Carmelo Anthony To The World: My Wife Doesn’t Have Sh*t To Do With My Decision To Leave Denver!

Since the start of the NBA season the rumor mill has been spinning with talk of Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony wanting to be traded to another team. The second part of that rumor is WHY Carmelo wants to leave The Nuggets. Many have speculated that Anthony’s wife La La Vazquez-Anthony is the motivating force behind the move. Anthony was in good spirits while answering media questions following his 28-point performance in a 132-98 blowout of the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. But once he was asked about the perception that his wife was calling the shots on his NBA career, his mood instantly changed. “Y’all put this in bold words, La La has nothing to do with anything,” Anthony said. “Whatever is my decision, she is going to support me. She has nothing to do with me staying or leaving. Nothing. So please keep her out of it. Thank you. “People have to write about something and [they] come up with, ‘She don’t want to be here.’ She has nothing to do with that. This is my career. This is my decision. Of course, I got to consult her with everything. It wasn’t one conversation I had with her where she said, ‘Let’s get out of Denver.’ ” Uh ohhhh sounds like the media done pissed ‘Melo off! Like he said, it’s his career, his money, his decision. Wonder if La La took any offense to the way she was being talked about? Source

For Discussion: Do Couples Have A Better Chance Of Surviving Marriage If They Live Together First?

Practice usually improves performance. This seems to be true for sports, music, and dance, but what about marriage? The most significant change in family living over the past 50 years has been the rise in the number of couples who are living together prior to getting married. In the 1970s only about 10% of couples reported living together without being married. By the late 1990s, about half of women ages 15-44 reported that they had lived with a partner without being married. This has prompted scientists to ask the question, does practice living together improve marital relationships and reduce the risk of divorce? The answer seems to be “no.” Scott Stanley at the University of Denver and his colleagues studied people who were in their first or second marriages to find out how cohabitation influenced marital quality and the likelihood of divorce. For first marriages, people who cohabitate prior to marriage results in less positive interactions and more conflict when compared to people who do not cohabitate. However, people who cohabitate after becoming engaged look more similar to those who never cohabitate. In short, both those who never cohabitate and those who cohabitate only after becoming engaged have more positive marital relationships and are less divorce prone than those who cohabitate prior to becoming engaged. Stanley suggests that cohabitators who are not engaged drift into marriage without the same level of commitment as the other types of couples. The researchers also found that in addition to having lower quality marital relationships, couples who cohabitated prior to engagement were also more likely to divorce when compared with the other two groups. So what about second marriages, does this same effect appear? Among second marriages, cohabitation prior to marriage appears to result in lower marital quality regardless of whether the couple had become engaged or not. The researchers suggest that “engagement” has a different meaning for those contemplating second marriages and that sometimes the engagement period is a long period of time that reflects a reluctance to marry rather than a step toward marriage. Thus, some engaged cohabitating couples considering second marriages might be using “cohabitation” as an alternative to making a commitment to get married. We don’t know if cohabitation prior to a second marriage is related to divorce. Scientists haven’t looked at this issue. Commonsense would seem to suggest that cohabitation ought to provide a proving ground for marriage–a chance to work out the rhythms of getting along. This report by Stanley and his colleagues adds to a body of knowledge that has been accumulating for over a decade of research that seems to suggest otherwise. Successful marital relationships seem to be more than figuring out who takes out the trash and even how to resolve conflicts over who takes out the trash. Although learning to resolve differences is very important, marriage also includes an important dimension of “commitment” to the relationship that motivates couples to work on finding better ways to get along and find happiness. Green Day To Drop Awesome Live Album/DVD In March

While a track list isn’t available, band has hinted that ‘Cigarettes and Valentines’ could make the cut. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News For years now, Green Day have made a point of turning their live shows into all-out arena-rock events, complete with gratuitous pyro, even more gratuitous stage props (T-shirt launchers, toilet-paper guns, water cannons, etc.), and, of course, some good-old-fashioned crowd participation . And now, they’re packaging all that madness for the masses, with the appropriately titled Awesome as F—, a live CD/DVD set to hit stores March 15. That’s according to a spokesperson for their label, Reprise Records, though eagle-eyed fans probably could have guessed something was in the works as far back as August, when the band took to their Twitter account to announce, “We’ve been recording our live shows since the beginning of tour. Possible live album coming. A ton of songs!” In other tweets , they encouraged fans to bring “Awesome as F—” signs to shows and even hinted that a version of “Cigarettes and Valentines” — a song from their now-legendary scrapped album that pre-dated American Idiot, which they performed live for the first time during an August show in Denver — would appear on the album . Awesome as F— is already listed on Amazon.com as a two-disc set. At press time, a track list for the album was not available. Green Day’s last live album was 2005’s Bullet in a Bible, recorded at the Milton Keynes National Bowl in England. Last year, they also released a mini live set, Last Night on Earth, taken from a performance in Tokyo. Are you excited for the Green Day live album? Let us know in the comments! Carmelo Anthony trade rumors

Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony leaves the court following an NBA basketball game against the Orlando Magic Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, in Denver. Any other time, Carmelo Anthony’s(notes) balky right knee might draw more attention. Instead, the nagging injury took a back seat to a much bigger and broader question: Does the All-Star still want to be a member of the Denver Nuggets? Following a four-game road trip, Anthony insisted it was good to be home— even if he has no idea how much longe

Debate already aswirl for looming Civil War 150th anniversary

CHARLESTON, S.C. — At South Carolina's Secession Gala, men in frock coats and militia uniforms and women in hoopskirts will sip mint juleps as a band called Unreconstructed plays “Dixie.” In Georgia, they will re-enact the state's 1861 secession convention. And Alabama will hold a mock swearing-in of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Across the South, preparations are underway for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. And although many organizations are working to incorporate both the black and the white experience, there are complaints that some events will glorify the Old South and the Lost Cause while overlooking the fundamental reason for the war: slavery. “It's almost like celebrating the Holocaust,” said Benard Simelton, president of the Alabama conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “Our rights were taken away and we were treated as less than human beings. To relive that in a celebratory way I don't think is right.” Mark Simpson, commander of the South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, acknowledged that an event such as the Dec. 20 Secession Gala in Charleston is seen by some Americans as politically incorrect. But “to us it's part of our nature and our culture and our heritage.” “Slavery was a very big issue. Anyone who denies that has his head in a hole somewhere,” said Simpson, a Spartanburg businessman who counts 32 ancestors who fought for the South. “But slavery was not the single nor primary cause, and that's where the line gets drawn.” Read more: Debate already aswirl for looming Civil War 150th anniversary – The Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/nationworld/ci_16836311?source=rss#ixzz17uJXuTMH Read The Denver Post's Terms of Use of its content: http://www.denverpost.com/termsofuse added by: Radical_Centrist

World Bank-Funded Biofuel Corp Massacres Six Hondurans

Approximately six months ago, campesino farmers in Trujillo, Colon organized in the Campesino Movement of the Aguan, the MCA, were awarded provisional title to a farm which neighbors their community, as part of a long standing negotiation with Dinant Corporation, a biofuel company, whose land claims are illegitimate. Since that time, the small farmers worked the land. In recent weeks they had noticed incursions into their land by armed security forces employed by the biofuel company, Dinant. On Monday, November 15, the farmers went to their fields but were then attacked by Dinant security. Six were killed in the massacre and two more are in critical condition. The massacre occurred the same day that the de facto Honduran president Pepe Lobo had planned to meet with the director of the US government development fund, the Millennium Challenge, in Denver to ask for funding for so called “renewable energy” – in Honduras, principally biofuels and dams. World Bank And Other “Development” Groups Share Responsibility for the Massacre The “renewable energy” plan Lobo is shopping around may be the result of an Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) funded technical support grant (T-1101) to the de facto government ushered in after the June 28 military coup. In November 2009, under a coup government and amidst grave human rights violations, the World Bank's (WB) International Finance Corporation gave Dinant Corporation a $30 million loan for biofuel production, and now shares responsibility in the massacre. Policies supposedly intended to stop climate change are in reality fueling climate change. The world must invest in a renewable way of life, not destructive “renewable energy”. Scientists have analyzed that biofuel industry together with the climate change prevention mechanisms currently promoted could actually result in the destruction of half of the planets forests. In the same way that massacres cannot be stopped when justice systems are destroyed by military coups, the destruction of our planet cannot be stopped when the systems of governance have been hijacked by corporations who can buy off, or that failing, militarily intervene in nations attempting to build just forms of governance. Human rights and the environment cannot be separated. US Military Base Bought for Agrarian Reform And Stolen for Agribusiness During the past decade, campesinos in Honduras have challenged a series of illegitimate land titles obtained by agro-businessmen in a massive former US military training center known as the CREM. On this land, over 5,000 hectares, the US military trained military forces from across Central America, particularly the Contra paramilitary forces attacking the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. Once the CREM center's operations ended, the Honduran government bought the land from a US citizen through the Honduran land reform program. However, instead of being sold to small farmers, as the government was obligated by law to do, the land was illegally divided up between several large landholders as a result of corruption and fraudulent titling processes. A coalition of land rights organizations in Honduras organized in the Campesino Movement of the Aguan, the MCA, to challenge the illegal titles. Little by little the land titles were awarded to groups of campesinos organized in the MCA. The titling process has been slow and marked by violent attacks by the large landholders who have influence in the government, police and military forces. Among the last of the CREM lands to remain in the hands of agribusiness interests is the farm called El Tumbador, approximately 700 hectares controlled by the Dinant Corporation, property of Honduras' most powerful agro-businessman, Miguel Facusse. A biofuel businessman with interests in several corporations, Miguel Facusse is infamous for the use of fraudulent methods, including intimidation and violence, to obtain lands throughout the country. The World Bank Backs The Corrupt And Violent Dinant Corporation Since the military coup in June 2009, Honduras has been ruled by illegitimate, repressive regimes. In November 2009, the WB extended a loan of $30 million to Dinant for its biofuel production in that region, despite a widely documented history of violence and corruption by the biofuel company. The WB failed in its human rights obligations in this case and shares responsibility for this massacre. Given the conditions in Honduras, the WB must suspend both private and public sector funding to Honduras, and freeze funding of biofuels in the region. The biofuel industry in Central and South America violently displaces small farmers and contributes to global warming. Another multinational public fund that finances international private investment, the Interamerican Investment Corporation, has also recently funded Dinant. cont (Annie Bird is co-director of Rights Action , www.rightsaction.org .
