Drake Makes All-Star Return To Atlanta

Drizzy shared the stage with T.I., Future, 2 Chainz and Waka Flocka Flame on his Club Paradise Tour stop in Atlanta. By Rob Markman Drake Photo: Getty Images ATLANTA — Drake and several thousand of his friends partied hard in Atlanta on Sunday night when Drizzy brought his Club Paradise Tour to Aaron’s Amphitheater at Lakewood. The festivities started early as French Montana, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz and Waka Flocka Flame all rocked solo sets while the sun was still up and the crowd was filing in. Not even a few late-afternoon raindrops could dampen the electricity that seemed to only intensify as the evening beat on. Shortly after the sun set, at about 8:30 p.m., J. Cole took the stage to warm up the crowd for Drake, who would take the stage about an hour later. When the OVO general did emerge front and center, he was greeted with deafening screams as he quickly tore through tracks like DJ Khaled’s “I’m on One” and his own “Over.” After the Thank Me Later favorite, the crowd showered him with welcoming applause and the Toronto MC, of course, stood under the spotlight and soaked it all in. Drake has a genuine love for this city and paid homage to it on his 2009 mixtape cut “Houstatlantavegas.” “Atlanta, Georgia, for some reason, they kept us apart for like a year and a half, and I’ve been waiting so f–kin’ long for this show right here,” he said, noting the last time he was in the Southern rap capital. “Well, I go by the name of Drizzy Drake and I’d like to formally welcome you to the greatest motherf—in’ club in the world: Club Paradise.” For Drake, the purpose of Club Paradise was to bring the hottest hip-hop talent to one central place, and he didn’t disappoint. After he rocked joints like “Crew Love,” “She Will,” “Up All Night” and “We’ll Be Fine,” he rolled out the red carpet for 2 Chainz, and together the pair rocked to Deuce’s new single, “No Lie.” The crowd erupted but took it up another level when 2 Chainz rocked “Spend It” and then brought out T.I. for his remix verse. Waka Flocka strolled out next and he and Drizzy performed “Round of Applause” as fireworks shot out during the song’s hook. Drizzy then welcomed Future to the stage to perform their collaboration “Tony Montana” and then French Montana to do “Stay Schemin’.” The truth is Drake has a powerful enough catalog to hold down the stage by himself, but it’s always more fun with friends. For Club Paradise’s last act, the Young Money star concentrated his energy on his sophomore album, Take Care, performing “Over My Dead Body,” “Practice” and the Lil Wayne-assisted singles “HYFR” and “The Motto.” Tunechi wasn’t in attendance, but for the latter track, the crowd spit Weezy’s words on his behalf with precision. To close, Drake and the band that backed him the entire night launched into “Headlines.” It’s been almost two years since Drake last rocked Atlanta and judging from the crowd’s reaction, they clearly missed him a little when he was gone. Black Keys Warm Up Dreary Coachella Festival Friday

Swedish House Mafia brings the beats as first day of three-day desert festival suffers uncharacteristically low temperatures and drizzle. By Mary J. DiMeglio Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach performs at the 2012 Coachella music festival Photo: Getty Images INDIO, California — On a day that had festivalgoers packing ponchos instead of sunblock and the merchandise booths no doubt sold a record number of hoodies, the uncharacteristic weather at Coachella’s Friday kickoff was no match for the heat of the Black Keys . The Akron, Ohio, guitar-and-drums blues-rock duo instantly had the crowd in their hands, opening with the “Howlin’ For You” sing-along from their 2010 commercial breakthrough, Brothers . Announced earlier this week as headliners for Lollapalooza 2012 in August, the Keys also performed Friday night at Coachella in 2011, but this year, they were promoted to top billing. The pair wailed through the Grammy-winning “Tighten Up” and “Lonely Boy.” During “Everlasting Light,” a giant disco ball descended as frontman Dan Auerbach unleashed his falsetto. Auerbach asked the crowd to wish a happy birthday to drummer Patrick Carney before ending with “I Got Mine.” Swedish House Mafia closed out the main stage, proving that some EDM has outgrown the Sahara dance tent. The masses were jumping to the beats of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, who is also playing a solo set in the Sahara on Saturday (April 14). Angello will DJ a solo set in June at Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival . “I heard there was a rumor going around that the reason it was gray and muggy earlier is because there were two Sheffield [England] bands on,” Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker quipped, referring to earlier mainstagers the Arctic Monkeys. In the Gobi tent, Frank Ocean fans swooned over his take on Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing” and other cuts from his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra. The crowd excitedly welcomed Tyler, the Creator to the stage early in the set to growl his Odd Future “Analog 2” verses. Influential Swedish hardcore band Refused expressed gratitude for their long-awaited reunion, saying, “The reason we’re playing tonight is because Coachella invited us.” Their hour-long performance, which inspired lots of head-banging and moshing, included “Coup D’Etat,” “Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull,” “Tannhauser/Derive” and “New Noise.” Elsewhere, the Black Angels psychedelic blues — which included a sitar — didn’t draw nearly the crowd it deserved, Madness had the Outdoor stage skanking away and Rancid’s Tim Armstrong backed Jimmy Cliff on guitar. In response to last year’s event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — Coachella is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22. Still to come this weekend: Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, A$AP Rocky and the At the Drive-In reunion. Did you go to Coachella? Katy Perry Gets Medieval On Kids’ Choice Awards

Following her performance, she is presented with the blimp for Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie. By Katie Byrne Katy Perry performs at the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic When Katy Perry debuted “Part of Me” at the Grammys last month, music fans couldn’t help but focus on the new song’s vicious lyrics obviously pointed at a no-good ex (was it ex-husband Russell Brand ? Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy?). But at Saturday’s (March 31) Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards , Perry’s young fans were only focused on the song’s pulsing beat and catchy chorus. Even when Katy is getting serious, there’s always fun to be had. Case in point, her entrance: Perry descended onto the stage by flying over the crowd from the ceiling, brandishing a sword. She was joined onstage by dancers in medieval garb, which included puffy shirts and dresses covered in armor. When the bridge kicked in, Perry lifted a gigantic shield in front of her with a glowing heart in the center. While the medieval theme and dancing could have turned dramatic, especially when a dancer had his head and arms locked in a torture device, Perry got her hands on a pie and smashed it in his face. Following the performance, host Will Smith presented Perry with the Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie award for her work as Smurfette in “The Smurfs.” “Thank you so very much!” Katy told the crowd. “Listen: The only reason why I’m still here today — and remember this — is because I’ve never grown up! Thank you so much for this. I love you, and I can’t wait to do ‘Smurfs 2.’ ” This wasn’t Katy’s first time at the Kids’ Choice Awards : Back in 2010, she was the unlucky target of a green slime shower. “I can’t see anything,” she exclaimed after emerging from a puddle of the slimy goo. “Why does it taste like boogers?” Perry recently debuted the combat-heavy clip for “Part of Me” on MTV. In the video, she gets down and dirty with Marines as she works out her anger against the aforementioned no-good ex. So why did Perry choose a military theme? “It’s an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I ever could,” she said of the song. “Literally, I was like, ‘I’m gonna join the service. I’m gonna join the Marines.’ We used only Marines. … For three days, I was a wannabe Marine, which was so difficult.” What did you think of Katy Perry’s KCA performance? Let us know in the comments! Lil Wayne Brings His YMCMB Family To SXSW

Mystikal, Birdman, Cory Gunz and others help Weezy kick off his Mountain Dew partnership in Austin. By Nadeska Alexis Lil Wayne performs at SXSW on Thursday Photo: Hutton Supancic/ Getty Images YMCMB. Trukfit. DeWeezy. And repeat. When Lil Wayne took over the Austin Music Hall for his SXSW show in Texas on Thursday night, the rapper-turned-skateboarder had the venue draped in banners upon banners, shouting out his team, his new clothing line and his new partnership with Mountain Dew. Earlier in the day, Wayne invited his pro skateboard friends — including Paul Rodriguez and Theotis Beasley — to get their grind on on the top floor of the venue while the Mountain Dew-sponsored show was being prepped. By showtime later that night, the boys were all freshly prepped for their closing appearance at the concert. (For photos from the concert, click here.) And while Wayne saved his skateboard family to wrap the night, his YMCMB family members came out to open the show and made brief appearances throughout his set. U.K. singer Jay Sean hit the stage early, along with Lil Chuckee and recent Cash Money signee Mystikal, who gave the crowd a taste of his hits including “Here I Go” and “Shake Ya Ass.” Wayne finally hit the stage around 12:30 a.m., decked out in his Trukfit gear, with skateboard in hand, bringing a burst of energy for fans who’d already started a few “Weezy” chants in anticipation of his performance. He kicked things off with “I’m Goin’ In,” and “A Milli,” with head banging and dreads flying everywhere. During his one-hour set, Wayne gave the crowd some words of inspiration on falling and getting back up. “Life is like skateboarding,” he said. He later dropped another one-liner, “It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it,” admitting to the crowd that they’d just participated in a commercial shoot for his new DeWeezy campaign with Mountain Dew. With that out of the way, there were still plenty of hits left to go around, including “She Will” and “Blunt Blowin’,” plus a few more guest appearances. Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga were all noticeably absent from the show, but after giving them a shout-out, Wayne brought out a few more YMCMB members including Shanell, Bow Wow, Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine and Birdman, who performed his single “Y.U. Mad.” Despite Drake’s absence, Wayne delivered his verse on “The Motto” and saved Tha Carter IV single “6 Foot, 7 Foot” for the finale. Maybe the most surprising cameo of the night came from rapper Cory Gunz, who was recently arrested for gun possession. The young Gunz joined Wayne and his crew of pro skateboarders onstage to assist on the track before calling it a night.
