Good on U.K. publication Empire magazine for offering up the — drumroll, please — world’s first Hobbit cover photo. (Never mind that EW had a full spread on The Hobbit in its most recent issue; no cover, no service!) Sir Ian McKellen and his ratty-looking robes get the honor — with Martin Freeman relegated to a “Meet Bilbo!” bubble on the left side of the mag — and, as Empire reveals, there are some slight physical differences between his appearance in The Hobbit , and what fans remember from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring . Fun! Let’s investigate, Photo Hunt-style.
Shia LaBeouf’s new interview with the Los Angeles Times contains only a sly reference to what (I’m assuming) everyone’s been thinking about the 25-year-old actor for awhile now: He’s described as “lean, shaggy-haired and smart alecky sometimes to the point of self-destruction.” Yes, “smart alecky” is on the right track, but it’s really more like, “glibly cocky” and “arrogant.” Point is, it’s hard to reconcile the vision of LaBeouf at age 20, when he was the august Disney Channel alum on the rise, with LaBeouf now: the overtly hotheaded, shabbily hirsute blockbuster star. Still, he gives memorable and inspired quotes, and that makes him an interview worth reading every single time. Here are our five, er, “favorite” * soundbites from LaBeouf’s latest sitdown.
Five new Disney Channel stars say the movie, premiering Friday night, is all about the music. By Jocelyn Vena Bridget Mendler Photo: MTV News It’s Friday, and that means that the highly anticipated new Disney flick “Lemonade Mouth” premieres in a living room near you. The story follows a group of teens who start a band to deal with their high school angst and the stars, who stopped by the MTV News offices earlier this week, said there’s a lot of heart in the story, based on the book by Mark Peter Hughes. That heart, it seems, is reflected in the songs. “I want them to see the music in the movie, because I think that completely changes it,” Bridget Mendler said. “I think that the music alone is really fun.” “Every song has a meaning throughout our story line of Lemonade Mouth,” Adam Hicks added. “We write songs [in the movie] to what we’re going through, and you see us rehearse and you see the band grow.” Naomi Scott wants fans to see that growth over the course of the flick. “I really want people to be able to really know our characters, and I think by the end of the film, they do; they know who Lemonade Mouth are,” she said. But those who aren’t big fans of musicals shouldn’t fret. The cast wants viewers to know: This not a musical. It’s a movie about a band. “It’s not just like a movie where we get up and start singing through the hallways,” Blake Michael said. “It’s real people going through real stuff.” So what should fans be most excited for? “The music, the performances!” the cast said in unison. ‘Dancing With the Stars’ couple say they like to ‘create a story line.’ By Kelley L. Carter Chelsea Kane Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — A couple of weeks in, Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas have found the right magic. MTV News caught up with the “Dancing With the Stars” couple during rehearsals for the Viennese waltz they performed Monday night, and they said they are a perfect dance-floor match. “I feel like we’re one of the couples on the show that have really found this awesome balance between learning and living,” Kane said. “We’re on a ballroom-dancing show; this is supposed to be fun. We get to come to work and literally make up dances, and then go put on rad costumes. There’s nothing to complain about! We come to the studio, we rehearse and then we like to find times to just relax and make sure that we’re taking in this whole experience and having a good time.” That magic played out on Monday’s show. It took a lot of hard work to master the dance, the Disney Channel star said, because it challenged her to rework her timing. “We like to always create a story line with our songs, and this one was really fun. We still got to kind of tell the story and do the freestyle stuff that Mark really excels at. I think he’s one of the best choreographers on the show,” she said. “This whole dance, there’s a lot of in-frame, where it looks like you’re leaning back and it looks like you’re going back into a backbend while you’re spinning around in circles. It looks really pretty. It doesn’t feel pretty, but it looks really pretty.” Ballas concurred, saying the dance is magical, but a tough one to perfect. “It’s also very technical, smooth and elegant and graceful. It’s one of the ballroom dances and it’s a lot of traditional things that you have to nail,” he said. The dance was only made more magical because the couple performed with a 36-piece orchestra onstage with them. “I think the most challenging part for me is the speed, which is surprising,” Kane said. “It seems like it’s a slow song, but you’re actually moving your feet really fast, and it’s supposed to look like you’re floating around on the floor.” Ballas said the reason they work well together is that they both agree that at the end of the day, it’s all about having a good time. “We have a lot of fun. We work really hard, but we also make it enjoyable, which it’s meant to be,” he said. “We don’t take it too seriously. We have our frustrating moments as well, but when we do, we take a break and come back to it.” What did you think of Chelsea and Mark’s performance on Monday’s “Dancing With the Stars”? Singer, who left treatment in January, will speak via Cambio.com. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Demi Lovato has remained on the down low since leaving a treatment facility in late January. Fans have been wondering what is next for the Disney star, and now it seems they will find out. According to Cambio.com , the singer will appear on the site Monday in “a special video message to all her fans.” “This will be the first time since leaving treatment that Demi will speak directly to her fans to thank them for their support,” the statement reads. “Demi is excited to be getting back to work and reuniting with her fans around the world.” The news comes on the heels of an interview in which her “Sonny With a Chance” co-star Brandon Mychal Smith confirmed that the show’s name was set to be changed to “So Random,” the name of the show the characters in “Sonny” work on. “With a show like ours, each season you focus on a different concept, a different theory, or maybe a different character’s background,” Smith said. “Season one, we established who we were — you saw some mini-sketches, you saw who the characters were and how they mingled and intertwined. Season two, you were able to see more of the relationship between Sonny and Chad and how they got into it and how we didn’t like it, and you saw some of Mackenzie Falls and that aspect. “And now, this season,” he continued, “you’ll be able to see ‘So Random,’ see why we are where we are today in regards to being the teen idols that we are. You’ll be able to see how we bring the funny every week.” With questions about what that means for Lovato and her role on the show, Disney told MTV News, “Demi’s management will inform us when she is ready to return to work. Last November, we announced that we would focus on our ‘So Random’ sketch-comedy show to keep the staff, cast and crew employed. We began production in January and will debut those episodes this spring. As you know, Disney Channel previously aired ‘So Random’ specials to strong ratings.” What are you hoping to see from Demi Lovato now that she’s finished treatment? Share your thoughts below. Disney Channel is willing to wait until the star is ready to return to work, MTV News learns. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage Last week, Demi Lovato left a treatment center after seeking help for personal issues. Before she entered treatment, Lovato had a big 2011 ahead of her . She was busy working on new music and was set to return to work on her hit Disney show, “Sonny With a Chance.” Lovato’s post-treatment plan is still up in the air, but MTV News has learned that the Disney Channel will wait to begin working again with the star until her camp feels she is ready. As for “Sonny With a Chance,” for now, it will continue to focus on the show within the show, “So Random.” Disney reps told MTV News that those sketches will eventually become a full series; production on the show began last week. Further information on “Sonny” was not made available at press time. Lovato plans to tour later this year and will focus on making sure ticket prices are affordable for her fans. “I have best friends that aren’t in the industry and are dealing with just buying groceries and things like that,” she said about the solo trek. “So I want to do my part.” Prior to her treatment, Lovato has already began work on new music, with producers like Timbaland wanting to work with the Disney star . Last year, when she spoke to MTV News about her next album, Lovato noted that she wanted to go more R&B . “I would love for Drake to be on the album,” Lovato said. “It’s kind of like a pipe dream. I would also like to do a song with Trey Songz. It would be hot!” The singer added that she wanted to show off her big voice on the upcoming record. “It’s really nice to embrace it,” she said. “I grew up singing R&B and then I grew up listening to rock, so it was kind of weird. But I’m kind of learning how to incorporate the two and I’m having a good time with it.” What are you hoping to see from Demi Lovato now that she’s finished treatment?
