Dania Ramirez On Premium Rush Hazards, Staying Sexy On A Bike, And Being Discovered By Spike Lee

In the latest installment of ARRIVALS , spotlighting breakthrough performers, Movieline chats with Dania Ramirez, who cycles to stardom opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon in this week’s Premium Rush . As Vanessa, the tough bicycling beauty of David Koepp’s adrenaline-fueled Premium Rush , Dominican-born Dania Ramirez ( X-Men: The Last Stand , Entourage , Heroes ) bursts onto the screen with such vitality that it’s no wonder director Spike Lee gave Ramirez her big break, years ago, after recognizing her as a former extra on one of his shoots. Ramirez, a onetime college volleyball star, credits her career to Lee (she appeared in his Subway Stories , The 25th Hour , and She Hate Me before carving out a career in TV and film; she’s got Marc Cherry’s Devious Maids series lined up for 2013). She spoke further with Movieline about her career beginnings, the artistic impulse behind her short spoof “Ass and Titties,” her real life job history (McDonalds to Rollergirl!) and her bicycling horror stories from the set of Premium Rush , in which fellow NYC bike messenger Joseph Gordon-Levitt woos her while they both tangle with a crooked cop (Michael Shannon). In a lot of movies it’s a little disappointing to see cutaways in action scenes that make it obvious that the actors are not doing their own stunts, but in Premium Rush it’s at least clear that you guys knew your way around a bicycle. The good thing about this movie is that a lot of the movie takes place on the bikes, so we had to get good at riding, and to a certain extent doing stunts. [Laughs] But don’t get me wrong, this is not to take credit away from the amazing, talented stunt people that were on set helping us out. There’s a fall that I take where I jump into the air and I could never have done that. Thank God for my stunt double! Joe [Gordon-Levitt] had four other people coming in and helping out. But we trained for six weeks in L.A. prior to shooting – to make sure our endurance was up, but also learning how to jump curbs and skid the bike and stop and turn so that we could do most of the cool sort of riding within the scenes and not have to have a stunt person come in. This not a movie full of CGI and effects, it’s a movie that you feel we’re really in danger and the ones doing everything. That’s what’s cool about it. That’s what makes it authentic. During the end credits there’s a neat but kind of horrifying video of [Joseph Gordon-Levitt] bleeding profusely after smashing his bike into the back of a cab. Yeah! He got 31 stitches. He went through a cab’s windshield! We had been filming for, I think, a month and a half, and that was definitely a moment when Joe and I looked at each other and said, ‘Maybe we should let the stunt people come in and do the stunts.’ [Laughs] We were so committed to wanting to be these people, and sometimes as an actor you wind up feeling invincible… That you have your characters’ abilities? Yes – you feel like you are this bad ass bike messenger and the truth is, we’re actors. Did you have any spills yourself? I fell every single day I worked, almost. I had bruises everywhere. I had these two gouges on my leg while I was riding, when I hit the mirror off the cab because my chain went into my wheel and I hit a pothole and hit the ground hard. We hit the ground all the time! I needed make-up all over my legs to cover up my bruises on a regular basis. But I like it. I like the adrenaline. And you’re a former athlete, which probably helped. I played volleyball at Montclair State – I did not ride a bike prior to doing this movie, I actually had a bike phobia. I fell down when I was like seven years old, really hardcore, and I did like three flips in the air with my bike. So this was an opportunity for me to sort of face my fear. And I did, and now I love it! I have two bikes now that I own and I’m training for the Malibu triathlon on September 16, I believe. So I’ve been training! Well, I feel that I can now share with you my secret: I still can’t ride a bike. You have to try! Now that you’ve watched the movie doesn’t it inspire you to go learn? Maybe you can start by the beach, with a beach cruiser. I’ll give it a shot. I think you should! Even if I should learn, at long last – how does one master the art of looking sexy while working up a sweat on a bike? You do that well, along with the rest of the cast. What is the trick to that? You’re the second person to call that sexy – I was not trying to be sexy! I don’t know how that came across sexy! I honestly was sweating, it was New York City in the summertime… Joe and I both were sweating bullets as the cameras were rolling, having to change shirts on a regular basis because we were so sweaty. But I think that’s what makes it so hot! The fact that we were sweaty, and raw, and it’s New York City. [Laughs] Now, let’s take it back to the beginning. Legend has it you were discovered by Jay-Z… My first time on camera ever I did Streets Is Watching , a compilation of music videos that he was doing. It was sort of like a mini-movie. An interesting part about me is that I didn’t grow up in this country and acting wasn’t something that I knew anything about, or something that I grew up thinking I could actually do for a living. So when I got cast in that I took it really seriously – and then came to find out that it was just a music video. [Laughs] But I don’t regret anything I’ve done in my life, and I love the fact that that was the first thing I’d ever done. I went from that to then walking into a featured extra situation with Spike Lee that led to my first starring role in a film, in Spike Lee’s She Hate Me . Spike was actually the first to discover me, as far as giving me respect within the industry. How did that happen? I was 16 years old and I went in for Subway Stories , a little mini-series he did for HBO, and I was a featured extra but it was the first time I got a SAG card. Right after that I started taking acting classes in New York City at the Actor’s Workshop studio and then I took a few years off to go to school. When I came out I did a commercial that Spike Lee directed for Kmart that led to him writing a part for me in 25th Hour and a few months later I went in and auditioned for She Hate Me , to play Alex opposite Kerry Washington. You must have made a great impression at 16. When I did the Kmart commercial he remembered me from Subway Stories ! I remember him remembering me while I was shooting the commercial, he brought it up. That was the last time before I got kicked out of my house that I walked into my dad’s house, we were shooting nights so I got home at like 6 o’clock in the morning and it was the day before I started college. My dad was like, ‘You’re either going to do this and be a lawyer or you’re going to do [acting].’ So I just never went back home. Spike is a very influential part of why I’m here today. Wow. It’s fantastic that he saw that something in you so early. Now, there’s a line in Premium Rush in which your character says she works as a bike messenger because she hates waiting tables. I’ve done every kind of job there is, from working at McDonald’s to doing a music video to roller blading at the Roxy. [Laughs] I was Rollergirl for a while! But I don’t act because I hate to wait tables, I actually act because I think it’s what I was always meant to do. Random question: What’s behind your Instagram handle, @markofthebeast? Mark of the beast! I’m a beast, and I want to leave my mark on everybody that dares to look. [Laughs] I remember watching you in a short film spoof , playing Nicki Minaj… It wasn’t so much a spoof of Nicki Minaj, that was more of a parody of America. To be honest with you, it was a way deeper message than what people took away from it. It’s called “Ass and Titties” and it’s about how in America these days you sort of get paid more for shaking your ass and titties than for your talent. That’s what the parody was about. Why Nicki Minaj? I had to choose – I’m not a rapper! I had to choose someone to channel the song through, so I chose Nicki Minaj. But I think everyone had a good response to it. You know, I’m an artist and I was just being an artist about my views in life, and if you have a good sense of humor about yourself it’s great. I don’t have anything against Nicki Minaj, or anybody that’s [parodied] in it! Premium Rush is in theaters today. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Florida Crazies: Man Popped For Going Crazy And Threatening To Murk People In A McDonald’s Drive-Thru

Florida Man Arrested For Going Crazy In McDonald’s Drive-Thru This guy just looks fawkin’ crazy: A man who apparently lost his cool at a McDonald’s drive-thru is in jail Friday for aggravated assault. Sarasota Sheriff’s deputies say John Widmann III got upset about how a man pulled into the drive-thru lane and went on a tirade pointing a gun at the man, a McDonald’s employee and a group of kids nearby. During his fit, witnesses say Widmann, 56, also threatened to kill the driver of the car during the heated exchange before driving off in a white Mercedes sedan. Deputies pulled Widmann over near Beneva Road and Guld Gate Drive and arrested him without incident. Deputies found a .38 caliber revolver and ammunition on the passenger seat. The state had issued Widmann a concealed weapons permit back in February. Francis Misantone, co-owner of The Bullet Hole firearms store, says, “I tell all my students if you take a gun out of your holster, it’s only in a grave situation, that you intend to use it. Never take it out to threaten with it.” Misantone says this road rage incident went too far and the gun owner overreacted. “If there was a show of aggressiveness, of force, if he had a bat in his hand… but there was nothing. I think the guy with the gun was too early to produce that.” He adds, “If the guy is just cursing at you, not going to hurt you, only as a last resort do you get the gun out.” Deputies charged Widmann with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improperly exhibiting a firearm. A Sarasota County judge set a $25,000 bond for the first charge and $500 for the second charge. According to the incident report, Widmann tells the deputy he was “only defending himself and that his rights were being violated, because he believed he had the right to protect himself.” Witness Merle Miller says he and a McDonald’s employee felt threatened when Widmann pulled out his gun and he says several kids were also nearby. Miller says, “Just because you have a concealed weapons permit, doesn’t mean you can put it out anytime you want.” As of Friday afternoon, Widmann was still in jail. The deputy who wrote Widmann’s incident report recommends that the state review Widmann’ s conceal weapon permit and consider pulling it after Thursday’s arrest. Source

Johnny Depp, The Black Keys Perform Live at MTV Movie Awards

Johnny Depp is no longer one of the coolest men alive. He is officially THE coolest man alive. At the MTV Movie Awards last night, he was not only handed the Generation Award, but joined The Black Keys live onstage for special performances of “Gold on the Ceiling” and “Lonely Boy.” You may now add rock star to his resume: The Black Keys – Gold on the Ceiling (Ft. Johnny Depp) The often-animated Depp maintained a straight face through the song, letting singer Dan Auerbach and guitarist Patrick Carney soak up the spotlight. It was an awesome moment … so much so that host Russell Brand had to take a break from making penis jokes to acknowledge it. Not a small feat. Depp is far from a novice, however. A fairly accomplished musician, he’s collaborated with everyone from Oasis to Alice Cooper over the past 25 years. Still, this ranks up there with the Dark Shadows star’s top moments, we’re guessing. Certainly for fans, his cool quotient was never been higher.

Kristen Stewart Makes ‘After Hours’ Debut In ‘The Yes/No Show’

‘MTV First: Snow White & the Huntsman’ debuts new clip and cast interview Tuesday night at 7:56 p.m. on MTV and MTV.com. By Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News At a time when it seems like virtually every movie at the multiplex is based on a fairy tale, comic book or best-selling YA novel, “Snow White & the Huntsman” checks off all the boxes even if it’s none of the above as well. Confusing? Well, the cast is clearly borne of past successful franchises, namely Kristen Stewart (have you heard of her?) coming off of “Twilight” and Chris Hemsworth dropping his Thor hammer in favor of an ax this go-round. And of course the film is inspired by one of the most cherished fairy tales of our youth. But look more closely at “SWATH” (as fans have quickly taken to calling it) and the film clearly owes more to Tolkien than to Walt Disney. And I think that’s why we’re all excited for its June 1 release. I know that’s the case for me. It doesn’t hurt that Charlize Theron looks to be chewing some scenery in a fun way with a diabolical take on the evil queen (much more fetching than the one in the cartoon of my youth, as I recall). Tuesday night (at 7:56 p.m. on MTV & MTV.com to be precise) we’re debuting “MTV First: Snow White & the Huntsman.” As usual, we’ll be debuting a never-before-seen clip, and I’ll be sitting down with the cast (Stewart, Hemsworth, Theron and Sam Claflin, who portrays the prince in the tale) for a 30-minute interview. We taped the special a little while back, which means I can share something fun and exciting with you: Kristen Stewart’s very first participation in “After Hours.” And what better franchise to start her off on than “The Yes/No Show”? [EMBED YES/NO SHOW] There’s a lot more where that came from on the full show Tuesday night, including tons of insight into the filming, the actors’ takes on their iconic characters, Chris and Kristen’s weapons technique and a near-breakup fight between Kristen and me. It’s all in good fun, and we’re quite proud of it. And there’s more exciting “SWATH” news to come as I’m headed out to England later this week to reunite with the entire cast, so as always, feel free to send your questions to me @JoshuaHorowitz with the #MTVSWATH. A Second Look I got a chance to see “Avengers” for the second time over the weekend, this time in good old 2-D (and I’d recommend seeing it this way, by the way). And by gosh, I might have enjoyed it more the second time around. I have a bunch of conflicting feelings about the movie. After my first viewing, I was pretty convinced that while I had a great time watching it, it’s less satisfying to me than most of the previous films. If we’re looking at the recent bevy of Marvel flicks, “Captain America” is my favorite, delivering the most full-bodied experience (i.e., it’s got the cool stunts and humor but it’s also got a great character arc at its core). But a funny thing happened as “Avengers” rolled the second time around: I let go of my hang-ups with the story (er, there isn’t much of one) and I let myself fully geek out for two hours at what Joss Whedon and company expertly did: create the purest fanboy-friendly film ever made. Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White & the Huntsman.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . B.o.B Says Iggy Azalea/ Azealia Banks Beef Not His ‘Business’

‘As an individual you have to understand what is your business and what isn’t,’ Bobby Ray says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: Getty Images B.o.B is a nice guy, but don’t let his cool, calm demeanor fool you. “I’m a Scorpio; I can be your best friend or your worst enemy,” Bobby Ray said when he appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “And as of now I’ve been your best friend.” Still, for the most part B.o.B steers clear of the extracurricular rap beefs, so don’t expect him to throw his two cents into the Iggy Azalea/ Azealia Banks dustup, even though he and Iggy are both prime players on T.I.’s Grand Hustle label. “I’m definitely always gonna ride for my team, always. There’s no doubt in my mind, but as an individual you have to understand what is your business and what isn’t your business,” he explained. “Now, if something spills over into my court, then I have to handle my business. But as of yet I really don’t attract that type of energy to myself.” There was, however, a lyrical tiff with Tyler, the Creator in 2011. After taking offense at a line on Tyler’s breakout song “Yonkers,” B.o.B responded with “No Future,” but both MCs downplayed any notion of beef, writing the incident off as just competition. Azalea versus Azealia, however, has become increasingly harder to ignore. The Harlem-bred Banks took exception after Iggy secured a spot on the coveted XXL Freshman cover by winning a fan vote. Banks had no problem lashing out at Iggy via Twitter, and when Tip defended his new prot

@MrsKutcher Is No More: Demi Moore Is @JustDemi

Actress changes her Twitter handle after split from Ashton Kutcher. By Terri Schwartz Demi Moore Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage It’s official: Demi Moore is no longer “Mrs. Kutcher” and is now “just Demi.” Almost six months after her , Moore has changed her Twitter handle to one that doesn’t tout her husband’s last name. Her user name is now @justdemi, and her old Twitter account has successfully been transported over to its new home, followers and all. “So hard finding a name that was fun somewhat playful and available. So for now it will be @justdemi It could grow on me!” she tweeted following the change. Kutcher and Moore announced their divorce in November following his and a subsequent on Twitter. Back in December, Moore responded to her followers who continually asked her when she was going to change her Twitter name from @mrskutcher. “Changing my twitter name isn’t a top priority right now. sorry it bothers so many of u,” she tweeted . “Should I not tweet until I do? does it really matter?” It seems like Moore has spent the past few months focusing on her recovery following her back in January and subsequent stint in rehab. After taking a break for three months, Moore returned to Twitter on April 15 and almost immediately started looking for a new handle. A new user has already snapped up the name @mrskutcher, but don’t be fooled. Though they have the same user picture Moore had and still go by the name “Demi Moore,” it’s a different person. Maybe that user name can stay around until Kutcher finds himself a new bride, though we would suggest she pick a different Twitter handle since that one might be a bit ill-fated.

Justin Bieber Goes ‘More Mature’ With ‘Boyfriend’ Video

Pop star brings new clip to MTV News and answers all his fans’ questions during Thursday’s ‘MTV First: Justin Bieber.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News From the back of a Shelby Mustang right to a showroom filled with classic cars, Justin Bieber premiered his highly anticipated “Boyfriend” video on Thursday (May 3) during “MTV First: Justin Bieber.” The sexy, sunny, Director X-directed clip certainly had fans in the room cheering. The video comes to life with shots of Bieber driving a muscle car, snuggling with his beautiful co-star and getting his dance on alongside his pals, all while they chill out at a rooftop party somewhere in Los Angeles. It’s a more mature look at the growing pop star, who in only a few short years has gone from strumming his guitar on the streets of his Canadian hometown to full-fledged international pop-star status, where he fills arenas all over the world. “I kind of switched it up from all the teasers,” Bieber told MTV News’ Sway Calloway about what fans saw of the video before its premiere. “I switched up the whole video on them, and really, I think it’s super cool. I wanted to do something a little bit more mature.” The video is full of swaggy images, ranging from his varsity jacket to his cool car, but what left one fan in the “MTV First” audience most intrigued were the gold sneakers he sports in the video. “I did pick out those swaggy gold shoes,” he laughed. “They spray-painted them gold. That’s what I’m going to do: I’m gonna start wearing gold shoes all the time.” With the video’s focus on cars and friends, the 18-year-old chatted about his own personal car collection. “I have a Range Rover and a Fisker. And I have a Smart Car. It just helps me get from point A to point B. I call it my little ‘swag car,’ ” he said. While Bieber made it clear that his off-time doesn’t look a lot like the party in the video, he did share what he does on the weekends: “I work. … If I’m with my friends, we like to do regular stuff,” he said, before opening up about what he does to unsuspecting pals in an elevator. “We have this game where basically we hit each other in the balls.” In addition to opening up about the video and his unusual take on riding in an elevator, he also talked about working with pals Drake, Kanye West, Usher and Taylor Swift for his brand-new album, Believe, out June 19. “Boyfriend” is the lead single from the highly anticipated release. But with the music world conquered, he also teased his forthcoming work in Hollywood. He gave an update on his in-the-works basketball movie with Mark Wahlberg , as well as his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in “Men In Black 3.” He noted, however, “Right now I’m focused on my album and Believe. ” What did you think of the “Boyfriend” video?
