Friday Box Office: Harry Potter Rakes In The Holiday Cash

As turkeys across the country begin their slow exit from protective custody and millions of doughy housewives proudly show off their flatscreen TVs purchased for only $299, the holiday box office has a clear winner, a strong upstart, and then a couple of real turkeys. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 continued its glorious reign at number one, while Tangled (gag me with that cruddy title) is making a strong go at number two. But if you were Cher, a boner pill-pushing Jake Gyllenhaal or the Rock, it was a Black Friday indeed for you. Your Friday box office is here.

‘Deathly Hallows’ Designer Reveals Scene Secrets

‘Harry Potter’ production designer Stuart Craig talks to MTV News about helping Harry retrieve Sword of Gryffindor from a frozen lake. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. In the weeks leading up to the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1,” fans were in a frenzy, trying to figure out just how much of the book would make the first film, which scenes would delight and disappoint, and what characters might not return ever again. And trying to get the tight-lipped folks in the Potter camp to discuss those key points was a bit of a struggle. However, now that the film has opened, MTV News has enlisted the expertise of longtime Potter production designer Stuart Craig for a few behind-the-scenes tidbits. Much has been said of the production moving away from Hogwarts and out on multiple locations, which Craig described as a “movie on the run.” “We made a very different kind of film, which was shot a great deal on location. We traveled quite far, we built sets, and they spend a lot of time in a forest,” he explained. “We built forest sets and integrated them into the real forests, so there were challenges there, as you might imagine.” Another one of the production’s major challenges — and accomplishments — was shooting the sequence in which Harry retrieves the Sword of Gryffindor at the bottom of a frozen lake. “There was a really demanding, complicated special-effects requirement there to do the ice,” Craig said. “I think that all works remarkably quite well, actually. Harry breaking the ice, diving in and then subsequently strangled by the Horcrux around his neck and is struggling and can’t get up quickly because of the ice above him. It’s good stuff.” Which begs the question: How did Craig and his team pull off that scene, and what do they use to make the ice look so real? “As always, well, as nearly always, there’s more than one solution. The camera on top, looking from the outside down on it. It’s big, thick sheets of Plexiglass with frosty texture on top of that,” he revealed. “When we’re underneath, it’s actually an area of wax which floats on top of the water. And wax makes very effective ice. They’re tried and tested movie techniques; there are a lot. You could write a book one day, a guidebook, to the very movie techniques — frost on window panes with some Epsom salts and brown nails.” One of the great pleasures in chatting with Craig, whose credits outside the world of Harry Potter include “Ghandi,” “The English Patient” and “Notting Hill,” is the fact that he has such an informed perspective on the inner-workings of the industry; specifically, how advanced film-making technology is now. “The great thing about movies these days is that you can fix everything,” he said. “I have to give a talk at a film festival early next month, and I’ve just been looking at films that I’ve done in the past. In particular, ‘Ghandi,’ years ago in India. The thing then was: If sometimes there was a compromise, it was filmed and it was there, locked. Forever. You look at the movie 20 years later, and there it would be. “These days, with visual effects able to do so much, you can do face replacement, you can put Dan Radcliffe’s head on somebody else’s body. There’s nothing they can’t do, it seems. I mean, at a cost, it’s not cheap, so terrible things seem to get fixed, which is very reassuring,” he added, chuckling. What Do We Make of Damon Lindelof’s Mea Culpa to Lost Fans?

Late on Friday The Daily Beast published an essay from former Lost executive producer Damon Lindelof about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I . The crux of it: Because Lindelof, a life-long Harry Potter fanatic, found himself hating The Deathly Hallows , he finally understood what it meant to be a fan. Specifically, he finally understood that the irate sect of Lost fans who hated the series’ ending had merit. “I sincerely and genuinely apologize to all those whom I have stripped of their Lost fandom just for complaining about the stuff you didn’t like. It doesn’t make you any less a fan,” Lindelof wrote. “In fact, it just makes you honest. I respect that. And I’m genuinely sorry for ever feeling otherwise.” Which begs the question: Why?

Malin Akerman Reportedly Replacing Lindsay Lohan In ‘Inferno’

‘Watchmen’ star will take over lead role in Linda Lovelace biopic. By Mawuse Ziegbe Malin Akerman Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images The onetime Lindsay Lohan vehicle “Inferno” has found a new face to heat up the screen. Malin Akerman will replace the troubled actress in the Linda Lovelace biopic, according to Deadline.com . Akerman is known for her roles in diverse fare such as the ensemble romantic comedy “Couples Retreat” and the superhero drama “Watchmen.” The Swedish-born star will portray late porn actress Lovelace, who rose to prominence for the cult 1972 adult flick “Deep Throat” before later speaking out against the porn industry. The replacement comes after Lohan’s highly publicized issues with drugs and stints in jail threatened to derail the project. The actress spent 13 days in prison in July for violating probation stemming from a 2007 DUI conviction after the alcohol-monitoring device she had been sporting since May reportedly went off at party, and a judge found that Lohan was skipping alcohol-education classes. She was later hauled back to prison for a day-long bid after failing a court-mandated drug test. Lohan is currently in treatment after a judge ordered the actress to remain in rehab until January. Despite Lohan’s legal woes, director Matthew Wilder had publicly stood by the actress. “We love her. We want her to do well,” Wilder said in a statement to MTV News in September after Lohan returned to jail for the second time this year. “We will make the picture shortly.” However, he did admit to being frustrated about Lohan’s ongoing issues. “I understand people’s exasperation. I share it,” he said. “But there is a tremendous gift underneath all the obvious baggage.” By November, Wilder conceded that the project would be moving on without the starlet. “We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan,” he told E! News on Friday. “We are currently in negotiations [with another actress] and working out the legalities of bringing her onboard.” The director explained that the inability to insure Lohan was a factor in the decision to continue the production without the embattled actress. “We have stuck by Lindsay very patiently for a long time with a lot of love and support,” Wilder said. “Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her — and some other issues — have made it impossible for us to go forward.” What do you think of Malin Akerman replacing Lindsay Lohan in “Inferno”? ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Debuts With $125 million

The latest boy-wizard flick sets franchise record. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ralph Fiennes in Harry Potter and the “Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. With the “Harry Potter” film series winding down, fans rushed to theaters to give the wizard adventure series a huge send-off. The seventh movie in the fantasy franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” opened with a fairy-tale figure of $125.1 million over the weekend. The flick powered through the past two days with stunning momentum, picking up $24 million at midnight screenings Friday and zooming to $61 million by the end of the day. The tally sets a record for the series, blasting through the previous “Harry Potter” opening-weekend, box-office benchmark of $102.7 million set by 2005’s “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” “Megamind” continued its comfortable fun in the top five, finishing the weekend in second place. The Will Ferrell and Tina Fey comedy about the antics of a CG supervillain rang up $16.2 million. The movie’s total estimated haul now stands at about $109 million. “Unstoppable,” arrived in third place. Audiences shelled out $13.1 million over the weekend to catch Denzel Washington and Chris Pine’s runaway-train thriller. The film’s tally now stands at around $42 million after its second weekend in theaters. “Due Date” wrapped up the weekend in fourth place. The comedic pairing of Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr. netted about $9.2 million, which bumps this film’s total gross to around $72 million. Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks’ jailbreak action flick, “The Next Three Days,” hit theaters in fifth place. Moviegoers plunked down around $6.8 million during the film’s debut weekend. ‘Deathly Hallows’ Midnight Screenings Cast $24 Million Spell On Fans

Latest ‘Harry Potter’ film scores third-biggest midnight opening in history, behind two ‘Twilight’ films. By Tom DiChiara “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” fans at a midnight screening in New York City on Thursday Photo: John Lamparski/Getty Images Like a fine wine, “Harry Potter” only gets better with age — at least when it comes to midnight debuts. The seventh film in the boy-wizard franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” conjured up $24 million domestically from early Friday morning (November 19) screenings, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com . In so doing, the film outstripped last year’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which nabbed $22.2 million from midnight showings, to land the #3 spot on the all-time list for midnight debuts. The only movies ahead of it belong to another cinematic series that has captivated teens: “The Twilight Saga.” Last summer’s “Eclipse” ranks first with a whopping $30 million from its midnight showings, and 2009’s “New Moon” is a close second with $26.3 million. While “Deathly Hallows – Part 1” didn’t exactly suck the life out of its vampire competition in the midnight-screenings department, the film is well on its way to a magical box-office run. Hollywood.com box-office prognosticator Paul Dergarabedian is forecasting an opening weekend well north of $100 million, which would make it only the second “Potter” film to achieve that feat (2005’s “Goblet of Fire” tallied $102.7 million in its opening frame). Other analysts are estimating that it could earn as much as $130 million, solidifying it a spot in the top-five opening weekends in history. So will “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” eventually beat out the franchise-topping $317 million domestic gross of the first film in the series, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”? Largely positive reviews certainly won’t hurt it. And neither will the fact that it is “Part 1” of the epic saga’s finale and should draw repeat viewings from fans who aren’t quite ready to say goodbye. Of course, any records “Part 1” does set will likely be broken when “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” hits theaters in July. Harry Potter Casts $24 Million Spell at Midnight

Even all those Muggles queued up at Mall of America couldn’t push Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to a midnight box-office record. The seventh film in the series pulled down $24 million, a healthy gross that nevertheless fell well short of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ‘s $30 million record in June. The film did break Eclipse ‘s IMAX record, however, surpassing the old $1 million watermark by $400,000. Only $106 million to go , team! [ The Wrap ]

‘Deathly Hallows – Part 1’: Everything You Need To Know

We revisit all of the magic that went into creating the first of the ‘Harry Potter’ series’ two-part finale. By Eric Ditzian Ralph Fiennes in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. After the first five films in the franchise cast a combined $4.5 billion spell on the movie-going public, it was inevitable: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” J.K. Rowling’s final, 759-page book in the boy-wizard series, was going to be split into two separate movies. ” ‘The Deathly Hallows’ is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that after discussing it with [Rowling], we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed to do it justice,” producer David Heyman said in a statement explaining the move at the time. The announcement came in March 2008, well before “Half-Blood Prince” added a cool $934 million to that already gargantuan total. Good call, Warner Bros.! Now, part one of “Deathly Hallows” is upon us, and MTV News has got coverage of the flick stretching back to when the one-into-two-movies decision became public. Before you hop on your broomstick and swoop into the multiplex — or, you know, just take a car — check out everything there is to know about “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.” The Split OK, so we knew the book would be divided into two movies, but the big question was where the first movie would end and the second begin. We put that query to Emma Watson , a.k.a. Hermione Granger, in ’08. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “I am as intrigued as you are. I am waiting at the moment to receive the script. It’s a tough call. I’m sure it will be some cruel cliffhanger.” Right. Later, director David Yates dropped us a hint about the split. “We’ve had three or four different ideas about where to cut off the seventh film,” he said. “Traditionally, the movies have ended with a death or a bereavement, some sort of passage or arrival. This time we think we will end with more a cliffhanger.” For a while, there was a rumor that “Part 1” would indeed end with a cliffhanger: Harry and his friends would be captured and brought to Malfoy Manor, but that didn’t turn out to be true. The film, it turned out, would end when Voldemort gains control of the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows that allow the holder to conquer death. And that, we learned after a recent screening, is exactly when the credits roll . The 3-D As “Avatar” made its record-breaking climb to box-office immortality, Warner Bros. announced that “Deathly Hallows” would be getting a post-production conversion to 3-D . ” ‘Harry Potter’ is already an epic film , but having that added dimension will make it even more epic, and that seemed like an opportunity that was too hard to pass up,” producer Heyman told us in March of this year. By that point, though, the conversion process still hadn’t been started. Would it be finished in time? And would the 3-D be high-quality enough to please fans jaded by substandard three-dimensional fare like “Clash of the Titans”? Apparently not. The studio announced in October that it was canceling 3-D for “Part 1.” “We do not want to disappoint fans who have long anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey,” Warner Bros. said in a statement. Staring Into the ‘Hallows’ The shoot got started in early ’09, and months before production wrapped, we’d already received our first official look at the film. It was rather uninspiring, a simple photo of Hermione, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Harry (Daniel Radcliffe). Eh. Thankfully, subsequent peeks at the flick more than fulfilled expectations. Look, there’s Harry with his trusty wand . There’s the first trailer , with a Voldemort vs. Harry throwdown and a peek at footage from ‘Part 2.’ And a snap of Harry riding shotgun with Hagrid. And a final, high-intensity, super-dark trailer . As Rufus Scrimgeour says, “These are dark times, this is no denying.” What the Kids Have to Say About ‘Potter’ The fun kicked off in London last week during the London red-carpet premiere , the boys looking spiffy in their ties and the girls all glam in their haute couture. MTV News traveled across the pond for some one-on-one time with the cast. Both Watson and Radcliffe had some funny stuff to say about their surprising onscreen smooch. “It was only the day before that they said, ‘Oh, by the way, we hope it’s all right, but we want you to be topless , and we’re going to cover you in silver paint,’ ” Watson told us. “It was awkward enough as it was without the silver paint and the strapless bra, but whatever. It works. It looks good for the story.” Said Radcliffe , “I thought it was going to be a kind of a slow, sensual thing, and Emma really went for it.” We flew back to New York for another red-carpet premiere, just days before Friday’s (November 19) release. “It’s sad, absolutely,” Radcliffe said about the series coming to an end. “[But] we’re going out on a high note. To sustain this level of quality for 10 years is a very rare thing in a big franchise. I think it’s us and ‘Toy Story,’ to be honest. I think we’ve done amazingly. I’m thrilled.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
