Blaming the victim of rape is wrong. Don’t do it. Make sure others don’t do it.

I wanted to post this because I saw a lot of rape apologists on a recent thread on here. Maybe this will raise some awareness. And it's written by a guy, so maybe other dudes will have an easier time grasping it. -AL http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/7/8/882464/-Blaming-the-victim-of-rape-is-wro… ___ I meant to write this diary a long time ago—in fact, I meant it as a followup diary to my On Rape and Men (Brace Yourself), which I still receive mail for (mostly positive). I have received a few stories that have prompted me to finally write a follow-up diary. So here it is. I will be addressing this issue largely as a women's issue—uh, because it is—but I will also cover male victims of rape because they are a feminist issue as well. To put the thesis of this diary simply, the victim of rape is never at fault. I. Why We Blame and Why It's Wrong Before we get into why it's wrong to blame the victim of rape, I think it's important to examine why many people feel inclined to blame the victim. Ellen Friedrichs shares a compelling theory: Another study done by researchers in Israel found that people blame rape victims in order to maintain a sense of control over their own lives. As they write, In general, the results show that subjects attribute blame to the rape victim. Attribution of blame helps to reinforce the casual observer’s belief that the world is a safe, protected place, and that occurrences such as rape can be controlled…Blame reflects the way in which people organize data regarding events and behaviors that have actual or potential adverse consequences. It is possible that, given the perception that women are vulnerable, exposed, and more aware of their vulnerability, they are expected to act with extra caution to avoid rape, and are therefore judged more harshly when actually victimized. These results can explain victim blaming more as a self-defense mechanism than a callous act of judgment or misogyny. When you believe that victims are to blame for their assaults, you can ensure you won't make the same mistakes. I understand the thought process here—we want to believe the bad things that happen to others are their fault because we want to believe we have a disproportionate level of control over what happens to our persons—but it's still wrong. The fact that women are regarded as more vulnerable and exposed should be a cause for us to blame the people who assert their power over them unjustly, NOT the women themselves. This debate is one that boils down to a debate of agency: how much control do men have over their own actions? As a male feminist, I believe that men have a good degree of control over their actions, especially when it comes to their decision to rape somebody or not. Blaming the victim of rape implicitly suggests that men are incapable of exerting control over this particular decision, which is ridiculous. Victim-blamers point to different things in order to justify their mentality and one of the most popular is “She was drunk. She shouldn't have been drinking in such a place. She knew what could have happened!” Here's one of the worst examples of victim-blaming I've seen, which to my chagrin was written by a female Princeton student: Did she have the right to accuse the boy of rape? Before you say yes, think about this for a minute: Should the fact that she willingly got herself into an advanced state of inebriation prevent her from complaining about anything that happened to her while she was in that state? She knew what would happen if she started drinking. We all know that the more people drink, the less likely they are to make wise decisions. It is common sense. Therefore, the girl willingly got herself into a state in which she could not act rationally. This, in my opinion, is equivalent to agreeing to anything that might happen to her while in this state. In the case of our girl, this happened to be sex with a stranger. Sorry, but if you agree with this reasoning, there's something really wrong with you: inebriation in an environment with men implies consent to anything? That's disgusting. This view is probably more common than I would like, though the reasoning for it is usually not explicitly stated like it is here. But when it comes to rape involving the woman consuming alcohol, you see a lot of people focus on that factor, even though it was the man who perpetrated the rape. It reflects a mentality that views women as these delicate creatures who must take steps to avoid the autonomic impulses of men. On the contrary, the societal onus should be on men to not fucking rape, namely because the decision to rape or not is voluntary. Another factor that people point to is what the woman was wearing at the time of the rape. Obviously what the woman was wearing does not make her rape any more or less justifiable: it's unjustified regardless of what she was wearing. But this particular factor obfuscates the debate because it implies that rape is about lusting after a female body. Feminists know that rape is about power and can present evidence that it's not about lust or provocative behaviour: Myth: Rape victims provoke the attach by wearing provocative clothing * Most convicted rapists do not remember what their victims were wearing. * Victims range in age from days old to those in their nineties, hardly provocative dressers. * A Federal Commission on Crime of Violence Study found that only 4.4% of all reported rapes involved provocative behavior on the part of the victim. In murder cases 22% involved such behavior (as simple as a glance). This, and flirtatious behavior preceding the rape, are usually the excuses for remarks like “she had it coming”. But as with dressing provocatively, flirtatious behavior is not explicit consent to sex, nor is it justifiable grounds for blaming the victim of rape. Blaming the victim on a personal level also leads to unnecessary feelings of revictimization and contributes to a stigma that makes it hard for other victims to come forward. II. Addressing Attacks on the Last Diary My previous diary set off a firestorm of straw men and male apprehension at the notion that their gender is largely responsible for the problem. A few commenters pointed to male victims of rape in order to “distribute blame” and put an irrational focus on the false accusations of rape. On the subject of male victims of rape, either by male or female assailants, it is a horrible trauma regardless of who it happens to. But invoking male victims of rape to try and trivialize a systemic problem that overwhelmingly affects women is something I consider to be unconscionable and in effect also trivializes what male victims experienced. And yes, of the reported rape cases, women overwhelmingly make up the cases: 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape). 17.7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape. 9 of every 10 rape victims were female in 2003. Stating that fact though doesn't mean we have to treat male victims of rape in a trivialized fashion, but again, one shouldn't invoke male victims to make it look like it happens to both genders equally in an attempt “distribute blame.” …full article at link added by: animalia_libero

Meet ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Star Rooney Mara

Before landing the dream role of Lisbeth Salander, Mara starred in ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ remake and more. By Eric Ditzian Rooney Mara Photo: Getty Images Get used to hearing the name Rooney Mara. After an extensive search that reportedly focused on A-list names like Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, “Girl With a Dragon Tattoo” director David Fincher selected Mara to play the role of dark and damaged Lisbeth Salander. While hardly a newcomer to Hollywood — she starred in this year’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and her sister is “Iron Man 2” star Kate — Mara remains largely unknown to the public. That’s all about to change. “Dragon Tattoo” is based on the first of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling crime novels, a trilogy that has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Anticipation for Fincher’s adaptation, slated to get an Oscar-friendly December 2011 release, is already running high, with every casting rumor — Kristen Stewart as Salander? Ellen Page? — getting wide media attention. So just who is Mara? MTV News first met her in June 2009 on the set of “Elm Street.” By this point, she had appeared in a few low-profile roles on the big and small screens. But the remake of the beloved horror flick would give the actress her widest exposure to date. And taking on the iconic role of Nancy — originated in 1984 by Heather Langenkamp — left Mara more than a little nervous. “It’s quite stressful,” she confessed. “There are big shoes to fill, and people love Nancy. There’s a lot of pressure to not let people down.” How will Mara deal with the burden of portraying Salander? As with “Elm Street” and Nancy, there is already a cinematic Salander. The Swedish version of “Dragon Tattoo,” starring Noomi Rapace, opened in the U.S. earlier this year to wide acclaim. Perhaps, though, Mara’s success on “Elm Street” has boosted her confidence: The film notched an impressive $33 million opening in April. A few months earlier, Mara had appeared in a supporting role alongside Michael Cera in “Youth in Revolt.” And by the time “Elm Street” hit theaters, she’d already lined up another high-profile flick, a prominent part in Fincher’s “The Social Network,” the story of the founding of Facebook, which arrives in October. Before then, Mara will already be in Sweden, where “Dragon Tattoo” is expected to begin shooting in September. Last year on the “Elm Street” set, Mara revealed to us how she prepares for each day in front on the camera by creating specific playlists of songs that fit the day’s shoot. “It’s sort of like reading my diary. It’s very personal,” she said, at first resisting the urge to open up about her musical tastes. But she eventually told us she listens to Red and Three Days Grace when she needs to get pumped up and, when she has a somber scene, Radiohead and every cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” she can find. “I have a playlist for Nancy for just every day, and I have a specific playlist for the stuff I have to do today, which is really hard-core and I really have to kick ass today,” she explained. Rihanna’s Nipple Ring of the Day

I don’t know when these pictures of Rihanna were taken, I am not really into this whole keeping track of celebrities so much that I know when a picture was fucking taken…most of the time I don’t even know who the picture is of…because my entire life, I had no fucking interest in celebrities and that hasn’t changed…my interest has alway deeply lied in sex…and for as long as I can remember, I would ask girl about how they like masturbating, getting fucked, sucking dick, and all these other things that would get mixed response cuz I was 12. I do know that they are of her in some see through dress and the light is bouncing off her pierced nipple, cuz like all girls with pierced nipples, she wants the world to know she has a pierced nipple, like it’s some kind of accomplishment that keeps her “hard” or “interesting” or whatever the fuck bitches pierce their nipple for….like lesbianism or being a frat boy on spring break in Cancun…. I’ve never fucked a girl with a nipple ring, I think that shit got popular well into my life fucking normal girls…..and it’s not so popular with the crackheads I sometimes visit…cuz they don’t like leaving any money on the table…they like to invest it all into drugs…and nipple rings are too valuable to not pawn off… But I do know a group of 17 year olds sitting next to me at a coffee shop the other day know all about the shit cuz 3 of them got it done earlier that week and they kept talking about it and running to the bathroom to show each other…leaving me very angry they thought I was homeless instead of someone interesting to fuck for their diary…..So I guess nipple rings are making a comeback….and here is Rihanna’s if you even care….

Ali Fedotowsky: Diary of a Secret Alcohol, Drug and Sex Fiend!

We have no idea why anyone would want to sabotage the image of Ali Fedotowsky. She seems like a really nice girl, and we have no reason to believe otherwise. Who do people think she is, Vienna Girardi !? Still, Star claims that before she accepted a ring from Roberto Martinez on Monday’s finale, The Bachelorette star’s life was a whirlwind of alcohol, drugs and sex. As documented in the cutie’s own diary! The celebrity gossip tabloid claims the Williamstown, Mass., native’s secret cache of letters details booze benders, marijuana, ecstasy hazes and kinky sex moves. Plus, they have photos of her partying! This is supposedly Ali Fedotowsky. We’re skeptical – and who cares anyway? Ooh, she was doing shots. Major scandal there! Star interns must be working OT! Don’t get us wrong, we can see her letting loose. But does it relate to The Bachelorette ‘s future in any way? And is it really that bad even if it’s true (a big if)? In one of the diary entries alleged by the publication, Ali details a shocking drug overdose scare she had after taking the illegal drug MDMA, a.k.a ecstasy. “It was really fun at first,” Ali supposedly writes of her pill-popping. “I went downstairs to sleep at 4:30 and sat there until 6:30. I was completely freaking out. I really thought I was supposed to die. I really thought I would… I was so scared.” No idea how this staggering news will impact her spring wedding .

Daily Kos Mourns ‘Such a Good-Natured Woman,’ That Helen Thomas

Even as she sneered that the Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine,” Helen Thomas could easily find fervent defenders in the hard-left environs of the Daily Kos. Some of them couldn’t believe such a sweet and good-natured woman would be demonized. The blogger “General Choomin” literally claimed that on Tuesday night:  This diary is mostly about the smear campaign aimed at Helen Thomas and how right wing propaganda easily mixes with Israeli propaganda. It is a story that people would label me as crazy if I didn’t have the facts to back it up. How could such a good natured woman have so many people denounce her without even knowing the effort that went into it? How could so many people turn their backs on her even though she served her country in a way that most civilians never could ? Perhaps these people should try being on the other end of one of her rants before they try to paint her as Sweet Polly Purebred. “Chipoliwog” agreed on Tuesday that Helen the “patient heroine” had been wronged and her legacy of greatness was unappreciated:  Yesterday, the world lost the voice of one of it’s greatest journalists. Lost to the exigencies of political correctness. Hoisted on her own petard. Gone is the legacy of over 60 years of aggressive truth seeking journalism. Fearlessness in the face of power. A voice that had garnered the respect and fear of 12 or more Presidents of the United States. So undaunted by power that she would even ask a hard question immediately after being praised by such Presidents. Gone is the patient heroine that endured the blatant humiliation of the just previous President who banished her to the back of the room and not once called on her during his term. [ Not true . Just wrong.] Ms. Thomas’s mistake has been seized upon but her apology has not. Her legacy of speaking truth to power, of shining the light on corruption, and the propensity of Man’s inhumanity to Man is snuffed out. This blogger should have really headlined this blog “This Will Induce Vomiting.” The Kosmonauts were upset that Barack Obama wasn’t risking his own image by joining them publicly in hailing her as a brave and truthful freedom fighter:   What I had hoped for in the election of Barack Hussein Obama was that integrity and authenticity would rule the day. What I wanted to hear from the President was that Helen screwed up and perhaps seriously. But to remind the American people that this person should be remembered for her long enduring accomplishments in defense of freedom. Instead, what we got was him either playing the same game or being played by that game. So White House press corps, in the era of false equivalency passing for journalism, who among you can ever presume to rise to Ms. Thomas’s mantle? Who will speak truth to this and future Presidents? Who will be the gadfly when others are sycophants? On Monday, “Sluggahjells” was the first Kosmonaut to the barricades, smelling an AIPAC conspiracy to gin up a mob against this wonderful journalist: Whether you believe her statements or not, Thomas knows that saying things like that in public would come with the risk of dealing with a mob like [CNN’s Ed] Henry and all using the chances they can get to rid of her once and for all. Especially when AIPAC always hovering around. There just seemed like there was no way she was going to survive this one. Still though, thank you DC Stenography society of stupidity for going after an 89 year respected wonderful journalist instead of doing your job and calling out your other colleagues who said controversial cringe like things about Muslims over the years.
