REVIEW: Less Magic, More Brooding in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter saga began as a series of children’s books and evolved into young-adult ones: The series grew up right in step with that first group of readers, even though, of course, people of all ages continue to love them today. The movies based on those books have offered a concurrent, dovetailing kind of pleasure: The joy of watching young actors grow up on-screen, learning as they go and, quite surprisingly, finding new dimensions in their characters each time out. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint — as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley — haven’t become worn out by their roles, as the admittedly older Twilight stars have. Who knows what their post- Harry Potter careers will bring? The body of work they’ve already amassed — up to and including this almost-final installment in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 — can stand by itself. Over the years, the magic in their bones has only grown stronger.

Daniel Radcliffe Was Elated For ‘Time Off’ After ‘Deathly Hallows’

‘One side of us was very sad to finish it all but on the other hand we had been filming for a long time,’ ‘Harry Potter’ star admits to MTV News. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News There have been lots of stories about the sadness and tears shed in the final days of filming on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” and “Part 2.” But castmembers also felt a bit of relief at having capped off a decade of “Potter” with an intense shoot on the final two films. “Whenever people say, ‘Oh, you must have been really sad on that last day,’ I think, ‘Well yeah. We were all knackered,’ ” Daniel Radcliffe recently told MTV News . “We were also quite happy to have some time off.” (In fact, Radcliffe had little if any time off as he had to fly straight to New York to present at the Tony Awards with Katie Holmes after shooting wrapped.)

Emma Watson Says Style-Icon Label ‘Makes Me Nervous’

‘Deathly Hallows’ star tells MTV News she’s flattered but ‘suddenly aware that every outfit I wear is being analyzed.’ By Kara Warner Emma Watson Photo: MTV News When audiences first laid eyes on 11-year-old Emma Watson in 2001’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” it’s doubtful many predicted the young star would become one of the most successful and highly paid actresses of her generation. Not only that, but the British ingenue has also become a budding style icon, nabbing ad campaigns for Burberry and getting involved with the fair-trade fashion brand People Tree. When MTV News caught up with the 20-year-old, we asked how she felt about the “fashion icon” label and whether having her face plastered all over magazines and blogs creates added pressure when she’s deciding what to wear. “I keep hearing that fashion icon thing and it makes me nervous, please don’t say that,” Watson pleaded. “It’s obviously a huge compliment but I’m suddenly aware that every outfit I wear is being analyzed.” Apart from her fancy red-carpet ensembles, Watson said she often dresses down. “I do when I’m at college. I don’t put in half as much effort as I probably should,” Watson said of her casual Brown University wardrobe. “I get very lazy. But I still try to have fun with it and try not to pay too much attention and kind of enjoy it,” she said. Speaking of having fun, Watson threw us for a loop at the U.S. premiere of “Deathly Hallows – Part 1” on Monday, when we told her that her Calvin Klein dress had gotten a 90 percent approval rating from our viewers. “Awww, really? Wow, that’s such a high percentage!” she exclaimed. “Wow, I aced it, obviously. That’s great.” Asked what might she do to get the full 100 percent rating, Watson had a surprising suggestion. “I don’t know, take it off?” she quipped. ‘Harry Potter’ Star Emma Watson Says Mom And Mia Farrow Inspired Haircut

‘I took in a picture of Mia Farrow and was like, ‘I want to look like this,’ ‘ actress says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Emma Watson had been wanting to chop all her hair off for years, but her decade-long commitment to “Harry Potter” required her to resemble a long-haired witch rather than a close-cropped pixie. As soon as production on “Deathly Hallows,” the two-part “Harry Potter” series finale , wrapped earlier this year, the 20-year-old Brit took a trip to the salon. The stylish results have been on full display as she works the publicity circuit on both sides of the Atlantic. In a recent conversation with MTV News, Watson revealed that the inspiration behind the new look has both familial and cinematic roots. “My mother has this haircut and this has been her signature look since she was, like, 16. I just always thought it was really cool and wanted to try it,” Watson told MTV News. “When I went in to my hairdresser, I took in a picture of Mia Farrow and was like, ‘I want to look like this.’ ” Little did she know how shocking the new ‘do would become. “I can’t believe how much of a stir this haircut caused. It’s pretty nuts,” she said. “The haircut has been a big deal.” And it’s been a long time coming. Watson’s hair simply hadn’t been her own since she joined the franchise as Hermione Granger at the turn of the millennium. She would have had to ask permission to get her locks trimmed — and she knew Warner Bros. would never OK such a drastic makeover. “I never even asked,” the actress said. “I just knew it wasn’t an option. Hermione is famous for this long, bushy brown hair, so I had to stick with it.” Now she views her new look as a sign that she’s embarked on a new chapter in her life. “I needed a change when ‘Potter’ was done, so I was like, this will be it to mark the new phase in my life,” she said. ‘Harry Potter’ Star Ralph Fiennes Embraces Voldemort’s Evilness

Franchise’s villain says ‘Deathly Hallows’ films are his favorites. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ralph Fiennes at the NYC premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic If there was an award for perfecting the art of unadulterated evil, Ralph Fiennes certainly should have won it by now. The Oscar-nominated actor first appeared as Voldemort in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” and the series has never been the same since. Voldemort gets more screen time than ever in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” (in theaters Friday), including one incredibly den-of-evil scene in Malfoy Manor. Because he has so many opportunities to be so bad, it’s unsurprising that Fiennes said that both parts of “Deathly Hallows” were his favorite two films to shoot.

Daniel Radcliffe Thinks ‘Twilight’ Spoof Won’t Bother Robert Pattinson

‘You cannot be in a film as big as either “Potter” or “Twilight” and not have a pretty good sense of humor about yourself,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Simpsons’ cameo. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Daniel Radcliffe has found Robert Pattinson’s rise to fame instructive. “I have no concept of what “Potter” looks like to the rest of the world, because I’m so involved in it,” Radcliffe once told us . “So to watch “Twilight” kind of explode globally had been fascinating.” Radcliffe also finds RPattz — his onetime “Potter” co-star — an appropriate target for some good-natured mockery. Earlier this month, the 21-year-old actor voiced a vampire character on “The Simpsons,” a pasty-faced heartthrob named Edmund directly inspired by Pattinson’s Twi-hunk Edward. Radcliffe hasn’t yet heard from his pal about the episode, but he’s pretty sure Rob didn’t mind the parody. “You cannot be in a film as big as either “Potter” or “Twilight” and not have a pretty good sense of humor about yourself,” Radcliffe told us. In the Halloween-themed episode, young Lisa Simpson falls for Radcliffe’s character after he saves her from an out-of-control school bus, a direct reference to the way in which Edward and Bella connect in “Twilight.” “I love your pallor,” Lisa coos. Radcliffe himself has found himself a “Simpsons” target in the past, with references ranging from a Homer Simpson pet pig named Harry Plopper to a religious-minded character noting Potter and his wizard pals are going to hell. “South Park,” too, has zinged “Potter”: During a send-up of “The Lord of the Rings,” one character mocks a group of kids for dressing up like the Hogwarts crew. Radcliffe thinks it’s all hilarious, and he’s sure RPattz does too. “I find it all so cool and funny and flattering,” he said. “I’m sure Rob’s got a sense of humor about [it]. “I’m sure I’ll be getting a bouquet of flowers,” he added.
