David Letterman’s extortionist did the crime, now he’ll do the time. Robert “Joe” Halderman, the former CBS News producer who copped to one count of attempted first-degree larceny, was sentenced today to six months in jail. Money-grubbing mistress of David Boreanaz , take note. Robert Halderman could’ve faced up to 15 years in lockup had the case gone to trial. Instead, his plea deal ensures he’ll serve no more than the half-year term. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Charles Solomon also gave him four and a half years’ probation and ordered him to perform 1,000 hours of community service. Letterman blackmailer Halderman was snared in a sting operation . The 48 Hours Mystery producer was busted in October for trying to shake down Letterman for $2 million in return for keeping quiet about Dave’s affair with his former intern and Halderman’s then-live-in lover, Stephanie Birkitt . Owing thousands of dollars in child and spousal support to his ex-wife, Halderman approached him under the guise of selling a screenplay … to Dave’s own life. Rather than buying it to keep his liaisons a secret, Letterman blew the whistle, bluntly admitted on the air that he cheated on wife Regina Lasko, and moved on. Halderman’s moving on too … to the big house. Nice work, man!

Earlier today, married Bones star David Boreanaz admitted having an affair with an unnamed woman who he claims was trying to extort him for money. Now, his wife Jamie Bergman may sue the woman he had affair with. As a Utah resident, she has grounds to file a lawsuit for “alienation of affection.” Really. Jamie believes the chick – who TMZ reports is NOT Rachel Uchitel , who Boreanaz also slept with – intended to breakup her marriage, it’s so on. The David Boreanaz affair came to light after his former mistress contacted an attorney and threatened to go to various media outlets with her story. Naturally, that attorney was Gloria Allred. Boreanaz says he refused to cough up the money she wanted so he, took the David Letterman route, outed himself and now accuses Allred of extortion. Does Jaime Bergman have a case against David Boreanaz’s mistress? Allred who also reps Uchitel and helped the most notorious of the many Tiger Woods mistresses negotiate a mammoth settlement, denies any wrongdoing on her part and puts the blame for his actions squarely on Boreanaz. Gloria claims David’s lawyer, Marty Singer, tried contacting the mistress and only then did she get involved – and says she may have other “legal claims.” Singer responded that Allred’s claim is only that Boreanaz had promised the mistress that she was “exclusive” … even though she knew he was married. The woman had a very short-term liaison with Boreanaz – 2-3 times – after which he paid her money but she allegedly kept demanding more and more. Singer says on April 23, the woman left a threatening message that she had not gotten enough coin and was going public. On Monday, he says he got a call from Allred, who said woman was looking to get paid at least six figures. She then threatened to go public unless David upped the ante, Singer says, so Boreanaz told the story publicly Monday. But Allred is ready to fight back : “My client has not told her story, but now that Mr. Boreanaz is attacking her she has decided to tell the story of the relationship. The truth will come out.” The plot thickens! Stay tuned …

For the first time outside the comfort of his Late Show set, David Letterman addressed his recent sex scandal during a rare visit to Live with Regis & Kelly . After Regis Philbin posed a potentially awkward question about Letterman’s home life, Dave opened up with sincerity about cheating on wife Regina Lasko . “I don’t know if people know this, but I’ve had some trouble,” he joked. “You know when something like this happens – and mostly it was reckless behavior on my part – if you behave recklessly and it hurts your family, then of course it hurts you. “It was not a tragedy, it was just stupidity. And thank God, because we all know what tragedies are, and we all know how horrifying and scarring… and you can’t get beyond some of these. We all know what we’re talking about.” If nothing else, Letterman is refreshingly candid about his own failings . “You read about [these tragedies] every day. It’s just godawful. And when you’re a parent, this is your worst nightmare. So it wasn’t that, thank God.” What it was, Letterman continued uninterrupted about the extortion case that blew the lid off his affair with staffer Stephanie Birkitt , was stupidity. “It was stupid behavior … [an explosion] where you wake up every morning and you’re scared and you’re depressed and sad and you kind of gotta let that knock you down … and pretty soon you’ve gotta start knocking it down.” “And then when that happens, you’re able to take a look at the pieces left of your life, because you think an explosion has taken place, and you’re looking at the shards and you see, well, can we put this back together?” “By god, maybe you can put it back together, and maybe it won’t be the same, but maybe it’ll be different, maybe it can even be better in a different way.” “So that’s what we’re doing, we’re putting the thing back together to see what it will look like. Is it viable, is it something that can be satisfying, fulfilling.” Tiger Woods , take note. This is how you address your past transgressions if you want people to respect you again. We hope so.
