If The King’s Speech Gets Re-Edited To A PG-13, It Doesn’t Deserve The Oscar

The King’s Speech is riding high on guild love after its surprise win for Best Picture at the PGA Awards and Best Director for Tom Hooper at the DGA Awards; it may yet complete the trifecta tonight at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. At this point, it has to be considered the new odds-on favorite for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. But if Harvey Weinstein follows through on his plan to re-cut the film for a more profitable rating, then, frankly, it doesn’t deserve a damned thing.

Directors Guild Award Shocker: Tom Hooper Wins For The King’s Speech

And just like that, we’ve got a new front-runner. After previously notching an unexpected win at the Producers Guild Award, The King’s Speech continued on its guild rampage, with first-time nominee Tom Hooper winning Best Feature Film Director last night, leaving previous favorite David Fincher with nothing. And as you will hear ad nauseum today, only six times in the past has the DGA Award winner not won the Academy Award for Best Director, most recently in 2002 when Rob Marshall won for Chicago , but Roman Polanski went on to win the Oscar for The Pianist . Will The King’s Speech make it a guild hat trick and win big tonight at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Full list of winners after the break. [ Deadline ]

Ryan Seacrest, Josh Duhamel In Talks For ‘New Year’s Eve’ Movie

Ice Cube has also been named as possible addition to all-star cast for Garry Marshall flick. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Seacrest Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Who would have thought that Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Til Schweiger, Sienna Miller, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara wouldn’t be enough Hollywood star power for one movie? Well, it seems that the brains behind the forthcoming movie “New Year’s Eve” are looking to add even more high-profile talent to the lineup. “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, Ice Cube and Josh Duhamel all are in talks to appear in the star-studded flick, which follows New Yorkers over the course of, you guessed it, New Year’s Eve, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Seacrest would play himself in the movie, Duhamel would play a man looking to get to New York to reconnect with a mystery woman he met the year before, and Cube would play an NYPD cop who works with Swank, who will play the director of the Times Square New Year’s Eve party. The flick is set to begin filming next month. Earlier this week, “SNL” funnyman Seth Meyers and rocker Jon Bon Jovi signed on for roles in the Garry Marshall film, the sequel to 2010’s “Valentine’s Day.” And at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, Efron confirmed his role in the movie to MTV News. “I’m starting a movie in a couple of weeks called ‘New Year’s Eve,’ with Garry Marshall. It’s got a great cast,” he shared. “My scenes are with Michelle Pfeiffer. Yeah, not a bad co-star.” Last year, Marshall spoke to MTV News about the film, which was then in its early stages, and had one other megastar in mind for the film. “Already they’re mentioning Justin Bieber ,” he said. “Perhaps I’d better see who he is, so when he arrives on set, possibly [we can talk]. So we’ll see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “New Year’s Eve.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘Social Network’ Director David Fincher ‘Humbled’ By Oscar Nods

‘We knew the movie was about basic human emotions and the need for acceptance,’ producer Michael De Luca tells MTV News. By Aly Semigran Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Columbia Pictures Having gone from “that Facebook movie” to Oscar-nominated masterpiece, “The Social Network” has run the quite the gamut since its release last October. Continuing an awards-season streak, the film picked up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning — the third most-nominated of the Oscar contenders, behind “The King’s Speech” with 12, “True Grit” with 10, and (in a tie) “Inception” with eight — including Best Picture, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Fincher, earning his second career nomination, released a statement that read, “I’m very grateful and humbled by the nominations for ‘The Social Network.’ I’m incredibly proud of the work of my wildly talented collaborators in front of and behind the camera — all of whom gave the best of themselves and their talents in service to a film about a groundbreaking American innovation. This directing nomination represents the sum of the work of all of us, and I want to acknowledge the vast contributions to this film of all of my good friends and creative partners. The success of our movie belongs to many people, and this nomination is theirs to share.” Sorkin, who penned the dialogue-heavy movie , spoke to “Good Morning America” about the good news, calling the Oscar nods “a triumph,” and adding, “I think it was the people I got to sit in the room with. I love the way audiences responded to this movie. They came out and saw it and they loved it. It’s a special cherry on top.” Meanwhile, MTV News caught up with Michael De Luca, one of the film’s producers, shortly after the nominations were announced. Unlike many likely nominees, De Luca didn’t play coy about his expectations. “I set my little iPhone alarm to wake me up at 5:15 a.m.,” he told us about Tuesday morning’s announcements. “For me, personally, I’ve always done this as a fan of movies, as a bystander over the years in my career as a producer. But this is the first time I’ve had a horse in the race, so I was very excited to wake up and it was a real blast.” De Luca, who echoed Fincher and Sorkin’s sentiments about the entire cast and crew being “incredibly happy and grateful,” went on to say, “We knew what the movie was about. We knew the movie was about basic human emotions and the need for acceptance, the longing for love and friendship and how trying to find those things at 19 is hard enough, but when you’re a genius and you’re revolutionizing communication and you’re creating things that will go on to maintain billion-dollar evaluations, how do you maintain your relationships? How do you change relationships?” The Oscar-nominee also talked about how the modern-day tale featured classic themes. “Whether you’re Copernicus, Galileo or Mark Zuckerberg, no matter what you’re doing in your career or professional life, there are basic human needs. The heart must have to have a happy life,” De Luca said. “We knew that that was what the movie was about and we knew that Aaron Sorkin’s script seized on that and wrote a story of friendship and what you lose when you win, and we knew that nobody was going to know that until they saw the movie. It was like having the best secret in the world.” Still, while there was mostly celebration for “The Social Network” team this morning, one name was notably left off of the list: Andrew Garfield. Widely regarded as a shoo-in for a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as Facebook CFO Eduardo Saverin, Garfield has earned nods at the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards; he was ultimately snubbed by the Academy. “He’s an incredible actor,” De Luca said of Garfield. “And the ensemble we had in the film was incredible and they’re all going off to star in [films] on their own and we’re going to hear from Andrew for years to come. I can’t tell you enough about his performance. He’s a consummate actor. Jake Johnson Raves About ‘No Strings Attached’ Director Ivan Reitman

‘I couldn’t debate him on stuff,’ actor says of legendary director/producer. By Kara Warner Jake Johnson Photo: MTV News For rising comedic star Jake Johnson, who appears alongside Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman in the new romantic comedy “No Strings Attached,” his personal highlight from working on the film (in addition to having the best lines in the trailer and many of the killer one-liners in the film as well) was working with legendary director/producer Ivan Reitman. “For me, working with Ivan Reitman was crazy because of ‘Ghostbusters,’ ” Johnson recently told MTV News of the man responsible for helping bring comedic classics like “Animal House,” “Ghostbusters” and “Meatballs” to the screen. “We did a whole scene where, this was one of the coolest moments of the movie for me, the scene where we’re in a fraternity house, partying and, you know, Ivan produced ‘Animal House,’ ” Johnson added. “And we’re all hanging out, setting up, and he goes to somebody he was standing next to, we were standing in a little circle, and he goes, ‘Man, I’m having flashbacks of “Animal House” in here.’ And he looked around and goes, ‘This is exactly how it felt, but in a different era.’ And I thought, ‘That’s awesome!’ Like, this is actually that man. [He] was there and [John] Belushi and [Bill] Murray and all those guys were such inspirations for our kind of generation. So to see a man who was there, it made it very real.” The actor, who you may recognize from his roles in “Get Him to the Greek” and “Paper Heart,” said Reitman’s legacy and r
