My Chemical Romance Team With Fans On ‘Sing It For Japan’

Band will release charity version of latest single and fan-fueled video, with all proceeds going to Red Cross efforts. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Samir Hussein/ Getty Images My Chemical Romance have announced plans to release a charity version of their song “Sing,” with all proceeds going to the Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Japan. But they’re not doing it alone. Instead, they’re reaching out to members of their MCRmy to help the cause. The band is asking fans to submit videos, pictures, drawings and written messages to the people of Japan through social sites like Twitter — using the hashtag #SINGItForJapan — which they’ll then compile into a video to be paired with the song. “We’d like to send messages of hope to Japan from people all over the world. … Go wherever your creativity and heart takes you. It could be as simple as you holding up a sign with ‘#SINGItForJapan’ written on it, or anything else you can dream up,” guitarist Ray Toro wrote on the band’s official site. “From what we’ve seen on tour, we know you guys can dream bigger than we ever could. Don’t be afraid to get your families involved. If you are inspired to do something alone, that’s great too. But we encourage you to get a big group of people from your community together. We want Japan to know just how many people are behind them.” Toro added that the band got the idea after noticing that, in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that ravaged Japan, fans were sending messages of support to the nation using the hashtag. “After the news of the earthquake and tsunami spread, I did what most people did. I stopped and stared at the TV. I sat at the computer, constantly refreshing CNN in hopes of some good news,” he wrote. “And I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I noticed a hashtag, ‘SINGItForJapan,’ where you kids were writing messages of hope, saying prayers and sending your condolences and well wishes to survivors. It moved me in a profound way.” The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET. There’s no news on just when the band’s new version of “Sing” will be made available, but for more information — and to submit material for #SINGItForJapan — check out My Chemical Romance’s official site . REWIND: Carlos Broady, “I Definitely Hear Biggie In Lil Wayne”

Excerpt from:

A few years ago I was asked to write a cover story in The Source magazine for the 10th Anniversary of Biggie’s passing. Being a jaded hip-hop production fiend I didn’t want to take the usual angle with the story, so I spoke with several producers and the DJ who discovered him, MR. Cee to get a unique take on the influence of the Notorious B.I.G on today’s hip-hop artists and fans. One producer in particular, Carlos “Six July” Broady , worked with both Biggie and one of his clones , Gorilla Black. It made for some interesting convo: Easy Mo Bee: “Flavor In Your Ear,” “The What” “Warning” “Party & Bullshit” As an MC, lyricist and as a writer, the thing that stood out about him was tone of voice, cadence or what we call flow. As tone of voice goes, a lot of people don’t know, anybody that entered the music life of Biggie…by the second album he had matured vocally into a really secure MC. He was so sure of himself that you heard it in his voice. In the beginning, “Party and Bullshit,” ” Gimme Da loot,” there was that loud, hard screaming voice. You can tell from the vocals that Fifty took were from that period. We heard the voice calm down a little on “Warning” but I really noticed it on “Big Poppa.” I was like yo, is this new Biggie? … DJ Mr. Cee: The importance of who he is and still being the greatest rapper of all time is still evident, but I think the one thing we need to start being concerned with is continuing to educate the younger generation on who the Notorious BIG is. As the years pass by there is a younger generation that is going to start not knowing who the Notorious B.I.G is. And it may sound funny that I’m saying this, but I DJ in these clubs all the time and it’s getting to the point where I can play “One More Chance” for an 18 year old audience and they almost don’t know the record… DJ Premier, “Kick In The Door,” “Unbelievable” “Ten Crack Commandments” Well, me personally, I don’t’ think he’s an influence at all on these new MCs cuz the skill level has gone way down. Biggie never said any dumb rhymes. His worst rhyme is better than anything to come out now. I don’t hear artists pushing the envelope. Other than Royce and maybe The Game, he had the most consistent album of 2006… Carlos Broady “My Downfall” “Niggas Bleed” “What’s Beef” “Somebody Got to Die” I think Biggie’s influence has survived because if you look at the style that Big had, the creativity…what I liked about Biggie is that he’d rap over any type of beat. When I hear cats like TI and hear them flip their lyrics, I can kind of hear it. I hear it in Lil Wayne as well. I’m from the south, so to see hip-hop doing what its doing makes me glad. We’ve been doing this for a long time and now we can do the things we want to do mainstream. I can definitely hear Big in Lil Wayne , the flyness. That’s just me… Get the complete memories at Nodfactor.com

Willow Smith Previews ’21st Century Girl’

Pop singer was spotted filming a video for the song in L.A. over the weekend. By Jocelyn Vena Willow Smith on the set of the music video for “21st Century Girl” Photo: Eric Ford / On Location News Last year, Willow Smith wanted us to whip our hair back and forth, and on her new single, she proclaims to be a “21st Century Girl.” The up-and-coming pop star was spotted filming the video for the song, off her Roc Nation debut album, over the weekend. Willow was joined by her parents, Will and Jada, on the set, as well as her brother Jaden and his “Karate Kid” co-star Jackie Chan. The video was shot over two days in downtown L.A. In the clip, the pint-size pop star was seen in braids and wearing various multi-colored outfits that included neon colors and leopard print. “Hi, guys! I am on my video set and I just wanted to give you guys a sneak peek of the new sound of my song ’21st Century Girl,’ ” she said in a video posted on Facebook . In the video, Willow rocks bright green eye shadow, and in the background, several of her over-the-top looks can be seen hanging on racks. “So, hope you like it,” she said. “21st-century girl/ I do what I like/ 21st-century girl/ I’m taking you for a ride,” Willow sings. The song, much like her first single, “Whip My Hair,” is a club-banging anthem. “21st-century girl/ Gonna live it up/ Just live it up,” she goes on to sing over the heavily produced beat. Willow first got everyone’s attention last fall when she burst on the scene with her debut single. And she’s already got some big projects in the works. She’s set to perform at the Grammy Awards on February 13, and she is also going to hit the road with Justin Bieber when he tours Europe starting in March. Lady Gaga Or Britney Spears? RuPaul’s Drag Queens Weigh In

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season three premieres Monday (January 24) on Logo. By Damian Vaca Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Reluctantly crouched behind the red carpet line, drag queens primping and taking their time, the flashbulbs go off and the cameras go up, all of them yearning for their chance at the cup! Amid the glam and sequins in the air, competition was definitely on everyone’s mind, so what better time to find out who RuPaul’s drag queens predict will rule 2011: Lady Gaga or Britney Spears? “With Britney and Gaga coming out with new [albums] this year — it’s going to be Gaga,” Shangela, of season two, predicted. “Gaga runs the world, so Britney better take a seat and enjoy.” Tough words about a woman who has reached the #1 iTunes spot in 19 countries since her new single, “Hold it Against Me,” was released a little over a week ago. Season three’s Venus D Lite, who could give Madonna a run for her money, stated, “I would probably say Britney — only because Gaga has had her spotlight moment.” However, Raja, also from season three, disagreed: “I’m going to say Gaga. … She challenges everyone and really puts out new ideas, and I certainly appreciate that.” With both artists set to premiere highly anticipated videos in the next couple of months, fans are waiting to see what new creative visions the stars will bring to the world of pop culture. “I would love to see [Gaga] just be an artist and not just a character,” said Sonique of season two. “With Lady Gaga, you can’t really expect anything other than something that is going to be controversial.” season three castmember Mimi Imfurst, who arrived on the red carpet in an epic “worldly” outfit, is definitely on Team Gaga: “Lady Gaga has all the creativity that Britney doesn’t have, plus all the talent she doesn’t have, so Lady Gaga all the way.” When all is said and done, one thing’s for sure: RuPaul’s drag queens definitely aren’t shy about expressing their opinions. Season three of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” premieres Monday (January 24) at 10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. Central on Logo. Who do you think will conquer 2011: Britney or Gaga? Sound off below! Kanye West And Jay-Z Harness Social Media For Watch The Throne

After MCs serve up H.A.M. on joint album’s fan page, execs at Def Jam, Facebook reveal MCs’ social strategy to MTV News. By Jenny McCoy, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Kanye West at Facebook headquarters Photo: Facebook These days, among other things, the hip-hop release playbook requires an active Facebook account, a fact rap heavyweights Kanye West and Jay-Z are obviously aware of. Just after midnight on Tuesday (January 11), the MCs gave fans a first listen to “H.A.M,” the lead single from Watch the Throne — in exchange for a “like” on the Facebook page for their collaborative album. The Watch the Throne page uses Facebook’s most popular music application, BandPages, to stream the single, and it has amassed more than 57,000 fans in just three days. “It’s great to see artists turning to social platforms to get their music out to their fans. The music release process isn’t about radio play anymore — it’s about finding fans where they live, getting songs to the people who care,” said Brenna Ehrlich, news editor at Mashable.com. Indeed, this tactic is just another example of a growing trend in the hip-hop community and the music industry at large. “While people have been able to share their music tastes on Facebook since the beginning, and we saw the emergence of social music applications gain popularity when we opened our platform in 2007, we’re still just at the beginning of this new world of music and technology,” said Meredith Chin, a staffer at Facebook’s corporate communications department. “It will be exciting to see how things evolve over time based on the creativity and imagination of musicians and their fans.” And in the wake of MySpace, the self-proclaimed “entertainment destination for Gen Y,” announcing a 47 percent staff reduction , Kanye and Jay-Z’s release strategy is just another indication of Facebook’s growing share of the social music space. Recently, both Lil Wayne and Avril Lavigne offered fans similar single-stream capabilities, but Kanye and Jay-Z made their release distinctive by directing fans to an album-specific fan page rather than simply leveraging their existing pages, which are home to 5.4 and 6.1 million fans, respectively. “I think it was smart to launch their own page, but I would have used both accounts as well. That way fans would be able to easily find the track, rather than going to a brand-new page,” Ehrlich said. Representatives for Def Jam revealed to MTV News that the idea to release “H.A.M.” via social-media network came from none other than Hov. “It was Jay-Z’s camp who set that up,” said JD Anderson, manager of new media for Def Jam. “The application also used in the strategy, RootMusic, has the capability to stream music on Facebook.” According to Anderson, the two rappers took advantage of their massive combined Facebook following to showcase the first effort from the upcoming album.”We launched it off of Jay’s Facebook, then we were sending people to the Watch the Throne new page,” Anderson explained. “Kanye has 5 million and Jay has 6 million. Everyone’s on Facebook, so the only thing that was lacking was the capability to stream music.” While there’s still no concrete release date for Watch the Throne, a rep for Def Jam revealed the LP will drop on the Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam imprint.
