Views From The 1600: President Obama’s Most Fascinating Photos From 2015 [Part 1]

White House Releases Most Captivating Photos Of President Barack Obama From 2015 Happy new year, BOSSIP fam! 2015 was an extraordinary year for our President, Barack Obama . He had to deal with a maddening number of public shootings, a failing healthcare system, civil rights issues and all while trying to find ways to keep Americans employed. The POTUS shared some thoughts with us about his most eventful year via Facebook: Happy New Year, everybody! There’s a lot I’m grateful for over this past year: Businesses that continued an all-time record streak of job creation; a health care system that covers more than 90 percent of us for the first time; a country where all our marriages are equal under the law for the first time; a world united around a prosperous, low-carbon future for the first time. But mostly, I’m grateful for you, and to be your President – because it’s your hard work, determination, and fundamental decency that led us forward through 2015, and that will keep leading us forward in 2016. Because of you, as long as I’ve had the privilege to serve in this office, I’ve never been more optimistic for a year ahead. So here’s my resolution: to do everything I can, with every day I have left, partnering with as many of you as possible, to keep making the promise of this country a reality for all of us. White House photographer Pete Souza and his staff have released some very poignant photographs of the President that were taken over the course of last year that show the commander-in-chief in his role as leader, father, friend, gentleman and vulnerable human being. Black Male Professor Sues College For Racial And Gender Discrimination

When we think about discrimination directed at a person because of both their race and gender, the image of a Black man is not what usually comes to mind. And yet, that is what Brarailty “Rel” Dowdell, an independent Black filmmaker (most notable for the film Train Ride and Changing the Game) and adjunct professor at the Community College of Philadelphia might be looking to change. According to Philly.com, Dowdell recently filed a lawsuit in federal court alleging that the CCP denied him a full-time position because he was both Black and male. He also claims that none of the seven full-time faculty members hired for the English department this year were African-American men… [ MadameNoire ] Viral Tweet Raises Important Question: Why Aren’t Tampons Free? There is an interesting debate happening online about the price we pay to menstruate. It all started from a tweet, which stated: “If you can afford to give boys free condoms you can afford to give girls free tampons. Menstruation is a lot harder to refrain from than sex.”… Folks do not fully understand the abuse women, in particular, receive online just for the mere infraction of making a good point in public. Still, the tweet has sparked months of debate, particularly on the Facebook page of 99.9 FM The Sun in Canada… Those who were in support of the tweet left messages for the contrarians like this: “Condoms, lubricants, sunscreen and nicotine patches are all tax-free because they are classed as ‘important’ health goods. Why aren’t sanitary products viewed in the same light?!” [ MadameNoire ] Relive A Golden Era With The 90’s FreakNik: An Atlanta Story While tropical oases like Mexico and Florida became preferred destinations for college spring breakers, Atlanta’s annual FreakNik was the place to be for the multitude of HBCU students around the country in the 1990s. What started out as a mere cookout would soon grow into something much bigger, complete with live performances from music’s crème de la crème. The legendary weekend event gathered attendees from every corner of the U.S. to a place where all kinds of entertainment, fellowship, and debauchery transpired. The 40-minute documentary surfaced the Internet featuring narration from several different ATL area DJs who tell their side of how Freaknik all started and the influence it had on the city’s music… [ HipHopWired ] Marshawn Lynch Finally Trademarks His Phrase “I’m Just Here So I Won’t Get Fined” [ Vibe ] Dubai — Massive Hotel Blaze Before NYE Firework Display [ TMZ ] Denying People A Job After They’ve Left Prison Is Unconstitutional, Court Rules [ HuffingtonPost ] 10 Songs To Start The New Year Off Right [ StarPulse ]

Shaun King Gets Dragged Off Twitter

Shaun King Got Dragged Off Of Twitter Shaun King’s role in the Black Lives Matter movement has been an interesting point of contention to say the least. While his role in reporting the unjust murders of Black men and women across the country has been invaluable, his other work has been questioned from the very beginning. There were numerous incidences of him allegedly asking for money for various causes – Tamir Rice, Bree Newsome, etc. – and stories coming out that the cash didn’t go where he said it would. Then there’s the story of Justice Together – and organization headed by King that fell apart under speculation of more money mismanagement. Things came to a head Sunday night when King sent out this tweet aimed at Deray and Netta in defense of his own practices of sharing videos without trigger warnings beforehand. The tweet was messy and disappointing and ended up with people finally coming for him for receipts and his “shady” maneuvers in the past. Take a look. No matter what ends up happenings, we hope King keeps reporting on the injustices we face every day as it’s incredibly important work. Still, this was not a good look for him.

Heidi Montag’s Dad: I’m Not Guilty of Incest and Sexual Assault!

Cripes o Rama. Heidi Montag’s dad, William, 68, was charged earlier this year with both “aggravated incest” and ” sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust,” according to Radar Online . William denies the charges, which took place over fifteen years ago, and claims he’s innocent. “Allegations were brought forward by a woman, who is now an adult, who had alleged a sexual assault a little more than 15 years ago during a period of time when she was between 14 and 17,” Arapahoe County, CO Capt. Larry Etheridge said. Several sources confirm that neither Heidi nor her older sister, Holly were victims of these crimes. There were allegedly 50 separate incidents between 1996 and 1998 “involving oral sex and sex toys,” according to Rada r. “His life is in ruins now — even if he’s proven innocent that dark cloud will still loom over him,” a family friend told the Mail Online of William at the time. William was released on $50,000 bail after the arrest.  View Slideshow: Celebrity Mug Shots: BOOK ‘EM!

Tia Mowry Lashes Out at Body-Shamers, Is NOT Pregnant

For the record, Tia Mowry is not pregnant. Also for the record: Tia Mowry would really prefer if you did not ask her if she were pregnant. With chatter swirling around the Internet for weeks about the state of the star’s womb, the 37-year-old actress talked to HuffPost Live and explained why she’s offended by the pregnancy line of questioning. “I am not pregnant, I am just happy. I’ve gained these extra 10 [or] 15 pounds because of my cooking show,” Mowry says. “I’m just enjoying life, and when I want to drop the pounds, I will, but right now I’m happy with who I am.” Four months ago, Mowry responded to inquiries over whether she was expecting or not by posting a home pregnancy test… and having the result read “Just Fat.” That’s both funny and sad at the same time. It’s witty and also very telling of where society is. View Slideshow: 23 Celebrities Who Used to Be Really Fat “It is a form of body shaming, I will say that, and it’s pretty unfortunate,” Mowry added. “We live in a society that is so obsessed with being perfect…why can’t we just be us? “We need to be more supportive with body images, especially with women, showing that all sizes are beautiful. “And I’m talking about in magazines, advertisement in regard to what’s sexy and what’s not sexy. We all need to be a little more supportive of each other. I think if we start there, we’ll see a difference.” Amen, Tia. Amen.

Nathan Griffith: Neglecting Son, Loving Teen Mom Fame?!

If you’ve been following the drama surrounding the  Jenelle Evans-Nathan Griffith custody battle , then you might think that Griffith is a devoted dad, who desperately wants to spend more time with his son. According to a new report from Radar Online, however, it seems that Nathan is more interested in filming a new season of Teen Mom than being a father. An unidentified friend of Jenelle’s tells the website that Nathan’s primary reason for making Jenelle’s life more difficult is staying on the show: “MTV has been filming Nathan lately,” says the source. “He has been filming without his son and with his friends. “It seems like he cares more about being on TV than his child. It’s weird.” Weird, indeed, but it certainly makes sense. The Teen Mom franchise is so successful that even baby daddies can pull in six figures for a single season. Nathan surely knows that if he stops creating drama with Jenelle, he’ll probably go the way of her many other exes.  So when he throws a fit and accuses Jenelle of leaving the country with Kaiser , you can assume an MTV crew is on hand to capture the ensuing fight. View Slideshow: Jenelle Evans & Nathan Griffith: A TMI, Sometimes Rocky Romance Unfortunately, the insider says that Nathan’s interest in his son’s life ends when the cameras are gone. “He didn’t see Kai at all through the holiday weekend,” says Jenelle’s friend. “Nathan hasn’t spoken to Jenelle. He tried reaching out to a friend of hers after her Instagram got hacked, but Jenelle hasn’t heard from him since that. “It doesn’t surprise Jenelle that this is what he is doing because something – gym, tanning, filming – has always been more important than Kai to Nathan.” Yikes. It’s hard to believe, but it sounds as though Jenelle is actually in the right for once. Hopefully she can get this “friend” to testify at a custody hearing.

Keith Urban Mourns Late Father

The father of country music superstar Keith Urban has lost his battle with cancer. This sad news was relayed to fans via a message on the official Keith Urban website. Referencing his wife, Nicole Kidman, Urban wrote the following to readers: “I’ve been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support that Nic and I, and our family, have received since my dad’s passing on Saturday night.” The American Idol judge added that his dad is “finally at peace” after such a long battle with such a debilitating disease.  Urban went on to credit his father’s affection for Don Williams and other country artists as a major reason for why he went into this industry. You don’t exactly see many Australian country music singers, after all. “My dad’s love of country music and America set me on my life’s journey, and shaped so much of who I am today,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone who has kept us all in your thoughts and prayers.” Bob Urban was placed in hospice care about a week prior to his passing. His son, meanwhile, will be front and center once again when American Idol kicks off its final season on January 6. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family.
