Are Kanye And Jay-Z Delivering Watch The Throne Too Soon?

Critics weigh in on whether ‘Ye risks fans gorging on product while they’re still feasting on acclaimed Dark Twisted Fantasy. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Kanye West should be basking in the critical acclaim of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. He scored a number of year-end accolades for the project, including recognition from us here at MTV News. But a mere two months after the LP’s November release, the rapper’s already in promotional mode for his next project, Watch the Throne, a joint effort with Jay-Z . How did everything happen so fast? Jay-Z, of course, has been a prolific MC, having released six consecutive #1 albums, from 1998’s Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life to 2003’s The Black Album. And after a self-imposed exile, Kanye has proved to be just as productive as his mentor, including West’s three-month-long G.O.O.D. Fridays series, during which he released a new single each week. Back in October, during a lengthy sit-down, West casually told MTV News’ Sway that the Watch the Throne EP had evolved into a full-length album. “We putting out a whole album now,” he said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” According to ‘Ye, Jay-Z only has to write 10 verses (a hint?: the album will only be 10 songs), and West is collaborating with a bevy of producers, so his load will be substantially reduced as well. Another question, however, is whether fans will flock to the project so soon after snapping up West’s extravagant solo release. The early answer seems to be a resounding yes. “I think it’s smart because I imagine the two albums will be very different sonically, so it won’t be a case where one overshadows the other,” Complex senior editor Toshitaka Kondo told MTV News. “Also, when an artist is hot, their fans can’t get enough as long as the output is good. Young Money has had five or six different releases, including the Young Money album and projects from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the last 13 months, and I can’t see how it’s hurt any of them. I can’t see the sales of this album necessarily cannibalizing the sales from Kanye’s [last album] anyway. It’d be one thing if they were dropping within a few weeks of each other, but given how fast people consume music these days, six months is plenty of time.” Perhaps, though, instead of debating whether it’s too soon to put out the album, the more poignant thing to consider is this: arguably the two biggest stars in hip-hop want to make an album together ! “All artists need to find a way to combat falling record sales and meet fans’ desire for constant gratification — a new album from two of hip-hop’s biggest stars isn’t going to hurt,” the Amplifier ‘s Caryn Ganz said. “It could even renew interest in Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and encourage people to revisit it,” she said. “All the recent collaborations between these two have been very strong, like ‘Run This Town’ and ‘Monster,’ and Kanye seems to bring out a fascinating artiness in Jay. They just have to be careful that they don’t push it too far in an artsy, esoteric direction and lose their whole street base. But the timing doesn’t seem strange to me at all — strike while Kanye’s still making headlines for the right reasons, rather than wrong.” Do you think it’s too soon for Kanye and Jay to drop their Watch the Throne ? Nas’ Child, Spousal Support To Kelis Slashed In Half

Rapper is now obligated to fork over $25,000 a month to his ex-wife. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nas and Kelis in 2008 Photo: Steve Granitz / Getty Images Nas is kicking off 2011 with some thicker pockets. According to TMZ , the Queens rapper’s spousal and child support payments to ex-wife Kelis have been reduced by half. The MC is required to pay the “Milkshake” songstress $20,000 in spousal support and just over $5,000 in child support every month. The MC reportedly convinced the judge that the soft economy has hurt his ability to pull in cash. Nas was previously ordered in December 2009 to hand over $51,000 for monthly child and spousal payments — a total of over $600,000 a year. The figure was bumped up from a court-mandated amount of $40,000 per month in July 2009 after they announced their split in April of that year. The Distant Relatives MC has had trouble paying his ex-wife in a timely fashion in the past and once faced a civil contempt charge after owing over $350,000 in back support. In addition to having more spending money at his disposal, Nas has said he’s ready to release more solo material after dedicating his time to his joint hip-hop and reggae project with Damian Marley, Distant Relatives. “I been so caught up into me and [Damian’s] thing that I started to get used to it,” Esco recently told MTV News . “Like, I didn’t want to do the solo thing for a while. Me and D have just been doing our thing, reaching millions of people, but it’s that time.” Nas also dished that fans can expect a brand-new persona on his new material, as he plans to flex his creative skills on his forthcoming project. “Sometimes, you can approach a record and can think, ‘I got to take care of this person and I got to take care of that person,’ but you really got to take care of you,” he said. “I look at Michael Jackson, and before he passed away, I can only imagine the pressure he had to live up to for the next moonwalk,” he continued. “And the reality is, physically, he wasn’t able to live up to that. I would have loved to see him come up with the next level, without even dancing, just using his creativity. It’s all about evolving and that’s what I want to do: evolve.” Related Artists Kelis Nas

Nas Reveals He Considered Giving Up Solo Projects

MC tells MTV News he got deep into Distant Relatives collabo, ‘but it’s that time’ for a Nas album. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nas Photo: MTV News He went from Nasty Nas to Nas Escobar, blossoming into a mature voice that could collaborate with the likes of dancehall star Damian Marley for a full-length album. But As Nas’ street-edged material has continued to leak online, the question is which Nas will show up on his next effort, due later this year: Nasty or an entirely new persona? Neither, according to the Queensbridge MC. “Sometimes, you can approach a record and can think, I got to take care of this person and I got to take care of that person, but you really got to take care of you,” Nas recently told MTV News. “I look at Michael Jackson, and before he passed away, I can only imagine the pressure he had to live up to for the next moonwalk,” he continued. “And the reality is physically, he wasn’t able to live up to that. I would have loved to see him come up with the next level, without even dancing, just using his creativity. It’s all about evolving and that’s what I want to do, evolve.” Nas spent last year touring in support of Distant Relatives, his joint project with Marley. The rapper said he was so comfortable working alongside Bob Marley’s offspring that he momentarily considered putting his solo career on the back burner. “I been so caught up into me and [Damian’s] thing that I started to get used to it,” Nas recalled. “Like, I didn’t want to do the solo thing for a while. Me and D have just been doing our thing, reaching millions of people, but it’s that time.” For his next album, Nas said he expects to bundle the material with the latest volume of his Lost Tapes series . He still isn’t sure, however, whether his current label will release the album. “It’s not safe to say that it’s gonna be on Def Jam,” he told MTV News. “You know, news at 11,” he laughed. “We coming with the information on that soon.” Are you looking to the next Nas album? Jersey Shore Recap: Creepin’ on South Beach Hard

Creepin’: adj. 1. To sneak about unnoticed and in mysterious fashion; typically but not necessarily to convey the message that one is a sexual being. 2. To cheat. Last night on Jersey Shore , Ronnie continued his sleazy, drunken antics, Angelina sort of made up with peeps and Vinny may have done the unthinkable. How did it all play out in episode three of season two? THG’s got it covered … Steamed over her “brother” being slapped in the face three times. JWoww threatens to beat up Angelina since Pauly can’t. What are sisters for? Plus 3 . Angelina Pivarnick claims to not remember what she did to Pauly D. Sorry, but these people are clearly not blacked out drunk EVERY night. Minus 4 . Angelina wears her trademark sneer, and sunglasses indoors . “I didn’t know being drunk and people making mistakes was that bad…” – Angelina. Hmm . She has a point. That’s pretty much the premise of the show. Plus 2 . Vinny gets his fade on … a different kind of fade. He and Ronnie go to the ‘hood for haircuts. Vin is thoroughly entertaining there and at the gelato shop. Plus 5 . Snooki rocks the “Old Snook Look” for a night out, catching Vinny’s eye. The poof and cleave can only foreshadow bad things. Pauly D: “Who knows.” Minus 7 . The Situation is usually The Instigation, but this week was The Mediation, convincing the girls to give Angelina a chance if she “mans up.” What a uniter! Plus 6 . Vinny on J-Woww: “Albert Einstein should rewrite his laws of physics and rework them around Jennie’s t!ts.” Point taken, but they’re kinda gross, so Minus 4 . Now, for the obligatory Ronnie-Sammi drama. Minus 12 , since it’s both predictable and pathetic that he was creepin’ at the club, then crawled in bed with her. Did Vinny do the unthinkable? He’s about to wonder the same . Late night, Snooki is plastered, tries to call boyfriend Emilio Masella and breaks a bunch of $h!t, then ends up in bed with Vinny. Plus 11 , if only for the fact that Emilio just learned this happened from the show and wants to fight Vinny. The following night, it’s guys night out: MVP style. M ike, V inny, P auly. The MVPs of MIA, supporting the GFF (Grenade-Free Foundation). Acronym overkill, perhaps, but we gotta admire the creativity, and they are the MVPs tonight. Plus 9 . Pauly, on Angelina wanting to tag along: “It’s not MVPA.” Plus 3 . Their debauchery got off to a great start by ditching Angelina when she turned around for one second, but ended up with a jacuzzi full of grenades and a game of catch with a padded bra insert. How do we even evaluate that? Wash . Ronnie ditches Sam once again, gets drunk and starts creepin’ on random hoes. Minus 8 . Snooki and JWoww want to put an end it. Do it, girls! Plus 4 . TOTAL: +8 . SEASON: +42 . Follow this link for the night’s Jersey Shore quotes !

Kanye West’s Artsy ‘Power’ Video Gets Raves From Fans

“Ye is a visionary. Always pushing the boundaries. Great Video,” said one MTV News commenter. By James Dinh Kanye West (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage It was a big night for music videos on Thursday as MTV debuted Eminem and Rihanna’s cinematic “Love the Way You Lie” clip and Kanye West’s portrait (as he has referred to it), “Power.” Despite Yeezy’s clip lasting a mere one minute and 43 seconds, fans all over the Internet are gushing about the video’s artistic angle. The clip finds the rapper in the midst of still image that slowly pans out to reveal a portrait of religion, sex and … you guessed it … power. “I have watched it like 5 times and still want to see more. It’s awesome and epic,” said MTV News reader Justin. Justin explained that any viewer’s inability to react to the clip is evidence enough that “Power” is true art. “The reason some of you don’t know what to say proves it’s art. The world isn’t as simple as simple minded people…lol,” he explained. Many complimented West for bringing creativity back to music videos. “Mr. West brought the Art back to Music Video’s. Man I could watch [sh–] like this all day…. Even with commercials…,” Charles commented. It wasn’t just our comments section that was flooded with feedback either. The rapper’s official website has been loaded with praise for the Marco Brambilla-directed clip. “Ye is a visionary. Always pushing the boundaries. Great Video. Respect you Yeezy and love everything you do man. Can’t wait to buy the album,” said Swayne. Another even joked that New York City’s Museum of Modern Art should change their address because of the video. “NYC MoMA should change their address to 11 Kanye West 53 Street New York, NY 10019. I expect a full exhibition there at some point, ‘Ye! Keep doing what your doing. You bless us all [with] your talent. Love from Norway,” said fan MR MIKE. But not all were pleased with the clip’s short duration. “Ok…now let’s talk about the ‘Power’ video/portrait. I dig the creativity and stunning art but all that hype for 2 mins? Come on, Kanye!” said tweeter @JessNoel . Another tweeter, @AbsolutGrammy , had an interesting argument, saying, “Yall missing the point of the video ‘no one man should have all that power’ Kanye had the world tune in to MTV to catch 45 seconds of POWER!” Do you agree with any of the opinions given above? Edward Norton Booted from The Avengers Due to Lack of "Creativity and Collaborative Spirit"

Edward Norton is an Oscar-nominated actor. But that bullet point on his resume wasn’t enough to help the star keep his most recent job, as Norton has been booted fron the upcoming big screen adaption of The Avengers . The May 2012 movie will bring together Marvel comic book heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man. It will star Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson , Samuel L. Jackson and more – but will NOT include Norton in the role of Bruce Banner. The studio explained why in this harsh statement: “We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. “Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble… We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Snaps, yo ! Replied a rep for Norton: “This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light… This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.” Norton starred in a 2008 remake of The Hulk that was panned by critics and bombed at the box office.

Edward Norton Won’t Play Hulk In ‘The Avengers’

Norton’s rep fires back after studio implies actor doesn’t have the necessary ‘creativity and collaborative spirit.’ By Josh Wigler Ed Norton in “The Incredible Hulk” Photo: Universal Pictures When “The Avengers” assemble in theaters everywhere in 2012, the rapidly growing superhero franchise will be minus one major player: Edward Norton will not be reprising his role as Bruce Banner, better known by mainstream moviegoers as Hulk. In response to a rumor that Norton has not been invited to reprise his role as Banner in “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige released a statement to HitFix to confirm the news that the superhero team-up flick will move on without Norton’s participation. “We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in ‘The Avengers,’ ” Feige said. “Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. ‘The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert [Downey Jr.], Chris [Hemsworth], Chris [Evans], [Samuel L. Jackson], Scarlett [Johansson] and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Feige’s comments have prompted a pointed response from Brian Swardstrom of WME, Norton’s agent. “This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light,” Swardstrom said in a statement also released to HitFix . He explained that Marvel had made Norton an offer, and there had been “several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions” before a studio rep called to say they had changed their mind. “We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean-spirited, accusatory comments,” Swardstrom continued. “Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with [rumored director Joss Whedon] and the other actors in the ‘Avengers’ cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.” The absence of Norton from the final roster of “The Avengers” isn’t entirely surprising, as the actor previously told MTV News that his continuing status within the Marvel Universe was far from official. “It’s purely a function of time,” Norton said last September . “It’s always about just working things out on the schedule.” Although Norton won’t be involved in “The Avengers,” Marvel’s major motion picture event will involved regularly mentioned names including Downey as Iron Man, Hemsworth as Thor, Evans as Captain America and Jackson as Nick Fury. The suggestion of a “name actor” in Feige’s statement seems to refute initial reports that Marvel would fill the role of Banner with an unknown name. David Banner Says 9th Wonder ‘Made Me Wanna Do Music Again’

‘I had fun and gained a friend,’ Banner says of working with the producer on Death of a Pop Star. By Jayson Rodriguez David Banner Photo: MTV News David Banner is feeling like a 2008 Dwyane Wade right now. The rapper/producer is putting the finishing touches on his 9th Wonder-assisted collaborative effort, Death of a Pop Star , his first new collection in nearly two years. With a rekindled zeal for making music thanks to his work with 9th, Banner is set to revisit his most seminal LP, Mississippi: The Album, with hopes of delivering a redemptive effort a la Wade and his return to prominence after injuries slowed the star guard down. “I’m working right now on Mississippi: The Album 3 — it’s called The Trinity Movement, ” Banner told MTV News. “It’s the best work I’ve ever done and it’s because I’m coming off of Death of a Pop Star — the creativity coming off of Death of a Pop Star — and I’m able to go in a slightly darker place with me. ‘Cause some of the things I talk about on my album, I wouldn’t put that pressure on a 9th album — I think that responsibility should only be held by me. I have a lot of wild views and I know they’re wild. They’re meant to be. I would never put that on my friend. So I’m able to take that creativity and spin it off of 9th Wonder. “It’s like we playing basketball overseas for the USA and we win the gold — that’s how I’m feeling,” he continued. “I’m coming right off of that and going into my next album. ” Banner explained the strain of making music and operating within the major-label system proved to be a grind for the Mississippi-bred star, but he credited the North Carolina rapper with helping to restore his faith in music. Banner said he was set on living comfortably in Los Angeles and focusing on acting and commercial advertising opportunities — he recently scored a Gatorade spot. “I had fun and gained a friend,” he said of making Death of a Pop Star. “It made me wanna do music again.” Related Artists David Banner 9th Wonder
