‘It really wraps up the story in such a beautiful way,’ the ‘Twilight’ star tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Jackson Rathbone Photo: MTV News There’s plenty of “Twilight” goodness to look forward to at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , but what Jackson Rathbone is most looking forward to is the sneak peek of “Breaking Dawn” that his castmates Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will present during the big show. Rathbone shared his enthusiasm for the final two “Twilight Saga” films when we caught up with him on the set of his new film “Live at the Foxes Den,” describing the finale as “the culmination of this saga, and it really wraps up the story in such a beautiful way. We had the amazing [director] Bill Condon on, and I was very, very excited to play Jasper once again in these films and kind of step up.” Fans who have read the book know Jasper and his lady Alice (Ashley Greene) have a very significant role in the “Breaking Dawn” plot arc, but Rathbone said he was more excited to show off Jasper’s love and devotion to his family in the next two movies than he was for his beefed-up role. “There’s an amazing moment in ‘Breaking Dawn’ – I can’t say which movie, though. I’m sorry, I’m not technically allowed. But there’s a very fulfilling moment for myself as an actor and as a fan of the books and of the film series that you get to see, in the end, really how much these characters love one another and how much they function as a family, even though they are kind of an odd family of vampires. Vegetarian vampires, at that. They’re an odd bunch,” Rathbone said with a laugh. “But, I mean, the way they love and feel about each other and the way they protect and support one another I think is beautiful, so I think we’re going to get to see that happen in ‘Breaking Dawn.’ ” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? In ongoing ‘Seattle Sonics’ series, DCFC take us to a pair of venues that helped shape the band: Crocodile Cafe and OK Hotel. By James Montgomery Death Cab For Cutie’s Nick Harmer and Ben Gibbard Photo: MTV News All four members of Death Cab For Cutie grew up in and around Seattle, during a time that outsiders have since deemed “The Grunge Explosion.” But for those living around the city — particularly those not old enough to get in to most shows (thanks to the city’s now-abolished Teen Dance Ordinance ) — they didn’t know anything about an explosion. They just knew there were a ton of really great bands they were missing out on. And back then, as is still the case today, most of those bands played Seattle’s Crocodile Cafe, with gigs being advertised in the city’s late, lamented free paper The Rocket. And for kids on the outside, like DCFC’s Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer, both of those things were the source of never-ending frustration. “We both grew up in the Northwest, and we’d look at the shows at the Crocodile, seeing them in this weekly music magazine The Rocket, and be like, ‘Aw, I wish I could go to that show,’ ” Gibbard told MTV News. “But it was a 21-and-over venue at the time, so we couldn’t go, and all our favorite bands were playing [at the Crocodile], and we could never come see shows there.” But, as they got older, and formed Death Cab for Cutie in the college town of Bellingham, Washington, things started to change. The band started coming to shows at the Croc (Gibbard remembers seeing Bedhead with DCFC guitarist Chris Walla at the club in 1998) and even managed to score a gig or two there. And finally, at the end of ’98, they played a sold-out show at the legendary venue. It was, to say the least, a highlight, and the reason Gibbard and Harmer took MTV News to the Crocodile as part of our “Seattle Sonics” tour : The club played an integral part in their lives, both before and during Death Cab. “Every once in a while, people will ask, ‘Oh, what are the highlights of your band’s career?’ And without fail, I always reference the first time we ever headlined the Crocodile Cafe. … It was in, I think, December 1998, and it was on a weekend, a Friday or a Saturday, and we sold the club out,” Gibbard said. “There used to be a wall they’d put in that would diminish the capacity down to 300, from 600 or so, so we played a wall-in sold-out show, which still for us was a huge deal. And I remember coming offstage in the little backstage area that used to be here, between our main set and the encore, and becoming flushed with emotion, like, really, it was too much for me to handle, because I couldn’t believe we had done it. We had actually sold out and headlined the Crocodile Cafe. “And it was this turning moment, I think, for all of us. … We had this realization that, ‘Wow, we can really do this. We’re a real band. We’re not just four guys in a college town goofing off on the weekends and practicing after class. If we could get 300 people into this room to see us play, we can do it in Portland, we can do it in San Francisco. It can happen,’ ” he continued. “So not only was it kind of the fulfillment of a dream I’ve had since I was a teenager — since we were all teenagers — but it was a powerful moment for me, because I finally felt like we were on to something.” And while the band’s first-ever headlining gig at the Croc was a milestone (made even more because, as Gibbard beamed, “Afterwards I got to meet Peter Buck from R.E.M. in the bathroom”), there’s another venue in town that holds an even dearer place in their hearts: the legendary OK Hotel, one of Seattle’s most celebrated all-ages venue, since shuttered and reopened as a gallery space. Located in a decidedly seedy part of town — beneath a viaduct near the piers on Alaska Way — it was one of the few places where kids could actually go to shows and a stop for any band not yet big enough to sell out a 21-plus venue. Not surprisingly, Gibbard and Harmer spent plenty of time there, and they made sure to take us to the spot on their tour. “I saw Superchunk and Sunny Day Real Estate here, Low, bands I loved. This was a really important place for me, because as a kid, it made a real impression on me, seeing bands loading their own equipment and setting up their own stuff, because before coming to places like this, the only places you saw rock bands play were in arenas and large venues. I wasn’t used to seeing bands do it themselves. You heard about it, but you actually never saw it,” Gibbard said. “The only options to see shows as a teenager in Seattle were this place or bands that were so big they were playing arenas or a venue that was large enough to take out an insurance policy. So this was a venue where a lot of touring bands came through, because this was the only place you could do all-ages shows, legally.” But since he was still living with his parents across the Puget Sound in Bremerton, Gibbard never really got to see full shows. His curfew saw to that. But sprinting across the street to catch the last ferry home is part of the reason the OK Hotel will always hold a special place in his heart: It was a piece of his youth. “There’s a ferry terminal right across the street, and I had to be on, I believe it was a 10:50 ferry to be home by curfew,” he laughed. “So if the show started at 8 or 9 here, it meant I was running across the street to catch the ferry at 10:40 … so I have memories of going to see Superchunk here when I was 17 and hearing the beginning chords of ‘Package Thief’ and just running out from the venue, across the street and just barely making the ferry.” “Death Cab for Cutie: Seattle Sonics” concludes Friday on MTVNews.com with a look at the iconic Seattle studio where the band put the finishing touches on their brand-new album Codes and Keys. Lucas Till tells MTV News why the flick stands out in a summer stacked with superheroes. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Lucas Till Photo: MTV News During our recent sit-downs with the cast of “X-Men: First Class” — a prequel and the fourth film in the “X-Men” franchise — the talk focused not so much on how the latest installment differs from the first three, but rather what separates “First Class” from all the other superhero-style movies opening this summer. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender pointed to the film’s universal theme of struggling to fit in, for instance. For their co-star Lucas Till, what makes “First Class” stand out is how fans connect to the unique characters, whereas the competition often relies more on fun to pull in moviegoers. “I feel like the question I wished you would have asked me is, ‘How awesome does this summer look?’ Because you’ve got completely different things,” Till said when we asked what separates his flick from the rest of the pack. “With ‘Captain America,’ you’ve got a 1940s pulp-movie feel, and I feel like that’s going to be its own separate thing; fun and entertaining. And then you’ve got ‘Thor,’ which is, like, a cool ‘He-Man’ episode, which I was thoroughly surprised with. Then you’ve got ‘Green Lantern,’ which I thought was going to be stupid, but kind of looks like a cool cartoon. “This one,” Till continued, returning to “First Class,” “There’s so many metaphors to real life and there’s actual character development. I feel like you care about the characters, then there’s an ensemble cast, which they’re trying to do with ‘Justice League’ and ‘Avengers.’ Till suddenly spouting so many comic-book films both surprised and impressed his “First Class” co-star Rose Byrne. “You’re like a lexicon for superhero movies,” she said with awe. “You really are, you have an intelligent perspective and context for them; I don’t.” At which point their co-star Zo
Jackson Rathbone tells Twilighters, ‘We’ve got a lot of heavy competition this year.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Jackson Rathbone Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Hard-core Twilighters don’t need a reason to vote for “Eclipse” at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards , but if you’re torn, co-star Jackson Rathbone has some great reasons why you should help the third movie in the “Twilight Saga” take home some trophies at the show on Sunday. “We’ve got a lot of heavy competition this year — some Oscar winners, some amazing films, some amazing actors,” Rathbone said, reaching out to Movie Awards voters this week. “We’re just lucky to be in … contention, but y’all can help us out and go online and vote.” “Eclipse” is up for eight awards at the big show, including nods in categories like Best Movie, Best Female Performance, Best Male Performance, Best Breakout Star, Best Fight and Best Kiss, which has Kristen Stewart nominated for kissing both Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson ( Le scandal! ). And Jackson had one more push for the flicks. “Go out and vote and help us out. We need your votes,” he added. The “Twilight Saga” has had a quite a streak in recent years, taking home nearly 10 Golden Popcorn statues in all. And there’s a good chance the latest film will do well this weekend, when it will be up against a slew of other big flicks like ‘Inception” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” and “Eclipse” stars will compete against A-listers like Emma Watson, Zac Efron, Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg, to name a few. “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke recently told us she was excited to learn that the David Slade-directed film is nominated for so many Movie Awards. “I think it’s great. I love it that people are so passionate about it and that people are really into it and following the characters,” she said when we chatted with her about the June 14 DVD release of “Red Riding Hood.” “I think it’s a great tribute, obviously, to what [author] Stephenie Meyer created. … Rob and Kristen and everybody’s been able to just keep it going and keep people loving it all this time, and, of course, all the directors, everybody. I think it’s awesome. It’s great.” Hosted by Jason Sudeikis, the 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. ‘Don’t go halfway,’ Black tells the 2011 host before Sunday’s big show. By Jocelyn Vena Jason Sudeikis Jason Sudeikis is mere days away from taking the stage at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, to host the 2011 MTV Movie Awards this Sunday. We’re pretty sure he doesn’t need much advice — since he keeps the audience in stitches week after week as a castmate on “Saturday Night Live” and is bound to have everyone laughing in the summer comedy “Horrible Bosses” — but if he does need some last-minute words, MTV News caught up with some other funny guys to help out. “Don’t go halfway. Oh here it is: All of the f—ing way,” said Jack Black, who co-hosted the Movie Awards with Sarah Michelle Gellar in 2002. “That should be his mantra.” Need shorthand for that? Black added: “AOTFW.” While Seth Rogen seemed to be a little jealous of Sudeikis’ gig, he did have kind words for the host. “I don’t think he needs our advice,” Rogen said, with pal Danny McBride by his side. “I’ve been jockeying for that gig for 10 years, and he got it.” But what about some more advice from someone who’s been there before? Andy Samberg , who hosted the Movie Awards back in 2009, shared with MTV News some key steps to ensure a successful hosting gig. “What advice can you give to a guy that has it all? Be yourself, grab ’em by the scruff of the neck and don’t let go,” he advised. “Wear a nice suit. Hydrate. Crunches. Make sure ‘Twilight’ wins everything so the crowd is lively. Rig the results!” Another former host, 2010 emcee Aziz Ansari , had some different advice for the actor/comedian. “It’s so much work, so definitely have a lot of uppers on hand, like just drugs that’ll get you fired up,” he joked. “PCP is good to stay up all night, get all the work done. It’s a cool thing, though; it’s back in vogue. It’s like Twitter, PCP. It’s like trendy things: Twitter, PCP, Jonas Brothers.” The 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner? Before Sunday’s show, we ask which smooch should come out on top. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Kristen Stewart got to lock lips with both Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” and it seems like all the — cough, cough — hard work paid off: Both smooches are up for Best Kiss at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Movie Awards . We went straight to Stewart’s fellow celebs to ask: Which lip-lock should come out on top? “Vampire Diaries” star Kat Graham knows a thing or two about hot supernatural guys, and she has a very strong opinion about which kiss rules in “Eclipse”: “I love Taylor Lautner,” she gushed. “He could be making out with a hamburger, and I would be like, ‘Best kiss ever!’ ” Olympian Johnny Weir also seems to be a member of Team Jacob. “Taylor Lautner in that movie was, you know, rocking the sex,” he exclaimed, most likely referencing Lautner’s ever-present abs in the franchise. “X-Men: First Class” actress Rose Byrne is leaning toward Team Edward when it comes to the kisses, even calling out Pattinson’s fan-favorite nickname: “I think it will be RPattz.” Elle Fanning, whose sister Dakota stars in the “Twilight” flicks, concurred with Byrne, reasoning that Stewart’s Bella is “marrying Edward, so you sort of have to pick Edward.” “X-Men” hottie Michael Fassbender might not know Edward from Jacob, but he did pick one of the actors over the other. “I’m just going to go with Robert,” he said. Hilary Duff kept it right in the middle with her choice. “You’re really going for all the tough questions, aren’t you?” she teased. “In the first movie, it was better with Edward, and I think [then] it was better with Jacob,” she said. “Was that politically correct?” Stewart’s “Eclipse” kisses are up against Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Inception”), Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1”) and Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”). Gaga’s latest posted the 10th-biggest week in SoundScan history. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage By now, you’re probably aware that Lady Gaga’s Born This Way is the #1 album in the country, selling an impressive 1,108,000 copies in its first week of release. You’re probably also aware that her first-week tally is the highest in more than six years, since 50 Cent’s The Massacre moved more than 1,140,000 copies back in March 2005. But what you might not be aware of is just where Born This Way ‘s big debut ranks among the all-time greats. According to Billboard , since the debut of the SoundScan era in 1991, only 17 albums have sold more than 1 million copies in a week … and Born This Way ‘s bow lands on the very edge of the top 10. Ahead of BTW on the list are a myriad of albums from early-2000s teen-pop sensations, including two released from ‘NSYNC — No Strings Attached, which holds the record for the biggest one-week sales number in SoundScan history (it sold a whopping 2.4 million copies in 2000), and the follow-up, 2001’s Celebrity, which sold 1.89 million in a week — the Backstreet Boys’ Black & Blue and Millennium, and Britney Spears’ Oops! … I Did It Again. Eminem also placed a pair of albums in the all-time top 10 — 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP and 2002’s The Eminem Show — and 50 Cent and the Beatles are represented too. In fact, the top 10 is dominated by male artists: Only Spears (and now Gaga) have made the cut. And of the 17 albums to break the million mark in the SoundScan era, only five are by female artists, including Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard” Soundtrack, Norah Jones’ Feels Like Home and Taylor Swift’s Speak Now also accomplished the feat. So while Born This Way ‘s debut is certainly massive, it’s by no means the most massive … Here’s a look at the list of albums that have sold more than 1 million copies in a week, with sales data courtesy of Nielsen SoundScan. (And yes, Limp Bizkit is on the list.)
‘Harry Potter’ star calls the award, which he will accept June 27 at NYC’s Trevor LIVE gala, a ‘great honor.’ By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Here at MTV News, we’ve always been big Daniel Radcliffe fans, starting with the “Harry Potter” role that launched his superstardom and continuing with the successful acting career that has followed. However, recently, it is Radcliffe’s more charitable efforts that have been drawing our warm regards. Since 2009, the 21-year-old has been involved with nonprofit organization the Trevor Project , a suicide-prevention/ support group geared toward gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning teens. In recognition of Radcliffe’s awareness-raising efforts , he will soon take a break from his “Potter” promoting and Broadway duties to be presented with the organization’s Hero Award at the Trevor LIVE gala at Capitale in New York City on June 27. “It’s fantastic,” Radcliffe said of the award. “The fact that they think of what I’ve done by promoting awareness of the Trevor Project itself and the issues that it works to promote and help is a great honor.” The star-studded event will also feature appearances from Amy Poehler, John Larroquette, Janeane Garofolo, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos, Brad Goreski and more. “It is exciting to bring together so many talented individuals who support LGBTQ youth in crisis, including Trevor Hero Daniel Radcliffe,” said David McFarland, interim executive director and CEO of the Trevor Project. “Together, we are all working to give LGBTQ youth in crisis a chance at a future.” The Trevor Project was founded by filmmakers James Lecesne, Peggy Rajski and Randy Stone, who made the Oscar-winning short film “Trevor,” and it is the leading national organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths who need a no-judgment safe haven to turn to. Trevor LIVE at Capitale, presented by ING, is the signature annual event of the Trevor Project. The Pride Month event brings together top entertainers and corporate leaders to support the organization’s life-saving initiatives, including its free and confidential lifeline, suicide prevention workshops, community outreach, advocacy efforts and educational resources. Radcliffe is nominated this weekend at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards for Best Male Performance in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” Catch the show Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will present the clip live at Sunday’s show. By MTV News staff Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Since film fans made “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” the most nominated film leading into the 2011 MTV Movie Awards , we had to return the favor with some “Twilight” goodies during the big show. “Twilight” leading lady Kristen Stewart and her main men, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, will be presenting an exclusive clip from the saga’s highly anticipated fourth film, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” during the awards show, airing live at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For the die-hard “Twilight” fans who’ve been following all the news about “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” — for which we compiled this handy guide — the exclusive clip premiering during the Movie Awards will be the very first video from the film. Up until now, we’ve had to make do with production photos, teaser art and posters. MTV News recently caught up with Elizabeth Reaser, who plays Cullen matriarch Esme, to get her take on filming the two-part “Twilight” finale. “There was a lot of emotion,” she said during an MTV Sneak Peek Week screening of her latest movie, “The Art of Getting By.” “I mean, [for] months we had been through so much different weather craziness [in all different locations that] we were in denial of it the whole time.” She recalled saying goodbye to the epic five-movie saga while shooting the highly anticipated Edward/Bella wedding scene, even though her work on the film wasn’t quite over; she had to stick around a bit longer to finish up some shooting on the film. “Suddenly, we were on the dance floor at the wedding, and it was suddenly over,” she said. “It’s also 7 in the morning, and we had been shooting all night, so it was this weird, surreal experience. We were all in shock.” Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner will be in good company, when they grace the MTV stage. They join previously announced presenters and attendees, including Nicki Minaj, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Selena Gomez, Emma Stone, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Shia LaBeouf, Ryan Reynolds and Josh Duhamel. “Eclipse” leads the pack of 2011 MTV Movie Awards nominees with eight nods, including Best Movie, Best Fight and Best Kiss. “Inception” snagged the second-most nominations (seven), followed by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1,” which received six nods.
