Fellow student charged with murder in the death of Pearland, Texas teenager

PEARLAND, Texas – A Pearland student is facing murder charges in the death of an 18-year-old classmate who went missing Tuesday afternoon. Police said Hermilo Vildo Moralez, 19, was identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of Josh Wilkerson Tuesday after officers noticed Moralez loitering in the area of Wilkerson’s abandoned vehicle. Wilkerson was last seen at his high school, Pearland ISD’s PACE Center, around noon on Tuesday. His parents reported him missing after finding his car abandoned at a shopping center in the 5000 block of W. Broadway. Police said they found Wilkerson’s shoes and backpack in a dumpster near his vehicle. When they initially questioned Moralez at the shopping center, investigators said he falsely identified himself and refused to give his address. According to court documents, Moralez told them he knew Wilkerson from school, and he’d seen him earlier that day. Once his true identity was discovered, Moralez was taken into custody and charged with failure to identify himself. Investigators, along with dozens of volunteers and members of Texas EquuSearch, launched a search effort for Wilkerson Tuesday afternoon. As their investigation progressed, police said Moralez agreed to cooperate with search-and-rescue activities. While walking with detectives through a field Wednesday afternoon, investigators said Moralez, who was handcuffed at the time, tried to pull a detective’s weapon from his holster. Moralez was immediately restrained and returned to the city jail. He was then charged with attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer. Wilkerson’s body was found in a field near FM 518 and FM 521 around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to court documents, Moralez told investigators that Wilkerson had given him a ride home from school Tuesday and made a pass at him. Moralez said he pushed Wilkerson off, and the two began to fight near the back patio of his father’s home. Moralez told police that during the fight, he grabbed a wooden rod and hit Wilkerson with it several times. He said when he got up off the ground, Wilkerson didn’t move. Investigators said Moralez then partially burned the body before dumping it in the field. When police found Wilkerson’s body, they noted that the teen’s hands and feet were bound, according to court documents. Investigators said they went back to the scene of the crime and found a large amount of blood on the patio and a bloody wooden rod in a nearby field. Moralez was charged with murder Thursday and was being held without bond. He is also awaiting trial on an unrelated harassment charge. added by: edbr

Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Inferno’ Director Admits ‘Exasperation’

‘But there is a tremendous gift underneath all the obvious baggage,’ Matthew Wilder tells MTV News of jailed leading lady. By Kara Warner Lindsay Lohan on set of “Inferno” Photo: TylerShields.com Lindsay Lohan’s return to jail on Friday (September 24) as a result of a probation violation has no doubt put another kink in the problem-plagued actress’ attempts to revive a once-thriving career. Specifically, production on the Linda Lovelace biopic, “Inferno,” which was set to begin filming in November, may be hampered by the ongoing legal troubles of its leading lady. Still, “Inferno” director Matthew Wilder, who has been unyielding in his support for his star, said the show will go on — with Lohan. “We love her. We want her to do well,” Wilder wrote in a statement e-mailed to MTV News. “We will make the picture shortly.” Wilder added that the film will now shoot in Los Angeles instead of Louisiana, as was originally planned. “I think [it] will make things easier on the Lindsay front,” he said. “I understand people’s exasperation,” Wilder admitted, referring to the former Disney darling’s string of questionable life choices over the last few years. “I share it. But there is a tremendous gift underneath all the obvious baggage.” During Lohan’s hearing on Friday, Judge Elden Fox did not hear any testimony from Lohan’s lawyers before denying the 24-year-old “Mean Girls” star bail and ordering her to report to jail. Lohan was reportedly handcuffed in court before being taken into custody, meaning she could be behind bars until the next hearing in the case, scheduled for October 22. According to the conditions of her post-rehab release, Lohan could spend 30 days in jail. She served 13 days of a 90-day jail sentence in July over a probation violation from a pair of 2007 DUI cases; she subsequently spent 23 days in a rehab facility, serving less than one third of her 90-day court-ordered sentence. Are you surprised that Lindsay’s “Inferno” director is standing by her? Tell us in the comments. Lindsay Lohan To Be Released From Jail

Actress will reportedly have to wear SCRAM bracelet again upon release. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan in custody on Friday (Sept 24) Photo: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department/ Getty Im Lindsay Lohan is expected to be a free woman once again after a second judge agreed with her lawyer that the actress is entitled to bail. Since Lohan’s jailing Friday (September 24), lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley was reportedly working to get her client the option of posting bail . The Los Angeles Times reports that on Friday afternoon, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Patricia M. Schnegg overturned Judge Elden Fox’s order and granted the actress $300,000 bail. TMZ adds that Lohan will have to be outfitted with a SCRAM bracelet within 24 hours and avoid venues where alcohol is the “chief item of sale.” Lohan sported a SCRAM bracelet this summer, which reportedly went off at a party, an incident that ultimately led to her July prison sentence. Lohan was sent to prison exactly one week after she admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test , the screening being one of many conditions the starlet had to adhere to after back-to-back stints in jail and rehab. Judge Fox ordered Lohan to be held without bail until a scheduled October 22 hearing in the case. The move was reportedly a tactic to keep the actress in prison instead of sentencing her outright, which might have cleared the way for early release due to overcrowding. “Ms. Lohan cannot be released early because this isn’t a jail sentence,” L.A. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore told People on Friday. “She’s being held by court order until her hearing on October 22. She will be held in the same conditions as her last stay, in a keep-away unit.” Lohan has been frank about her struggles with addiction and recently tweeted about her willingness to face the repercussions of her actions after reports of her failed drug test surfaced. “Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result,” Lohan tweeted last Friday. “Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn’t go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps forward every day. I am testing every single day and doing what I must do to prevent any mishaps in the future. … This was certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I’m prepared to face the consequences.” In July, Lohan served 13 days of a 90-day jail sentence over a probation violation stemming from a 2007 DUI conviction. She followed up the jail time with 23 days court-ordered rehab, a fraction the court’s original mandate of 90 days. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Jeff Schneider Ludacris Photo: MTV News Flying around the world, hanging with rich and powerful stars and getting paid gobs of cash to crank out hit records probably sounds like a glamorous and cushy gig. But take it from Ludacris, aspiring hitmakers can’t play around if they want to make their mark in the music game. The ATL star recently gave MTV News the low-down on how to hit high notes both on and off the charts. “Education is extremely important, especially in my business, the music business,” Luda insisted at a Get Schooled event on Friday, where Keri Hilson and MTV News’ Sway also schooled attendees on the value of education. “You hear a lot of the times that the music business is 90 percent business [and] 10 percent music. If you don’t have the right education and you don’t educate yourself, then you’re not gonna last in my business.” The advice may be hard to hear for budding entertainers who want to simply belt or bust some moves to achieve to musical greatness. However, Luda maintains his tough words are just about tough love, as he’s aiming to empower other people with the chance to realize their dreams. “I’m here today ’cause I’m one of those individuals that I dream my painting and then I paint my dream and I want to make sure I carry on that message to everybody,” Luda explained. “If I have the time to invest and make sure I give back — I have my own foundation — and I just love when a lot of different people come together for a positive energy ’cause there’s so many negative things going on out there. We gon’ send them a positive message today.” Stay tuned to MTV News for more information about how you can get the president to speak at your commencement celebration at the end of this school year. Actress leaves prison after posting $300,000 bail. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan at Beverly Hills Courthouse Friday Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images After spending less than a day in prison, Lindsay Lohan was released after posting $300,000 bail. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore told The Associated Press that the actress left jail around 11:40 p.m. Friday night. Lohan was jailed Friday morning, a week after the actress admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test . Judge Elden Fox initially denied the troubled star bail and she was immediately taken into custody following her hearing. The move was reportedly designed to keep the actress in prison until her upcoming October 22 court date and reduce the chance of an early release due to overcrowding. However, Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, later insisted her client was entitled to bail and a second judge, Patricia M. Schnegg, overturned Fox’s ruling. Lohan is still due back in court next month. TMZ reports that Lohan is required to wear a SCRAM bracelet and avoid venues where alcohol is the “chief item of sale.” Lohan is familiar with the alcohol-monitoring device as she was outfitted with a SCRAM bracelet in May, which reportedly went off at an MTV Movie Awards afterparty. After serving 13 days of a 90-day jail sentence and 23 days of court-ordered rehab, Lohan recently conceded that she was still grappling with her addiction issues. “Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result,” Lohan tweeted a week ago. “Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn’t go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps forward every day. Lindsay Lohan Reportedly Aiming For Early Jail Release

But L.A. Sheriff’s spokesperson tells People the starlet won’t be released until her October hearing. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan in custody on Friday (Sept 24) Photo: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department/ Getty Im Lindsay Lohan has returned to jail , an increasingly familiar place for the troubled starlet. However, the actress is reportedly trying to leave her new digs as soon as possible. Radar Online reports that Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, huddled with Judge Elden Fox and the deputy district attorney on Friday (September 24), hours after the actress was sent to jail for the second time in three months. “Lindsay’s lawyer is asking that bail be set,” a Lohan source told the website. “Shawn Chapman Holley contends that Judge Fox must grant Lohan bail pending the probation-violation hearing on October 22.” Lohan was sent back to prison after she admitted to failing a recent drug test . According to the requirements of her release after rehab, a positive drug and/or alcohol test is grounds for additional jail time. Judge Fox denied the “Freaky Friday” actress bail and she was handcuffed and taken into custody. Lohan is expected to remain locked up until her hearing next month. Lohan’s lawyer did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Although Lohan’s legal muscle is apparently pulling out all the stops to get her released early, authorities maintain the actress won’t be sprung until her next court date. “Ms. Lohan cannot be released early because this isn’t a jail sentence,” L.A. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore told People. “She’s being held by court order until her hearing on October 22. She will be held in the same conditions as her last stay, in a keep-away unit.” She may not be headed for an early exit, but her entrance into prison is similar to her last visit. “She’s now being processed through, she’s going to go through the same physical and mental evaluation,” said Whitmore, who noted that, “for the safety and security of the entire jail system,” Lohan will be separated from her fellow inmates. In July, Lohan served 13 days of a 90-day jail sentence over a probation violation stemming from a 2007 DUI conviction. She followed up the jail time with 23 days in a court-ordered rehab facility, less than a third of her 90-day sentence. CNN Hints Pope is Guilty of Mishandling Abuse Case, Leaves Out Details

CNN played an excerpt of its upcoming documentary “What the Pope Knew” on Thursday’s Newsroom (see CNN’s commercial promoting the documentary at right), and if this preview and its past coverage of the Church abuse scandal is any indication, the documentary left out key information in order to paint Benedict XVI in the worst possible light. Correspondent Gary Tuchman failed to explain how then-Cardinal Ratzinger’s handled a specific case from Wisconsin. Anchor Kyra Phillips introduced the excerpt from the documentary 24 minutes into the 9 am Eastern hour. The segment focused on the case of Father Lawrence Murphy, who was the priest and headmaster for St. John’s School for the Deaf in Milwaukee. Phillips noted that as many as 200 boys at the school were raped or sexually abused by Murphy and stated it was “one of the most notorious cases of sex abuse in the Catholic Church.” Tuchman interviewed Terry Kohut, one of Murphy’s victims. The correspondent stated that “fifty years ago, when he was just 10 years old, Terry, who is deaf, was sent to the St. John’s School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What happened there to Terry and up to 200 other deaf boys is now central to the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church, and to the question of what Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger, knew about it all.” This introduction gives the false impression that Ratzinger was a cardinal five decades ago, when he actually was a priest and college professor in Germany during the 1960s. After playing the first clip from his interview of Kohut, Tuchman continued that “Father Murphy has…been identified by dozens of deaf men who say he raped and sexually abused them as children for years. Father Murphy’s abuse would come to the direct attention of Cardinal Ratzinger, but his handling of the case would stun Murphy’s victims.” The CNN correspondent didn’t explain the then-cardinal’s handling (perhaps an explanation is given in the larger documentary), but only played a sound bite from David Gibson of the PoliticsDaily blog, who back in April 2008, at the time of the Pope’s visit to the U.S., accused Benedict XVI of irresponsibly exercising his office as pope . Gibson made a new accusation in his clip: “I think what the Murphy case shows is the d eference that Cardinal Ratzinger and Pope Benedict would always give to the priest .” Actually, then-Cardinal Ratzinger involvement in the Murphy case was minimal at best. Father Thomas Brundage of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee rebuked the New York Times and other media outlets earlier in 2010 for their sloppy reporting on the Murphy case. Fr. Brundage, who presided over Murphy’s canonical/church trial, stated that he had ” never once been contacted by any news organization for comment .” He also noted that he had ” no reason to believe that he [Cardinal Ratzinger] was involved at all . Placing this matter at his doorstep is a huge leap of logic and information .” Jimmy Akin of the National Catholic Register reported on April 5, 2010 that the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith (CDF), the Church body which Cardinal Ratzinger led before coming pope, held a meeting on the Murphy case in 1998. Ratzinger wasn’t even present at this meeting, which was led by his deputy, then-Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone. According to a memo from that meeting, Archbishop Bertone was ” appalled at how long this case [had] been allowed to linger .” Akin also explained that “the reason that the CDF was involved in this case is that it involved a priest accused of sexual solicitation in the confessional—not because it involved paedophilia. At the time, the CDF did not have a mandate to cover paedophilia (those were normally handled by the local bishop or, if appealed to Rome, by a different Vatican court—the Roman Rota).” The Register writer concluded that “[o]ne can still criticize the way the CDF handled the case, but the memo does not reveal a portrait of Bertone—much less Ratzinger—as unwilling to take action against Fr. Murphy .” At the end of his report, Tuchman asked Kohut why he was participating in the lawsuit. His answer: “I want the see the Vatican- because I’ve been waiting for all these years for them to excommunicate- defrock Father Murphy, but they haven’t.” Murphy died in 1998 , and as Father Brundage explained in his response to the New York Times, ” he was still the defendant in a church criminal trial ” at the time of his death. Defrocking or excommunicating the now deceased priest seems like a moot point. On May 3, 2010, Tuchman gave a report on Anderson Cooper 360 which tried to cast the Pope in the worst light possible regarding another abuse case, and omitted key details in that instance as well. This kind of slanted coverage is not at all surprising, given how CNN has run such reports on the abuse scandals since March 2010. On March 26 , Phillips used the scandal as a pretext to bring on three left-wing/heterodox Christians who all advocate radical changes inside the Catholic Church. She even gave their agenda her endorsement. On April 16, correspondent Jessica Yellin misleadingly asked , ” Why is he [Pope Benedict] having such a hard time saying he’s sorry? ” Phillips herself went further on June 11, stating that “we haven’t heard” the Pope say he’s sorry for the scandals. The full transcript of the segment from Thursday’s Newsroom: KYRA PHILLIPS: At a small school for the deaf in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as many as 200 deaf boys were raped or sexually abused by the priest and headmaster. It was one of the most notorious cases of sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Today, a CNN exclusive: the first interview with one of those victims, who’s now suing Pope Benedict. It’s part of a special CNN documentary examining what Pope Benedict did or didn’t do about this crisis. Our Gary Tuchman has the story. GARY TUCHMAN (voice-over): At a lakeside retreat in northern Wisconsin- KOHUT (to dog): Come. TUCHMAN (voice-over): Terry Kohut tries to escape his past. It isn’t easy. Fifty years ago, when he was just 10 years old, Terry, who is deaf, was sent to the St. John’s School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What happened there to Terry and up to 200 other deaf boys is now central to the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church, and to the question of what Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger, knew about it all. Terry Kohut has never spoken publicly about the horrors he endured at St. John’s. Until now. TUCHMAN (on-camera): What did he do to you? KOHUT (through translator): And then it was that afternoon, I went into his office. The door was closed, and Father Murphy said, ‘Take your pants down.’ TUCHMAN (voice-over): Father Lawrence Murphy was the headmaster and priest at St. John’s for more than two decades. He was a charismatic fundraiser and respected church leader. But Father Murphy has also been identified by dozens of deaf men who say he raped and sexually abused them as children for years. Father Murphy’s abuse would come to the direct attention of Cardinal Ratzinger, but his handling of the case would stun Murphy’s victims. DAVID GIBSON, POLITICSDAILY.COM: I think what the Murphy case shows is the deference that Cardinal Ratzinger and Pope Benedict would always give to the priest. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What actually happens in court- TUCHMAN (voice-over): Today, Terry Kohut is suing the Vatican for what Father Murphy did to him at St. John’s. His lawsuit is the first to ever specifically name Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict. Until now, Terry Kohut has been anonymous, named only as John Doe 16. KOHUT (through translator): Yeah, I was confused as to why it was happening. I mean, he was a priest. You know, I was trying to figure out what- I mean, I can’t believe a priest would do that. THUCHMAN (voice-over): The priest is believed to have picked out victims who were especially vulnerable, or had been through tragedy already in their young lives. Terry Kohut fit that pattern. KOHUT (through translator): My brother was electrocuted- died when I was 10. And when I was 11, my father hung himself. And at 12, my favorite dog died, and it tore me up. And I saw Father Murphy, and I thought that he could be a second father. TUCHMAN (on camera): Tell me why, Terry, you’ve decided to file suit- what do you want to see happen? KOHUT (through translator): I want the see the Vatican- because I’ve been waiting for all these years for them to excommunicate- defrock Father Murphy, but they haven’t.

Lindsay Lohan And E-Trade Settle ‘Milkaholic’ Lawsuit

‘The family is pleased that the case has been settled,’ Dina Lohan tells TMZ. By James Dinh Lindsay Lohan Photo: Mark Ralston/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan seems to be having her share of trouble with the law lately, but there’s one battle she has won. According to TMZ , the actress settled a $100 million lawsuit against E-Trade , which ran a Super Bowl TV spot that Lohan felt mocked her tabloid reputation. Lohan’s attorney Stephanie Ovadia revealed that the lawsuit had come to a close in a statement to TMZ: “The case between Lindsay and E-Trade has been settled … there is no further comment.” While no other details regarding the settlement have been revealed, Team Lohan is reportedly pleased with the suit’s outcome, even suggesting that the actress received an undisclosed amount of money from the suit. Dina Lohan shared her two cents on the lawsuit, telling TMZ, “The family is pleased that the case has been settled.” Representatives for E-Trade admitted to TMZ that they were interested in putting the case behind them, saying, “E*TRADE has always maintained that the claims were without merit, which is why we moved to dismiss the case. With the case now withdrawn, we are pleased to have the matter behind us.” Earlier this year, Lohan’s lawyer filed the $100 million suit in New York claiming that the actress’ name was used without her permission in an advertisement. In the spot, a female baby character named Lindsay is deemed a “milkaholic” while in the midst of a baby love triangle. “That milkaholic Lindsay wasn’t over?” the baby girl says, questioning why the baby boy didn’t call her. “Many celebrities are known by one name only, and E-Trade is using that knowledge to profit,” Ovadia told the New York Post back in March. “They used the name Lindsay. … They’re using her name as a parody of her life. Why didn’t they use the name Susan? This is a subliminal message. Everybody’s talking about it and saying it’s Lindsay Lohan.” Related Videos Lindsay Lohan: Crime And Punishment Related Photos The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court Related Artists Lindsay Lohan
