‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Is ‘Epic,’ Michael Bay Says

‘It takes awhile to get it right,’ director tells MTV News of ‘Dark of the Moon.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Kara Warner Optimus Prime in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” Photo: DreamWorks Michael Bay has been admirably open about what he — and many fans of his “Transformers” franchise — view as the second film’s failings resulting from a rushed, post-writers’-strike production schedule. And he’s promised to right those cinematic wrongs with the third installment in the series, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” Early looks at footage from the upcoming action flick — a tantalizing teaser trailer and a balletic Super Bowl spot — seem to indicate he’s accomplished that goal. “I think it takes awhile to get it right,” he explained to MTV News on Wednesday night at the red-carpet premiere of “I Am Number Four,” which he produced. “I think we did not want the third one to suck.” The problem with 2009’s “Revenge of the Fallen,” Bay once again pointed out, is that the writers’ strike left the production hardly any time to nail down a script. The filmmakers found themselves essentially trying to create a story line in the edit room, rather than on the page before shooting began. “The second one, we had a tough go,” Bay told us. “It was a very, very tough thing to make a movie under those circumstances. It affected a lot of Hollywood at that time.” This time around, Bay said, “We worked extra hard” and struck upon “a better story.” “It’s epic and it happens in a city,” he added. “It’s more accessible because you recognize stuff — it’s not in a desert. It’s kind of like ‘Black Hawk Down’ with our small group of heroes in a city.” On the carpet, Bay also briefly touched on two new alien bots set to debut in “Dark of the Moon.” “Sentinel Prime is great. He’s great,” he said. “I can’t tell you anything else, other than he’s great.” And about the villain Shockwave, Bay say, “He’s bad,” adding that compared to Megatron, “He’s got a much bigger gun [and is] a little bit more vicious.” Though Bay is certain he’s got a winner on his hands, the director maintained that “Dark of the Moon” will be his final “Transformers” film. “It does have an end, yes,” he said. “Because I am finished doing this.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Britney Spears Drops ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video Preview

’14 days, 14 teasers, 1 World Premiere of #HIAM,’ Brit promises in a tweet implying clip will debut in two weeks. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in the “Hold it Against Me” teaser Photo: Jive For fans counting down the days until Britney Spears debuts her “Hold It Against Me” video , the pop star premiered an otherworldly clip on Friday (February 4) that gives them a taste of what to expect. In the teaser , Brit also reveals that the video is set to drop on or about February 18 with a panel that reads “13 days to go.” “Hold It Against Me” is the lead single from her March release, Femme Fatale. On Friday, Spears about the video, “14 days, 14 teasers, 1 World Premiere of #HIAM –Britney.” She then included a link to the (very short) five-second mini tease of the Jonas Akerlund-directed video. Judging from those few seconds, though, the director seems to be bringing Britney into his dark world. Dressed in a flowing white gown, the singer appears surrounded by TV screens as a light and camera are pointed at her face. The preview ends with the message “Britney Spears … 13 days to go.” Brian Friedman, who choreographed the video, recently told MTV News that this one pushes all boundaries. “Artistically, this video I think surpasses a lot of her other videos,” he teased. “So many of her videos are iconic, though. You look at ‘Toxic’ and you look at ‘Slave,’ even ‘Oops … I Did It Again’: People are gonna remember those videos forever. [In] ‘… Baby One More Time,’ she made school-girl outfits relevant and so popular. This video is artistically a masterpiece, and I don’t think that Britney has pushed the envelope in this way ever in any of her videos.” Friedman credited Akerlund’s keen eye for unexpected visuals and epic scale. “Anything that he does is magical,” he said. “His eye for art is insane, so I was excited to work with someone who loves art so much and it’s not just a job, it’s not technical; it really is a string aesthetic to what he does.” The teaser video dropped a day after Spears and her camp thanked fans for helping to keep the album title a trending topic on Twitter. “Just heard FEMME FATALE has been trending for almost 2 days. I LIVE for and LOVE you all!” she wrote . “Thank U! Thank U! Thank U!” What do you think of the “HIAM” teaser? Tell us in the comments! ‘Superman’ Star Henry Cavill Had Long Road To Landing The Role

Actor has been linked to Superman reboots since 2002. By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images It took Henry Cavill far longer than expected to complete his journey from Krypton to Earth. Years after the British actor first circled the role of Superman, he finally landed the part of the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the storied comic franchise. It was, indeed, a circuitous path for Cavill, involving brushes with other heroes and the planet’s most swoon-worthy vampire. He’s been this close to becoming a breakout Hollywood star a staggering number of times, but until now he was unable to seal the deal. Now his life is about to change in a big way. As we applaud Cavill for winning the part, let’s take a look back at the ups and downs he endured before signing on to play the world’s most iconic man in tights. 2002 : Though he was mostly known as a stage actor, Cavill’s name cropped up in “Superman” conversations following director Brett Ratner’s stated desire to cast an unknown in the title role of his in-the-works reboot. Ratner also had a strong interest in future “White Collar” star Matthew Bomer , but the studio pushed him in the direction of established talent like Jude Law and Josh Hartnett. It didn’t matter, though: Ratner left the project early the next year. 2003 : McG came aboard to replace Ratner and began to search, like Ratner, for an unknown actor to play Superman. Cavill actually ended up landing the role. “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” he explained to MTV News in 2009. But McG’s version of the film never came to pass and Cavill once again missed out on the opportunity to play the Man of Steel. That same year, following rumors that Cavill was being considered for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s reboot, Christian Bale won the role of the Caped Crusader. 2004 : After McG’s departure from “Superman,” Bryan Singer hopped into the director’s chair and targeted an unknown actor. But the actor wasn’t Cavill. Instead, Brandon Routh won the lead role. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained in ’09. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” 2005 : Cavill wouldn’t have been faulted for avoiding any contact with iconic film characters, but he kept pushing. In ’05, he screen-tested for the role of James Bond in “Casino Royale.” But the part went instead to Daniel Craig, and Cavill, perhaps, was left with his confidence shaken, not stirred. 2007 : By this point, Cavill had mostly appeared in low-profile films like the direct-to-video “Hellraiser: Hellworld” and in supporting roles in higher-profile fare like “Tristan & Isolde.” But the guy got a break when he was cast in the Showtime series “The Tudors,” opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The series enjoyed a successful run, lasting four seasons and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for best drama. Cavill had also reportedly been “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s top pick to play Edward Cullen, but at the end of ’07, the role went to Robert Pattinson. A few years later, we asked Cavill how close he had actually come to playing the vampire. “I’ve heard this, but I haven’t heard from Stephenie,” Cavill told us . “I haven’t spoken to her personally, and I haven’t spoken to the producers.” 2009 : Rumor has it that Cavill was competing for the role of Hal Jordan in the long-gestating big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern.” And — surprise, surprise — after losing out on Batman and Superman, Cavill failed to land the role. Instead, Ryan Reynolds signed on to play Jordan . 2011 : At long, long last, the guy who missed out on playing some of pop culture’s best known characters officially signs on to play Superman . “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Jesse Eisenberg Was ‘Great’ On ‘SNL,’ ‘Social Network’ Co-Star Says

Armie Hammer tells MTV News at the SAG Awards it was ‘funny’ to see Eisenberg onstage with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Kara Warner Armie Hammer Photo: Lester Cohen/ Getty Images Oscar front-runner “The Social Network” didn’t exactly paint the most flattering picture of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, but the young billionaire proved he can take a joke when he turned up alongside Jesse Eisenberg on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Facebook’s CEO wasn’t the only one who watched Eisenberg host “SNL.” “I saw the whole episode! I thought it was great!” exclaimed “Social Network” co-star Armie Hammer when MTV News caught up with him at the 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 30). Thanks to director Darren Aronofsky and some subtle special effects, Hammer portrayed both Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the athletic Harvard twins who hired Zuckerberg to create a social-networking site and later sued him for millions. “It was so funny to see [Jesse] and Mark [together].” Hammer was at the Director’s Guild Awards on Saturday when he received a picture to his phone of the pair standing onstage together in Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the famous location where “SNL” has taped since 1975. Hammer said he did a double-take. “I was like, ‘What the hell?’ ” he recalled with a broad smile. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! It’s the two of them!’ ” Zuckerberg has expressed reservations about some aspects of the movie, which won the award for Best Drama at the Golden Globes earlier this month. The movie also nabbed awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Composer (Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor with Atticus Ross) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) at the 16th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards . Fincher, Sorkin and the cast have acknowledged that the movie is a somewhat fictionalized account of the rise of the omnipresent website: a true-life tale that severed friendships and has been the subject of many lawsuits between former co-workers who claim they were unfairly stiffed of their piece of the pie. The Academy Awards has 10 Best Picture nominees : “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “Inception,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The King’s Speech,” “127 Hours,” “Toy Story 3,” “True Grit,” “Winter’s Bone” and “The Social Network.” Most pundits predict a hotly contested race between “the Facebook movie” and “The King’s Speech,” which took the best film ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards as well as the best actor prize for its lead, Colin Firth.
