SMH: Shady Doctor’s Lawyers Say Michael Jackson “Killed Himself” With Propofol

They just need to let poor MJ rest in peace: Michael Jackson killed himself with a lethal dose of the hospital anaesthesia Propofol, it has been claimed. Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren claimed lawyers for Dr Conrad Murray, who is accused of involuntary manslaughter in relation to Jackson’s death, plan to use the theory as the main part of his defense. Walgren’s statement came at a hearing yesterday where a lawyer for Dr Murray clashed with the prosecutor over who should test residue from two syringes found in Jackson’s bedroom. He said: ‘I do think it’s clear the defense is operating under the theory that the victim, Michael Jackson, killed himself. ‘They don’t want to say it but that’s the direction in which they are going.’ Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan said a huge amount of the anaesthetic Propofol was found in Jackson’s body, but his client has said he gave him only 25 milligrams of the drug. Mr. Walgren suggested the defense will claim Jackson killed himself by injecting more of the drug into himself. It is understood that Dr Murray’s lawyers will claim that the star woke up while his physician was out of the room for two minutes in the toilet and administered a lethal dose of the drug himself. A preliminary hearing in the case begins next Tuesday when Judge Michael Pastor will decide whether the prosecution has a strong enough case to support the unusual charge that Dr Murray was criminally responsible for the king of pop’s death in June 2009. As many as 30 witnesses are expected to be called during the two week hearing. Although the defense won’t be putting its case, it is thought highly likely that the judge will find that the American cardiologist will have to go to trial. Dr. Murray, 52, faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted. Reports in the US have suggested that the doctor’s lawyers will argue that the singer injected Propofol himself using an intravenous drip, causing a massive heart attack. He then supposedly dropped the bottle on the floor. When the doctor came back into the room he tried CPR in a desperate attempt to revive Jackson. An autopsy later showed the heart attack was caused by a fatal dose of Propofol, a drug Jackson used to help with his chronic insomnia. Mr Flanagan said a broken syringe was found on the bedroom floor in addition to a syringe in an intravenous medication bag. He also revealed that a fingerprint found on the broken syringe hasn’t been identified. Source

US Government Claims Right to Kill Americans Anytime and Anywhere

(The+Media+Freedom+Foundation)&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher The Obama Administration currently asserts it has the right to kill any American they deem a threat or terrorist without judicial review. The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the ALCU currently are challenging this notion in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. This lawsuit stems from the killing of Nasser Al-Aulaqi’s son (who was an U.S. citizen) who was targeted and killed by the United States Government. It is interesting to note that according to CCR Staff Attorney Pardiss Kabriaei “The Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected the government’s claim to an unchecked system of global detention, and the district court should similarly reject the administration’s claim here to an unchecked system of global targeted killing”. The ACLU and CCR hopes the will court rule the U.S. Government can only kill a U.S. citizen if there is a proof of an imminent threat to life. “If the Constitution means anything, it surely means that the president does not have unreviewable authority to summarily execute any American whom he concludes is an enemy of the state,” said Jameel Jaffer, Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU, who presented arguments in the case. “It’s the government’s responsibility to protect the nation from terrorist attacks, but the courts have a crucial role to play in ensuring that counterterrorism policies are consistent with the Constitution.” Title: Obama Administration Claims Unchecked Authority to Kill Americans Outside Combat Zones Publication: CommonDreams.org, November 8th, 2010 Author: ACLU and Center for Constitutional Rights URL: http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/11/08-4 Faculty Evaluator: Cynthia Boaz, Sonoma State University Student Researcher: Jason Corbett, Sonoma State University For more information on the case, including fact sheets and legal papers, visit: www.aclu.org/targetedkillings and www.ccrjustice.org/targetedkillings added by: treewolf39

Dean Speaks Out Against Obama

This should make any Democrat very nervous. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/tax-cut-deal-lament_n_793105.html WASHINGTON — Obama's decision to craft a deal with Republicans on the Bush tax cuts may have been, as administration officials insist, the product of economic and political necessities. But it has created deep reservoirs of distrust with the president's ability to handle high-stakes negotiations and has compelled even former staffers to level blunt criticisms about the White House's politics. “I think the president made a huge mistake in supporting any extension of tax cuts,” said Steve Hildebrand, the deputy national director of Obama's presidential campaign and a strategist who has long grown sour on Washington. “We can't afford it as a country, and we should recognize that. We need his leadership and bipartisan congressional leadership on it. And the whole idea of negotiating with Republicans who won't negotiate in good faith, it is not the direction the president should be taking.” added by: tverdell

Cable Reveals US Behind Airstrike That Killed 21 Children In Yemen

A diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks shows that the US military covered up the killing of dozens of civilians during a cruise missile strike in south Yemen in December 2009. The secret cable from January 2010( http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/cable/2010/01/10SANAA4.html ) corroborated images( http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/yemen-images-missile-and-cluster-muni… ) released earlier this year by Amnesty International, implicating the US in the use of cluster bombs. The cable was sent by Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh to US General David Petraeus, saying his government would “continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours.” According to the cable, this prompted Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister Rashad al-Alimi “to joke that he had just 'lied' by telling Parliament that the bombs in Arhab, Abyan, and Shebwa were American-made but deployed by the ROYG [Republic of Yemen Government].” “The cable appears to confirm Amnesty International's finding that the Abyan strike was carried out by the US military, not Yemeni government forces,” Philip Luther, a Deputy Director for Amnesty International, said. On December 17, 2009, an alleged al-Qaeda training camp in Abyan was hit by a cruise missile, killing 41 local residents, including 14 women, 21 children, and 14 alleged al-Qaeda members. According to the leaked cable, President Saleh praised the strikes, “but said that 'mistakes were made' in the killing of civilians in Abyan.” Gen. Petraeus responded that only three civilians, the wife and two children of an al-Qaeda member, were killed. After the attack, Amnesty International requested information from the Pentagon about US involvement in the missile attack, but received no response. The Pentagon later released a statement saying that questions on operations against al-Qaeda should be posed to the Yemeni government. The leaked cable revealed that Gen. Petraeus proposed abandoning the use of cruise missiles and instead using fixed-wing bombers circling outside of Yemeni territory to strike at targets using precision-guided bombs “when actionable intelligence became available.” The proposal was welcomed by President Saleh. Security assistance to Yemen may substantially increase, if Gen. Petraeus has his way. “The General told Saleh that he had requested USD 150 million in security assistance for 2010, a substantial increase over the 2009 amount of USD 67 million,” the cable states. Amnesty International is calling on the US to investigate the use of drones by US forces for targeted killings of individuals in Yemen. “There must be an immediate investigation into the dozens of deaths of local residents in the Abyan air strike, including into the extent of US involvement,” Luther said. “Those responsible for unlawful killings must be brought to justice.” US Attorney General Eric Holder said WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is currently under investigation and would be pursued if he were found to have broken the law. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/11/wikileaks-chief/ Republican Congressman Peter King( http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/11/gop-rep-wikileaks-deemed-foreign-terrorist-or… ), the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, went so far as to say that the website should be deemed a “foreign terrorist organization.” Rep. King's call for prosecution was echoed( http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/11/graham-cheney-wikileaks-prosecuted/ ) by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Clair McCaskill (D-MO) and former State Department official Liz Cheney. “We're deeply skeptical that prosecuting WikiLeaks would be constitutional, or a good idea,” Hina Shamsi, Director of the ACLU National Security Project, said. “The courts have made clear that the First Amendment protects independent third parties who publish classified information. Prosecuting WikiLeaks would be no different from prosecuting the media outlets that also published classified documents.” “Prosecuting publishers of classified information threatens investigative journalism that is necessary to an informed public debate about government conduct, and that is an unthinkable outcome.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Survey Shows Arabs More Opposed to GZ Mosque Than American Media

Here’s a fact you’re not likely to see on tonight’s evening news broadcasts: According to a recent poll, Arabs living abroad are more likely to be opposed to the “Ground Zero Mosque” than the American media are. According to a recent survey by the Arabic online news service Elaph (Arabic version here ), 58 percent of Arabs think the construction should be moved elsewhere. And according to a Media Research Center study released last week, 55 percent of network news coverage of the debate has come down on the pro-Mosque side. The MRC study also found that on the question of whether opposition to the mosque demonstrated a widely held “Islamophobia” among Americans, 93 percent of network news soundbites answered ion the affirmative. In contrast, when asked whether the United States is a “tolerant” or “bigoted” society, 63 percent of Elaph respondents chose the former. So the Arab world has a more favorable view of Americans than our own media elite, and sides with the American people over the network news broadcasters on the hot-button issue of the day. Faoud Ajami highlighted the Elaph poll in his Wall Street Journal column on Monday: From his recent travels to the Persian Gulf-sponsored and paid for by the State Department-Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf returned with a none-too-subtle threat. His project, the Ground Zero Mosque, would have to go on. Its cancellation would risk putting “our soldiers, our troops, our embassies and citizens under attack in the Muslim world.” Leave aside the attempt to make this project a matter of national security. The self-appointed bridge between America and the Arab-Islamic world is a false witness to the sentiments in Islamic lands. Deputy Editorial Page Editor Bret Stephens and Editorial Board member Matthew Kaminski on the plan for a ‘Mosque at Ground Zero,’ and Senior Editorial Writer Joseph Rago reports on the Missouri results. The truth is that the trajectory of Islam in America (and Europe for that matter) is at variance with the play of things in Islam’s main habitat. A survey by Elaph, the most respected electronic daily in the Arab world, gave a decided edge to those who objected to the building of this mosque-58% saw it as a project of folly. Elaph was at it again in the aftermath of Pastor Terry Jones’s threat to burn copies of the Quran: It queried its readers as to whether America was a “tolerant” or a “bigoted” society. The split was 63% to 37% in favor of those who accepted the good faith and pluralism of this country. So a larger proportion of Arabs believe in that notion than American journalists. That is a sad indictment of the press in this country.

Meredith Vieira to GOP Young Guns: What’s So Good About Tax Cuts?

NBC’s Meredith Vieira, on Tuesday’s Today show, demonstrated just how out of touch she is on the Tea Party and the economy as she questioned GOP House members, “Are you worried about the influence of the Tea Party?” and even doubted the positive effect tax cuts can have on creating jobs as she questioned: “What’s so good about them?” [ audio available here ] On to promote their new book Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders, Republican Congressmen Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy were on hand to school the Today anchor, with Cantor having to explain to Vieira that “the last thing you want to do in an economy like this with 9.6 percent unemployment is have a big tax increase on small businesses,” as seen in the following exchange: VIEIRA: One of the key issues also heading into the midterm elections, is this expiration of the tax cuts, Bush’s tax cuts. Over the weekend, your leader I guess, your boss, Minority Leader John Boehner said that he would support tax cuts for just middle income earners, if that was his only option. Yesterday he took that back, he did an about-face. Why? CANTOR: I think sort of fundamental to everyone right now watching this show, whether it’s a working mom, a small business owner, or an investor, I think none of, none of those type of people, no American really thinks that raising taxes is a good idea, especially in a recession. And I think that’s what John Boehner was trying to say. And the Republican position has always been and will be – we don’t believe there ought to be tax hikes. And so I do think, Meredith, you’re right. That’s going to be a critical issue over the next several weeks, as we go back to Washington today. VIEIRA: And yet these tax cuts have been in existence for quite a while, these Bush tax cuts. If they were designed to stimulate the economy and to create jobs, they didn’t succeed. So what’s so good about them? The following is the full interview as it was aired on the September 14 Today show: MEREDITH VIEIRA: Speaking of the House, Republican Congressman Eric Cantor of Virginia is the House Minority Whip, Kevin McCarthy of California is Deputy Whip and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is the ranking member on the House Budget committee. And together, they have written a new book, Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders. Gentlemen, good morning to all of you.  [On screen headline: “‘Young Guns’ New Generation Of Conservative Leaders”] REP. PAUL RYAN: Good morning. REP. ERIC CANTOR: Good morning. VIEIRA: Before I get to the book, I want to talk about the Delaware primary. You have Mike Castle, the moderate versus Christine O’Donnell, the Tea Party candidate whose views, as Kelly just pointed out, on social issues may not sit well with swing voters. Castle has said if O’Donnell wins today, this primary, then the Republicans will lose the seat in November. Eric, do you agree with that? CANTOR: Meredith, what’s going on now across the country is obviously people are very upset with Washington. They’re tired of politicians who made promises that they just can’t keep. And so we’re, we’re seeing across the country some very active primaries. And, you know, what we have done here is we’ve gotten together a couple of years ago and we put together an effort in search of candidates who could actually respond to that very issue. VIEIRA: But do you agree with Castle? That if O’Donnell wins and, I’ll ask you this, well, that, that in fact, the Republicans will lose the seat? RYAN: No, not necessarily so. I think things are shifting in politics these days. The, the conventional wisdom in politics is not going to be what’s going to happen in 2010. So I would not necessarily say that, that the seat is gone. It’s probably going to be more challenging, more competitive. But Delaware voters, voters all over America are really upset with the fiscal direction of this c ountry. VIEIRA : Are, are you as, who are not members of the Tea Party, worried about the influence of the Tea Party? REP. KEVIN MCCARTHY: No. You look what’s happening here is, the Tea Party is organically grown. It’s individuals getting out, frustrated with where this country is going, not seeing solutions out of Washington. It’s a real challenge for anybody who’s an incumbent. So that’s a tough part for Republicans in a primary. Come November, it’s gonna be a very difficult part for the majority party, the Democrats. That’s why the House is even in play. It brings intensity for individuals to turn out. VIEIRA: And in this book you talk about the failings of the Republican Party- RYAN: That’s right. VIEIRA: -the reason why they lost control of the House. So is that part of the reason why you’re in the situation that you are right now? MCCARTHY: Yes. We were fired in 2006. And part of what this is about, Young Guns, is finding candidates that will run on ideas and actually solve problems using the conservative beliefs. And I think that’s a fundamental difference you’ll find in this election. VIEIRA: One of the key issues also heading into the midterm elections, is this expiration of the tax cuts, Bush’s tax cuts. CANTOR: Well Meredith, first of all, remember half of all small business income will have a huge tax increase in January, 70 percent of our jobs come from small businesses. So the last thing you want to do in an economy like this with 9.6 percent unemployment is have a big tax increase on small businesses which is the engine of job creation in America. That is not good policy. The problem with this January tax increase is it’s followed up by another tax increase in 2013. So we think the fiscal direction of this Congress, of this country is in the wrong way. That’s part of the reason we wrote this book, is to say look, when we were in the majority last time, we didn’t do things right. We need to own up for that. And we want to have a fiscally conservative majority, if we’re given the opportunity to lead, and that is the whole point. Raising taxes in this kind of economy is a bad idea. VIEIRA: Kevin, let me ask you, 49 way days away from the election, if you look at the polling, Republicans, a generic ballot against Democrats hold about seven-point advantage. And that’s without any grand plan like the Contract with America back in 1994. In fact, a lot of people see you, continue to see you as the party of no. So was it good enough, this time around, just to say no, we’re not Democrats. Is that good enough to win? MCCARTHY: No, it’s not. And we’ve had a lot of ideas out there. I mean we produced our own stimulus that focused on private sector jobs, where they went out and produced one on public, where it costs a trillion dollars with interest, Keynesian view. You ask the American public, more people today believe Elvis Presley is alive than the stimulus created jobs. But you’re gonna find, in less than two weeks, we will come out with a full new agenda that lays out things that we can do right now, to create jobs, cut the spending and reform the culture of Washington itself. VIEIRA: Well congratulations on the book, by the way, Young Guns. How old are you guys? (Laughter) CANTOR: Listen, we want, we want to take the opportunity to do the promotion here. Thank you, thank you for that. So- VIEIRA: Answer? Not answered. Congressman Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan. Thank you all.
