‘We got a lot of music ready to go,’ Prodigy tells MTV News of upcoming self-titled LP. By Rob Markman Mobb Deep Photo: MTV News Mobb Deep are free agents no longer. On Friday, the Queens, New York, rap duo announced their new deal with Sony’s RED Distribution. Under the terms, RED will distribute Havoc and Prodigy’s Infamous Records, where they’ll drop their self-titled album (their ninth), with Infamous Records functioning much like an independent. “The way we structured it is as a distribution deal basically, so we run our own label, Infamous, and we gotta do the daily ins and outs of everything. We gotta handle all the record company business and they get it in the stores for us, basically,” Prodigy told MTV News backstage at Rock the Bells in New York City on Saturday. “It’s been a long time coming,” Havoc added. “We’ve been in the game for a minute and the object of the game is to control your own business.” While allowing the veteran street-hop group to be their own bosses, the deal with Sony also puts Mobb Deep closer to their legacy. After the duo dropped their debut album on 4th and B’way in 1993, the Mobb signed with Loud Records, the Steve Rifkind-helmed label eventually absorbed by Sony. “Sony RED is a good company; they basically own our catalog anyway because when Loud sold the company, they sold it to Sony,” Prodigy clarified. “So they own all of our albums, basically. When we sat down with them, they basically were like, ‘We’d love to do this, we got your catalog anyway.’ ” For their upcoming LP Mobb Deep, the group aims to continue to build on that catalog, which already features such highly regarded albums as Murda Muzik and The Infamous, M-O-B-B’s sophomore album. The pair performed their second LP in full during Rock the Bells. Although the deal was just announced, P revealed that he and Hav have been working on the album since he was released from jail in March for gun possession. “Right now, it’s just a monumental thing for us, you know, it’s been a long time coming. We’re excited about it. We got a lot of music ready to go, we’ve been working on this Mobb album since I got home,” P said. “Everything is just up to par, the production — from Hav’s production to our lyrics to all the ideas from videos to everything — we’re just really ready to go and get things started.” As of now, there is no official release date for the Mobb Deep album. ‘Another label could’ve offered me five times what 50 offered me,’ Lo tells MTV News of his decision to sign with G-Unit. By Rob Markman Shawty Lo Photo: Getty Images 50 Cent continues to make news. Last week, Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo confirmed to AllHipHop.com that he and his D4L record label are officially signed to G-Unit. And on Wednesday (June 22), Fif took to Twitter to expound on the details of the deal. Apparently, the partnership is a 50/50 spilt. “Announcement: I have a vision for the music business I worked on this idea for some time now its called 50’s new 50/50,” Fif tweeted . “@thatsshawtylo Is the first to sign the deal. He is the head of his own label D4L record and is now being powered by G-unit. We provide a over head.” Next, 50 wrote : “For @thatsshawtylo co. After recouping promo a recording cost which is fairly low he splits all income from records 50/50 no 360.” Shawty Lo confirmed to MTV News early Wednesday (June 22) that the G-Unit General’s tweets were all accurate. “That’s basically right. He told you what it is,” L-O said. Lo, who is most known for his 2008 single “Dey Know,” released his debut solo album Units in the City with Asylum Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. When it was time to re-sign with the label, the rapper was fearful that he would end up with a dreaded 360 deal, where the label has financial stake in not only record sales, but touring and merchandising as well. “I’m just not a believer in a 360 deal. I feel like I can make my own money before I let a label come in a give me a 360 deal,” he said. “You don’t have to give me a whole lot of upfront money to do a 360. I don’t need that.” Instead, the trap rapper felt more comfortable doing business with someone he could relate to. “I just felt like 50 would be the best situation for me, man, because my life story came from where my life story came from: turning a negative into a positive,” he explained. “It feels like it’s familiar with 50’s life. That’s why I ran with him. Another label could’ve offered me five times what 50 offered me. I just feel like 50 was the perfect opportunity for me.” Now, he is looking forward to building his D4L Records label, which first came to fame in 2005, when the group D4L (Down 4 Life) released the #1 single “Laffy Taffy.” “My vision for the label is straight to the top,” Shawty Lo said confidently. “I’m working very hard to get my label to where I need to be. To be a big label in the South, all I needed was somebody behind me who could believe in me, who could relate to what I done been through, and I think 50 is the person to do it.” What do you think of 50 signing Lo? It looks like for once, a casting rumor may be true. According to “an individual with knowledge of the deal,” Gary Ross and the producers decided that Oscar-nominated Jennifer Lawrence had the right combination of strength and emaciation to play Katniss in the upcoming Hunger Games film, and her deal to star in the film is now confirmed per The Wrap. (Neither Lionsgate nor Lawrence’s reps have spoken officially about this report yet.) Obviously, we have our our own ideas about this, but chime in with your reactions. [ The Wrap ]
‘KStew is officially playing Snow White and her deal…will close next week,’ producer tweets. By Shawn Adler Kristen Stewart (file) Photo: Vogue/ Mario Testino She’s been wooed by a werewolf and fallen in love with a vampire, but it won’t be until her next movie that Kristen Stewart finally gets to meet Prince Charming. The 20-year-old “Twilight” actress has been officially named the fairest of them all in the revisionist fairy tale “Snow White and the Huntsman,” according to producer Palek Patel’s Twitter page . The confirmation ends weeks of speculation after news leaked in January that Stewart was being targeted for the role of Snow White . “KStew is officially playing Snow White and her deal is in final negotiations and will close next week,” Patel wrote in response to fan aurastew on Twitter. “Official confirmation coming next week,” Patel tweeted shortly after. “But we are in final negotiations.” Both tweets were removed from Patel’s Twitter page, but not before fans captured screen grabs of the revealing items. Based on the legendary fairy tale, “Snow White and the Hunstman” follows the titular princess after the evil queen Ravenna calls for her death, centering on the huntsman who disobeys orders and allows the fair maiden to live. The updated story will break from convention by having the huntsman mentor and train Snow White to fight off Ravenna herself. Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron are deep in negotiations for the roles of the huntsman and the evil queen, respectively. For Stewart, “Snow White and the Huntsman” will mark an immediate return to tentpole filmmaking after “On the Road,” based on the iconic Jack Kerouac novel of the same name, drops later this year. Directed by Rupert Sanders, “Snow White and the Huntsman” is scheduled for release on December 21, 2012. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Kristen Stewart
Judge tells Lohan if she pleads guilty to theft charge, she will serve time for probation violation. By James Montgomery Lindsay Lohan (file) Photo: Pool/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan arrived at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday morning (February 23) facing the possibility of jail time, after being offered a plea deal related to her alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace on January 22. She left without accepting the deal, and with the prospect of jail still very much in the cards. Lohan, who wore a low-cut black top to the proceedings, was told by Judge Keith Schwartz that if she does accept the Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Danette Meyers’ offer to settle the case, she “will be going to jail.” According to TMZ , the deal is for six months of jail time. Schwartz — who would handle sentencing if she accepts the plea — let it be known that he wouldn’t allow her celebrity to affect his decision, telling her, bluntly, “I don’t care that you’re Lindsay Lohan. “One of the things about me is that I treat everybody the same,” Schwartz continued. “What I look to in sentencing is, ‘What is the prior record?’ In this particular case, there has been so much speculation in the press [that] I’m just going to tell you a couple of things: If you plead in front of me, you are going to jail. There might be an issue about the amount of time, but if the case settles here, you will be doing to jail.” Schwartz said that if Lohan accepts the DA’s deal — thereby pleading guilty to felony grand theft — she would be found in violation of her probation and would serve time. He also recommended a psychological evaluation of Lohan to help him determine an appropriate sentence. After posting bail on the felony charge, Lohan took to Twitter to proclaim her innocence, and, with attorney Shawn Holley at her side, she maintained that tact on Wednesday. All indications are she plans to stand trial on the charge and, if found guilty, could face up to one year in state prison. Lohan is due back in court on March 10. But before then, Schwartz instructed both attorneys to meet and discuss the possibility of accepting the plea. Related Photos The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan
