That’s Some Bull: New York Electric Company Charges Sandy Victims For Power They Didn’t Have

The Long Island Power Authority should be ashamed of themselves! According to The New York Post , they’ve sent millions of their customers ‘normal’ electric bills, as if Sandy and the power outages never even happened!?!? The clueless utility charged Sandy-soaked Long Island residents an estimated rate that covered the entire billing cycle, and the statements made no mention of potential refunds to account for the prolonged blackouts. Jonathan Saporta was slapped with a double whammy by the Long Island Power Authority — a $649 bill for the Long Beach home he left in October and a $281 bill for his new Great Neck pad. He also is expecting a $1,700 bill for his storm-ravaged restaurant, Jake’s Wayback Burger, which is in hard-hit Long Beach and remains without power. “I can’t get LIPA to acknowledge my existence on earth to talk to me about anything,” he ranted. “But I guess they had power, so they could print my bills. Nice, right?” Saporta, 33, moved to the Great Neck home on Oct. 1 and got the bill in the mail on Wednesday for a cycle covering 43 days — including the two weeks he spent in the dark following the Oct. 29 storm. Even though he switched his account to the new address on Sept. 26, he still received an e-mail bill for the Long Beach house on Nov. 10 — and somehow it was $390 more than the previous month. “I am not paying any of my bills, that much I promise,” said Saporta. “They can put me into collections, and I’ll fight them tooth-and-nail. “It’s simply criminal.” Michael Hilferty, 29, an attorney from Long Beach, was e-mailed his bill — which was about a dollar more than the previous month — as he chowed down on some turkey. “To get this message on Thanksgiving was crass and classless. It’s just heartless,” he said. His oceanfront building was flooded with 7 feet of water and inundated with 4 feet of sand, covering the LIPA meters. Hilferty left the apartment, which remains dark and boarded up, and has been staying in Connecticut. Yet he was hit for 29 days of electric usage, including delivery and system charges. David Wasserman, 40, of Merrick, tried to report online the difference between his actual and estimated electric usage. “I got some message that said, ‘Service records show your usage would be higher. Please call an operator for further assistance,’ ” he said. “No one ever picked up.” LIPA did not return repeated calls seeking comment. Con Ed, on the other hand, wants to refund its Manhattan customers who lost power $3 and customers from other boroughs who lost power $6, the utility proposed this week in a filing with the Public Service Commission. Those figures represent a portion of customers’ fixed monthly bills, which exclude power usage. This is just ridiculous. SMH Images via tumblr

Chris Brown and Drake Cleared of Charges in Club Brawl

It’s been a good Thanksgiving for Chris Brown. The polarizing singer spent the actual holiday hooking up with Rihanna , and then awake this morning to positive legal news: Neither he nor Drake will face any charges for a brawl that broke out in a NYC nightclub this summer between their entourages. According to TMZ insiders, the investigation into the bottle-throwing fight that broke out on June 14 is complete – and there is no evidence to charge Brown, Drake or anyone associated with either singer. The stars, of course, have clashed for months over their personal connections to Rihanna, and the rivalry reached its apex this summer when words and middle fingers were allegedly exchanges at at WIP nightclub. The Chris Brown and Drake fight resulted in a nasty chin gash for the Teem Breezy President, supposedly from a bottle thrown by someone at Drake’s table, along with various complaints and injuries from others at the establishment. San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker sued the club for a wound to his eye; he is seeking $20 million damages. However, law enforcement officials say surveillance video from the night is is blurry and multiple interviews conducted by the NYPD with witnesses have proven to be inconclusive.

Price is Right Model Wins Suit: "Wide Load" Brandi Cochran Awarded $777,000

Former Price is Right model Brandi Cochran sued the show for allegedly firing her for getting pregnant in 2010. This week, a jury sided with her to the tune over $777,000. The long-running game show maintained that many models have gotten pregnant while working on the show. Nonetheless, Cochran (left) won her lawsuit going away. That sum may still grow, in fact. The jury was swayed by Cochran’s claim that producers made comments about her pregnancy, including calling her derogatory terms such as “wide load.” If the jury determines that the comments of staff members were “malicious,” as opposed to merely negligent, she could be due an even bigger payday. It’s unclear what the timetable is for awarding additional damages in this case, but a representative of the production company says the case was flawed. The court didn’t even get to hear some favorable information that would lean toward the production company’s side, they say, and their side will still come out. How that could be the case after she’s already been awarded over three quarters of a million dollars, we have no idea. But don’t diss pregnant women, people. To use one of our favorite Happy Gilmore quotes , the price is WRONG, b!tches! Well, if you’re the show, anyway. Brandi’s probably pretty happy right now.

Michael Amir Williams, Michael Jackson Aide, Sues AEG For Hiring Dr. Conrad Murray

Michael Jackson’s personal assistant has filed a class action lawsuit against AEG, claiming he lost big bucks because of the company’s hiring of Dr. Conrad Murray. Williams and the rest of the employees connected with MJ’s ill-fated “This Is It” tour stood to rake it in three years ago, but obviously did not in the wake of his death. Thus, they want compensation from AEG . Like yesterday. According to Michael Amir Williams ‘ lawsuit, AEG agreed to pay MJ’s staff up to $7.5 million for their services connected with the 50-plus concert extravaganza. “This Is It” never took place, of course, because Dr. Conrad Murray pumped MJ full of Propofol and killed him. He was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Williams alleges is liable for damages by failing to act responsibly, hiring Murray in the first place and then failing to properly manage or supervise his actions. Whether a judge and jury agree is an open question.

What The Hell Magic?!?! Johnson’s Being Sued For Making Employee “Squeeze His Red Vines”!!

He said he fired her because she was 15 minutes late. LLS According to TMZ: Magic Johnson has been sued by a former employee who claims the NBA legend is SUPER SERIOUS when it comes to snacks … because he forced her to “regularly squeeze his red vines to make sure they were soft.” The woman behind the lawsuit is 45-year-old Lanita Thomas — who claims she served as Magic’s personal flight attendant on his private jet from 2004 until last month … when Magic fired her ass. In her suit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Thomas claims Magic was full of crap when he told her she was let go because she showed up to work 15 minutes late one day. Thomas claims the real reason Magic wanted her gone is because he wanted a “substantially younger woman” to service him in the air. In her suit, Thomas admits she WAS 15 minutes late to work one day … but says it was only because Magic insists on two specific types of turkey meat on his sandwiches … and she was held up at the deli counter. She also says Magic was “very particular that all snacks were fresh” … especially when it came to liquorice. *Editor’s note — stale Red Vines are delicious* In addition to wrongful termination, Lanita also claims Magic failed to pay her overtime and provide her with legally required breaks during her work shifts. She’s asking for unspecified damages. Calls to Magic have not been returned. We’re gonna call a foul on this one. Magic may have his own skeletons but we can’t picture homeboy posted up on his private jet making his flight attendant squeeze his ballz. Images via WENN

Britney Spears-Sam Lutfi Case: Justin Timberlake Breakup Blamed For Downward Spiral

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel married Friday in Italy, and have been together for so long that his serious relationship with Britney Spears has been all but forgotten. It’s been revisited in unlikely fashion, thanks to Sam Lutfi’s lawsuit against Britney. Lutfi says Britney overdosed on drugs , which he tried to stop, and that she owes him money for past managerial duties, along with damages for defaming him since. Her attorneys tell a drastically different story. Britney’s breakup with Justin a decade ago left her depressed and angry, the beginning of a downward spiral that lasted for years, an attorney for the Spears family said. In the defamation and breach-of-contract case brought against Britney and her parents by her Sam Lutfi , Leon Gladstone sought to portray Spears’ dad as her savior. Britney’s relationship with onetime fellow Mouseketeer Timberlake ” ended painfully ,” he said, after which her parents, Jamie and Lynne, noticed a change in her. “This is a story of a close family, but not a perfect one,” Gladstone said. “It’s a story of a man who actually wanted nothing more for his daughter than to live and be well.” “It’s a story of a father who has had to step up and take action that he never thought he would have to take… actions that didn’t perhaps endear his daughter to him.” Jamie Spears ultimately had to “force his daughter into rehab,” Spears’ counsel said. “He had to take her kids away. He had to get her into a conservatorship.” Britney underwent treatment at Promises in Malibu in early 2007 and ex-husband Kevin Federline was awarded primary custody of their sons, Sean and Jayden, that fall. The conservatorship was established in February 2008 after Britney Spears had been briefly hospitalized twice for psychiatric issues at UCLA Medical Center. At the same time, Jamie took control of his daughter’s estate, he and ex-wife Lynne (they have since reconciled) got a three-year restraining order against Sam Lutfi. They have accused him of manipulating their daughter and marshaling the paparazzi’s surveillance of her during the months he became her near-constant companion. According to the attorney, Jamie told Britney in 2077, “You are going to kill yourself or one of your kids,” and that’s when he pushed her to go to rehab. Britney flew to Antigua for treatment, but flew right back. Then she checked into Promises, but left after a day, prompting K-Fed to get permanent full custody. “To Jamie, this was a life and death battle,” he said, “and Britney at this point was at her most vulnerable – and at the point that she is at her most vulnerable, she meets Mr. Lutfi.” The rest, as they say, is history we’d rather forget.

Britney Spears’ Lawyers to Sam Lutfi: GTF Out!

Britney Spears’ legal team is ready to come out hard against Sam Lutfi and his lawsuit against her, vehemently denying that he was trying to “save” her from drug addition. Lawyers for Spears note that Sam Lutfi is suing her for damages, all based on claims that she signed a contract making him her manager in 2007-08. This is laughable for three reasons: Under his “management,” Britney Spears spiraled out of control and almost died; She probably lost money in that period, making it unclear what he would be owed; If he admits she was on hard drugs, how is she competent to sign any contract? Sam Lutfi claims, in any case, that Britney Spears was on crystal meth and other drugs and that he worked 24/7 to help her, only to have his efforts fall short. Lawyers for Britney and Lynne Spears will argue the complete opposite , that he plied her with drugs to control her and isolate her from her family and friends. Somehow we’re placing our bets on Team Britney here. [Photo: WENN.com]
