The Science of High Frame Rates, Or: Why ‘The Hobbit’ Looks Bad At 48 FPS

The hero of Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Petit Soldat declared “The cinema is truth, 24 times per second,” as The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw noted while pondering frame rates and cinematic standards last year. Peter Jackson insists that it’s closer to 48 frames per second , as demonstrated by the groundbreaking new frame rate he utilized for this weekend’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey . But do scientific theories about the way our brains perceive images and reality — truth unfolding onscreen, in front of our eyes — support Jackson’s brave new vision for cinema, or undermine it? There is a great gulf between the cinematic look of 24 fps, the traditional rate at which film images are presented in succession to simulate moving images on a screen, and 48 fps. The latter packs more visual information into each second of film, for better and worse . Jackson and his fellow HFR enthusiasts (including James Cameron and Douglas Trumbull ) argue that 48 fps and even higher frame rates result in greater clarity and a closer approximation to real life.  They also contend it reduces motion blur, thus improving the look of 3-D images. But scientists and researchers in the field of consciousness perception say that the human brain perceives reality at a rate somewhere between 24 fps and 48 fps — 40 conscious moments per second , to be more exact — and exceeding the limit of the brain’s speed of cognition beyond the sweet spot that connotes realism is where Jackson & Co. get into trouble. Movieline spoke with filmmaker James Kerwin , who lectured on the subject of the science of film perception and consciousness at the University of Arizona’s Center for Consciousness Studies . (His presentation included an analysis of the work of Dr. Stuart Hameroff and British cosmologist/philosopher Roger Penrose, and their quantum theory of consciousness.) According to Kerwin, there really is a simple scientific answer for why  The Hobbit ’s 48 fps presentation plays so poorly with some viewers — and it’s not something we’ll get used to over time. HOW OUR BRAINS PERCEIVE REALITY James Kerwin: “Studies seem to show that most humans see about 66 frames per second — that’s how we see reality through our eyes, and our brains. So you would think that 48 frames per second is sufficiently below that — that it would look very different from reality. But what people aren’t taking into account is the fact that although we see 66 frames per second, neuroscientists and consciousness researchers are starting to realize that we’re only consciously aware of 40 moments per second.” “Dr. Hameroff’s theory has to do with the synchrony of the gamma waves in the brain — it’s called gamma synchrony — the brain wave cycle of 40 hertz. There’s a very strong theory that that is why we perceive 40 moments per second, but regardless of the reason,  most researchers agree we perceive 40 conscious moments per second. In other words: our eyes see more than that but we’re only aware of 40. So if a frame rate hits or exceeds 40 fps, it looks to us like reality. Whereas if it’s significantly below that, like 24 fps or even 30 fps, there’s a separation, there’s a difference — and we know immediately that what we’re watching is not real.” HIGH FRAME RATES AND THE UNCANNY VALLEY “You’ve got guys like Cameron and Jackson saying, let’s make it more real because the more realistic, the better; the higher the definition, the more 3-D, the more this, the more that. They’re not taking into account what’s called The Uncanny Valley in psychology. The Uncanny Valley says that, statistically, if you map out a consumer’s reaction to something they’re seeing, if they’re seeing something artificial and it starts to approach something looking real, they begin to inherently psychologically reject it.” “Not every person perceives the Uncanny Valley, however. There are some people that just do not reject things that look too real, although the vast majority of people do experience that phenomenon. So you’re going to get some individuals who see it and go, This looks great! The problem is anecdotes are not evidence. You have to look at the public as a whole, and I think that’s what Jackson and Cameron are not doing.” FORWARD-MOVING HFR VS. TRADITIONAL FILM CONVENTIONS “There are all sorts of conventions in film that are not found in reality. People talk to each other in ways that they don’t in reality. Things are lit in ways that they’re not lit in reality. The make-up, the hair, the props, everything is fake. If you stand on a film set and you watch the actors performing, you don’t for a second think that it’s real. There are acting conventions that we have chosen to accept.” “One thing a lot of people are saying about The Hobbit in 48 is that the acting is bad — well, the acting’s not bad, they’re simply acting with cinematic conventions but it’s such a high frame rate that the motion looks too real and you can see through the artifice of the acting.” THE NECESSARY SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF — WHICH 48 FPS LACKS “It’s psychological: we need suspension of disbelief, and suspension of disbelief comes from the lower frame rate. The lower frame rate allows our brains to say, Okay — I’m not perceiving 40 conscious moments per second anymore; I’m only perceiving 24, or 30, and therefore this is not real and I can accept the artificial conventions of the acting and the lighting and the props. It’s an inherent part of the way our brain perceives things. Twenty-four or 30 frames per second is an inherent part of the cinematic experience. It’s the way we accept cinema. It’s the way we suspend our disbelief.” “Those high frame rates are great for reality television, and we accept them because we know these things are real. We’re always going to associate high frame rates with something that’s not acted, and our brains are always going to associate low frame rates with something that is not. It’s not a learned behavior; [Some say] you watch it long enough and you won’t associate it with cheap soap operas anymore. That’s nonsense. The science does not say that. It’s not learned behavior. It’s an inherent part of the way our brains see things.” James Kerwin is currently in development on an adaptation of R.U.R. Lala Tells Us What Her Definition Of “Whore” Means While Sticking Up For “BF” Kimmy Cakes

What would you do if you found yourself in this situation? We hear the word ‘whore’ a lot these days and LaLa thinks too many of us have become numb to it . LaLa Anthony made an appearance on The Breakfast Club and was giving advice to callers during part of the show. Everything was going pretty cool until a caller explained her situation; the young lady had a friend who slept around a lot and was getting called a whore. The caller felt like she was getting a bad reputation because she was still hanging out with her and asked LaLa how she’d deal with that situation since she’s “friends with Kim Kardashian”. Lala responded: “First of all, We joke around and have fun but I am really starting to get a little tired of people calling her that to me because if I was calling your friend a whore you wouldn’t like that would you? No matter what people’s perceptions are, I know my friend and I know her heart and who she is and she’s not a whore. We are all grown now! I can’t be responsible for what people think about other people, I go by how a person treats me and she’s always been an amazing person to me. As far as your situation is concerned, the same thing applies. We are all grown. If your friend has a bad rep, you can’t take responsibility for what your friend does, so you shouldn’t be grouped in that category because of what she does, you can only be responsible for your own actions…I think a Hoe is someone who has no morals or values when they do what they do. So I think a hoe is breaking up [a home]– knows a person is married and is messing with him. I don’t think a hoe is someone that sleeps around because if you are single and enjoying yourself, that is what you are suppose to do.” Well damn…what’s your definition of a whore and do you think LaLa should get the “good friend of the week” award for her classy answer? Will Playboy Reinvigorate Jenny McCarthy’s Career?

Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan and other starlets have proven that appearing in the men’s mag can do wonders for buzz. By John Mitchell Jenny McCarthy on the cover of Playboy magazine Photo: After flying a little lower on the celebrity radar, Jenny McCarthy has been grabbing headlines again for her upcoming Playboy cover . The TV personality and author is featured in the July/August issue in an eight-page spread she says she’s “really proud of.” But McCarthy is just the latest star to turn an appearance in the legendary men’s magazine into genuine buzz. The 39-year-old made her Playboy debut in 1993 and went on to become Playmate of the Year. Her star turn in the magazine soon caught the eye of MTV, who offered a much-sought-after co-host gig on the popular ’90s dating show “Singled Out.” Her effervescent personality made her a hosting favorite and she has continued her career in TV — she currently hosts NBC’s “Love in the Wild” — though her focus has turned in recent years to her work as an activist for autism issues. The interest around her sixth pictorial is sure to put her firmly back in the conversation after years of being best known as Jim Carrey’s former girlfriend and for her controversial stance on child immunization. If past Playboy centerfolds are any indication, this pictorial may be only the opening salvo in a reinvigorated career. From Lindsay Lohan to Kim Kardashian, an appearance on the cover of Playboy proved to be just the shot in the arm some starlets’ careers needed to get them back on track. Kim Kardashian (2007) Though she remains a divisive figure, Kardashian was known almost exclusively in late 2007 for one scandalous thing: her sex tape with Ray J. In October of that year, Kim, along with her very large and colorful family, debuted in E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” and one of the first topics the show dealt with was her decision to pose for the December 2007 issue of Playboy. The attention paid to Kim’s cover drove ratings for the show through the roof and now, five long years later, “Keeping Up” and its many spin-offs remain tent-pole programming for E! Since first posing, Kim’s decision to bare all has factored into yet another more recent episode of the show. Meanwhile, she and her family have started an empire, making millions licensing their image to myriad products and launching a clothing line and fragrances. Kim is even branching out into acting with a role in Tyler Perry’s upcoming “The Marriage Counselor.” Drew Barrymore (1995) Barrymore’s may well be the exemplar of a career that was rescued after an appearance in the men’s mag. The actress was the definition of trouble in the late-’80s and early ’90s: She rebelled against her family publicly, her teenage private life was tabloid fodder and she was plagued by serious drug problems and a flagging career. But in January 1995, she posed for the magazine looking happy and healthy and announced she was ready to get serious. That same year, she earned raves for her turn in Oscar-nominated director Herbert Ross’ “Boys on the Side” and followed it up with a role in Woody Allen’s underrated musical “Everyone Says I Love You.” In ’96, she shocked audiences in “Scream,” and two years later she found herself headlining back-to-back hits “The Wedding Singer” and “Ever After.” In the years since, she’s emerged as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, directed a major film (“Whip It!”) and even scored Golden Globe and SAG awards for her role in HBO’s Emmy favorite “Grey Gardens.” Lindsay Lohan (2012) Exactly where Lindsay Lohan is on her road to a comeback depends mostly on how you feel about Lindsay Lohan. Sure, her turn on “Saturday Night Live” wasn’t acclaimed , but it brought in huge ratings . She’s acting again, but her first big post-legal-troubles role is in a Lifetime movie , and there have been, ahem, issues . Yes, she’s booked a role in a buzzed-about indie film written by Bret Easton Ellis (“American Psycho,” “Less Than Zero”) and directed by Paul Schrader (writer of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull”), but she’s co-starring with a porn star . How above board can that be? Regardless of all that, the point is, Lindsay’s trying, and it all began with the January/February 2012 double issue of Playboy. Lohan channeled Marilyn Monroe’s old Hollywood glamour for the 10-page spread, which went on to be one of the magazine’s biggest sellers in years, prompting the magazine to return to the presses after it sold out in many markets. Chelsea Handler (2009) Things were going far from badly for Chelsea Handler when she posed for Playboy ‘s cover in December 2009. Indeed, with two best-selling books and a hit chat show on E!, things were pretty great. But looking back, the never-shy comedienne, who did not appear fully nude (only scantily clad) in her pictorial, has seen her career skyrocket so spectacularly in the years since that it’s hard to not see the photo shoot and, perhaps more importantly, the attitude behind its conception, as the very thing that has put her where she is today. Since 2009, her talk show’s ratings have exploded, she’s released two more books and been given her own publishing imprint. She co-starred, co-created and produced two sitcoms, launched a major stand-up tour and appeared on the big screen with Reese Witherspoon in the comedy “This Means War.” She is a media empire of her own creation, with Time calling her one of its “100 Most Influential People in the World” this year. Of course, this tactic doesn’t always pan out. Hoping to capitalize on the celebrity she developed on MTV’s “The Hills,” Heidi Montag posed for the magazine’s September 2009 issue. Just a few months later, her debut album, Superficial, badly failed to entice buyers, proving that the attention brought by a Playboy cover is really only useful when a star follows it up with something the public finds equally interesting. Do you think Jenny McCarthy’s Playboy pictorial will be good for her career? Let us know in the comments below!

Out Of Pocket: Racist GOP Radio Host Calls Barack Obama “The First Monkey President”

SMH: Arizona Republican radio host Barbara Espinosa not only exhibits her racism for all to hear, but then when challenged on her admission that she refers to President Obama as the “first monkey president,” she doubled down by quoting the definition of ”monkey” and then claimed she couldn’t be racist with the last name Espinoza. On her radio show, “Hair on Fire,” Barbara was taking a call from a listener who referred to Obama as a communist and the one with “rabbit ears,” when she decided to elaborate on the caller’s depiction of the president and offer her own racist view. This host proudly proclaims, “I voted for the white guy, myself.” Source

14-Year-Old Host Of Political Radio Show Says “Obama Is Making Kids Gay” [Video]

And we thought kids were more open-minded than adults. But it turns out there’s one young politically minded teen who isn’t so keen on Obama’s recent show of support to same-sex marriage . 14-Year-Old Internet Radio Host Caiden Cowger Declares “Obama Is Making Kids Gay A vehemently anti-gay radio show host is making headlines with his latest proclamation that Obama is “making kids gay” — and he’s only 14 years old. Caiden Cowger of West Virginia hosts the “Caiden Cowger” Internet radio show twice a week, where he gabs about his staunchly conservative political beliefs. During one of his recent broadcasts, which are syndicated by Spreaker Web Radio, the teen explains how he is “sickened” by watching some of his friends “turn to” homosexuality, which he says the Obama administration encourages. “They are encouraging kids to think, ‘Well, you know what? They’re talking about being a homosexual and they’re saying there’s nothing wrong with being gay, so you know what, I think I might try that out for a little bit,” Cowger says. “That is what’s going on!” The teen adds that the President should be urging young people to turn away from homosexuality, “a perverted belief.” Cowger added that he doesn’t believe in bullying his gay peers, but that the definition of bullying has been skewed. “When you’re trying to teach them the word of God and they consider that bullying … I find that a big problem, not being allowed to convert other people to my religion,” he said. On his show, the teen has interviewed former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain and John Raese, a Republican running to represent West Virginia in the U.S. Senate. Cowger identifies himself as a Pentecostal Christian on his Facebook page, where he also names Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck as role models. In March, Cowger announced he is writing a book, “Restoring America.” SMH man… We’d say this kid is a future wankster, but we’re pretty sure his classmates would tell us he already is one! There’s got to be better role models out there for teens than Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck to look up to. Source

Dear Bossip: My Husband Acts Like A Jerk Toward Me & He’s Told Me To Get An Abortion

Dear Bossip , I truly and extremely enjoy your advice. You’re honest, sometimes brutally honest, but I love and respect that. I’ve been married to my husband for two years. He’s got 3 older kids with his ex. We have one toddler and another on the way. This is the first marriage for both of us. I always dreamed my first marriage would be my only marriage because of my Christian beliefs, but now not so much. To make a long story short, after we found out I was pregnant, he was happy, but then arguments came. In my 1 st trimester he told me to get an abortion during every argument, which was about 7 times. I said very, very ugly things as well (i.e. deadbeat, bum, bish, etc). Then I broke my own cardinal rule after he started putting his phone on vibrate at night and I went through it. I found what I knew would be there, and so I stopped having sex with him and moved out. My final straw is the ex recently got out of jail and we’ve had altercations, and in one argument he stated he’s going back to his real family (they were never married or engaged). She also texts/calls him begging for sex, and for them to get back together. He says he ignores her. I don’t believe him and I don’t feel ignoring certain actions are good enough. I’ve filed for divorce. In the midst of all of this are the apologies from him and the promises to do better, and that he will not maliciously hurt me again. But, as you can see he kept doing it. He says he loves me (eye roll), but I don’t see it. Everyone that I’ve tried to talk to about this says I’m the bad guy and I shouldn’t give up and abandon him. Marriage isn’t good overnight, etc, etc. I do not agree with any of these people and I just want an unbiased opinion and to make sure I’m not crazy. Oh yeah, he also has never helped me with any bills that are mine, and before I stopped letting him use my car he would run out all my gas and only put back $20 worth. I’m no saint, but I have done right by him and I respect my marriage vows. I don’t talk to other men or my exes who still try to keep in contact. My past doesn’t affect him, so why do I have to deal with his? His ex has done/is doing ratchet stuff and it’s too much to name. He says get over it and let’s start over. I forgive him, but I don’t feel like I’m supposed to pretend to forget words that can never be taken back. Please help. – Husband’s A Jerk, Now What Dear Ms. Husband’s A Jerk, Now What , So, you married a man who has 3 other kids from another woman, and, for obvious reasons, they have to remain in communication/contact with one another (I digress), but, she’s asking for more, ANNNNNNNNDDDDDD, you went through his phone and discovered lawd knows what (you didn’t say what you discovered), he’s said to you on numerous occasions that you should abort his child that you are currently carrying, ANNNNNNNDDDDDDDD in an argument he’s said to you that he’s going back to his real family. Hmmmmm, why didn’t you pack his bags and help him move? If he’s so miserable and unhappy with you, and thinks he’s better off with his ex, then let him go. If he wants you to abort your child, and I’m certain it’s because the other 3 he has with his baby momma are kicking his butt in child support, then let him know (this is where you hold up your hand) that he now has 5 kids he’s responsible for. So, take his narrow ass and get a second job, and step up to the plate and take care of his responsibilities. But, let’s reflect on your letter. The issues with your marriage are several things which include miscommunication, disloyalty, mistrust, money, and unresolved issues with his baby momma. And, those key elements make a marriage, and unfortunately I wouldn’t say that you have a marriage. You’re just two people living together, and going through the motions of relationship drama like every other couple. You’re acting like little ass kids with one another and both of you are stomping your feet and pouting trying to get your points across. Instead of communicating with one another, like grown adults do, he’s trying to belittle and demean you with his tactic of spewing hateful things, and you up the ante with your name-calling trying to belittle and demean him. Each of you is trying to outdo the other. And, at the end of the day, what is this proving? What have you two accomplished? Yeah, just as I figured, not a damn thing! This is what I want you to do: Sit down with him and ask him what is a marriage? Ask him to describe it, and what it looks like. And, I want you to do the same thing. Let him know what your idea or thoughts are about marriage, what it looks like, and your expectations. And, it’s imperative that you listen to one another because arguing and trying to prove a point doesn’t work between you two. So, listen and if his definitions, expectations, and outlook on marriage are not your definition, expectations, and outlook, then you will have your answer. But, I want to know why didn’t you two go through marriage counseling before getting married? This would have resolved all of those issues before you walked down the aisle, and I’m quite certain that you wouldn’t have made it down the aisle if your husband hadn’t resolved the issues with his baby momma, his exes that he remains in contact with, and his need to demean and belittle you. So, why are you putting up with it now? Why would allow yourself to be made to feel less than, and from the man who is supposed to make you his queen, his woman that he protects, uplifts, and celebrates? I don’t believe in being with someone who is going to talk negatively about me or to me. That is a no-no! If you feel the need to call me out of my name, talk to me like I’m some damn child, and demean or belittle me, then you can sit there and talk to your own damn fool self. I’m out! DUECES! So, get into some couples therapy and speak with a marriage counselor. The root cause of your marriage is some unresolved issues that neither of you are putting on the table, and one of them happens to be his baby momma. If you don’t want her in your marriage, or your husband communicating with her other than to talk about his kids, then you’ve got to let him handle that with her. You knew what you were getting before you got married. So, that issue should have been resolved from the beginning. Now, he’s got to take care of business and put things in check. You and her are not going to be on the same page, and she definitely is not going to respect you and your marriage. She made that obviously known. So, your husband has got to get his damn balls out of his stomach, and be a man and let her know what’s what! And, hopefully you two can work out the other issues of communication, loyalty, money, and trust through marriage counseling. Don’t be afraid to open up and speak your mind. But, do it lovingly, and with an open heart. Don’t give up so easily on the marriage, not until you’ve exhausted all the resources. Besides, you did state that your first marriage would be your only marriage. Then work it out! – Terrance Dean Hey Bossip Fam, what do you think? Share your opinions and thoughts below!
