‘American Idol’ Elimination Episode Crushes TV Competition

‘Idol’ puts up biggest non-sports Thursday ratings numbers since 2007. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler holds up his swear sign on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Simon who? Perhaps putting to rest any fears that “American Idol” would nosedive without iconic judge Simon Cowell, Thursday night’s first elimination episode of season 10 put up some stellar numbers for the singing competition. On a night when most of the competition on rival networks consisted of reruns (including, count ’em, six episodes in a row of “The Office” on NBC!) after the vaults were emptied last month during sweeps, “Idol” raked in 25 million viewers to win the ratings crown. In fact, the impressive numbers for “Idol” gave Fox the most-watched non-sports Thursday night number of any network over the past four years. The two-hour extravaganza, which not only shaped the top 10 , but also featured six performances by singers vying to score three wild card spots — not to mention the debut of judge Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” music video — was a 29 percent increase of last season’s first elimination night, according to Billboard With an 8.1 rating in the 18 to 49 demo, numbers were also up 13 percent over last Thursday’s “AI” episode. As you might expect, ratings climbed during the pivotal final half-hour of the broadcast, going from 25.96 million between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to 26.66 million for the final half-hour. The good ratings news bodes well for the start of live competition next week, when new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will have to finally show their stuff during two real-time broadcasts a week after charming viewers during the season’s pre-taped episodes. ‘American Idol’ Wild-Card Choice Was ‘Awful’ For Jennifer Lopez

Judge laments that ‘a lot of kids [went] home who deserved to be there.’ By Kara Warner “American Idol” season 10 top 13 at the top 13 after-party Photo: FOX The first elimination show of the new season of “American Idol” has come and gone in history-making fashion. Host Ryan Seacrest announced on the show Thursday (Mar 3) that around 40 million votes were cast, narrowing the field of 24 hopefuls to 10 contestants, the biggest cuts in the show’s history. Three more wild card contestants sang for their lives and were later added by judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson to make a top 13. When MTV News caught up with the involved parties at Fox’s afterparty to celebrate the “Idol” finalists, there were feelings of relief, joy and, for one judge, discomfort. “Ugh. It was awful!” Lopez said of the deliberation that went on between the judges to select the three wild cards at the end of the show. “It was so tough. It was so hard, even up until the very last second. It was like, wait a minute, we really didn’t know who to choose at the last minute. It could have gone any way. Even when we did it, when we announced it, we were like, ‘Did we do the right thing?’ I don’t know.” Lopez went on to say that there was not really a right or wrong with so many talented contestants in the mix this year. “[We] were going to send somebody home that maybe deserved to be there,” she said. “Probably a lot of kids [went] home who deserved to be there.” Stefano Langone snagged one of the lucky three wild card spots with his rendition of Smokie Norful’s “I Need You Now,” a decision he said he made for several reasons. “I knew if it got to the point where I had to sing for the wild card, that I’d be singing for my life,” Langone explained. “I needed a song that I’d done prior to this point that was the absolute perfect song for my voice, to show my soul, everything that I have, everything I could bring to the table as a musician.” Despite the anxiety involved in singing for his life, Langone said it was a great experience. “I had to work for that spot. I had to work to where I wanted to be, and I feel really blessed to have gotten that. I’m so thankful and honored and blessed. It’s a dream.” Fellow wild-card winner Naima Adedapo felt the same way about her song choice, Donny Hathaway’s “For All We Know.” “It really talks about what I wanted to talk about,” she said. “That is, ‘Love me tonight. I need you to put me through tonight. Let me show you who I am.’ ” Adedapo added that hearing her name called as part of the top 13 had her almost floating on air. “Words can’t really express it, but it’s like a high,” she said. “It’s like being elevated somewhere. I feel like I wasn’t even on earth anymore, I just kind of was happy and in the moment. I felt like I had an opportunity to really show them how much I really want it.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” at 10 p.m. Thursdays on MTV.com, following the “American Idol” results show, for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty ! ‘My Life As Liz’ Star Reveals Link To ‘American Idol’ Winner Kelly Clarkson

‘Idol Party Live’ guest Liz Lee went to same high school as Clarkson and says ‘there’s a trophy case dedicated to her.’ By Kelley L. Carter Liz Lee Photo: MTV News So would Liz Lee, the star of MTV’s popular series “My Life as Liz” ever audition for “American Idol”? Not a chance. Lee was a guest on MTV News’ brand-new weekly interactive online series, “Idol Party Live,” which kicked off on Thursday night (March 3) after the live results telecast of “American Idol” . The reality-TV star, who joined our “Idol” expert/host Jim Cantiello and EW.com “Idol” writer Annie Barrett, said she’d be too terrified to try out. But Lee made an interesting revelation on the live stream. The Fort Worth, Texas, native hails from the same small town as season-one “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson. “Kelly Clarkson went to my high school. I didn’t know her. I think my sister was friends with a friend who knew her. They’re all friends with someone who’s acquainted with her. There’s a whole trophy case dedicated to her,” Lee said. And who are Lee’s favorites so far this season? She’s leaning toward the quirky, nerdy types, she said, but has her eye on one contestant in particular: Casey Abrams . “I like the Seth Rogen-y, quirky, [guy],” she said. “Like, I would hang out with this guy. I would play video games with this guy. He’s like my friend Sully. He’s a Sully. It’s like a complete transformation. He’s cute, nerdy, quirky Seth Rogen, and then he turns into this Antonio Banderas, attractive, mysterious thing. It’s incredible — on a dime.” “Idol Party Live” airs every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, immediately following the “American Idol” results show, and Cantiello and a special celeb guest will be on-hand to do a post-wrap on all things “Idol.” They’ve even promised some karaoke! Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On The Floor’ Video Bows On ‘American Idol’

The ‘Idol’ judge’s sultry dance clip premiered during Thursday’s first results show. By Kelley L. Carter Jennifer Lopez in her “On The Floor” video Photo: MTV News With just about 10 minutes left on “American Idol” Thursday (March 3), Jennifer Lopez debuted her new music video, “On the Floor.” The clip was cued up right as suspense built up over who the judges would grant second-chance passes. The single marks the first time Lopez has hit the Billboard top 10 since her 2003 #1 track “All I Have.” The new song, featuring Pitbull, debuted at #9 on Billboard Hot 100. Dressed in a glittery, gold outfit, Lopez is seen in several long shots, dangling lazily on a couch. Between shots of the Miami rapper, the video returns to scenes of Lopez dressed in a sexy, skintight catsuit dancing in front of a gold cardio barre. “If you’re an animal, tear up the floor,” she sings, giving the camera her fiercest gaze and moving her shoulders aggressively. “Don’t stop, keep it moving/ Put your drinks up.” The video set looks like the kind of lounge-y nightclub that you’d find in one of the exotic locations that she shouts out in the song, one that only caters to a VIP clientele. In another scene, Lopez is wearing a bikini top when she makes her way to the center of a stage and breaks it down “fly-girl” style. In still another shot, the star’s mane is piled on top of her head, very elegantly as she sexily implores everyone to dance the night away and spend it on the floor. ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ Stars Teach The Kids About The ’80s

Anna Faris thinks of ‘big bangs, shoulder pads and jelly shoes’ when she looks back at the decade. By Kara Warner Anna Faris in “Take Me Home Tonight” Photo: Relativity Media In addition to being an entertaining and raunchy romantic comedy, “Take Me Home Tonight,” which features the acting and comedic talents of Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer and Dan Fogler, is also a cinematic homage to the 1980s. When MTV News caught up with the cast, we asked them to explain to the younger generations what the ’80s were all about — check out the embedded video to really get a feel for their trip down memory lane. “It’s like ‘Glee,’ ” Faris said with a laugh. “Is it like ‘Glee’?” Fogler questioned his co-star. “I don’t know,” she said, second-guessing herself. “How would you describe that decade to them?” Fogler followed up, taking over the interviewer job. “It was a time when the music was so influential and the style, it was so specific to the ’80s,” Faris explained. “You know, the big bangs and the shoulder pads and the jelly shoes.” “It’s in your face!” Fogler interjected. “No one really apologized for what they were wearing or doing.” Faris agreed: “Yeah, women wore a lot of super high-waisted bikinis — which men, I think, still kind of like.” “They do, because you saw more of the pelvis than you normally would,” Fogler explained, adding that the trend should make a comeback. Grace and Palmer took a different track in describing the ’80s. Grace chose to call out several famous music videos from our MTV archives in order to “describe” what was happening during the decade. “Let’s play a couple of [music videos] right now,” Grace instructed, proceeding to name his favorite ’80s artists and their hit songs. “Duran Duran, ‘Girls on Film’ — go! OK, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf,’ go to that video,” he said. “That is the opening-credit scene [for ‘Take Me Home Tonight’]. OK, now we are back. Now, do ‘Video Killed the Radio Star,’ ” he said. “The first video ever played on MTV. This video was going on when I was watching MTV.” “He’s good!” Palmer added, not able to comment properly on the happenings back in the day, since she was born in 1986. What are your favorite ’80s videos or trends? Tell us in the comments! President Obama Tells Ghadafi The Jig Is Up, Time To Go!

The leaders of the free world have made their support for the people of Libya clear. Now, President Obama has made it official. Obama for the first time called for Khadafy to step down as the UN Security Council hit the embattled strongman with stiff sanctions. “When a leader’s only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now,” Obama told German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to a summary of the conversation provided by the White House. Obama’s blunt message marked a departure for the White House, which had earlier insisted it was up to the Libyan people to decide who should lead their country. Hours after Obama’s pronouncement, the council ordered an arms embargo, assets freeze and travel ban against the Libyan government, Khadafy, his close family and associates. It also ordered a crimes against humanity investigation into the bloodshed. Khadafy, earlier in the day, signaled he had no intention of giving up power as he handed out guns to his supporters and urged teams of young men to hunt down dissidents. Terrified anti-government protestors braced themselves for more bloody battles as gunfire continued to ring out across the capital. Condemnation mounted from world leaders the day after Obama authorized U.S. sanctions against Libya, with Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi saying it appeared Khadafy was no longer in control. The dictator’s son, Seif al-Islam, dismissed suggestions the country was slipping from his father’s hands, saying three-quarters of the country remains under government rule and was “living in peace.” He added that if anti-government demonstrations by “terrorists” do not end, Libya risks descending into civil war “like Somalia.” News filtering out of Libya painted an entirely different picture as new details emerged of the violent methods used to quash the protesters in recent days. The New York Times reported loyal Khadafy forces shot at people from within ambulances and used anti-aircraft guns against crowds. Witnesses said the dead and injured were being rounded up and taken from hospitals to cover up the alleged human rights abuses. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said more than 1,000 people have died in the unrest in Libya, but it has been impossible to establish an exact death toll. Do you think this means U.S. troops will be heading to Libya in the immediate future? That’s what it’s sounding like to us… Source
