secrets — particularly when those secrets revolve around the highly anticipated and heavily guarded “Star Trek” sequel. And while a few details have started to emerge about the 2013 release, including cast additions ( like Alice Eve ) and villain speculation, we don’t know much. When MTV News caught up with Simon Pegg and producer Bryan Burk when they were promoting “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” we asked what they know so far and if they’d seen or heard any official talk about Khan, the rumored fan-favorite villain. Pegg swore he doesn’t know anything about new characters that have joined the story, but he does know that his Scotty will have a particularly creative sex scene. “There is a large group sex scene with Scotty and some green chicks. That’s all I know; that’s all I’ve been told. It was a sweetener,” he joked. “That was my condition for doing the film.” While Pegg assured us that what he had read of the script is, in fact, really “good,” he knows nothing about Khan. “I haven’t heard the name Khan come up. Not to say it won’t come up, but I have heard no mention of him whatsoever,” he said. “He is a great villain. I don’t want to say too much and then have to eat my words as I often do, but we’ve seen Khan [in a ‘Trek’ movie before]. To see him again, how much value is there in that? I don’t know.” Burk was equally coy about the superhuman tyrant’s place in “Trek 2.” “There are amazing villains all throughout the ‘Star Trek’ universe as well as new villains,” he said when asked for his thoughts on whether Khan belongs in the new film. “As we did in the last film, there’s a lot of directions you can go with the film. In this case, we chose to do something we thought would be original and unique and different, and I think on paper, we made the right choice. Now we have to go shoot.” Burk also promised that the second film will pick up where things left off. “Unlike the last film, where we were restarting and setting up the characters … we’re going to jump right back in, and we don’t have to set up everybody and we can go right in it,” he explained. “We’re kind of in a mad dash at the beginning of the film. In all of our conversation, we reference a lot of our favorite films and how ‘Empire Strikes Back’ was spectacular and how they were able to pick up and keep going.” Abrams’ “Star Trek” sequel starts shooting in 3-D in January and is scheduled to be released May 17, 2013. Byron Katie: Question Your Thoughts and End Your Suffering

My name is Jasmin Alvarez. I’m fifteen, and I’m…

My name is Jasmin Alvarez. I’m fifteen, and I’m blind. Before I write anything about my experience, I would like to say that Justin Bieber is an incredible inspiration. He is a person worth meeting. An individual with a beautiful heart. A person that truly cares for his believers. It was back in 2009 when I heard Justin singing for the first time. I remember this day like if it were yesterday. I had just come back from school, and was loaded with tons of work, when I turned on the radio. I heard this amazing song begin to play. Ever since that moment when I heard that song, I felt like I just needed to know whom this person with such a cute little voice, was . I remember that day, after hearing the song, I called my friend, and asked her if she had heard it before. Then, that’s when I found out about Justin Bieber, who was fifteen at the time. Ever since that moment when I first heard him singing ONE TIME, I remember saying, I have to meet this person. He is amazing. Even though, I can’t see him, that didn’t matter to me, because looks are not important. They don’t determine who you are. The only thing that truly determines you as a person is your personality, and the things you do for others. So, I decided to begin my journey in trying to meet him. I knew that what I wanted wasn’t going to be easy, because I knew I was one out of millions of girls who wished the same thing, but I somehow knew that there might be a way of making my dream come true. I spent a long time trying, and trying, and writing endless emails and letters to radio stations, even though I knew at the time I had absolutely no way of standing out. Then, all of a sudden I got inspired, and wrote a song to Justin, called “IF YOU ONLY KNEW”, and I put it on Youtube. (Click here to watch)  Things went well with the song, and my three amazing supporters from at @biebsmeetjasmin helped me spread my word to as many people as possible, and tried almost everything, to see if my words could get to Justin. It was hard sometimes, because I thought that no matter what I did, my words would never get to him, but then I thought of Justin’s saying to “NEVER SAY NEVER”, and that’s what helped me put those thoughts aside . Then, on July 9th, 2011, with the help of my amazing supporters, I trended on twitter for the first time . I was able to trend for about seven hours, and during that time, I got many more supporters. I remember everyone started to tweet and tweet Scooter and Justin about me. It was just crazy. I couldn’t even believe it. After about five hours or so of me trending, my friend tells me to check twitter, because Scooter tweeted about me . I started freaking out. I couldn’t even check twitter. I was trembling. When I was able to calm down, I saw his tweet. He said that he knew about me since I first put my video on youtube . That was one of the happiest days of my life. He also followed me on twitter. It was all so amazing, but I knew I couldn’t stop. I had to keep going, until I had Justin face to face. So, I continued trying, and “NEVER SAYING NEVER”. Then, on October 5th, I had the privilege of being followed by Justin Bieber himself. Words can’t say the way I felt. I was just so overjoyed, so full of happiness, I couldn’t believe it. The funny thing was, I ended up finding out that he followed me about three days later, but its ok, just the fact that he followed me, that was the best thing that happened to me. A few weeks later, I found out that Justin was going to be in a morning show , at a radio station. So, the day before, I wrote a letter to one of the staff from the morning show, and asked him if it was possible that I would be able to have a few words with Justin through the phone, and he made it happen. I can’t thank the morning show enough for giving me that chance. Talking to him on the phone was the most amazing thing. He was just so sweet to me, and in the small moment that we talked, I told him everything I felt. I asked him if he knew who I was. I told him I was Jasmin Alvarez. I was the girl that wrote a song for him. He told me that he did know who I was. He told me that he had seen my video, and that he loved the way I sang, and played piano . I was just so happy; I couldn’t hold back the tears. I couldn’t believe that every word I was saying, he was listening. I told him that since that moment when I first heard him sing, the only thing that I dreamed of doing was meeting him. I told him that I was never going to give up. At the end of our conversation, he asked me where I lived. I told him Florida. He told me that he was going to be coming down to Florida soon, because he had to do something for Disney. He said that he was going to see if something could be done, so that when he came down to Florida, we could meet. When I hung up with him, I didn’t even know what to do. I just couldn’t believe that I had actually spoken to Justin Bieber. That after so long, this very special person whom I’ve wanted to meet with all my heart, actually knew who I was, and told me that there would be a chance of us meeting. Nothing else could compare to the happiness that I was feeling in that very moment. (You can listen to me on z100 with Justin here  at 11:29)   Last Thursday, I found out that Justin Bieber was already here in Florida. On Friday, December 2, 2011, I decided to write a letter to Scooter. In my letter, I told him everything. Everything that I felt, and what it would mean to me, if he could make this possible. I woke up that day at 5 in the morning, and started writing my letter. I sent it around 12 p.m. It was incredible that in the moment that I sent it, so many people started sending it to Scooter and Justin. I stayed very positive, and I somehow had a feeling this was going to happen, and it did. A few hours later, I get a call from a strange number. So, I picked up the phone, and it was Kenny Hamilton. I was so nervous; I didn’t even know what to say. He asked if he could speak to a parent, so I put him on the phone with my dad. He asked us if we would be able to go to his performance in Disney the next day. We said yes. Then, he called us back and told us to be ready that in about an hour we were going to get picked up, go to Orlando stay in a hotel, and the next day, go and meet Justin! We had to pack everything fast, to be ready in an hour. About an hour later, the car got to our house, and picked us up. We drove for about three hours to Orlando. We staid the night, and woke up bright and early the next day. Now, this is the part that I wanted to get to. The part of when I met Justin . We got to the park early in the morning. Before I was taken backstage, I met Kenny. He was so sweet. He came up to me and gave me a hug. He told me he loved my voice. He was amazing. So, we were taken backstage to a room, my mom, dad, and I. I couldn’t believe what I was about to do. I felt so happy and so nervous it was just crazy. So many emotions went through me, as I waited. About fifteen minutes later, Alfredo comes in. I met him. He was amazing too. He told me not to be nervous, that Justin was excited to meet me. A few minutes later, as I sat and waited, that’s when I heard him. He said, Hi Jasmin, how are you? I stood up, and heard him get closer to me. When I felt he was right there, I reached out to him, and we both hugged. It was just amazing! I told him that I couldn’t believe I was actually meeting him. In that short moment that HIM & I were together, everything just felt right. I had finally met this person that has touched my heart, and my life in such a way. I was so nervous. I thought I was going to shut down, and not be able to say anything, but thank god that didn’t happen. He kept the conversation going, so it was just awesome! We took a few pictures together. This is the part that mostly touched me. The part that actually made me see just how amazing and caring he is. Almost at the end of our conversation, he asks me if I had any idea of what he looked like. I said no. Then, he asks me if I wanted to feel his face. I said yes, and he took my hands and put them on his face. So, I was able to feel his hair, and it was very nice and soft. I could tell he was smiling when I touched his face. I also met Scooter, and he was just as amazing as Justin. We spoke for a little too. Then, Justin gave me one last hug, and left. Then, I asked Scooter if I could hug him, and he said yes, so I hugged him. After that, I was taken outside, and I was able to be part of Justin’s amazing performance. He sang beautiful. This has been the most amazing thing that has ever happened in my life, and no matter what, I will never forget this. I don’t have words to thank Scooter, and Justin for making this possible. I’m so grateful. This has really meant the world to me. All I can say is that DREAMS DO COME TRUE . If you believe in them, and you have faith, anything is possible. Just Believe, stay positive, and most of all, NEVER SAY NEVER! -Jasmin Alvarez (@JasminAlvarez1) Originally posted here: My name is Jasmin Alvarez. I’m fifteen, and I’m…

Jonah Hill To Sit Down For ‘MTV First: The Sitter’

Hill will introduce an exclusive clip from the babysitting caper before a 30-minute chat Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian Jonah Hill in “The Sitter” Photo: 20th Century Fox Our first extended opportunity to chat with Jonah Hill came in the summer of 2005, when we met up with the then largely unknown actor and his co-star Justin Long on the set of “Accepted.” “I wouldn’t say we’re the next Farley and Spade,” Hill told MTV News of his onscreen collaboration with Long. “I would say we’re the next Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna.” And so the comedic gauntlet was thrown down. Hill has been making us laugh ever since, cracking us up during interviews and bringing the funny in “Superbad,” “Cyrus,” “Get Him to the Greek” and many more. To celebrate his latest, “The Sitter,” and because we just have such a good time talking with Hill, we’re very proud to announce “MTV First: The Sitter,” an exclusive sit-down with the actor. On Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV, Hill and MTV News’ Josh Horowitz will take over the airwaves, where they’ll introduce a previously unseen clip from the film and chat for a bit before continuing the conversation online for a full 30 minutes. Directed by David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express”), Hill stars in the new movie as a reluctant babysitter who takes three kids into New York City because he’d rather meet up with his girlfriend than stay stuck in the suburbs. Not such a wise decision, as it turns out drug deals, car crashes and general debauchery take hilarious precedence over more mundane babysitting activities. The movie also stars Max Records, Ari Graynor, Method Man , JB Smoove and Sam Rockwell. During the “MTV First,” we’ll not only talk about “The Sitter,” but also have Jonah analyze some of the best cinematic babysitters in history, answer your Twitter questions and dish on the very latest news about Hill’s upcoming adaptation of “21 Jump Street.” Join Jonah Hill for “MTV First: The Sitter” on Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV! Kreayshawn Addresses Gangsta Boo’s ‘RapFix’ Jabs

White Girl Mob MC tells us the femcees ‘worked everything out,’ adding that Boo ‘inspired me to rap.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kreayshawn Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage On Wednesday, Tennessee rapper Gangsta Boo stopped by “RapFix Live” and addressed the current state of the female MC, noting that she hoped everyone could learn to work together. But she had less than kind words for one MC in particular, Kreayshawn . During the conversation, Gangsta Boo likened the “Gucci Gucci” rapper to a “wigger” and told “RFL” host Sway that the up-and-comer reminds her of a character from the 1997 Halle Berry comedy “B.A.P.S.” Although she gave respect to Kreayshawn, the Three 6 Mafiia co-founder said she was concerned about Kreay’s “ghetto” image. Shortly after Boo’s appearance on the live stream, Kreayshawn took to Twitter , sending out a few mysterious tweets that many fans took as a dig at the rapper. “Hahahah lonely hungry bitch don’t deserve a mention. my local news caster got more followers then on you. Go play with ya kids hoe!” She followed that up with another tweet : “Hope them shirts you selling at least paying your rent! Happy I can contribute.” The tweets seemed to be a reaction to Gangsta Boo , who showed off her shirt on Wednesday’s show. On Friday (October 28), Kreayshawn was back on Twitter clearing the air , with a tweet to the Memphis MC.” @GangstaBooQOM I wasn’t talkin bout you. You know how the media be. Shit you was one my fav. female rappers! You can say what you want,” she wrote. Kreay insisted those tweets weren’t directed at Gangsta Boo when MTV News spoke to her on Friday afternoon. “I was just like kind of shocked because I’m a fan of Gangsta Boo and as a female, she was one of the females in the game that inspired me to rap,” she said of the comments made about her on “RapFix Live.” When I heard it I was like, ‘What? Gangsta Boo? This sucks.’ To hear that from somebody that inspired me. [The tweets] didn’t even have anything to do with her. I already spoke to her about it,” the Bay Area MC added. “The thing I tweeted wasn’t even about her. It was on some whole other person. We ended up talking to each other. … We worked everything out. There ain’t no problems.” Gangsta Boo also let her fans know any beef has been settled. “PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE STOP ALL THIS KREAYSHWAN AND BOO S— GOOD GOD HOW BOUT THEM BRAVES???? ITS NO BEEF FOR CHRIST SAKES. Just got off the phone w/ @KREAYSHAWN & I DID snap a lil bit in interviews but she took it like a G & she Luvs BAPS & she is not a ‘wiggy,’ ” she tweeted . “New respect 4 her because she did not take it to heart & she got at me letting me know she was not talking abt me so HEY MEDIA 🙂 BYE MEDIA,” Lady Boo added. Now that the two performers have smoothed things over, Kreayshawn said she totally respects Boo’s opinion. “From the outside looking in, everyone has the option to their own opinion,” she said. “That’s why I wasn’t mad at her. I was just like, ‘Oh, this sucks.’ She can have her opinion, but we talked about it and it’s all good.” What did you think of Gangsta Boo’s comments about Kreayshawn? Tell us in the comments. Mobb Deep Up For Jay-Z Collabo, Despite Past Beef

‘It’s just hip-hop, man,’ Prodigy tells MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Havoc and Prodigy of Mobb Deep Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Time heals all wounds. After Jay-Z and Mobb Deep squared off lyrically in 2001, it was hard to imagine that the rap titans would ever get to a place where they would even consider a collaboration. Nothing is in the works, but after working with Roc Nation’s Jay Electronica , Mobb Deep told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway that they’d be open to the idea of working with Hov. “Tell [ Jay-Z ] to get in the studio,” Prodigy said when he and his partner Havoc appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “He gotta come to Infamous Studios in Queens, though.” Though the two acts threw quite a few barbs at each other, most notably on Jay-Z’s “Takeover” and Mobb Deep’s “Crawlin’ ” 10 years ago, Prodigy was recently featured on a track with Hov’s signee Jay Electronica on his “Call of Duty” track. On the song’s hook, Prodigy even spits, “Put your diamonds in the sky, wave ’em side to side/ Get juxed for your shine,” a double-sided lyric that evokes the spirit of a robbery and makes a play on Jay’s diamond-shaped hand gesture that he throws up at all his shows. Mobb Deep even recorded the song at Jigga’s Roc Da Mic studios in Manhattan; they clearly harbor no ill will. After Electronica attempted to reach Prodigy on Twitter, the Queens MC got the word that the Hov prot

My best friend Allie and I are HUGE fans of Justin Bieber! We live in  Los Angeles  so when we heard he was going to be on Ellen (which films in Burbank) we HAD to get tickets. Most people who go to Ellen reserve their tickets months in advance. My brother told me on SuperBowl Sunday that Justin would be on Ellen the following Wednesday, but since it tapes the day before they air, we knew we didn’t have much time to try and get tickets. We emailed Ellen that day and begged for tickets. By  Monday night  we still had not heard anything but we weren’t giving up hope. Ellen has a phone number that SoCal residents can call for last minute tickets the day of the taping. We called that morning and they said they would call us back if they had extra. In the meantime, Allie and I were at school. We came up with a plan to just drive down to  Burbank  and see what would happen. Even if we saw a glimpse of Justin, we would have been esthetic. We got down to the Ellen studio and got dropped off. We walked up towards the holding area for the Ellen Show and we saw a security guard. We asked her where we should go to see if we could get tickets. She directed us to a small podium where the producers were. We walked up to them and asked if we could by any chance get tickets. They asked who we were there to see and we said, “Justin Bieber!!!” and they said, “Hold on we’ll see what we can do.” We waited for about 5 minutes and they gave us tickets! We were in shock! We got into the studio and they sat us with other Bieber fans who we talked to in line and made friends with. The show began and when Justin came out, we screamed SO loud. He came over and said hi and touched our hands and I grabbed his hand twice. The second time I grabbed it, he winked at me! I wanted to DIE!  The show was close to wrapping and our day was starting to end, when Ellen said she had a surprise for Justin! It was a golf cart and Usher was the one who drove it out onto the set! We went nuts and Justin had NO idea. Ellen chatted with them about the premiere of ‘NEVER SAY NEVER’ which was that night. Then Usher stopped the conversation and asked the audience, “DO YOU GUYS WANNA GO TO THE PREMIERE?!” WE WERE GOING TO THE PREMIERE OF NEVER SAY NEVER! We couldn’t believe it! We got loaded onto buses and went to Nokia Theater and saw the movie. We got purple glasses and limited edition posters. We saw a bunch of celebrities including Selena Gomez, Will Smith and Miley Cyrus. The movie was awesome and seeing it in the same room as Justin was surreal! Zachary Quinto ‘Grateful’ For Support After Coming Out

‘Star Trek’ actor tells MTV News the response has been ‘enormously supportive — universally, unanimously supportive.’ By Eric Ditzian Zachary Quinto Photo: MTV News Since Zachary Quinto pronounced himself a “gay man” in a New York magazine interview and then took to his blog to pen an explanation about his decision to come out, the “Star Trek” actor has been overwhelmed by the positive response across the Web. “It’s been enormously supportive — universally, unanimously supportive,” he told MTV News on Monday morning (October 17) while promoting his Wall Street drama “Margin Call.” “I’m really grateful for that.” Quinto explained that the recent suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a young teen who was the victim of gay bullying, made him realize that he could no longer live a gay life without acknowledging in public that he was, in fact, gay. From the timelines of Twitter to the comments section on his blog, the response to his announcement has been supportive. “I admire your courage for looking inside yourself and realizing what kind of real power you have for making a difference,” one commenter on his blog wrote. While the actor has been an outspoken advocate on gay issues in the past, recording an “It Gets Better” video last fall, Quinto told us he’s now looking forward to diving more fully into the ever-evolving conversation about teen sexuality and bullying. “I feel like I made that declaration so that I can be a part of this conversation moving forward,” he told us. “I did it in my own time, on my own terms, in my own words. That’s exactly the way that I wanted to do it, and I’m really proud of that. When the time is right to continue the conversation forward, I certainly will do that. That’s why I took those steps in the first place.”
