‘Iron Man 3’: Is The Mandarin An Extremist Fringe Republican?

A recent production still from Iron Man 3 shows that movie’s presumed main villain, the Mandarin , in a kind of evil Stevie Nicks “Stand Back” pose with what appears to be a translucent cape or tapestry draped from him.  And right now, I’m obsessed with the text that’s on it. Earlier this month, I wrote about director Shane Black ‘s comparison of Ben Kingsley’s character to Marlon Brando’s portrayal of Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now   as “a guy who’s gone off the reservation” and is “incorporating all these different symbols and iconography into his worldview.” The above photo offers some clues into that worldview, and despite Black’s comment (contained in that same post) about the Mandarin’s “obsession with Sun Tzu and ancient arts of warfare,” the writing on that cape points to the Bible and a bastardization of American capitalism. In other words, the Mandarin’s name may evoke the Far East, but, in the above photo, he’s surrounded by text and images more frequently associated with the far right. The Far East Vs. The Far Right Whether that fabric is an item of clothing or some type of banner,  aspects of it resemble the typeface and designs found on American dollars. Instead of “In God We Trust,” however, the Mandarin’s motto appears to be “In Chaos We Trust.”  There’s no clear depiction of that saying, but if you look at the circular design on the right side of the fabric, you can make out “In Chao…” while “Trust” can be seen on the circular design to the left.  (That’s assuming symmetry, by the way.) Is He Referencing The Bible?  Also, on the left side of the fabric is a partially obscured hand-scrawled phrase that appears to be “redeemed through blood” (and may be written in blood, given its color).  That phrase is commonly used in writings about the Bible and often refers back to the Tenth Book of the New Testament, Ephesians 1:7 : “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” (That’s from  the   New American Standard Version of the good book. )   In its Biblical usage, the redemptive blood belongs to the martyred  Jesus Christ, but it’s unclear whether the Mandarin sees himself as a Christ figure or whether he’s twisted the phrase into something much more nefarious that requires a lot of blood to be spilled before his idea of redemption can occur. If there are any Marvel Comics-loving Biblical scholars or GOP pundits out there who can shed more light on these clues, please enlighten me in the comments section below. WATCH: ‘Before Midnight’ Trailer − Ethan Hawke Calls Julie Delpy The ‘Mayor Of Crazy Town’

I’ve never been a huge fan of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunset and Before Sunrise for exactly the reason that so many people adore it:  the self-absorbed dialogue and debates about life and love that take place between Jesse ( Ethan Hawke ) and Céline ( Julie Delpy ) are so authentic that I’d much prefer to engage in them myself rather than watch two actors do it for me. (I do self-absorption magnificently, if I do say so myself.) But if you are entertained by two actors bickering about their on-screen relationship, you’d have a hard time doing better than Hawke and Delpy in this trailer for   Before Midnight . In the latest installment of their 18-year romance, Céline complains that she’s “stuck with an American teenager” and Jesse calls her the “Mayor of Crazy Town.” And yet, all these years later, they’re still together and have two daughters in tow as they vacation in romantic, seductive Greece. I missed the movie at Sundance — so why do I feel like I know how this story ends? The Mayor of Crazy Town Vs. The American Teenager Check out the trailer here: Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . Shifty Shellshock In A Coma

Former ‘Celebrity Rehab’ star and Crazy Town singer in ICU. By Gil Kaufman Shifty Shellshock Photo: Getty Images VH1 “Celebrity Rehab” star and former Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock is reportedly in a coma in a Los Angeles hospital after his admission last week to the intensive care unit. TMZ reported that Shellshock (born Seth Binzer), 37, entered the ICU last Thursday and is currently in an unresponsive state. At press time there was no information on what sent him to the hospital, but unnamed sources close to the singer speculated that it was drug-related. The troubled singer was slated to appear in court his week for a pre-trial hearing stemming from a cocaine-related arrest in February. Last March he was arrested after police responded to a domestic violence call and officers realized he had outstanding warrants for an unrelated case. Shellshock co-founded the rap-pop group Crazy Town in 1999 with pal Bret Mazur. They hit it big with their bubbly hit “Butterfly”
in 2001 from their debut album, The Gift of Game . It would prove to be the peak of their career, as their follow-up, 2002’s more rock-oriented Darkhorse failed to connect with fans. While his guest vocals on superstar DJ Paul Oakenfold’s 2002 hit “Starry Eyes Surprise” helped turn that song into a global hit, Shifty released a solo album in 2004 called Happy Love Sick that flopped. Crazy Town briefly reunited in 2007, but never finished a promised third album. In the interim, Shifty made more headlines for his chaotic personal life, which included police calls for domestic disturbances, multiple trips to rehab for his ongoing drug addiction and a number of drug-related heath scares. He checked into the first season of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab” show, then returned near the end of season 2 after his addictions got the best of him again. He also appeared in the first two seasons of the spin-off show “Sober House,” during which viewers saw him continue to battle his drug demons over the course of multiple relapses. A spokesperson for VH1 could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Artists Butterfly
