Tyler, the Creator and company will probably run amok on ‘RapFix Live’ Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Odd Future Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Call security and alert the censors, because Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All will invade “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. Tyler, the Creator , Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Mike G., Syd tha Kid, Matt Martians, Jasper Dolphin, Taco and Earl Sweatshirt will all camp out on the “RapFix” couch for a rare interview. The group broke through in February 2011, when Tyler and Hodgy famously performed their single “Sandwitches” on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and have been on a meteoric rise ever since. Sadly, Earl Sweatshirt , who helped lay the groundwork for the group, wasn’t around to experience it. The then-exiled teen was sent to an all-boys military school in Samoa, but now Earl is back home and will be on “RapFix Live.” On Tuesday (March 20), the squad is releasing The OF Tape, Vol. 2 on their own Odd Future Records. The video for the LP’s first single, “Rella,” already has already amassed more than 9 million views in a month on YouTube and features Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis and Tyler running amok and terrorizing residents in a suburban community. The Tape ‘s second video, for “NY (Ned Flander),” is just as zany, with Tyler appearing as a rapping baby. While Tyler is without a doubt the most popular of the crew, each member has either a solo project or off-shoot group projects in the works. Hodgy Beats and Left Brain for MellowHype and are prepping their upcoming album Numbers, while Syd Tha Kid and Matt Martians released their Purple Naked Ladies album in December under the moniker the Internet. Domo Genesis, Mike G and OF singer/songwriter Frank Ocean all have upcoming projects in the works. If we’re lucky, the crew will also talk about their upcoming sketch comedy television series “Loiter Squad,” which premieres on Cartoon Network on March 25, but when it comes to Odd Future, there is really no telling. Catch odd Future on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtags #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists to @MTVRapFiX! The French actor bests George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman and Demian Bichir in the hotly contested race. By Ryan J. Downey Jean Dujardin wins Best Actor at the 2012 Oscars Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images For several weeks, conventional wisdom foretold that the Best Actor contest would come down to George Clooney (“The Descendants”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”), and Sunday night (February 26), the suspense was finally lifted. And the Oscar went to: Jean Dujardin. Dujardin bested a field that included Clooney’s pal Brad Pitt (“Moneyball”), veteran actor/ first time nominee Gary Oldman (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and Mexican-born Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”). “The Artist” also took home awards in two other major categories, Best Director and Best Picture. Many viewers snickered when the Oscars announcer teased a commercial break by saying, “With no clear favorite, anyone could win” leading into the bigger awards. Several of the winners at the 84th Annual Academy Awards were long thought to be foregone conclusions, but Best Actor was one of the more hotly contested, as both Clooney and Dujardin racked up several awards at ceremonies leading up to Sunday. The 39-year-old French actor and comedian spent this awards season accumulating victories at the AACTA, BAFTA, Cannes, the Golden Globes, Hollywood Film Festival, Independent Spirit Awards and several critical associations. “Key to the success of ‘The Artist’ is the work of its two French stars,” wrote the Los Angeles Times’ Kenneth Turan. “Dujardin and [B
MTV News visits the set of Odd Future’s brand-new video to figure out what the zany clip is all about. By Rob Markman Tyler, the Creator in Odd Future’s “Rella” music video Photo: Odd Future Records “I have a gay couple, it’s a bunny and a chicken, girls get slapped in the face and I snort a lot of coke.” That was the only way that Tyler, the Creator could described Odd Future’s latest video , “Rella,” when MTV News caught up with him and his merry band of musical misfits on the set recently in California. It may sound zany, but the clip for “Rella,” the first single off of OFWGKTA’s upcoming OF Tape Vol 2 comes as advertised. Directed by Wolf Haley (Tyler’s alter ego), “The Rella” begins with Hodgy Beats dressed in video game-inspired body armor busting through brick walls and running amok through a suburban neighborhood. “I’m just the n—a that comes through and f—s everything up,” he said. OF spitter Domo Genesis plays a much different, but equally animated role. “My character is like a ’70s-type pimp guy, and when people get out of line, I get to smack ’em in the face,” he told MTV News, before complaining about his ill-fitted wardrobe. “I’m enjoying that, the only thing that I’m not enjoying is that this sweater is pretty little.” Far from your standard hip-hop fare, “Rella” isn’t as awe-inspiring as Tyler’s VMA winning video for “Yonkers,” but it bucks rap rules all the same. Choosing to lay a comedic theme over the song’s bassy and sometimes sinister track, OF come off nothing like their contemporaries. On the song’s final verse, Tyler begins snorting an entire mound of cocaine (which we assume is fake), before a camera pan reveals the outspoken rapper/producer as a shirtless Centaur who wears a bobbed woman’s wig. Lyrically, “Rella” has no concrete theme; it’s just a spew of obnoxious rhymes, and the clip comes off pretty much the same way. Don’t confuse it with haphazardness, though: The three-and-a-half-minute video plays out just how the group intended. “Super Stoked About rella. Now Waiting For Someone To Say How It Coudlve Been Better Or Something, Even Tho They Cant Do Better Ayyye,” Tyler tweeted on Monday after he dropped a link to the YouTube video. Then on Tuesday, he addressed the video’s critics in a Tyler-like fashion. “Someone Told Me Today ‘ I Didnt Get The Video’. Its Nothing To Get, Its Just Random Thoughts,” he wrote on Twitter .”People Think To F—ing Much.” What do you think of Odd Future’s “Rella” Video? On Saturday, October 29th of 2011, “Chicken And Beef Present: Monkey Gang: The Mockumentary” had an exclusive screening at the Hollywood Black Film Festival (HBFF). The movie offers a satirical take on the negative elements of hip hop with a mock-documentary about a fictional rap group that seeks success by glamorizing drug dealing and violence. The creators of the movie managed to get reactions from many people in attendance including Jacqueline Blaylock, the director of programming for the festival. While some in attendance, believed the movie went too far and was too harsh on hip-hop culture, renowned blogger Jackie Jasper of Diary Of A Hollywood Street King appreciated the movie’s satire and parody of negativity in rap music and gave the movie two thumbs up.
