Race Matters: New Study Shows 47% Of Black Men In Chicago Are Neither In School Nor Working

Study Shows 47% Of Black Men In Chicago Are Neither In School Nor Working A new study shows that almost half of all young African American men in Chicago are neither in school or unemployed according to Chicago Tribune reports: Forty-seven percent of 20- to 24-year-old black men in Chicago, and 44 percent in Illinois, were out of school and out of work in 2014, compared with 20 percent of Hispanic men and 10 percent of white men in the same age group, according to the report from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Great Cities Institute. The numbers for black men are far worse in Chicago and Illinois than elsewhere in the country. In Los Angeles and New York City, 31 percent of black 20- to 24-year-old men were out of school and out of work, in line with the national average of 32 percent. While declines in youth employment across all races have raised concerns for a number of years, the new report puts into stark focus the connection between unemployment and Chicago’s racially segregated neighborhoods that also are home to high rates of poverty and crime. The report shows the highest concentration of youth unemployment is in neighborhoods on the city’s South and West sides, especially Fuller Park, Englewood, East Garfield Park and North Lawndale, each of which is more than 90 percent black. The lowest concentration is in mostly white neighborhoods on the North and Northwest sides. What do you think of the depressing stat? Read the rest of the article HERE .

#BlackGirlMagic: 11-Year-Old ‘Sick Of Reading About White Boys & Dogs’ Starts Her Own Black Girl Book Club

Young Black Girl Starts Her Own Book Club Because Representation Matters One young girl is proving that you have to be the change in the world that you want to see. 11-year-old Marley Dias started a campaign to collect and donate 1000 books where black girls are the main characters . According to Philly Voice reports: “I’m hoping to show that other girls can do this as well,” Dias told PhillyVoice. “I used the resources I was given, and I want people to pass that down and use the things they’re given to create more social action projects — and do it just for fun, and not make it feel like a chore.” Dias’ latest social action project is the “#1000BlackGirlBooks” book drive. Frustrated with many of the books she’s assigned in school, she confessed to her mother during dinner one night that she was unhappy with how monochromatic so many stories felt. I told her I was sick of reading about white boys and dogs,” Dias said, pointing specifically to “Where the Red Fern Grows” and the “Shiloh” series. “‘What are you going to do about it?’ [my mom] asked. And I told her I was going to start a book drive, and a specific book drive, where black girls are the main characters in the book and not background characters or minor characters.” The young girl has collected about 400 books, halfway to her goal of 1,000 by Feb. 1. You can visit HERE to help with the book drive and #1000BlackGirlBooks.

Stop The Street Harassment: Pittsburgh Woman Fatally Shot After Turning Down Man At A Bar

SMFH… Pennsylvania Woman Killed After Turning Down Man At Bar The family of a Pittsburgh woman is reeling after authorities say she was gunned down while trying to leave a local bar. 29-year-old Janese Talton-Jackson was killed after a man asked for her number and she turned down his advances. WVTae reports: A mother of two was killed in a shooting early Friday morning in Homewood, and a suspect who was shot during a chase was taken to the hospital and has since been released into custody, Pittsburgh police said. Charles McKinney, 41, of Penn Hills is charged with the homicide of Janese Talton-Jackson, 29, of Penn Hills. Police went to the areas of N. Lang Avenue and Upland Street after a ShotSpotter report around 1:50 a.m. had detected gunfire in the area. While there, police encountered McKinney in a silver car and made a traffic stop. Police were talking with McKinney when they received a dispatch that a woman had been shot in the area. According to police, MicKinney sped off when he heard this. Police chased him through Homewood and fired at him just passed the intersection of Frankstown Avenue and Oakwood Street. He was then taken into custody. Investigators said McKinney attempted to talk to Talton-Jackson inside a bar but she declined. McKinney then followed her outside and shot her. Janese’s murder is adding to the calls for men to stop the dangerous practice of street harassment. Women have a right to say “no” and not be faced with violence or retribution. So sad… New Orleans Toddler Killed By Grandmother’s Gun The grandson of a 45-year-old security guard is dead after his grandmother’s gun accidentally went off. NOLA.com reports: A 42-year-old grandmother has been arrested in the shooting death of her 3-year-old grandson, killed early Wednesday (Jan. 20) inside her eastern New Orleans home. Are You Feeling These Get Ups??? Christina Milian Poses For ‘Rolling Out’ & Says THIS About Lil Wayne

Christina Milian Covers Rolling Out Magazine Christina Milian is covering the latest issue of Rolling Out and inside dishing on her breakup with Lil Wayne. Tina Turn Up first dished on her baaaawdy and divulged secrets to staying in shape. I just try not to overthink it. What I tend to do when I’m ready to get back in shape and tighten up is to cut the carbs. French fries and rice are two of my weaknesses, so when those things start kicking in, your stomach makes space for more food. When I cut those things out, my appetite goes down, I listen to my stomach: if it says I’m full, I’m full. When you can fit in a workout, do it … even if it’s outdoors. I like to go hiking in the hills, just any kind of movement. I like to do a good 20-30 minutes of cardio and sit-ups (do them until you’re tired). I used to do like 100 a day.   …and she also added in this tidbit about listening to songs she recorded with Lil Wayne after their breakup. Well, I love the songs. They all describe moments, [and] every time I listen to them, I think of something that happened in that moment, and what inspired those songs. The four songs that I wrote and are on the EP were at the time about my relationship with Wayne. I was far more descriptive in my writing this time around. It was a really fun and inspirational time. Everything inspires me, but when it comes to chemistry and when it comes to the ups and downs of relationships, that’s what’s real for people. People want to feel something. Sounds like she’s moved on. Are you feeling these get ups??? Hit the flip for more.
