Surprise, Surprise: Darren Wilson Was Once An Officer On A Police Force Disbanded For Being Racist

Gee…what a shocker. Well no wonder he thinks he’s well within his right to shoot and kill unarmed Black kids…he’s been at this for a while. The entire police force he served on before Ferguson, MO was FIRED by the city for their racist practices and use of excessive force. Via NYDN : The white cop who killed unarmed black teen Michael Brown on Aug. 9 was once part of a Missouri police force that was disbanded over racial tensions in the community it served. Officer Darren Wilson was a member of the 45-employee Jennings, Mo., Police Department that was fired by its city council in 2011 and replaced by St. Louis County Police, the Washington Post reported. Wilson, 28, didn’t rack up any disciplinary issues during his tenure in Jennings, but the nearly all-white police force came under fire for its poor relations with the predominantly black community. “The straw that broke the camel’s back — an officer shot at a (black) female,” Rodney Epps, a Jennings city council member, told the newspaper. “She was stopped for a traffic violation. She had a child in the back (of the) car and was probably worried about getting locked up. And this officer chased her down Highway 70, past city limits, and took a shot at her. Just ridiculous,” Epps said. A black Jennings resident, Cassandra Fuller, said cops beat her in 2009 on her front porch after she joked about a car that crashed into her van in front of her house. “It’s like a horror story in my mind,” she said. “I never thought police would pull me off my porch and beat me to the ground, for just laughing,” said Fuller, who sued the department. Wilson, who was raised in Texas, was among the officers given the chance to reapply for their jobs, but he left Jennings for the nearby Ferguson Police Department. Of course he faced no disciplinary action while on that old force…he damn sure hasn’t faced any now after killing a child. There’s no telling what else he took part in in Jennings before taking his radical force and racist attitudes to Ferguson. SMH.

Crooked Cops: Head Of Mississippi Prison System Charged With Corruption

Hmm…bet those prisoners are going to love to get to know the man who once ran the system better… Mississippi Dept. Of Corrections Head Found Corrupt Via Gawker : Chris Epps resigned as head of the Mississippi Department of Corrections this week after more than a decade on the job. An indictment against him says he spent much of that time systematically robbing the state. The indictment alleges that Epps conspired to pass out public contracts with his department in exchange for kickbacks—”taking more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks over the last eight years in exchange for hundreds of millions of dollars in prison contracts.” The Clarion-Ledger gives an example of how brazen Epps was: In 2008, [co-conspirator Cecil] McCrory sold his commissary company at a big profit, and Epps approved reassignment of the no-bid contract to the new company. Shortly after, authorities say, Epps had McCrory pay off his home mortgage with three $100,000 cashier’s checks and a $50,000 check all spaced months apart. Epps can take heart in the fact that perhaps he will only be sentenced to spend time in the prisons that he himself ran in what was no doubt a caring and professional manner, and which are no doubt renowned for their safety and tranquility due to the masterful long term guidance of Chris Epps. Damn homie. Now why would you commit crimes when you KNOW how it is on the inside — you help set it up!! Gawker / AP

Race Matters: Study Shows Black People Experience Depression At Higher Rates Than Whites But Don’t Seek Help

Is mental health taboo in the African American community? Black People Experience Depression At Higher Rates Than Whites Depression is a huge health concern among African Americans — particularly women — but mental health is often stigmatized in the Black community. Although it can impact people from all walks of life, cultural habits and historical experiences can cause depression to be expressed and addressed differently among Black women. Via Psych Central reports: “During slavery you were supposed to be the strong one. You weren’t supposed to speak. You were supposed to just do,” said Esney M. Sharpe, founder and CEO of the Bessie Mae Women’s Health Center in East Orange, N.J., which offers health services for uninsured and underserved women. “…Our moms and our grandmothers always told us to suppress. Just be quiet, chalk it up, get up, dress up, fix your face, put on your best outfit and just keep going,” she said. Depression affects about 19 million Americans. Data from a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that women (4 percent versus 2.7 percent of men) and African-Americans (4 percent) are significantly more likely to report major depression than Whites (3.1 percent). But the CDC also finds that just 7.6 percent of African-Americans sought treatment for depression compared to 13.6 percent of the general population in 2011. Because the findings show that women — regardless of race or ethnicity — are more likely than men to experience depression and African-Americans experience depression at higher rates than Whites, then Black women in turn also experience high rates of depression compared to the general population. It should be noted that despite other studies showing conflicting data that are at odds with these findings, the CDC appears to be more reliable because it is the most recent study of its kind. Black women are among the most undertreated groups for depression in the nation, which can have serious consequences for the African-American community. “I’ve tried to commit suicide over 15 times. I have the scars on my arms of wanting to kill myself and not even know why,” said 45-year-old Tracey Hairston, a member of the health center who has bipolar disorder. A report published by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that poverty, parenting, racial and gender discrimination put Black women — particularly low-income Black women — at greater risk for major depressive disorder (MDD). Depression is not only treated at lower rates in the African-American community, particularly among Black women, but of those who do receive treatment, many don’t receive adequate treatment. Hector M. Gonzalez, Ph.D., and colleagues at Wayne State University, Detroit, found that overall, only about half of Americans diagnosed with major depression in a given year receive treatment for it. But only one-fifth receive treatment consistent with current practice guidelines. African-Americans had some of the lowest rates of use of depression care. Because Blacks, particularly Black women, experience higher rates of depression than their White female or Black male counterparts but receive lower rates of adequate treatment, they remain one of the most undertreated groups in the United States. Several major reasons account for high rates of depression and low rates of treatment for depression among African American women. A lack of adequate health care can significantly contribute to low rates of treatment among African-Americans, particularly African-American women. More than 20 percent of Black Americans are uninsured compared to fewer than 12 percent of Whites, according to the Department of Health Human Services. You can’t pray the pain away! What do you think of the mental health findings?

James Foley Execution Details Emerge: ISIS Demanded $132 Million Ransom

American journalist James Foley was executed by the Islamic militant group known as ISIS earlier this week. The Sunni extremists videotaped Foley’s grisly murder and claimed that his beheading was a protest against US foreign policies. James Foley Executed By Islamic Militants It now seems, however, that Foley’s capture and killing were part of a desperate extortion plot. ISIS reportedly demanded that the US pay a $132 million ransom for Foley’s safe return. The American government refused to pay the ransom, but reportedly – under direct orders from the President Obama – US Marines embarked on an unsuccessful rescue mission to try and save Foley and other captives; “The U.S. government had what we believed was sufficient intelligence, and when the opportunity presented itself, the president authorized the Department of Defense to move aggressively to recover our citizens,” said White House counterterrorism advisor Lisa Monaco. “Unfortunately, that mission was ultimately not successful because the hostages were not present.” The rescue mission reportedly resulted in a firefight that killed several ISIS operatives, but no Americans. Other new details of Foley’s execution include the fact that the executioner in his video is a British extremist nicknamed “John” by hostages, due to his resemblance to Beatles singer John Lennon. Obama has come under fire from conservatives for continuing his vacation in Martha’s Vineyard in the days following the murder.
