‘Glee’ Cheat Sheet: Catch Up On The Season Before The Finale

Get to know your Quinn-and-Finn from your Burt-and-Kurt, your New Directions from your Vocal Adrenaline and more. By Jean Bentley Puck and Mr. Schuester rock out together on the season finale of “Glee” Photo: Fox If haven’t yet gotten hooked on Fox’s hit show “Glee,” Tuesday night’s (June 8) season finale is as good a time as any to give it a shot, but you’re going to need a bit of a primer. As they say at the beginning of each episode, here’s what you missed all season on “Glee” : William McKinley High Spanish teacher Will Schuester recruited a big bunch of misfits and a couple of popular jocks and cheerleaders for the glee club, New Directions. Principal Figgins said they need to win Sectionals to become a permanent club, but Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester vowed to do everything she could to sabotage them. Theater nerd Rachel thought she and quarterback Finn were meant to be together, but he was dating Cheerio Quinn, who was the most popular girl in school and the president of the celibacy club until she got pregnant. Oops. She tricked Finn into believing he was the father when the baby daddy was really Finn’s BFF, football-playing bad boy Puck. Will’s wife Terri said she was pregnant, but she actually wasn’t and didn’t want to tell him the truth. She decided to adopt Quinn’s baby in secret and pretend she was still preggers. Of course, both lies blew up in their faces big time — Will and Finn found out the truth, and broke up with Terri and Quinn immediately. Then New Directions won sectionals and the show went on an agonizingly long hiatus. Puck dated Rachel, Mercedes, and Santana, but stuck by Quinn the whole time. Mercedes and Kurt, who recently came out to his surprisingly accepting widowed father, wanted more attention and joined the Cheerios. Coach Sylvester told Mercedes to lose weight, and Mercedes politely told her where she could shove it. But Kurt stayed on the team, and they consequently won their sixth consecutive national competition. Rachel and Finn started dating, but then she met Jesse St. James, the lead singer of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, their competition at Regionals (which incidentally, New Directions now has to win to remain at the school because Sue is blackmailing Principal Figgins with photos from when she kind of date-raped him). Jesse left his school and joined New Directions at the urging of Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Corcoran. Shelby wanted Jesse to convince Rachel to search for her birth mother, who happens to be — you guessed it, Shelby. Artie told Tina that his being in a wheelchair was kinda like her speech impediment, then they started dating. She confessed her speech impediment was fake, and Artie got mad for a while, but they got back together. Artie asked her to wear skimpier clothing, then apologized for being misogynistic. Principal Figgins asked her to wear different clothes because he was afraid she was a vampire, but she scared him out of it. Artie came to terms with the fact that he won’t walk again. Finn’s mom started dating Kurt’s dad, which was totally part of Kurt’s plan to get closer to Finn, whom he’s always sort of had a crush on. Then Kurt got mad that Burt and Finn started hanging out, so he tried to act manlier and wear lots of flannel to win his dad’s affection. But Burt reassured Kurt that he’d always love him no matter what. Awww. Once he was free from his terrible wife, Will started dating sweet guidance counselor Emma, who was previously engaged to Coach Tanaka. But Will and Emma decided they should first take a break to deal with their own issues. Will seduced Sue just to give her a taste of her own cruel medicine, then he felt bad about it and apologized. Sue’s very loving with her older sister, who has Down’s syndrome. She also has a big thing about Madonna . Maybe Sue’s not so tough after all. And that’s what happened on “Glee.” Will New Directions actually win Regionals? Will the Sue Sylvester who shows up to judge the contest be the impervious, badass Sue or the vulnerable, softer Sue? Are Will and Emma finally going to get together for real? And will Rachel learn that her relationship with Jesse was a setup? We’ll find out soon enough! ‘Glee’ Recap: Madonna Invades William McKinley High

Sue Sylvester takes center stage during the all-Madonna episode. By Jean Bentley Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz and Chris Colfer in “Glee” Photo: FOX Tuesday’s (April 20) all-Madonna episode of “Glee” imparted an important lesson: Even the almighty Material Girl can be upstaged by the power of Sue Sylvester. From her shot-for-shot remake of Madonna’s “Vogue” music video to her extra-acerbic insults of Will Schuester’s hair, the Cheerios coach was just on. At most high schools, Madonna songs blaring at high volume over the loudspeaker would prove to be a bit distracting. Then again, most schools aren’t William McKinley High, where Sue blackmailed Principal Figgins into playing her idol’s music full blast to inspire the students to be more independent and powerful. (This also, conveniently, allowed as many Madonna songs as possible to be squeezed into the 44-minute episode.) Sue had her Cheerios harness Madge’s power by encouraging them to troll the middle school for younger boyfriends and abandon their last names. She also choreographed a routine to “Ray of Light” involving stilts (not creepy — in fact, amazing) and hurled her greatest one-liner yet: “Sloppy freak-show babies. Somewhere in the English countryside in a stately manor home, Madonna is weeping.” Following Sue’s lead, Will made New Directions brainstorm Madonna numbers in an attempt to empower the female glee clubbers and discourage the guys’ misogynistic tendencies. This brilliant idea struck him when he overheard Rachel asking the female gleeks for hypothetical romantic advice after her new boyfriend tried to get her to do it after a Wiggles concert. (Remember, Rachel and Vocal Adrenaline’s Jesse St. James are secretly dating.) Unfortunately, guidance counselor Emma was no help. As we learned last week, she’s a virgin, too, but she did have some pretty hilarious sex-education brochures. After Rachel’s girl-power-y “Express Yourself,” her duet with Finn on the “Borderline/ Open Your Heart” mash-up, and a clandestine meeting with Jesse in the Steven Sondheim biography section of the library, where he apologized for pressuring her, she decided she would have sex with Jesse after all. But Rachel wasn’t the only character contemplating losing her virginity: Emma took to heart Sue’s quip that she wasn’t powerful enough to have Madonna piped into her office and told Will it was on. Foreplay would start at 7:30 sharp. And Santana decided Finn was the younger, inferior man she needed in order to emulate Madonna. The resulting (and inevitable) “Like a Virgin” extravaganza followed the three couples on their sexual adventures and was perhaps the best “Glee” number yet, as far as integrating the song and choreography into the plot and allowing multiple characters to sing solos. All six shared vocal duties — even Santana! And she sounded great. Still, it turns out that not all the couples went through with the deed. Although she told Finn the next day that she did it, Rachel didn’t actually leave the bathroom, even as Jesse implored her to “Just come out so we can talk. Or sing about it.” Jesse’s solution: transferring to McKinley to prove how much he respected Rachel. Finn, on the other hand, lied and said he didn’t do it when he actually did. Emma chickened out and ran home barefoot. She and Will decided Monday that they’d readdress their sexual chemistry after his divorce was official and she got help for her OCD. Kurt and Mercedes made the Sue Sylvester “Vogue” video as a multimedia presentation for their New Directions Madonna song (it’s almost indescribably amazing), and they were rewarded for their hard work in the form of positions as the Cheerios’ new lead singers, roles they debuted with a cover of the Madonna/ Justin Timberlake duet “4 Minutes.” Closing out the episode was a take on “What It Feels Like for a Girl” from the boys and a show-stopping “Like a Prayer,” complete with gospel choir, from the whole gang. Did the all-Madonna episode live up to its hype? Sound off in the comments!

‘Glee’ Premiere Recap: The Gleeks Say ‘Hell-O’

The hit show returns with a few surprises. Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele in Tuesday’s “Glee” Photo: Carin Baer/ Fox Ladies and gentlemen, “Glee” is back . And with it, the seemingly impossible task of living up to the already sky-high levels of hype leveled upon it during the show’s ultra-long hiatus. Well, you can rest easy knowing that in “Hell-O,” creator Ryan Murphy and his writers crafted a well-paced, clever episode of their Golden Globe-winning comedy that culminated in a musical number set to the Beatles’ “Hello Goodbye.” What’s changed at McKinley High since New Directions won regionals in December? Well, although Kurt, Mercedes and Rachel had hoped everything would be different, three slurpees to the face on their first day back proved otherwise. Sue Sylvester regained control of the Cheerios, thanks to a well-timed roofie that allowed her to take some very compromising photos of her in bed with Principal Figgins. (The track suit stayed on.) There were a few modifications to the school’s social hierarchy: The end of football season meant Finn’s now a basketball star. Puck started dating Quinn even though she was getting fat (“I’m pregnant,” she helpfully tried to explain). And thanks to Rachel’s take-charge attitude (and a cat-themed relationship calendar), the Finn/Rachel romance was now official. To her, at least. Sue enlisted Cheerio spies Brittany and Santana to help wreak havoc on New Directions by getting Finn to dump his new girlfriend. Since he was in the middle of a post-being-cheated-on life crisis (which he worked through by singing the Doors’ “Hello, I Love You”), he was eager to drop his domineering new girlfriend (who expressed her rage via the All-American Rejects’ “Give You Hell”) when Brittany and Santana asked him on a date. With both of them. It didn’t really go as Finn imagined, however, when the ladies spent the date gossiping about him as he sat on the other side of the restaurant booth. He realized his mistake and tried to get Rachel back, but it was too late — she’d already met someone else. Vocal Adrenaline star Jesse St. James, played by Lea Michele’s “Spring Awakening” co-star Jonathan Groff, picked Rachel up as she perused Lionel Richie sheet music at a local store. The hilariously cocky senior (“This is one of my favorite haunts. I like to come and flip through the celebrity biographies, pick up some lifestyle tips”) wooed Rachel with a duet on “Hello,” then asked her out. The rest of New Directions forced Rachel to break up with Jesse (thanks to another Sue Sylvester scheme) — but she couldn’t do it, and decided to date him in secret (Sue strikes again: “I am engorged with venom, and triumph”). When they sealed their new relationship with a kiss under the heat of Vocal Adrenaline’s 10-times-more-powerful-than-normal spotlight (sunscreen is required for use), VA’s director looked on with a knowing smile. While it’s unclear whether Shelby Corcoran, played by Broadway star Idina Menzel, truly was in on a nefarious plan to infiltrate New Directions, she embarked on her own McKinley affair when Mr. Schuester came to speak to her (as Vocal Adrenaline sang AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell”), only to wind up making out on his couch. Though she told him to call her back when he figured out what he wanted in a relationship, it was great to meet Will Schuester the player — finally, another side of the perpetual nice guy. The other women in Mr. Schu’s tangled romantic web, Terri and Emma, had a showdown when Terri stopped by to pick up her Bruckheimer DVDs as Emma prepared a surprise romantic dinner. While Emma thought “Hello” from “The Jazz Singer” was her and Will’s song, Terri informed the guidance counselor that it was her and Will’s junior prom theme, which Emma verified in that year’s Thunderclap yearbook. This revelation, combined with Emma’s admission that she’d never been intimate with anyone, ever, led her to give Will the same “Call me when you figure yourself out” message as Shelby. Google Thinks All New Yorkers Who Fly Into JFK Are Arab

Tonight someone emailed us to point out a truly bizarre glitch in Google Maps — apparently they think that anyone in New York who searches for directions from JFK airport is Arab. Here’s what our tipster pointed out: Go to Google Maps and click “get directions.” Type “JFK airport” into the A search field and any NY location like “Williamsburg, NY” as the B destination. Click “Get Directions” and “JFK airport” is suddenly Arabic!!! So I tried it multiple times searching for directions from JFK to White Plains, Long Island, Park Slope, Buffalo, Queens and Harlem, and each time the name of the airport showed up in what appears to be Arabic
