The United States Army Tortures Animals

I know this is a year old but I just had to post it on here because of how awful it is. “Charles J. Rosciam is a retired captain with the Navy Medical Services Corps – a combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He and 16 other retired armed forces medical personnel are attempting to convince the Department of Defense (DOD) to stop torturing and killing animals as part of its trauma training program. Each year, in the name of national security and good medicine, 8500 animals get stabbed, shot, burned and amputated. Over in the chemical casualty program, vervet monkeys get tormented with drugs whose effects have long since been banned on the field of battle. animal-testingCaptain Rosciam and his colleagues would like to see all that come to an end. In June, the group joined with the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) to brief both the House and Senate on the issue. The DOD’s own animal regulations require that non-animal substitutes be used whenever possible. And, according to PCRM, every one of the military’s medical uses of animals could be replaced with equivalent or superior non-animal methods. Those methods range from human-patient simulators to rotations through civilian trauma centers. Here’s a little bit of irony: Amidst all the controversy and perseveration over detainee torture and whether such grotesqueries are legal and/or acceptable given the heinous crimes the prisoners are alleged to have committed, no one has stopped to consider why it is okay to do all that and worse to beings whose innocence is beyond dispute. Of course, in the larger scheme, innocence or guilt is irrelevant; Torture is wrong no matter to whom it happens. And that’s precisely the point here. When our former president said the United States does not torture, he lied. When our current president says it, he‘d like it to be true. Let’s hope he hears and heeds Captain Rosciam. You go, sir. Fight on.” added by: Chod77

Leaked ObamaCare Docs Ignore Costs of the Law’s Mandates in ‘De-Grandfathering’ Estimates

On Friday, Investors Business Daily (IBD) reported on leaked government documents identifying what employer-provided health plans can and cannot do if they wish to retain their “grandfathered” status under the statist health care legislation commonly known as ObamaCare that became law on March 23. One of the items in the government document ( 83-page PDF ) is the following table, which estimates the percentages of large and small employers who will choose to “relinquish” (i.e., give up) their grandfathered status: In ironic timing, Walecia Konrad at the New York Times, in a personal finance column that appeared in the paper’s Saturday print edition and which was probably written shortly before IBD’s report, inadvertently revealed that ObamaCare itself may be a reason why employer “relinquishments” over the next three years come in well above the mid-range estimates in the table: As in years past, employers are also grappling with how to offset rising health care costs. Recent years have brought an average cost increase of about 9 percent, said Tracy Watts, a partner at Mercer Health and Benefits. In most cases, companies have been able to absorb about 6 percentage points of those cost increases a year, passing the rest onto employees. This year Ms. Watts estimates that changes made in response to the health law will add an extra 2 to 3 percent in cost increases , pressuring employers to engage in even more cost-sharing with employees — whether through higher premiums, co-payments or other out-of-pocket costs. (Senior vice president at Fidelity Consulting Services Pearce) Weaver also reports increased interest by employers in high-deductible insurance plans. “They’ve been effective in managing costs,” he said. The estimates tabulated above are based on a review of employer plan design changes made from 2008 to 2009. The government did not attempt to look at what might have happened if “an extra 2 to 3 percent” in ObamaCare-driven costs had been piled into the mix. Facing a higher mandated cost structure even beyond increases in the cost of health care services, many employers will find themselves unable to redesign their plans within ObamaCare’s tight grandfathering constraints while remaining competitive (or possibly viable), and will choose to relinquish, i.e., “de-grandfather.” The government’s document says that a de-grandfathered employer has two choices: “Significantly change the terms of the plan or coverage and comply with Affordable Care Act provisions from which grandfathered health plans are excepted; or in the case of a plan sponsor, cease to offer any plan.” To “comply with Affordable Care Act provisions,” an employer would have to offer a plan with ObamaCare’s specified minimum coverage levels, which are far higher and far more expensive than typical private plans, or, conceivably, offer coverage that is even better. Left unstated by the government is the fact that employers above a certain very small workforce threshold who “cease to offer any plan” must pay a payroll-based penalty for not doing so. Unless I’m missing something, the government’s grandfathering regs as drafted also close off the “high-deductible plan” option Konrad cited above. That’s because, as IBD reported, an employer plan will be de-grandfathered if: “It eliminates benefits related to diagnosis or treatment of a particular condition.” “It increases the percentage of a cost-sharing requirement (such as co-insurance) above its level as of March 23, 2010.” “It increases the fixed amount of cost-sharing such as deductibles or out-of-pocket limits by a total percentage measured from March 23, 2010, that is more than the sum of medical inflation plus 15 percentage points.” “It increases co-payments from March 23, 2010, by an amount that is the greater of: medical inflation plus 15 percentage points or medical inflation plus $5.” “The employer’s share of the premium decreases more than 5 percentage points below what the share was on March 23, 2010.” Beyond that, the ObamaCare-driven “extra 2 to three percent” to which the Times’s Konrad refers above may be low. One mandate alone may (I would say probably will) cause costs to increase by about that amount. This was explained in a May 25 item found at the Society for Human Resources Management (bold is mine): The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released estimates in May 2010 of the costs and benefits of the requirement to cover adult children up to age 26, as part of a regulation directing employers and insurers on how to carry it out. The new benefit is estimated by HHS to cost $3,380 for each dependent, raising premiums by 0.7 percent in 2011 for employer plans, according to the department’s mid-range estimate. Some 1.2 million young adults are expected to sign up, more than half of whom would have been uninsured. … there are concerns about the impact of adverse selection with this population. That is, prior to 2014 when all Americans must secure health care coverage, healthy young adults may chose to forgo coverage through their parent’s plan, while the estimated one in six young adults with chronic health issues would be the most likely to accept coverage under their parent’s plan. This self-selection for coverage by the least healthy could result in higher coverage costs than the estimates presented above. … Bruce Davis, health and group benefits national practice leader at HR consultancy Findley Davies … said as of May 2010 his firm is forecasting an additional cost increase of 2 to 2.5 percent to account for the unknown cost of adding adult children, and an overall health care cost trend increase of around 11 percent for 2011. Exit questions: What in this so-called “Affordable Health Care Act” is really “affordable”? Who else (if anyone) in the establishment press will meaningfully address how obviously and utterly untrue the president’s core promise to employees (“If you like your coverage, you can keep it?) has become less than 90 days since ObamaCare passed? After Two Years with Obama, Linda Douglass Returns to News Media

Completing a full spin through the revolving door, Linda Douglass, a long-time CBS and ABC correspondent before jumping aboard the Obama campaign in 2008 – followed by HHS and White House positions promoting ObamaCare — has re-joined The Atlantic as a Vice President who “will concentrate on company strategy and communications,” the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz reported online Thursday morning . Before joining the Obama campaign as senior strategist and senior campaign spokesperson on the road, Douglass toiled for National Journal , part of Atlantic Media which also owns The Hotline . Her first stint in the new administration was as Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services, followed by Communications Director for the White House’s Health Reform Office, a slot she left in April. Atlantic Chairman David Bradley recognizes the conflict between her political agenda and being a journalist, but he told Kurtz “she’s too big an editorial talent for us to keep her out of the editorial product.” From Kurtz’s June 10 post: While her political tenure “troubles me not at all” for the corporate part of the job, Bradley says, he sees a “blinking red light” when she gets involved with the journalistic side, especially as it involves the president or health care. But, adds Bradley, “she’s too big an editorial talent for us to keep her out of the editorial product.” Douglass, who left the ABC News Washington bureau in 2006 after spending much of the 1990s with CBS News, will advance the opinions of, amongst others, Andrew Sullivan, author of The Atlantic’s “ The Daily Dish ” blog. On last Friday’s Real time with Bill Maher, Sullivan applauded author Joe McGinniss for renting the house next to Sarah Palin’s, proclaiming he’s just trying “to find out who this farce and phony actually is.” > From April: “ Her ObamaCare Mission Achieved, ABC/CBS Veteran Linda Douglass Departs White House .” > My complete list of Obama-news media revolvers , updated just a few days ago, which now stands at 15.

Bizarre Bird Smuggling Case Lands Two Men in Jail

Photo: AP / Department of Justice Last April, airport authorities became suspicious of a traveler arriving to LAX from Vietnam after noticing bird droppings on his socks and feathers peeking from the cuffs of his pants. A closer inspection of the man, Sony Dong, revealed fourteen Asian songbirds strapped to the his legs, valued at around $1000 each on the black market. Over fifty more birds were found when Dong’s residence was searched, and police would later arrest the smuggling operation’s ringleader. But after pleading guilty in court, the two men have been sentenced to jail for their role in the

President Obama Delivers Commencement Speech At Kalamazoo Central High School

‘Be a part of something bigger than yourself,’ he urged the Michigan students, who won Get Schooled’s Race to the Top contest. By James Montgomery President Barack Obama speaks at Kalamazoo Central High School on Monday Photo: Whitehouse.gov In early March, students at Kalamazoo Central High School submitted a video to Get Schooled’s Race to the Top competition, a nationwide search to find the school most dedicated to making — as Get Schooled put it — “great strides on personal responsibility, academic excellence and college readiness.” More than 1,000 high schools across the country entered; Kalamazoo Central won. On Monday (June 7), the school finally received its prize: President Barack Obama showed up to deliver the commencement address for the class of 2010. And it was worth the wait. Delivering his first-ever high school graduation speech, President Obama lauded Kalamazoo Central’s students for their hard work, dedication and ingenuity and called the school a model for success in the 21st century. “It gives me great confidence to know that we’ve got such incredible young leaders that are going to be remaking the world in so many ways,” Obama said. “I’m here tonight because I think America has a lot to learn from Kalamazoo Central about what makes a successful school in this new century.” Obama earned cheers for those remarks and for another passage early in his commencement speech. He mentioned an article in the local newspaper that quoted a Central student named Kelsey Wilson saying that her school “never gets credit for what we do.” “Well, Kelsey, I’m here tonight because … I know, and America knows what you’ve got at Kalamazoo Central,” Obama said, singling Wilson out from the audience. “You are amazing. We know!” Obama got more than a few laughs and whoops when he admitted that, in his younger days, he “sometimes … partied too much” (“This is a cautionary tale; don’t be cheering when I say that,” he chuckled) but that he quickly learned that the only way to achieve lasting success in this world was through tireless dedication and hard work. And to that end, he also used the speech as an opportunity to give the class of 2010 some post-grad pointers (“Right now, you’re getting plenty of advice from everybody. Some of it’s helpful,” he joked. “And so I hate to pile on, but while I’m here, what the heck?”), urging them to never settle for instant gratification, take responsibility for their successes and failures, and to strive to expand their horizons — not just in the field of education, but in life as well. “Don’t just hang out with people who look like you or go to the same church as you or share the same political views. Broaden your experiences, because that’s how you’ll learn what it’s like to walk in somebody else’s shoes,” Obama said. “Be a part of something bigger than yourself … because there is work to be done, and your country needs you. We’ve got an economy to rebuild … we’ve got an oil spill to clean up, we’ve got clean energy to discover. … It’s going to be up to you. Pursue excellence in everything you do. After all, you are the Giants, and with the education you got here, there’s nothing you can’t do.” Before delivering the commencement address — which was held at nearby Western Michigan University, due to the large crowds — Obama met with Kalamazoo Central’s graduating class in a special ceremony. The school’s winning video (called “We Are the Giants” ) was selected as the winning entry by Obama and the Department of Education. Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Puerto Rican Man Almost Deported To Mexico:

This is why Arizona SB 1070 will backfire: Immigration authorities in Berwyn, Illinois arrested Puerto Rican Eduardo Caraballo in a stolen car case, but when his mother posted his bail, he was detained because authorities didn’t believe he was a legal citizen. His mother brought his birth certificate, but Eduardo was unable to answer some questions about the island because he’s lived all his life on the mainland. Eduardo was detained for more three days and threatened with deportation–to Mexico. I don't have any sympathy for car thieves if the man is guilty of what officials are potentially charging him of, but I don't want to see anyone who is a legal citizen deported to a country they were never a citizen of either. Three days to figure out this man was a United States citizen and that he should be tried in a U.S. criminal court if charges are pressed and not deported even after they got his birth certificate? As Laffy said, “From the Department of Bound to Happen”. I guess even if you show your papers that isn't good enough in some parts of Illinois now. Thanks Arizona. Looks like your xenophobia is spreading. added by: Stoneyroad
