Lucky Don Says Maino Inspired Him To Leave Streets For The Studio

Brooklyn spitter tells Mixtape Daily success of onetime fellow inmate Maino proved he still ‘had a chance.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Lucky Don Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Lucky Don Brooklyn spitter Lucky Don had dreams that not even his 10-year jail bid could derail. “I knew how to rap before I went to jail,” he tells Mixtape Daily. “I always knew how to rap.” With the chips stacked against him, Luck found inspiration in BK rapper Maino , whom he met while the two were locked up in New York’s Gowanda Correctional Facility. (Luck was found guilty of shooting at a police officer.) “Me seeing him grow made me feel like I had a chance,” he said. With his mixtape grind in full swing after dropping last year’s DJ Self-hosted The Voice, Don linked up with his friend Maino, as well as Bronx rapper Fred the Godson on the TY Fyffe-produced “Let’s Go (Remix).” The original version of the song featured Luck by himself, and, at first, he set out to deliver his hardest raps over the bouncy club beat. But then he received a bit of friendly advice from the “Hi Hater” MC. “We met up on Atlantic and Bedford [in Brooklyn], I pulled up, put the CD in the car and we were just sitting in his car just listening to the beat over and over again,” Luck recalled. “He was like, ‘Nah, my dude; nah, son. This ain’t one of those beats — later for all that rap stuff right now.’ ” At Maino’s urging, Luck switched up his flow to something that matched the beat. The song soon became so big on New York’s underground that Maino agreed to jump on the remix. Now Don, who’s set to release his second mixtape, The Difference, in June, is finally seeing his dreams come to fruition. “I can’t even lie, I love music, I always loved music. I ain’t gonna sit here and front like, ‘I’m a street n—a and I never really wanted to do this.’ This is what I wanted to do. That other Luck that was locked up and all that, I left him back there. I came home to do music.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Maino

Emma Stone And Bryce Dallas Howard Bond Over ‘Spider-Man’ Role

New Gwen Stacy says ‘it was pretty great to be together’ on ‘The Help’ set when she learned the casting news. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Stone Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — In a weird twist of fate, Emma Stone found out she’d be playing Gwen Stacy in the latest installment of “Spider-Man” while on the set of “The Help” co-starring the previous franchise’s Gwen, Bryce Dallas Howard. “I found out while I was on set of ‘The Help,’ ” she said about the Andrew Garfield-starring “Amazing Spider-Man” during “The Help” Q&A session for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week. “It was pretty great to be together for that.” Howard said she was almost as excited about the casting as Stone was. “Representing as redheads!” she proclaimed onstage in front of an excited crowd at the Pacific Design Center. “I’m one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz,” she said, adding that she stormed into Stone’s trailer the minute she heard the news. “I was stoked.” With so much buzz about the new “Spider-Man” film, it seems that Stone will be just as surprised as fans to see the flick. “I’ve seen nothing, I promise. I’ve seen small action sequences for the 3-D, and it looked terrible,” she joked. “I really haven’t seen [anything].” So what did Stone do to research the role of Gwen — besides leaning on Howard for her first-hand account, of course. “I read a pretty comprehensive ‘Death of the Stacys’ book … and it’s a really amazing book to learn the story of Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy,” she said. “And I’ve read a various amount of comics.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? ‘The Help’ Stars Talk Tearjerkers At MTV’s Sneak Peek Week

Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard open up about book-turned-movie during Q&A session. By Jocelyn Vena Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard spoke to a packed room at the Pacific Design Center on Thursday night (June 2) for the latest installment in MTV’s Sneak Peek Week, opening up about retro tearjerker “The Help,” which screened to an excited crowd shortly before the chat. Since the book-turned-film is certain emotional, we asked its leading ladies if they ever reach for the tissues in the movie theater. “Oh, I cry!” Emma Stone admitted. “It’s shocking I’m not crying right now. I cried at ‘Air Bud.’ I cried at ‘Spice World.’ ” But what about when she watches her own movies? “That’s crying out of terror and self-loathing,” she joked. All joking aside, Stone is really proud of “The Help” and “felt it reflected the book.” “When you read the book, you have a vision of those characters too,” she said. “I definitely understand being protective of the material.” “The Help” is the film adaptation of the best-selling novel set in the South during the civil-rights movement. It stars Stone, Howard and Viola Davis and focuses on the bonds formed in the face of adversity. Stone is the flick’s protagonist, Skeeter, who works to make a change through writing a book about the hardships felt by minorities in the South during this pivotal time in history. “She’s a bit of a modern woman,” Stone said of her character. “When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a writer. She’s curious about people and she’s questioning her life.” Howard, meanwhile, plays the bigoted Hilly, and the actress said she latched onto something very specific about the character to make her relatable. “The thing I eventually grabbed onto was her ignorance,” Howard explained. “Once I understood, I then could attempt to play that character.” Stone used her costumes to help her get into character. “The accent is always a major concern, and then, of course, knowing how to be Southern, there’s a lot of challenges,” Stone said. “This is the first time I felt more in character after putting on the wardrobe. It was wonderful to have that.” Stick with MTV News all week as we gear up for Sunday’s Movie Awards with a Sneak Peek Week screening and live-stream Q&A session every night this week. MTV Movie Awards Gift Bag: Something Just For Robert Pattinson!

Jim Cantiello leads you through the year’s swanky swag before Sunday’s show. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello 2011 MTV Movie Awards gift bag Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News One of the benefits of being behind the scenes in the midst of the madness leading up to the MTV Movie Awards is our fly-on-the-wall vantage point, and we’ve been getting all kinds of insider glimpses into the prep work that goes into the show, including red carpets rolling out, sets being built and lights getting adjusted. On Thursday (June 2), in addition to chatting with host Jason Sudeikis and the finalists of “America’s Best Dance Crew” ahead of Sunday’s big finale, we sent our intrepid reporter Jim Cantiello into the swanky world of swag, where he got a sneak peek at the goodies that make up this year’s official MTV Movie Awards gift bag. One of Jim’s favorite things, i.e. items that were sparkly and/or eye-catching enough for him to pick up, included Murad’s bronzer, which he suggested would be a great get for Robert Pattinson and any of the other “Twilight” castmembers who play pale-skinned vampires. Speaking of “Twilight,” Pro Beauty Tools is gifting celebrities with a bunch of their professional hair-styling tools, the standout being the styling brush used on the set of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.” There are too many goodies to name, but a few of the other highlights include a $50 Starbucks card, Ralph Lauren Fragrances’ Big Pony Collection scents for men and the Romance and Summer Romance for women, a Kobo e-reader loaded with 100 books, a Casio TRYX camera and a two-night stay and specially designed bag from Andaz 5th Avenue. How does this year’s goodie bag compare to past years? Last year’s gifts included season-one DVDs of MTV’s hit “Jersey Shore” and fashion PR maven Kelly Cutrone’s book “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Steve-O Says He Should Top Justin Bieber For MTV Movie Award

By Kara Warner Steve-O Photo: Matt Elias/ MTV News One of the many ways the MTV Movie Awards distinguishes itself from all the other awards shows out there is the unique categories for which performances by actors, actresses and assorted moments in film are nominated and awarded. The is a perfect example. This year’s nominees run the gamut from cringe-worthy and painful moments to larger-than-life concert experiences, amazing special effects and being covered in poo. The nominees are: Natalie Portman for her hangnail moment in “Black Swan,” Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page for the dream-within-a-dream “caf

Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina Say They Won’t Stray From Country Roots

‘We’re country kids, so we’re gonna make country albums,’ Alaina tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, exactly a week since he was crowned an “American Idol” champion, Scotty McCreery told MTV News all about the plans for his debut album (and his thoughts on the whole “Country Bieber” thing, and it should probably come as no surprise to learn that he’s not planning on straying too far from his roots. “It’s gonna be a good ol’ country album,” McCreery said. “I like to have that old flavor in my music, but with a contemporary feel, so we’ll see where that leads me. I think it’ll a good little mix.” But, of course, it won’t just be McCreery releasing a post-“Idol” album: runner-up Lauren Alaina is already prepping her debut disc. And, if you watched the preternaturally perky belter during her time on the show, well, you can probably guess how her debut will sound. “We’re country kids, so we’re gonna make country albums,” she said. “I’m definitely going to have a country album, and if it crosses over, that would be great, but I like new, upbeat songs that people can dance to and sing along to, so, yeah, that’s where I’m headed, hopefully.” So for those keeping track, that’s two country albums coming your way soon. And, in keeping with grand “Idol” tradition, both McCreery and Alaina will begin work on their albums during the American Idols Live! Tour , a task, given their young ages, that would seem to be pretty daunting. But, as it turns out, they’ve actually gotten used to the grind; in fact, it started way back during their time in the ill-fated “Idol” mansion. “I write my own music, I really like to write,” Alaina said. “Scotty and I were actually writing a song together back when we were living in the mansion.” “We’re heading on tour and we’re going to be recording our albums when we’re out on tour, and it’s going to be a busy time,” McCreery added. “But we’re going to do our best to get the music out to you as soon as possible.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Robert Pattinson Should Host ‘SNL,’ Jason Sudeikis Says

‘We got you, buddy,’ MTV Movie Awards host promises. ‘You’ll be fine.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jason Sudeikis Photo: MTV News Fans would love to see MTV Movie Award nominee and “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson take a stab at hosting “Saturday Night Live.” Well, maybe when “SNL” castmember Jason Sudeikis hosts the Movie Awards this Sunday, he can convince the British heartthrob to come on the show next season. “I think anybody should host [‘SNL’] if it’s something they want to do. Just give it a shot!” Sudeikis told MTV News just steps away from the Gibson Amphitheatre, where the 2011 MTV Movie Awards will be taking place Sunday. “We’re certainly a safe place, a safe haven.” Sudeikis even had some encouraging words for the potential host: “We got you, buddy. You’ll be fine. Hold on to me tightly. We’ll take you through the forest of ‘SNL.’ ” As far as he can remember, Sudeikis has yet to introduce himself to Pattinson. Though he might have met him already — unless that person was actually the star of “Dexter.” “I think I met him in the evening of the Emmys, but at the after-after-afterparty,” he recalled. “So it may have been Michael C. Hall. They may have both been there. But no, it’ll be nice to see him. He’s never hosted ‘SNL.’ Him or Kristen [Stewart]. And Kristen I got to meet during the promos , but Robert I haven’t met yet.” In that promo, Sudeikis gives Stewart a haircut, but we’re not sure fans would be as comfortable watching the Movie Awards host chop off Pattinson’s famous locks. Justin Bieber In 3-D Is ‘Insane,’ Jimmy Fallon Says

‘Never Say Never’ star is up for Best Jaw Dropping Moment at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Jimmy Fallon Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber is known for making his fans scream their heads off whenever he’s around, so it’s no surprise that he’s up for Best Jaw Dropping Moment at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards for his 3-D concert spectacular “Never Say Never.” When MTV News caught up with two-time MTV Movie Awards host Jimmy Fallon on the Universal Studios lot, just a stone’s throw from the Gibson Amphitheatre where Sunday’s show will take place, he explained Bieber’s jaw-dropping abilities. “Bieber is just so jaw-dropping because Bieber in 2-D is enough, [but] Bieber in 3-D? Hold on to your horses,” he said of the pop superstar, who is up against James Franco (“127 Hours”), Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page (“Inception”), Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) and Steve-O (“Jackass 3D”). “It’s insane.” Fallon knows a thing or two about the Movie Awards, since he co-hosted with Kirsten Dunst in 2001 and returned solo in 2005. He’s pretty sure fellow “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Jason Sudeikis, who is tapped to host the show this year, has it in the bag when it comes to hosting. “It’s exciting. The Movie Awards are the most fun. Jason Sudeikis is a great host; he’s going to be great at it,” he said. “I’ve hosted in the past. I hosted with Kirsten Dunst. It’s just a blast. MTV just brings the fun back into movies.” Sudeikis may already know what he’s doing, but he did add some words of encouragement for his buddy: “Jason, you know what to do, buddy. Kick some butt over there.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. ‘Mortal Instruments’ Author Cassandra Clare Reacts To Jamie Campbell Bower Casting

Jamie Campbell Bower Photo: Tony Barson/ Getty Images “Mortal Instruments” actress Lily Collins has finally met her magical match in “Camelot” star Jamie Campbell Bower . Deadline Hollywood broke the news that Bower has been cast as demon-slaying Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in the big-screen adaptation of the first “Mortal Instruments” novel, “City of Bones.” Fans immediately took to Twitter to voice their reactions, with many concerned that the 22-year-old “Breaking Dawn” actor just didn’t look the way they imagined the character — described as a well-built, angelic-faced warrior. Yet, for Cassandra Clare, who’s penned four novels in the supernatural “Mortal Instruments” series, Bower couldn’t have been a better fit for the part. “His acting of the role is perfectly spot on,” she told MTV News of the audition footage producers sent her. In fact, Clare was so moved by the performance that she broke into tears. “I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen,” she said. Clare understands this sort of rabid (and often contentious) fan fervor, which has become par for the course for any YA novel getting the big-screen treatment. “I think this is sort of inevitable,” she said. “This is what happened with ‘The Hunger Games’ casting. This is what happened with ‘Twilight’ casting. I’m old enough to remember this is what happened with the ‘Harry Potter’ casting. The reaction is always worried because people feel very passionately about the books, and they just don’t want to see something that is going to mess it up for them.” And just as the naysaying died down after Jennifer Lawrence debuted her Katniss makeover for “Hunger Games” on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, Clare has a hunch that unconvinced fans will soon see things as she does. “I think in the same way that Jennifer Lawrence has transformed herself into Katniss, I think he will have no problem transforming himself into Jace,” she said. “One of the things about being an actor is that you’re a chameleon and you transform yourself. And actors have done amazing jobs transforming themselves in the past, and Jamie is really enthusiastic about the role.” Read our entire interview with “Mortal Instruments” author Cassandra Clare .
