Computer simulations show oil reaching up the Atlantic coastline and toward Europe

“The possible spread of the oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon rig over the course of one year was studied in a series of computer simulations by a team of researchers from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The simulations suggest that the coastlines near the Carolinas, Georgia, and Northern Florida could see the effects of the oil spill as early as October 2010, while the main branch of the subtropical gyre is likely to transport the oil film towards Europe, although strongly diluted. Eight million buoyant particles were released continuously from April 20 to September 17, 2010, at the location of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The release occurred in ocean flow data from simulations conducted with the high-resolution Ocean General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator (OFES). “The paths of the particles were calculated in 8 typical OFES years over 360 days from the beginning of the spill,” says Fabian Schloesser, a PhD student from the Department of Oceanography in SOEST, who worked on these simulations with Axel Timmermann and Oliver Elison Timm from the International Pacific Research Center, also in SOEST. “From these 8 typical years, 5 were selected to create an animation for which the calculated extent of the spill best matches current observational estimates.” http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/07/100706103408.htm added by: DeliaTheArtist

Feds suing to stop Ariz. immigrant law

The U.S. Justice Department is filing a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Arizona's tough new law targeting illegal immigrants. The planned lawsuit was confirmed to The Associated Press by a Justice Department official with knowledge of the plans. The official didn't want to be identified before a public announcement planned for later Tuesday. The lawsuit will argue that Arizona's new measure requiring state and local police to question and possibly arrest illegal immigrants during the enforcement of other laws, like traffic stops, usurps federal authority. Tuesday's action has been expected for weeks. President Barack Obama has called the state law misguided. Supporters say it is a reasonable reaction to federal inaction on immigration. added by: Stoneyroad

Open Thread: DOJ Attacks Former Employee Over New Black Panthers

The Eric Holder-led Department of Justice is now resorting to attacks against its former employee Christian Adams after he’s come out publicly criticizing its decision to refuse to prosecute the New Black Panther Party under voter intimidation laws. Adams is fighting back , however: I was appalled and disappointed by the DOJ yesterday. They included a blatant lie in their response to my interview.  They told Fox News I had been “unhappy with my position.” Not only would this be a personnel matter they aren’t supposed to discuss, it’s a fairy tale. In fact on April 28 I got a promotion, so maybe they can let me know what position I was unhappy with. The problem with smearing me is that there are many others who know the truth inside the Department. Documents which they refuse to turn over pursuant to subpoenas from the Civil Rights Commission prove it. Testimony from other DOJ employees, which they refuse to allow, would also prove it. Will he get the support he needs from his former colleagues or will the issue get ignored and swept under the rug?

Britney Spears Accused of Child Abuse

Britney Spears is the subject of a new investigation following a former bodyguard’s alleging that she abused her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. However, inside sources say that the troubled pop star and her management are not concerned over the claims made by Fernando Flores in the UK’s Sun . Flores says he told investigators that Spears beat one of her sons with a belt and fed them food they were allergic to which in turn made them violently ill. He also claimed he had no choice but to resign from the job as a result of her “erratic” behavior (he said he was subject to Britney Spears nude come-ons). Team BS says the child abuse allegations are … well, BS. “(Flores’ claims) are simply not true,” says a Spears source. “There are always people around Britney, nannies and such. She is never alone with the boys .” “She would never have the opportunity to do something like that. She’s very loving of the kids. Neither she nor [manager] Larry Rudolph, are worried.” Another source, who previously worked with the starlet, agreed that Britney Spears is the target of a bitter former employee upset by the loss of his job. “Britney may have been a little out of control sometimes but never would harm her babies, never in a million years would she hurt them,” said the insider. Although the Department of Children and Family Services were regulars at Britney’s home years ago, she is now “totally clean” with the department. Also, as of Wednesday, they were unaware of Flores’ request for investigation into the matter, despite the former bodyguard’s claim that he told them. Suspect as Britney Spears’ parenting skills are, it’s hard to give this credibility. Instead, let’s focus on happier topics, like her new Candie’s clothing line !

Lib Talker Malloy Happy Cheney’s In Hospital, Hopes ‘Miserable Bastard’ Dies

Is there any limit to the hatred liberal talk radio host Mike Malloy is willing to express on the air about conservatives? Have we as a nation really degraded to a point that it’s acceptable to verbalize over the airwaves one’s hope that a fellow American dies? Such questions naturally arise when one hears the kind of unhinged invective that came out of Malloy’s mouth on Friday after it was announced that former Vice President Dick Cheney was back in the hospital with heart troubles. As a courtesy to our readers, the audio and partial transcript of this abomination have been intentionally placed after the break due to the despicable nature of their content (h/t Radio Equalizer ): MIKE MALLOY: Cheney has had five heart attacks, and history of heart trouble. Well, I guess they’re one and the same. The cause of his latest health problem is not clear. I think I know, but (long pause) he’s done too much cannibalism, drunk too many cups of blood! Cheney’s in the hospital. Ah, the first good news all day. Malloy then read an e-mail from a caller asking, “What will it make him to lie still and actually die? He has more lives than a cat. I’m beginning to believe he really does need a stake through the heart.” After finishing this disgusting letter and laughing, Malloy continued: MALLOY: No, I’m not going to feel anything but intense gratitude that this miserable bastard has stepped off this earthly coil! Really! And I’m sure on a much lesser scale when I die, there will probably be some of you right-wing flip tops who will feel the same way – I frankly don’t give a damn! But no – Cheney is responsible. Cheney is a murderer. He’s a killer. He’s a torturer. He is evil personified! He is a walking mass of horror and when he’s gone, this planet will be cleaner! Honestly, what causes all this hatred from folks on the left? Conservative talkers might dislike President Obama and Vice President Biden, but they don’t go on the air hoping our political leaders die. Makes you wonder when the Department of Homeland Security is going to issue a warning about all this hate-speech on the left inciting acts of violence from domestic terrorists, although I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that report.  Now please excuse me – I have to wash my hands and keyboard of this detritus.

California Welfare Debit Cards Being Used At Casinos, Media Mostly Mum

The Los Angeles Times on Thursday published a blockbuster report concerning California welfare recipients using state-issued debit cards at casino ATMs to be able to instantly gamble with taxpayer dollars. “The cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms, the review found.” Despite this shocking revelation, America’s media largely ignored the findings. But before we get there, KTLA-TV logged a fabulous report on this subject Thursday evening (video follows with more highlights from the Times piece and commentary): “In a time when we have a $19-billion deficit, and we’re taking a serious look at the future of many safety-net programs, it’s appalling to think that welfare beneficiaries can use their cards in a casino,” said Seth Unger, spokesman for the Assembly Republican Caucus. Democratic leaders, who have vowed to protect the state’s fraying social safety net, also began calling for reform Wednesday. “In these tough times, when so many children and vulnerable families depend on the safety net, we have to make sure food stamps and other services are being used the way the people of California intended them to be,” said Shannon Murphy, spokeswoman for Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D- Los Angeles). “Other states have closed this loophole, and the Assembly will work with the Schwarzenegger administration to make that happen.” The casinos are listed on a Department of Social Services website that allows welfare recipients to search for addresses of ATMs where they can withdraw cash provided under the Temporary Aid for Needy Families program. The monthly grant ranges up to $694; most of the ATMs impose a withdrawal limit of about $300 per day. To be sure, there IS a national interest here: The cash portion of California’s welfare benefits comes from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Each year, California gets $3.7 billion from the federal government for the program, while state and local governments kick in an additional $2.9 billion. Furthermore, as many states also issue these cards for their welfare recipients, who knows how many Americans are gambling with taxpayer dollars across the fruited plain? Yet outside of California, the media weren’t very interested in this story. According to LexisNexis, no newspapers outside of the Golden State reported the Times’ findings. Neither did ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, or NBC. This boycott seems especially odd as the Associated Press and UPI covered this matter over their respective wires with the former logging reports on Thursday AND Friday. Also bucking the trend were Fox News’s Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren who both discussed this on Thursday as did NPR. The well-read Drudge Report featured this as a “developing” story at 6:47 PM Thursday.  With this in mind, why did the rest of our national media completely ignore it?  Those interested can read more about California’s Electronic Benefit Transfer program here .

Illegal Alien Incarceration Bad for States’ Budgets

By Jim Kouri Tuesday, June 15, 2010 President Barack Obama says he wants lawmakers in both houses of Congress to make progress this year on reforming the immigration system. However, he’s not talking about how his administration is failing to protect citizens from criminal aliens. When the United States incarcerates criminal aliens — non-citizens convicted of crimes while in this country legally or illegally — in federal and state prisons and local jails, the federal government bears only a small part of the costs. While the federal government pays to incarcerate criminal aliens in federal prisons, it reimburses state and local governments such as Arizona for a mere portion of their costs of incarcerating some, but not all, criminal aliens illegally in the country through the Department of Justice’s State Criminal Alien Assistance Program managed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Some state and local governments have expressed concerns about the impact that criminal aliens have on already overcrowded prisons and jails and that the federal government reimburses them for only a portion of their costs of incarcerating criminal aliens. Congress requested that the General Accounting Office provide information concerning criminal aliens incarcerated at the federal, state, and local level. For the criminal aliens incarcerated, the state and local governments that received reimbursement through SCAAP, only received about 25 percent of the costs . At the federal level, the number of criminal aliens incarcerated increased from about 42,000 at the end of calendar year 2001 to about 49,000 at the end of calendar year 2004 — a 15 percent increase. The percentage of all federal prisoners who are criminal aliens has remained the same over the last 3 years — about 27 percent. The majority of criminal aliens incarcerated at the end of calendar year 2004 were identified as citizens of Mexico. It is estimated the federal cost of incarcerating criminal aliens — Bureau of Prison’s cost to incarcerate criminals and reimbursements to state and local governments under SCAAP — totaled approximately $5.8 billion for calendar years 2001 through 2004. BOP’s cost to incarcerate criminal aliens rose from about $950 million in 2001 to about $1.2 billion in 2004 — a 14 percent increase. Federal reimbursements for incarcerating criminal aliens in state prisons and local jails declined from $550 million in 2001 to $280 million in 2004, in a large part due to a reduction in congressional appropriations. At the state level, the 50 states received reimbursement for incarcerating about 77,000 criminal aliens in fiscal year 2002 and 47 states received reimbursement for incarcerating about 74,000 in fiscal year 2003. For the 5 states incarcerating about 80 percent of these criminal aliens in fiscal year 2003, about 68 percent incarcerated in mid-year 2004 reported that the country of citizenship or country of birth as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, or Cuba. Four of these 5 states spent about $1.6 billion to incarcerate criminal aliens reimbursed through SCAAP during fiscal years 2002 and 2003. Estimates are that the federal government reimbursed these four states about 25 percent or less of the estimated cost to incarcerate these criminal aliens in fiscal years 2002 and 2003. At the local level, in fiscal year 2002, SCAAP reimbursed about 750 local governments for incarcerating about 138,000 criminal aliens. In fiscal year 2003, SCAAP reimbursed about 700 local governments for about 147,000 criminal aliens, with 5 local jail systems accounting for about 30 percent of these criminal aliens. The 147,000 criminal aliens incarcerated during fiscal year 2003 spent a total of about 8.5 million days in jail. Mexico leads as the country of birth for foreign-born arrestees at these 5 local jails in fiscal year 2003. It’s estimated that 4 of these 5 local jails spent $390 million in fiscal years 2002 and 2003 to incarcerate criminal aliens and were reimbursed about $73 million through SCAAP. It’s believed that the federal government reimbursed these localities about 25 percent or less of the criminal alien incarceration cost in fiscal years 2002 and 2003.
