Wanda Sykes Talks Breast Cancer, Double Mastectomy

Appearing on Ellen this week, Wanda Sykes opened up about a deeply personal, scary experience from earlier this year: the comedian was diagnosed with breast cancer. She visited a doctor in February to undergo a breast reduction and, following a bit of lab work, was told she had ductal carcinoma in situ her left chest. “I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer,” Sykes said. Sykes was given a choice: Undergo a mammogram and MRI every three months to check on the disease – or have a bilateral mastectomy. She chose the latter because she now possesses “zero chance of having breast cancer,” and also, the actress joked, because: “I’m not good at keeping on top of stuff. I’m sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already.” Sykes is the mother of two-year old twins with her partner and said she wasn’t sure about telling the world about her ordeal. “I was like, I don’t know, should I talk about it or what? How many things could I have? I’m black, then Lesbian. I can’t be the poster child for everything. “At least with the LGBT issues we get a parade, we get a float, it’s a party. I was real hesitant about doing this, because I hate walking. I got a lot of [cancer] walks coming up.” LOL. We’re very glad to hear that Wanda will be okay.

Bruno Mars’ VMA-Nominated ‘Grenade’: Road To Video Of The Year

Clip also nominated for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his “Grenade” music video Photo: Elektra Records For Bruno Mars ‘ deeply personal breakup track “Grenade,” the pop crooner hooked up with a man who truly understands dark images: Australian music video director Nabil Elderkin, who has cooked up clips for the likes of Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Diddy and will.i.am. The duo created a clip that mirrors the heartache of the song, where Mars sings about loving someone who won’t love him back. The video dropped in November and has racked up hundreds of millions of views online. It’s also up for three Moonmen at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards , including Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. For those who have yet to check out the video, Mars pines over a lovely young lady. To prove his love for her, he puts on his Sunday best and drags his piano across Los Angeles, meeting up with unsavory characters along the way. When he does finally get to his beloved’s house, he sees that she is hooking up with another fellow. Heartbroken, he drags his piano away from the home, up one very difficult hill and ends up at a railroad track. Does a completely devastated Mars get hit by the train? Well, that’s the video’s great, deep, dark mystery. “It was my concept,” the singer told MTV News earlier this month. “I said, ‘I want to drag a piano.’ I got my friend Nabil to come direct it, and it was a risk because I still hear jokes to this day like, ‘What the hell you doing dragging a piano?’ ” he said. “But it’s my art, so shut up!” Mars, who hit the stage with B.o.B at the 2010 VMAs , is pretty stoked about having the video make the final cut as one of the nominees for Video of the Year . “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year, that’s the big-boy award.” Mars is also up for a Best Choreography VMA for his much-more-fun “The Lazy Song” clip. He’s also set to take the stage as one of Sunday night’s performers . The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Q-Tip Explains His Issues With A Tribe Called Quest Documentary

‘It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours,’ MC says of his concerns. By Jayson Rodriguez Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage Last week, Q-Tip stirred things up online when he tweeted that he was not in support of Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary . The MC and the director remained silent on the matter, refusing interview requests from a number of outlets. On Tuesday, however, Q-Tip appeared on satellite-radio station Shade 45’s morning show and explained his message. The veteran lyricist spoke with fill-in host Elliott Wilson of Rap Radar and said his opinion has nothing to do with his group being the focus of the doc, but with his role as a producer. “I’m a producer on this film; Tribe is a producer on this film,” he said. “When I speak, I’m speaking for the whole group. A lot of people think I’m speaking individually, even though I addressed it as ‘I’m not supporting’ it. In reality, as producers, there’s just different things that need to be done, edit-wise. The sentiment of the film is there. We feel like it’s 80 percent here. It’s just not there [all the way].” The Tribe MC said he and his groupmates have a final say over the project, per the agreement they made with Rapaport, an actor and first-time filmmaker. Although Tip wouldn’t specify the exact nature of his discomfort with the project, he said because the project is the first of its kind — “an extensive cinematic documentary about a hip-hop group” — it’s more than just a Tribe issue. “There’s so much riding on this,” he said. “It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours. So we got to make sure sh– is down right.” Will you check out the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Q-Tip A Tribe Called Quest

T.I.’s No Mercy: An Album Guide

Released as he serves an 11-month prison bid, Tip confronts his demons on introspective new LP. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. announced after his release from prison earlier this year that his next album would be titled King Uncaged, the Atlanta rapper explained that the project would touch on his time behind bars but also hark back to the themes of his earlier material, which leaned heavily on street narratives. However, when he was arrested again in October — and subsequently sentenced to 11 months in prison — Tip reconfigured the album, including a title change. No Mercy arrived in stores and online on Tuesday (December 7). If the LP’s new name doesn’t convey the sentiment of the project, the content certainly does. Throughout No Mercy, T.I. is equal parts repentant about his mistakes but also fiery as he attacks his detractors, accusing them of turning their backs on him during hard times that have included two jail stints in less than 12 months’ time. “No Mercy” On the title track featuring The-Dream, Tip strikes a good balance, looking in the mirror while also turning it around on those who can’t see past his success, where he says he’s actually battling demons. “There’s no mercy for me, no crying myself to sleep,” The-Dream sings in his airy falsetto. “No mercy for me/ Nightmares have become my dreams.” “His wife and sons and daughter know that every day he tried to be a better person,” Tip raps over the measured production. “All they want is better verses/ To market to the merchants/ But when it’s closed curtains …” “Get Back Up” The theme of clemency continues on “Get Back Up” featuring Chris Brown . The sprightly number is loaded with rhymes that lash out against the media and blogs, among others, but the lyrics are conveyed in melodic tones, hushing the vitriol. The Atlanta MC, though, also shows signs of accepting responsibility for his faults, behavior that he carried over from his days in the trap: “I admit, yeah, I done some dumb sh–,” he raps in the song. “Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me, though/ My road to redemption has no GPS/ So guess time must be invested for this to be manifested/ Yes, it’s hard living life in the spotlight/ Trying to dodge the haters the same time as the cop light/ The Bible says let he without sin cast the stone first/ The sinners are the ones that judge him, who was wrong first?” “Welcome to This World” No Mercy isn’t all gloom. T.I. is still an exceptional MC, and he holds his own lyrically with a list of guests that would excite a five-star hotel manager. On the brooding “Welcome to This World,” featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi, Tip and ‘Ye trade boastful verses about the high-life. “She coming home with me, she finnin’ meet her doom,” Tip spits. “She ain’t saying I’m the greatest, finnin’ to change her tune/ The coldest and the hottest, call me December and June/ Deliver euphoria straight to your room.” “All She Wrote” On “All She Wrote,” Tip and Eminem swap bars about spending time with the wrong woman. “Poppin’ Bottles ” After jumping on Drake’s breakout 2010 track “Fancy,” the Toronto MC reunites with Tip for “Poppin’ Bottles,” a woozy strip-club anthem. “Amazing” And “Amazing” is a bottom-heavy banger, courtesy of the Neptunes, that also finds Tip setting aside the album’s weightier themes. But the best work on No Mercy stems from Tip dealing with adversity . The rapper admitted to a pill addiction in a Vibe magazine cover story and recently penned a blog on his personal website confessing that he’s “sick and tired” of being in and out of prison “Castle Walls” He teams with Christina Aguilera for the deeply personal “Castle Walls.” It’s here that Tip confronts the consequences of his actions; a captivating documentation of this chapter in his life. “Honestly, to me, I think I lose every benefit/ Of all that I’ve accomplished if my kids never win at sh–,” he raps. “Me knowing this, why should the verse I laid/ Be more important to me than the persons I raised? “I guess I’m saying that to say that opportunity today,” Tip continues. “Don’t equate to all the time it takes away from your kids.” What do you think of T.I.’s No Mercy ? Justin Bieber Performs On ‘The View,’ Tells The Ladies He’s Single

For his second day on the show, Bieber performs ‘Baby.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber appears on “The View” on Monday Photo: ABC Justin Bieber had some of his biggest fans dancing in the aisles at Tuesday’s taping of “The View,” where he made history by being the first guest to make two appearances on the show two days in a row. On Monday he sat down with the ladies to chat about his rise to fame and perform an acoustic version of his track “Never Let You Go,” and on Tuesday he came back for a full-out performance of his single “Baby” off his sophomore release My World 2.0. His performance included a full band, DJ, back-up dancers and singers. But before he hit the stage and before the cameras started rolling, Bieber killed time by beat-boxing and joking around with his bandmates. As soon as the cameras started rolling and Elizabeth Hasselbeck gave him his intro, he went into full-on performance mode singing the track, rapping Ludacris’ part and even busting off some Michael Jackson-like dance moves. Bieber even serenaded a few of his fans in the crowd. After his performance was over, he remained onstage where he revealed he was single and wouldn’t mind dating a girl like Hasselbeck. When the show went back to commercial, he was seen hanging out with all the hosts, minus Barbara Walters who wasn’t on the show, and posing for pictures with them while fans in the stands tried to get his attention. When the show ended, Bieber gave a few extra high-fives to his band and left the stage, leaving his fans excited and wanting more. Ke$ha Clarifies Britney Spears Dis In ‘Styrofoam’

‘I do regret ever even singing that, because I have mad respect for her,’ she says. By James Dinh Ke$ha Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images On the heels of her apology to Justin Bieber for calling him “a tiny little baby” in the April issue of Maxim, Ke$ha is now taking back a few words regarding Britney Spears. In an old song called “Styrofoam” that surfaced online over the weekend, Ke$ha sings, “In 10 years/ Britney Spears/ Britney who?” But the singer, who did background vocals for Spears’ 2008 track “Lace and Leather,” explained the lyric in an interview with “So You Think You Can Dance Australia.” “Just to clarify, I didn’t write that bit,” she said. “And that was from when I was 15 — and there is a reason that song’s not on my record. So I have to admit now, I do regret ever even singing that, because I have mad respect for her. At the time, I was 15. I didn’t really have the balls to not sing it. That is why it’s not on my record. I can’t really stand behind it.” Dr. Luke, who has worked with Ke$ha and Spears, also got into the mix. In a tweet directed at Perez Hilton, the producer wrote, “Think that song was from like 4 years ago and a joke. 🙂 I don’t believe the Britney press stuff cuz I know she likes Britney.” But that probably isn’t going to change Hilton’s mind. In an interview with MTV News, the blogger expressed his extreme distaste for the “trash-talking train wreck.” “She upsets me,” he said. “I love Ke$ha’s music, but I don’t like her. I hate the stupid dollar sign in her name. I hate the stupid nose ring. I hate the stupid makeup. I hate the fact that she looks like she smells and never showers.” Ke$ha has not yet addressed a comment she reportedly made earlier this month over Spears lip-synching during her shows. “I don’t think that’s fair at all for people who are going to see the show,” she said. “I think if you are going to be a singer, you should sing. If you are going to be a dancer, you should dance.” What do you think of Ke$ha’s comments? Do you buy her apologies? Let us know in the comments! Snoop Dogg Compares Kid Cudi Video To ‘Romper Room’ Kids’ Show

‘It’s just me and him having a good time,’ Snoop says of ‘That Tree’ clip. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi recently shot the video for their collaboration “That Tree.” The head-nodding number, produced by Diplo and featured on Snoop’s More Malice, features the Doggfather and Cudi trading verses about their favorite smoke-filled pastime. According to Snoop, the video will be “Romper Room”-like, a nod to the famed children’s television series known for its organized-yet-free-for-all episodes. “It’s kind of hard to explain,” Snoop told MTV News about the concept. “It’s like ‘Romper Room.’ It’s kiddish. It’s really fun. Me and him like to have fun, so we wanted the video to depict that. It’s not a real serious video. There’s no champagne room. There’s no money being thrown or a bunch of girls. It’s just me and him having a good time.” The song is one of the additions Snoop’s re-released of ,i> Malice N Wonderland . The More Malice set includes the Cudi-assisted “That Tree,” the “I Wanna Rock” G-mix featuring Jay-Z and the movie version of “Malice N Wonderland.” The West Coast rapper spoke with MTV News last week and explained his decision to repackage his latest project with a film. “I like to be very creative,” he explained. “I like to give people all of Snoop Dogg when I give them an album. I felt like on the [ Malice N Wonderland ] record, I didn’t give all of Snoop Dogg like I really could have. I had to make the record be about 12 songs and conceptually stick to the script as opposed to what I normally do with 20 to 21 songs on the album and overdose people. So what I did [on More Malice ] was, I pulled back from the music and put a little more thought in the creative side as far as the visual aspects. Am I gonna just make one video and say, ‘This is the single,’ and hope that people attract to it? Or was I gonna make a mini-movie to make people understand the philosophy behind this Malice N Wonderland project, and that’s what I was on.” What do think about Snoop Dogg’s video idea? M.I.A.’s New Album Is ‘Weird’ And ‘Heavy,’ Says Diplo

Producer thinks Kala follow-up could come out in July. By Jayson Rodriguez M.I.A. Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic On Monday, blogs began noticing M.I.A. ‘s growing slate of summer festival gigs, which seemed to lend credence to earlier reports that she’d be releasing the follow-up to her Kala album in the coming months. And according producer Diplo , who worked on the album, that’s very much the case. Though it’s looking more like the record will see the light of day in July, rather than June as had been speculated. But that’s not all he told MTV News when we caught up with him last weekend in Austin at South by Southwest . “[The album] is cool. I think that she’s just wrapping up the mixing and stuff. I was in New York on Thursday, before I came here, I was mixing down the last single for it,” Dip explained. “It’s a record I did for her that’s sort of … you can’t even [explain] what it would sound like. It’s sort of like an Animal Collective/ gospel/ giant-drum record. And she’s singing on it. I think you might expect some rap/club music, but nothing on there. It’s more of a heavy record. All kinds of different sounds. We did, like, a punk thing. … It’s weird.” That assessment seems to be in line with what M.I.A. told British mag NME earlier this year, saying that her new album is “really odd” and “more musical” and features “no gimmicks.” And according to Diplo, those ambitions have made for a very interesting collection of songs. “It’s definitely more ‘vibe-y,’ I think. We’ll see if people like it,” he smiled. “My job is to kind of pull it together and make something of it.” Diplo singled out the track he had just finished mixing — a song called “Tell Me Why” — as a favorite, and said that the still-untitled album is very much an ambitious, deeply personal effort for M.I.A. ” ‘Tell Me Why,’ is great,” he said. “It’s a big, kinda giant-sounding record. … It sounds like some Wall of Sound, Motown kind of thing. It’s just me and Switch producing the album, and Blaqstarr did a couple of tracks, too. There are no surprise producers. No guest stars. It’s just her on it. She’s got a good attitude about it. She’s excited for people to hear it.” Related Artists M.I.A. Diplo

Rihanna Says Clip For ‘Rude Boy’ Is ‘A Pop Art Video’

‘It’s really colorful, really energetic,’ singer says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna in “Rude Boy” Photo: Def Jam Rihanna is returning to her Caribbean roots on her latest single from Rated R, “Rude Boy.” The Barbados-born singer’s earlier songs, like “S.O.S.” and “Dem Haters,” were tinged with island appeal. But since her breakout hit “Umbrella,” Rih Rih has leaned toward pop fare. Now with the release of “Rude Boy,” she’s returning to a familiar sound and created an accompanying visual she describes as one of her best. “It’s really colorful; it’s a pop art video,” Rihanna told MTV Korea. “We shot it all on green screen. Everything was done in post-production. It’s really colorful, really energetic. It was really inspired by my Caribbean roots. I love reggae music. [“Rude Boy”] is a Jamaican term, so our costumes are dancehall-queen-like. It’s a fun video. Probably the most fun video we’ve done so far.” The video recently premiered online and immediately drew comparisons to M.I.A.’s “Boyz” clip and Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance.” With its mix of dashing color and feisty attitude, the homage is apparent. The “Rude Boy” video and track also may be a preview of what Rihanna’s next album might sound like. She’s won critical praise for Rated R, the dark and deeply personal collection inspired by the aftermath of her assault by Chris Brown and subsequent breakup. For her next project, however, Rihanna said she hopes to keep the production tempo of her latest offering but mix it with more upbeat songwriting . ” Rated R — I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna explained. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, uptempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.” Related Artists Rihanna
